Thanks for the congratulations and well-wishes! It's been a crazy few months, and I am both excited and dreading the reality of home ownership. We don't move in until mid-January (we're letting the erstwhile owner stay for up to four weeks to get her 44-year accumulation of stuff together), and it'll be a few weeks after that before our first movie night.

For the time being:

My mother had two antique cookie tins that she used to store Christmas cookies in since before I was born. I washed one of them in the dishwasher, this morning, just as I have dozens of times; and my mother a hundred times before. When I pulled it out, all the paint was gone - just bare metal. I'm devastated. One of my most treasured childhood memories is gone... ruined!

I know it's just a thing, but it feels like a part of me just died.

It started around 7:00 this morning. Now Portland is covered in a lovely layer of snow. The city is hushed an glowing, people are cheerfullly chilled and out enjoying the ambiance, and all the things that go with the first snowfall.

Unfortunately, a couple of inches on the valley floor translates to significant snow at 700 feet where the zoo is. ZooLights is cancelled for the evening. Ordinarily, this wouldn't affect me on a Sunday, but I had a date.

Out where she is, there's a lot of wind that goes with this kind of weather. So she didn't even want to leave her house, or have me try to go over there. Tomorrow the high is supposed to be 26 degrees. She's just in town for less than a week. I haven't seen her and Tuesday she goes back to Mexico.

Well, we were wanting to keep this casual...

Well, I'm being nailed with a load of holiday hustle and bustle all in one day.

Tomorrow's gonna be busy as hell, but mostly fun.

Gotta get up early to grab the DL tickets for the needy family, then drop all the gifts off at the community center (or GusGus might handle that alone). Then, I'm going shopping with a couple fantastic ladies. Then, I have to prep some food and a graphical chart for a 2-hour long appointment in the late afternoon, followed by racing to LAX to pick up an old friend whom I haven't seen since '95, who, of course, is gonna want to hang out all evening, even though we'll be going to Disneyland the next day together.

CRAZY!!!

But... fun.

But, why does fun have to happen all at once?

There's a silvery sheen of ice everywhere, the forecast high is 25, and then there's that chill wind out of the east. Things are improving - chains are no longer required on metro area highways - but the zoo is still closed. We'll stay closed until we can make the grounds safe for the public. And we can only do that after we clear keeper areas.

So it's a weird day. We're all there, but the public isn't.

My hangover advice: Be me, I'm apparently immune.

Even the one time I got so drunk I puked and blacked out I didn't have a hangover. The time I did five shots of five different alcohols in one minute (plus the two G&Ts I'd already had). The worst I've ever experienced is a dry disgustingly fuzzy feeling tongue.

On a happier note, the staff luncheon (with gift exchange) is happening at noon. I do hope someone wants the nice giftie I brought, it included home-made rum cookies (they're yummy if I do say so myself).

The mayor has declared the roads closed to the public, and we're supposed to be getting possibly another foot of snow today. The entire city is effectively shut down. Needless to say, we broke our 24 record by a good 6", which is saying a lot because we get loads of snow up here. Stay home and stay warm too, Steph!

I'd say it is a horrible list in that not one of the 10 films should be anywhere near getting named as the sole choice for "Must See" in the category listed (Star Wars probably comes closest; Naked Gun furthest).

I don't think I've ever seen (or noticed) The Sixth Sense being classified as horror before. Is that a genre assignment anybody would agree with?

My mom got stranded last night since the 14 freeway was closed in both directions. My dad said they had around 9 inches and he was shoveling the driveway this morning. My mom stayed at my sister's condo in Santa Clarita and is going to try to take the train back home this afternoon since the freeway was still closed as of 11am. I miss the old days of being snowed in or it snowing even. One of these days i'm going to go stay overnight when we have a storm like this and be stranded so i can't get back home or even better to work.

See, for me, Godfather IS really on a shortlist; it's maybe my favorite film since the 40s, after Harold and Maude (which I don't really count as a "great film" because I'm too sentimental about it to consider it logically.) But, no Kane? No Casablanca? No City Lights? Poppycock.

Absolutely, the Godfather is a must see film. You can't be an educated movie watcher or student of American pop culture without having seen it. But in the category of Drama it is not the must see film. Though I would entertain the argument. Unlike with Naked Gun, if you consider that the must see comedy film then you're broken.

Awww man at least they did that. My parents house is on a busy street well they live on the corner and there were no snow plows. Same with the freeway. Years ago they used to blow the freeway and their street not now. My dad was outside shoveling snow off their driveway this morning.

On a happier note my mom is should be home by now. She made the train even though the first train pulled into the station and turned around and went the same way it came. She had to wait out in the cold for 2 hours but at least she'll be home tonight.

Right now I'm drinking what I consider a fantastic beer. It's Chili Beer from the Black Mountain Brewing company in Tecate Mexico. There is a green Serrano chili pepper in the bottom of each bottle. It is spicy, and tastes surprizingly good! I got it from Bevmo!

Chili Beer itself is hand made in the small town of Tecate, Mexico.
Each chili pepper is lovingly dropped, by hand, in every bottle then the bottle is filled with a fine Mexican Lager Beer. The result is THE MOST UNUSUAL BEER IN THE WORLD!
The beer was good, damn good, So good in fact, the yuppies started driving in from all over to try it. Something had to be done, So , whenever one of them whined for a "wedge of lime" Ed started putting a hot Serrano chili pepper into the beer instead. Amazingly, about 2 out of ten actually liked the stuff. Surely, thought Ed, the Eighties had come to close.
Their website is cool! (http://www.chilibeer.com)

So I made a purchase at Amazon and it arrived at the apartment today. I wasn't concerned about this because the management office takes packages. Well, apparently today the UPS delivery guy didn't feel like giving it to them and instead left it at our door.

We're not really a high risk area so I'm not too mad. However, the box it shipped in was the original manufacturer's box and so it was completely obvious what was inside so that would concern me a bit. Anyway, showing foresight, the UPS guy decided to hide the package...under our doormat.

At this point you may be jumping to a conclusion as to how the story ended. You might assume I, or Lani, stepped on said doormat, breaking the item.

You'd be wrong, but it was a close thing:

I've been enjoying the heck out of Netflix streaming. Watching an old British drama series called "The Duchess of Duke Street".

Of course that's been distracting me from the actual mailed DVDs in my posession, which is another (similar) series called "Upstairs, Downstairs" (much more well-known, and also excellent)

Well, it does make it clear that the box is left specifically and intentionally for THAT door, so there is no mistaking it for lost, left, basura, etc.

That's why I made them over a week ago:D Actually this year I made 151 rum balls, Capt Morgan balls and Crown Royal ones and now I was looking at the Rumplemintz and thinking that would be divine, Gary laughed at me. I was also thinking the Kahlua might be tasty. I figure I can spend the winter toasty from the inside out! I don't think I've ever made this many kinds but friends brought me 151 to make them some and I had a little bottle of Crown sitting around so....

Pru- I'm making peanut blossoms tonight too! I love them when they are still warm and melty!

Today just keeps getting better. So, we're just about to go to bed, but I have sucessfully managed to hook the charger up to the 110v Transformer we use to power our Christmas Tree & Garland (her name's Judy), and have charged up the old Virgin Phone that we used in 2007, and I'm able to access all the contacts from then.

I know NA has a new number, but all the rest, you need to PM me so I can add/check your cellphone numbers in my contacts !! (addresses if desired) - I love that the $20 cheapie phone still works after being unused and flat for almost 2 years !!

I've been enjoying the heck out of Netflix streaming. Watching an old British drama series called "The Duchess of Duke Street".
That show was the reason I wanted to become a Chef !! I have both DVD sets - the whole two seasons worth - and I love to go back & watch it. I'd love to run the Bentinck.

I'll put in an order for the iPhone app as well, please.

I don't even know what a rum ball is so I have no idea if I would like them. Though I don't like rum as a drink.

As for dogs and chocolate, when I was a kid we let our dogs have some every once in a while; while I don't think it was hyped as much back then it was something vaguely known. Chocolate in large doses (or small dogs) is toxic but it isn't like the first bite kills them. A toxic quantity of standard milk chocolate in a 20 pound dog is about 10 ounces.

Another Saturday morning means another trip to our Farmer's Market. We have quickly become "regulars" at a booth. Oh, not a produce booth, mind you. No, we're regulars at the croissant booth. Croissants are yummy.

Our last dog survived eating quite a lot of chocolate (he got into it while we were gone- not like we gave it to him). He was quite a stinker.

I have since learned that dogs can't have almonds, grapes, or a lot of kinds of bones. I had thought anything but chicken was fair game, but the vet says even things like pork chops can splinter and cause problems. I used to love feeding our current hound grapes but she can't have them anymore.

Currently I'm avoiding packing for our trip to Vegas. I'm hoping the snow is melted.

I assume that, because it's a costume drama, they were giving the dog "doggie chocs" or some other non-toxic substitute, all the while saying it was chocolate. They don't use real bullets in the guns during duels, either. ;)

...Stoat says that despite all that, he suspects they were giving Gemma Jones real champagne (he noticed she tends to mouth other peoples lines while they're saying them - but only when she's drinking champagne in the scene)

It started early this morning. Small, persistant flakes drifting down in a steady snowfall. I had breakfast, I did some work around the apartment, I took care of some email. It still fell. I watched a sappy movie. It still fell. I finally had to face facts.

Last minute shopping does not wait. It's do or die time, and tomorrow promises turn from picturesque to truly nasty. So I headed out. I took my camera with me.

My apartment building as I left:

Fortunately, I live within walking distance to downtown. And, this being Portland, transit is easy. My chosen vehicle, the streetcar.

Please note the 2-3 inches on the ground. This is about 1:00.

Some Portland landmarks...

Pioneer Courthouse:

Powell's Books:

Notice that the snow hasn't slowed down other shoppers, either.

The pendulum sculpture across from Powells. It's interactive - with a good shove you can set it swinging ponderously. This piece is lovingly nicknamed "Satan's Testicle".

One of my favorite little parks in the Pearl, Jameson Square:

Yeah, the snow's piling up now. This is about 3:30.

Got shopping done and got home by 4:00. This is the view out my window:

I'm hunkered down for an evening of mochas, frozen pizza, movies, reading and wrapping presents.

If I forget to say it later, Merry Christmas from the frozen north to all my friends on the LoT!

Also Macadamia Nuts, onions, raisins (worse than grapes), and large amounts of avocado are also toxic. Some people food in large quantity can cause pancreatitis which can be fatal.
