In terms of power saved during the hour, It's pretty much meaningless but as a way to raise awareness of the larger issue of conservation, it's kinda catchy.

Or does it make a lot of people feel like they did something and therefore reduce the pressure to actually do something?

I just spent the last 3 hours trying to get the wife's laptop running again. Somehow she managed to corrupt her user account. It's Windows Vista and it would come up with this error message when she tried to log onto the computer:

"The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded"

The problem is, that was the ONLY profile set up, so you couldn't do anything at all on it. And it was the Administrator! I didn't know that with Vista you should always set up more than one profile, and not use admin for daily working. I don't use Vista anywhere, and don't use that laptop. Cripes!

Luckily I was able to get in on safe mode and do a system restore, back to two days ago. I then went in and made two more profile accounts.

Does everyone know about having more than one account in Vista, and I've living under a rock?

And yes, it was during Earth Hour and I had the lights on.

Or does it make a lot of people feel like they did something and therefore reduce the pressure to actually do something? That's how I feel about it.

If it were an hour each week, I'd be on board. Coming from a background of not using power for a full day each week, it wouldn't be that hard to do.

Maybe Obama could help with the meme that he's a closet Muslim but initiating a government program encouraging conversion to orthodox Judaism as an environmental program.

Shortly after we moved to the Bay Area there was a story on the news that so convinced me of the truth of the stereotype of "Berkeley Liberal Idiocy" that it still lingers 12 years later.

It was a hunger strike some group was doing. But the twist was that it was a "relay" (my word, probably not the one they used) hunger strike. They were broken into teams of four and each person on the team would be on hunger strike for 6 hours and then pass the strike to the next person. By their definition, I'm on a hunger strike every time I go to sleep which is why as I get into bed each night I loudly proclaim "Down with <significant societal form of oppression>" in hopes that by shedding light on the issue with my sacrifice I will slowly reform society. So far it isn't working much, the cat still wears fur, flagrantly flouting my PETA-activism.

Now, I don't doubt the sincerity of those who participate in Earth Hour, any more than I doubted the sincerity of those hunger strikers. And Earth Hour isn't as silly as that hunger strike since at least some small amount of the unused power is actually saved rather than just shifted slightly. But I can't help putting them in roughly the same bucket.

If they had Earth Hour during hours it was light outside I'd be more inclined to participate.

Instead the reusable coffee mug, reusable 'work cutlery' and reusable water cup I use resulting in about 400 less things I am throwing away each month at work will have to make up for it.

So the last dream I had before waking this morning, was me (on a motorcycle) following Lashbear (in a Ford truck) on a 2 lane freeway heading to Long Beach. Then I lost him as we ended up on some weird freeway in the middle of construction. This must have been recycled from my looking at those roads Disneyphile posted about. Even if it was just a dream, great to see you Lashbear. I woke up before we made it to Long Beach. :(

Boris has been stable for a long time, but it looks like he's decompensated a bit. We're hoping he had a kidney infection (even though it didn't show up in the urine) and that he'll improve. He's lost weight, which is alarming. He's not underweight yet, but he's close. He's been a little more active since he's been on the antibiotics, so maybe it is an infection making him worse and he'll get better. It's not like he's on death's door, but I'm reminded that he's a sick kitty, has been for a long time, and won't last forever. He's been such a good friend and I can't stand thinking about life without him.

This goes out to all you tribesmen out there.

A Jewish man was going to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth. According to tradition, when being knighted, the knightee says a set piece in Latin. The knightee had never studied Latin, but memorized the phrase. During the ceremony, his mind went blank. Knowing he was expected to say something in a foreign language he said: "Ma nishtana haleila hazeh mikole halailot." The Queen, upon hearing this, said: "Why is this knight different than all other knights."

Sooo....American Girl opened a store in Denver at the Park Meadows mall. They were giving a goodie bag to the first 100 girls and Rose wanted to be one of them-so we spent the night on the sidewalk outside the store. In the wind snow and drizzle-we were not alone-there were hundreds of people in line hours before they opened.

Rose was #17 in the store. The #1 girl got a free doll-oh well.....she is thrilled with the experience. It was fun, but not something I would run out to do again.

What was in the goodie bag?

A t-shirt for the dolls- it's red with stars on it and says "American Girl - Denver"

The book about the doll of the year "Lanie", an activity book and one of the magazines.

I did not get out without getting her something-she picked a robe for herself (the same one the Rebecca doll wears), some earrings for her girls and we got a snowpant suit with a sweater and snow boots (that even has little snowflakes in the tread)-we also got her Julie dolls ears pierced and got more earrings with that purchase.

Very nice, Matt!

I think I worked too much the last two days. Yesterday was a 12 hour day, and today was 14. I think I'm not very fond of this, in spite of the fact that it was Hairspray, which is a fun show, and the overtime pay.

I don't think I'll be mountain biking tomorrow. I'd kind of had hopes. My friend is leading the ride, and since it's Easter I don't know that he'll get a lot of people so I wanted to make sure he had somebody to go with. But the way I feel right now... I don't think so. The sleep part I can handle, but at this point everything just hurts.

Maybe we'll go to the harbor, and let hubby play with his kayak. I'll sit on the shore and read, and see if something wanders by that's worth taking pictures of.

Song in my head: "Big, Blond, and Beautiful". Not entirely a bad choice, considering.

Twitter was attacked by a neighbor's pitbull last night. The pit was being dog sitted by a teenage girl. She took him out for a walk, just as Hubby was leaving with Twitter on his nightly jaunt. The pit broke his leash and got hold of Twitter and flung him in the air. The teen couldn't get ahold of the pit and he attempted to enter our house to get Twitter again. We finally got him to run and she caught him and re-leashed him. We rushed Twitter to Emergency Pet care where he went under the knife for the puncture wounds he had gotten from the pit to save his lungs. $1500.00 later, along with a report to Animal Control, we now have Twitter home recovering. We have notified the dog sitter and the owner (who lives a couple streets over) about the cost. Of course we are going to have problems collecting. Does anyone know if we should contact a lawyer? Or should we just proceed through small claims court?

Sorry to hear about Twitter (although at first I was trying to figure out how a pit bull could cause problems for a social networking service).

I have no legal advice, but I would start by taking the high road. Don't start the issue by yelling and screaming and demanding the money. But make sure it is clear that you expect payment to cover the emergency vet expenses.

BarTopDancer
04-06-2010, 01:15 PM
I'm so sorry to hear Wolfy.

I hate to say but I'm not sure the teenage sitter should be held financially responsible. Yes, she was walking when the dog broke loose from his leash (versus her letting go of it setting him loose) but the owners never should have hired someone who couldn't control their dog to watch it.

alphabassettgrrl
04-06-2010, 03:20 PM
Oh, no, Wolfy! Poor Twitter!! I hope your little one recovers quickly and well.

No advice about how to collect the money from the owner. My neighbor's dog attacked a cat here, and she paid, but it was a small amount.

Strangler Lewis
04-06-2010, 03:35 PM
Well, there are lawyers who specialize in dog bite cases. Such a lawyer might be able to advise you if the dog owner's homeowner's insurance covers what happened. Such a lawyer might also suggest causes of action that might be pleaded by your husband. So, it might be worth a phone call or, perhaps some internet research into such a lawyer in your area who might advertise and have a general discussion about what you might expect on his web site.

wolfy999
04-06-2010, 04:06 PM
If the pitbull actually broke the leash, I'd say the owner is more liable than the sitter.

Not according to animal control. It would be the parents of the sitter that is liable.

Kevy Baby
04-06-2010, 04:22 PM
Not according to animal control. It would be the parents of the sitter that is liable.I am not sure that I would rely on an underpaid county employee for legal advice* - get a second opinion (Strangler Lewis has some good info that can be trusted). Whoever pays should be covered for these types of incidents by their homeowners insurance (assuming that it covers something that happens off of their property).

Also, I would think that filing a police report would be a good idea (if they will take it - I am not sure).

* This is not meant as a dig on county/government employees - just that this person, while he/she has exposure to this kind of situation that the average Joe doesn't, probably is not aware of all of the legal possibilities/ramifications.

BarTopDancer
04-06-2010, 04:25 PM
I'd question why the parents of a minor who was watching a dog would be responsible for the owner provided leash breaking resulting in the attack.

You must be angry and it's so easy to direct your anger at the teenage girl who was walking the dog, but if the leash broke and the dog got away it's really not her fault.

wolfy999
04-06-2010, 04:27 PM
Animal Contol also mentioned that Homeowner's Insurance has to be notified ahead of time of a Pit or Rot on property to be covered. We'll have to wait and see on that of course.

No police report since no law was actually broken, the Pit did start out on a leash, obviously one not strong enough to hold the dog, but still within the law.

You may also want to contact your own homeowner's insurance company. If any of the other parties does have insurance, your insurance company may be able to step in and do the legal legwork for you (subrogation). At least that's how it works in the auto insurance world, not 100% certain the same applies for homeowners but it's worth a call.

On that point he's likely correct. It may also be possible that even if they did properly inform their insurance company...the result of that information was that the insurance policy excludes the pitbull. So you may still be going after the homeowner directly even if they are insured.

Yeah, it occurred to me after I posted that the only reason they'd do it is if they had a financial interest should the responsible party not be able to pay. Since it's not like you could make a claim against your own insurance, they've got no reason to care one way the other.

First of all, thank GOD Twitter wasn't hurt worse than he was. The bite of a pit is not an enjoyable one.

Now, about the pet sitter....

Is she under 18 or is she a professional dog walker that would have the appropriate insurance coverage? Was she being paid to do this job by the owners. If she is a professional or works for a professional company, you should be fully covered. However, if the owners of the dog hired a teenager to walk their dog, then they are liable for anything that happens.

We have had insurance claims in the past but we are fully insured as a pet sitting company.

There's a big difference between hiring a teen to clean a litter box and hiring a teen to walk your beast.

That said, what can an owner do differently when the leash breaks and the dog is hellbent on disemboweling another dog?

Dealing with jerks is actually pretty easy. So I'd like to thank the person who just met for a new project for being pretty clearly a jerk. He may think he's getting to me but he's not and his jerkiness does nothing to make my life more difficult since, as I said, dealing with jerks is easy.

The hard ones are the jerks who are good at acting like non-jerks. Those're the ones who'll trip me up.

We don't actually hear from her but she updates her facebook. I love what she finds interesting. So far the snipers at the White House, the Holocaust Museum was disturbing, so many monuments it's depressing, George Washington's bathroom is 200ft from his house and some kid passed out on the dinner cruise so they had to go back early.

I agree that a cat is not likely to hurt another animal while you leave it under the care of a pet sitter, however the likely hood of the cat getting out, hurt, or getting attacked by a dog or raccoon is more likely with a less attentive person.

If this dog actually broke the leash (which I think is very unlikely) it would have either been a) damaged before hand, b) not appropriately sized for a dag that large or c) not installed properly. A professional dog walker would know that the dog was aggressive to other dogs before hand and would have been VERY attentive while walking this dog and would have not walked with a damaged or inappropriate leash. There are so MANY thing wrong with this situation that could have easily been avoided with someone who knew what they were doing.

Now, mistakes do happen - even with professionals. I have had some pretty scary situations in the past 5 years that have taught me more about what COULD go wrong with a dog, a cat, or even a rabbit or turtle.

In dealing with the insurance company on it, we discovered that somehow, we have been living without Renter Insurance (yikes!). Needless to say, that situation was rectified immediately. By adding this insurance, it gave is a 10% discount on our auto insurance. The 10% savings nearly offset the incremental cost of the Renters Insurance: it only added about $10 per month to our bill.

Details, details, details!!

Okay, you asked for it....

We did the 6 course tasting menu.

Started off with the amuse bouche: a tiny ball of delicious, not at all fishy crab covered with impossibly thinly sliced avocado, resting on a pool of watermelon something or other. Served with a sparkling rose.

First course: tuna tartare on a fennel slaw with a soy dressing of some kind and microgreens. I can't recall the wine, but it was very light.

Second course: the most amazing soup I've ever had in my life and the standout course of the evening. The bowl was presented with a little rolled-up something and a spoonful of red goo. The rolled-up thingy was a duck ragu ravioli and the red goo was something red wine-ish. Then the server poured in this most amazing sweet onion veloute. I wanted to bathe in it. It was perfection. Wine was a chardonnay.

Third course: foie gras three ways. Left to right, a pate, a frisee salad with walnuts and apple vinaigrette, grilled foie gras with a red wine jelly, and a foie gras cappuccino, which we deemed the meat milkshake. Wine was a sauternes.

Fourth course: sea bass wrapped in a thin layer of chorizo on top of a barley "risotto" with grilled peppers and onions on the side and a tomato sauce poured over. It was amazing how the flavor of spice was there, but it wasn't "hot". Wine was a rioja.

Fifth course: venison with huckleberries, cabbage (I think), and pureed potatoes. At this point I was drunk. It was delicious, and the Rat was even able to eat the venison without activating his "weird meat" sensor. Wine was a red zinfandel.

Sixth course: amazing chocolate souffle which I couldn't finish because I was so stuffed and a mocha ice cream I didn't eat because it was coffee flavored. The souffle was so light and fluffy-yet-creamy. Can't remember the wine exactly, but I think it was sparkling. Again: drunk. Trouble keeping balance on way to bathroom.

The check came with six baby madeleines and chocolate sauce for dipping. I was so stuffed, but they were mostly air and lemon scented and I think I ate 5 of them.

The meal came with a "Burger Bar" cookbook for each of us.

I volunteered to scan the thousands of slides my dad took (about 40 years worth). Bill and I bought a slide scanner, as he has a bunch that he took in Europe in the 70's that he wants to scan also.

The scanner came this afternoon, so I decided that no time better than the present to start. I set it up, got it working, opened the first box of slides, and discovered that they were all in random order. I opened another box. Same thing. And then another, and another, and another... Slides from the 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's all mixed together in no order whatsoever!

Now, before I can scan anything, I need to sort through and put thousands of slides in order! How in hell did they get completely randomized?! WTF?!

Assuming the data is at least somewhat clustered, date order.....

The approach I'd have taken is to scan and sort. Scan them in the order you find them but as they come off the scanner put them in order. That way you still only interact with each slide once but end up with both collections (physical and digital) organized.

JWBear
04-10-2010, 10:41 AM
We bought a scanner that can be used without connecting it to the computer (it saves the data on a SD card). We did this so that we can scan while watching TV/movies in the living room. Scanning and sorting at the same time would require it be connected to the computer, which would defeat the purpose. Good suggestion though.

It's not as bad as i though at first. Most of the slides from a particular date are grouped together. The weird thing is that you'll have, say, 18 slides from May 1966 all together in one box; 12 more all together in a second box; and the remaining 6 scattered randomly in a third.

Ghost Hunters? They make me giggle. Especially on those times when these butch guys run and scream like little girls.

And once in a long while something interesting happens. I like that they bring instruments and that most of the time, nothing happens. That seems normal and reasonable.

It's a dramatization, more than looking for evidence. I do like them but for different reasons.

I started volunteering at the nearby SPCA a couple blocks from us about a month ago. Currently I'm just doing feline associate stuff (which mostly just involves cleaning their rooms and sitting with them for a while to help keep them socialized).

Pixel, our cat, really, really hates other cats. I've seen her react with complete calm to both giant quiet dogs and small yappy dogs. When given the chance she actually rode a turkey for several yards in her attempt to take it down. She's a bit skittish around other people but that isn't consistent.

But she hates cats. She hates seeing them outside through glass. The one time we brought an obvious runaway stray inside the house she completely freaked.

Anyway, the first time I worked with the cats I come home and sit on the couch. She comes over and starts sniffing my hand. "Cute," thinks I, "she can smell the other cat." And then she started attacking my hand full on. Teeth, claws, yowling, hissing. A fair amount of blood results. The rest of the evening I'm an invading force, she found a high observation point and just stared at me.

Lesson learned. The next two weeks I get home, I immediately change clothes and wash my hands and while her reaction is much more muted she'll still swat my hands if they get to close and she still doesn't trust me.

Last night, I came home showered, specifically washed my hands with strong antiseptic soap using a scrubbing spong from the kitchen then after that used Purell and then ate my dinner of barbecue chicken with my bare hands.

After all that I go and find the cat, let her sniff my hand and fwap. Claws in but she swatted my hand hard enough it actually hurt a little bit.

As I say, Pixel really hates other cats. And the odd thing is I can't figure out how she knows to hate other cats since she was rescued before even being weaned and since then, other than that 2 minutes with the stray I mentioned earlier, has never actually been in the presence of another cat.

I am sorry about your wounds, hope they are healing well.

Maybe she no longer recognizes herself as a cat but as part of your family. She's just jealous that her human is spending time with others that are beneath her.

At least she doesn't take revenge like our Tigger. Gary came home a day later than usual last weekend and Tigger was mad! First she scratched up his suitcase and got yelled at. So she went and peed on his shoes. Then to top it off she got on the table and peed on his wallet and keys! She was really mad at him!

Of course the day after he left the kid and I went on a field trip to the Ballet. When we got home she tried to pee on my bra!! Later that night I found that she had also peed in the tiny case that holds my meat thermometer. I still can't figure out how she managed to pee in a small piece of plastic the size of a quarter and didn't miss a drop!

Some cats just have really bad attitudes!

Ghoulish Delight

has never actually been in the presence of another cat.
Well I imagine that that there could be the problem. Never having learned how to deal with other cats, all she has to go on is the pure instinctual gut reaction that other cat odors trigger. Had she grown up around other cats she'd have likely learned to temper that instinct with experience.

Alex
04-16-2010, 08:23 AM
Well, that would be one of my questions, how does she even know what another cat is and smells like to hate it and be jealous (and she isn't jealous of other things). Plus jealousy (I don't really anthropomorphize animals so I also don't really think it would be anything similar to what we'd call jealousy) wouldn't explain it all since she's woken me up in the middle of the night yowling at the window and when I looked it was because of a cat sitting on a balcony in the next building over.

Mostly I'm just curious that I apparently can't wash off or cover whatever smell it is that she's reacting to.

We did have a cat when I was a kid that reacted badly to a new cat in the house (and it was specific to the cat we had others already). Shortly after the new cat arrived she started peeing in the stove burners. Swear to god. Now, I in no way believe the cat understood the chain of events that would result but let me tell you that boiling off cat piss results in an extremely unpleasant experience. And it is really hard to get in the habit of checking the burners for pee before turning them on. When we passed the new cat on to someone else she stopped.

Alex
04-16-2010, 08:28 AM
all she has to go on is the pure instinctual gut reaction that other cat odors trigger.

She reacts even when she can't smell them. She reacts even when they aren't in her territory. She hisses at cats a hundred feet away. When we moved into this place and had a wall covering mirror she also attacked that cat too (though she has learned to live with it) for a couple of weeks; she's never reacted to the cats that live in smaller mirrors.

I'm not particularly worried about why she hates cats. I've known plenty of extremely loner cats (even after having had plenty of lifelong cohabitation with them). I'm just amused by how total it is.

Ghoulish Delight
04-16-2010, 08:39 AM
Okay, odor and sight. Still sounds like an instinctual reaction and lack of socialization with other cats. She doesn't need to "know" what other cats look or smell like she's hardwired to "know'.

Alex
04-16-2010, 09:14 AM
I think we're saying the same thing. Obviously the dislike of other cats is in someway hardwired into her. To the extent that I'm curious about the how it is at the much deeper level of how that would happen biologically in the neurology of a cat.

And of course it is possible that it was something social that happened in those few weeks between birth and being found in a gas station parking lot that imprinted itself powerfully.

But mostly in telling the story I'm just amused that I am now going through just short of CDC decontamination procedures just to keep my cat from glaring at me for an evening and it still doesn't work.

Since we have three other cats, she gets exiled into her own room.

She hisses and spits (sometimes to the point of gasping - she is an old cat), but all the venom is directed to the other cat(s) - never towards us.

My understanding it is a legal requirement with the Simba lot trams crossing a public street. I believe eventually they'll be on all of them (that the lawyers said if some have them they might as well all have them) but I don't pay much attention to such things anymore so I may have it mixed up, I just remembered seeing it passing a couple months ago and searched for the MousePad thread.

WTF! Did someone finally fall out?Yes, there was actually a lawsuit with someone who sustained a traumatic brain injury.

Also, Alex has that right about the Simba trams. They have to have doors to cross a city street.

RStar

I saw the tram with doors last night. While I don't care for the idea of dealing with them to get on the tram, they didn't seem to slow things down as far as I could tell. Everyone figured out how to use them okay (the guests have to open the doors, they are not air driven automatics). But frankly, I'm surprised it took them this long to start putting them in.

And Alex, have you thought about wearing gloves of some sort while working there? Or even taking a change of clothes and shoes there to change into and then out of to minimize the odor transfer after getting home? Just a thought. I hate to see you need to watch out for a attack cat in your own home! I hope it works out.

It is weird how animals pick up on things. Earthquakes, animals outside and down the street, where someone has been, etc. Good thing we aren't like that! We'd never get away with anything! :D

From what I've heard, only a few of them have the doors so far.

That's correct. Somehow they make the tram look extra overloaded with people even though the space is the same.

It's been a while but I heard the reason for the doors is that people in Florida are always falling out (the trams there still travel around the parking lot and people jump out before the tram stops). If they put doors on trams in Florida they have to also put them on trams here.

So people get stupid in Florida. Or none of this is true.

Planning a luncheon event at work. About 450 people coming. Some companies are buying tables, some are people coming by themselves, some want to sit with certain people and not with others, some are paying now, some are paying at the door, some are paying partial, some are comps, some are scholarships... This is like a math word problem that Excel is helping me sort out. On top of all that, some companies have a list of guests, some don't, some won't know until the day of the event. And an exact count is needed to order the right number of lunches + an estimation of walk-ins that day. This is so left-brained that it's making me crazy, but at the same time, it's kinda fun, too.

Info used to be a bit more private, you didn't have to jump through hoops to keep things limited to friends only. Certain features were easier to use (some had 2 different ways to access them), etc.

Ghoulish Delight
04-21-2010, 02:43 PM
Hmm, I personally think Facebook has greatly improved the privacy options. Yeah, I suppose the original toggle switch was more definitive, but it also meant I couldn't be at all selective about my level of privacy.

Oh, and you were greatly mistaken if you thought facebook used to be MORE private by default. One of the biggest early complaints was just how much info was available to "your networks" (which you became a part of whether you knew it or not) by default. The only difference now is that they make the lack of default privacy more obvious.

I still have a lot of issue with the usability of the added privacy features, but putting UI design issues aside I've found that, with little exception, each change has been a step in the right direction for privacy control. Facebook becomes much more functional (and distinguished from other services) for me the more finely I can filter what I post.
