It's Friday afternoon, doesn't anyone get off early on Fridays anymore? I'd like to be one of them. There's no school today, so there's a lot of noise at my house today.

Jealous much?

Just think, you could with a little legal paperwork be the most perfect of human beings:

A left-handed Craig who sometimes gets to wear sandals (with socks) to work.

You'd be the envy of the world.

I'll just call you Jim then......

:D

While they sound the same they aren't spelled the similar, like replacing the G with the C by accident. Is this person not close to you, and actually thinks that's your name? Or was it a brain fart?

You could call them "Brait" (for Brain Fart). ;)

And that picture of your feet is kinda scary. Like if you kicked a few inches forward you'd die of electricution!

What a fabulous day. Slept in, had a long shower (love the on-demand water heater), romped about in the sheets getting all sweaty again, watched some cheesy television, had leftovers from yesterday's lunch, had leftovers from two days' ago cake, watched some less cheesy television, had my lap warmed by a kitty, and not worn a bra ALL DAY!

My day involved cancelling a mountain bike ride at what turns out to be the last minute (because I worked until midnight last night and couldn't do it then) and taking my dog to the vet because she refused to put weight on one of her feet. On the bright side, they cleaned her ears and cut her nails (nail cutting on a basset hound is a bit difficult and I always seem to get it too close if I try). We're hoping it's just a strain or arthritis and that she'll feel better by Monday. The vet's probably going to need to take x-rays.

But my honey's home, and I feel better, and I have bike-racing on TiVo. :) The Tour Down Under is on this week. It's exciting. They're racing up and over hills in 100' F weather. Crazy. But I'm happy they are giving us a half-hour every day, instead of trying to fit the whole week-long race into an hour summary at the end.

If anyone wants to grow veggies indoors, these are the best things I have found! I have three now, one with tomatos growing, one with herbs (Basil mostly, to go with the tomatos), and one I just planted today for seedlings to transplant in the outside garden.

Aerogarden (http://www.aerogardenstore.com/promotion/index.php?promoName=catalog&pageName=compare_gardens)

You can get them (although limited in models) at Bed, Bath, & Beyond and Kohls.

You're catching GD disease - it's capsaicin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsaicin):D

....and you remember the bit on the cooking shows where they say to reduce the heat of the chilli you're making you can remove the seeds.... well it appears it's the white pith around the seeds that's the worst part.

The funny part is birds can't feel the burning from capsaicin. That's why the eat the chilli fruits and poop the seeds all over, thus making more chillis !!

When my youngest daughter was still in nappies and wanted to do finger painting while I programmed, she decided to choose all of the pretty red things in the pantry. That would be Tabasco Sauce, Cayenne Pepper, Hot Paprika and some Chilli Powder.

She then mixed all of the pretty red things on the top a industrial-sized mayonaise bucket lid. After painting a pretty picture of a three-eyed something or other on the lid, she touched her crotch, and all hell broke loose.

When she came screaming out of the kitchen to the desk where I was programming, I looked at her hands and nearly died for fear she had cut herself..until the acrid paste almost ripped my eyeballs out of their sockets.

As I recall, it's the only bath she ever fought to have...

Poor baby! That's horrible and it reminds me of a story I heard (read) many years ago in Angela Bowie's bio. (I will, evidently, read most anything). It involved some sort of group sex encounter and heavy drinking. I might be mistaken, but I think Mick Jagger was in there, too. The then Mrs. Bowie somehow ended up with someone pouring 80+ proof alcohol on or near her lady bizness. Yeeeeow.

Tagalongs are the patties (covered in chocolate). The PB sandwich cookies are also known as Do Si Does. Somoas are now called Caramel deLites.

(I don't have my sheet but I am pretty sure our troop has extra Somoas (Caramel deLites). We may also have a couple boxes of Tagalongs but I'm not so sure about that. If you'd like me to check I'd be happy to.)

There are 2 bakeries that supply GS cookies, ABC and Little Brownie Bakers. I understand (though do not personally know) that there is a difference in taste of some varieties depending upon which bakery supplies the cookies...I can't remember which company supplies our cookies in Kansas City.

Little Brownie Bakers are is the one I'm familiar with. My wife was a GS leader and worked for them as well for about 12 years, but left the whole thing about 7 years ago. I know they made a change to the recipe to Samoas once saying they were softer and easier to eat. My jaws would get soooo tired after eating 2 or 3 of the old ones.

So you're saying they still make them under the old names and new names? And the recipes seem different between them? I wasn't aware of that....

Dear Work,

You gave me the day off yesterday but called me no less then 15 times (15!) from about 8:15 am to 3:30 pm. You gave me the day off, along with most of our staff, to help save a little money for the month. I'm a team player. But I'd like some team player dollars to go with working on my day off.

But I guess that at this point I'll just be happy to still be employed.

Please don't take advantage of me.

All of these things are asynchronous, so you don't have to break pace to deal with them. And always remember, life can go on (if not a little cluncky) without you.

I'm cleaning my office, and came up with a solution to the now-ginormous stacks of industry magazines. I'm going to go through each one, tear out the stuff I'm interested in and then recycle the rest. I'll put the removed articles in a binder, and eventually scan them so I have them for good without taking up any space at all.

From that point, I'll do the same as they arrive in the mail. Goodbye clutter! :D

Right on. We did some work on the garage over the weekend. Unpacked the very last of the boxes from when we moved what - 6 years ago now?

One box was trash. Must have gotten mixed in somehow but we moved and stored a box of nothing but trash that should have gone to the dump.

On the brighter side, I took a whole car load to the goodwill. Lot's of books and little kids toys and clothes.

I realize I could have had a great garage sale - but it's been sitting in there so long I just couldn't wait until we got around to having one.

I must tell you - once I started on the path to getting rid of stuff, it felt great. The more I got rid of, the more I wanted to get rid of more.

We've got 2 projects we're about to undertake. Replacing our absurdly noisy bathroom fan. Not to jinx it, but that should be straight forward. Buy a new one, make sure the duct sizes match, some screws some wires, voila.

Next up will be a complete rebuild of our bedroom closet. Right now we have one 9+ ft long rod and shelf. Like everything else the previous owners did, it's half-assed. The shelf supports they were NOT made to handle the weight of all of our clothes + stroage boxes across a 9ft span. The need to replace it became urgent when we tried to put a box back up this weekend and it slid right off of the sagging shelf.

So we're going to rip it out. In its place will be multiple heights of hanging rods, a couple shelves, and space for some sort of shelving or cubbies or something tbd. And we'll be adding lighting.

We'll also be getting rid of the absurd doors on there. 8ft. x 4ft. x 2in thick solid wood sliding monsters. Hanging from a track that barely supports their weight. They're a bitch to slide and a bigger bitch to re-set onto the track when they fall off due to the track being bent from their weight. They also prevent us from decent access to the middle area of the closet.

If we simply take them off and make them go away, it'll be an improvement. Eventually I'd like to get a set of 3 light weight doors on there, but that will be phase 2.

If it goes well, we'll move on to the closet in the guest room. Gotta get some use out of the circular saw I just bought for the project :D

If it helps, we were able to replace just the actual fan unit instead of having to pull and replace the entire fixture. No problem with ducts because the duct attaches to the fan enclosure, which we didn't touch.

Check next to the full fan fixtures for smaller boxes with just the fan units. Less expensive, too. Something like this (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100507589&N=10000003+90021+500492), though not exactly.

Much easier (usually the fan just plugs in with an Edison plug: no wiring needed) and cheaper. Although in our case, the fart fan in our bathroom was an odd size that took some serious digging my part.

Meanwhile, the easy solution to hiding a closet without doors is to hang a curtain in place of a door. Super easy to do and very inexpensive.

Although a router doesn't take much space...In my opinion, there really is only one router to get: Porter Cable 690 (http://www.deltaportercable.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=11094). Also, stay away from variable speed routers - they are more susceptible to problems.

If you have a hankering to try out the PC 690, let me know and I will be happy to loan you mine.

Cubbies/shelves in a closet are da bomb, go for it!

An alternative to leaving the closet gaping open is to get spring loaded curtain rods and hang a lovely curtain(s) across it. When we bought our place, there was no door on the 2nd bedroom closet. I hung a sheer across the doorway. Even when the sheer's open it looks better than just no door at all.

Get this.

CP pulled the fan and motor out of the housing this evening to double check measurements. She noticed 2 things. First, that the housing itself isn't going to come down without a fight, so fan-replacement-only may be our only option.

Second, she had trouble locating exactly where the duct opening was in order to measure it. When I got home I helped take a closer look...the opening to the duct was covered by a foam-rubber disc! WTF?! We pulled that off and the fan seemed instantly quieter and like it was pulling more air.

Still too loud for our tastes, but geebus, we've been living for 2 years with a fan that had no outlet. Laaaaaame.

The no longer have m favorite GS Cookies. I don't remember what they were called, but the were a white cookie with chocolate stripes on top.

I can't remember what those were called. Try "Thanks-a-lot". They are shortbread (which is the same "white" cookie as the one you liked) with a thin chocolate layer on the bottom. One of my favorites.

Hmmm. Little Brownie Bakery must be offering them to some councils. They aren't on the GS cookie site as an offered cookie this year. I know they were offered last year (but not here, we get ABC offerings). In any case, Thanks-a-Lot are offered through councils selling from ABC this year.

According to the info on the GSCOC website Thanks-A-Lot and All Abouts are the same cookies.

In 2008, the Council welcomed a new cookie baker, ABC Baker, a subsidiary of Westin Foods, which produces many of America’s favorite breads and snacks. All your favorite Girl Scout cookies are still available. Thin Mints are still called Thin Mints, but other cookie varieties will have different names: Caramel DeLites (formerly Samoas), Peanut Butter Patties (formerly Tagalongs), Peanut Butter Sandwich (formerly Do-si-dos), Shortbread (formerly Trefoils), and Thanks-A-Lot (formerly All Abouts). New to the line up was the very popular and tangy Lemonades, and Daisy Go Rounds, which come in convenient 100-calorie packs. All these delicious varieties are still just $4 a box.

Here (http://www.girlscoutcookies.org/meet_cookies.asp) is the GS.org info on cookies offered nationwide. It appears as though the OC council recently switched from Little Brownie to ABC. Perhaps they were making an association between the two as they are very similar cookies. Each bakery is required to offer Thin Mints, Do-Si-Does and Shortbread. The other offerings come from a list but are at the discretion of the 2 bakeries (which is also why some cookies are called by 2 different names-- depends on the bakery). Unlike Somoas and Caramel D'Lites (which are ostensibly the same), these 2 cookies may be similar but they are not the same. Prior to Thanks-a-Lot, ABC offered Animal Treasures not All Abouts.

eta: There is a possibility that All Abouts were offered prior to 2005 by ABC which is when O became involved in GS. (But I believe they have always been an exclusive offering of LBB and were offered up until last year.)

Not quite. I remember the ones you're talking about and they specifically had stripes of chocolate, on the top if I recall correctly. Thanks-a-lots have a full chocolate layer on the bottom.

I tolerate Thanks-A-Lots because they are delicious and the generic messages of thanks printed on them are innocuous enough. I DETESTED All-A-Abouts because the "It's All About ___________" messages on them were beyond lame.

We had our cookie fix about 2 months ago. My husband's employer is the distributor for the area. His job was to meet and coordinate everything to make sure everyone gets their cookies to distribute.

At the end of their primary meeting, he was gifted several boxes of cookies. And by boxes I mean one large box that contains one of each type of cookie. One large box went home with us and the rest to his office.

Cookies!

Depending on where BTD bought her cookies last year, she could have very well purchased All Abouts. Orange County did switch to ABC in 2008 as I previously posted, but if she purchased anywhere in LA County or San Diego County...she would have bought Little Brownies products. I can't blame any Scout in the OC Council for telling her that she's buying All Abouts, since that is what anyone who used to sell from Little Brownies would identify them as...especially after the design change that Little Brownies made last year. In 2008, they changed the shape to a round cookie with the words "courage" "confidence" "character" "fun", etc. embossed on them much like the current "Thanks-A-Lot" design. We loved the change since the old oval cookie required an odd-shaped box which made cookie distribution and packing a tad more difficult.

As far as GSUSA is concerned, the "Thanks-A-Lot" cookie is considered an "All About" since nationally they try not to make any differentiation between the bakers. (Just as ABC billed the "Thanks-A-Lot" the new "Animal Treasure" cookie when it switched in 2006). The recipe may be slightly different than the All Abouts, but as far as selling...they are simply considered a name change just as the Trefoils/Shortbread and Samoas/Carmel deLites are billed as the same cookies.

Personally, I think they should call everything by a uniformed name, but I've been told it is a licensing issue with the 2 bakers (as well as the slightly different recipe).

I've figured out my Mardi Gras costume! I'm so happy about it finally jelling in my brain, and to actually have 54 of the 60 required components.

The city charter says the mayors office is allowed 60 take home cars (cars that employees can take home and drive back/forth to work). They have something like 5x that many, and they're SUPPOSED to respond to the Inspector General's report about it by today (not sure if they're actually going to make that deadline).

Unless they respond in some stupid way (ALWAYS a possibility around here!), I'm making a sandwhich board out of foam core, but it will be shaped like a baseball diamond home plate and edged in black duck tape (yes, a k not a t) - and have 60 matchbox/hotwheel cars attached to it. My 'verbal' catch phrase will be "This is what 60 looks like, Mr. Mayor" and hopefully I'll be able to get in his line of sight when he rides in the Zulu parade - before I head to the Quarter with some friends.

We've never done the Quarter before on Mardi Gras day, and we're not planning on staying late or hanging out on Bourbon street, but it should still be fun.

I need to go to one more Walmart to find those last 6 cars!
