Well, it is made of eggs.... :)

Brought up on home made eggnog, the store bought variety never tasted right, then I found out this interesting tidbit:

Modern FDA regulations permit eggnog to contain less than 1% egg yolk solids

My mom says she uses a minimum of 12 raw egg yolks - salmonella be damned

After weighing all of my options for tonight, I have decided to just go to a friend's house and hang out and watch movies all night. just the 2 of us. I really wanted to go out of town, but I can't justify the cost of gas. I was also invitied to a few different local venues where different friend's bands are playing, but that got ruled out because I won't drink and drive tonight. Oh well, should still be fun and it is better than staying home alone.

I hadn't thought about how I felt about eggnog outside of its season. On the one hand I like it being special to Yule. On the other hand, it's eggnog! And should be consumed as often as possible.

What are you talking about? A summertime favorite at family BBQs is Devilled Eggnog. My mom makes hers with pickle relish, but she always makes a "virgin" batch for me.

Musings on 2010. I came to terms with the fact that as painful as it was to discover I am more of a dog person. The long happy flirtation with felines began many years ago. As the years drew on, I still felt a void in my life. A void I tried to fill with many things, but in the end it was a void that was only filled with the love of a pug or two.

Sadly, I have been I've been over the legal long beach pet limit for some time. After a disagreement over parking with the neighbor I believe they reported my 'illegal harboring'. I need to find homes immediately for 11 beatiful kitties. Though it will hurt in the short term I will find joy in placing them in lovin homes and will mop my tears in the folds of my sweet thurston. Please let me know which cats you would like to adopt. I only have until jan 7 to comply.

Actually I was thinking it might be good to have a watch- but all of them need new batteries. My dad's old watch, a Goofy one, a purple one (would never wear pink!!!!), or the tiny little pretty one my mom bought me. Given how close we are to the wire, I doubt it will happen at all.

Ghoulish Delight
01-04-2011, 03:48 PM
The last two watches I've worn on a daily basis are "automatics" - they wind themselves simply by the momentum of wearing them. I doubt I'll ever go back to a watch with batteries.

Alex
01-04-2011, 03:54 PM
I don't want a self-winding (or solar powered) watch because then I'd wear the same watch for the rest of my life. The death of a battery is my trigger to treat myself to a new watch.

Ghoulish Delight
01-04-2011, 04:06 PM
I'm clumsy enough that my trigger is when the crystal is scratched up enough that I'd need to send it in to get it replaced. I think at this point I keep wearing a watch mostly because if I didn't, judging by the abuse my watch faces take, I'd shatter my wrist without one.

JWBear
01-04-2011, 04:13 PM
I can never keep a wristwatch running for more than a month or so. It doesn't matter if it's a wind-up, battery powered, or self-winding - digital or analog. They all just stop on me. Must be my magnetic personality...

alphabassettgrrl
01-04-2011, 07:24 PM
I'm told my grandpa was like that- never could keep a watch running.

I was successful in my quest- so a pretty watch with a square face and numbers, and my dad's old watch with just tick-marks both have new batteries and the guy even set the right time!

Depends on what you want. Excitement/nightlife you go to Oahu (a bit like San Diego though, IMHO). Wanna go super slow and just lounge on your hotel's beach, you go to Kauai. Want the best of both worlds you hit Maui.

Alex
01-06-2011, 10:14 PM
I should say, I say Kauai but default because it is, in my opinion, the prettiest of the islands I've been to. I don't think I ever spent any time on a beach there, whenever I was there it was for school projects and I was in the company of locals with specific work to do.

So it may really suck as a tourist.

It amuses me the conflicting information out there on this topic - mainly in terms of the order of these three items (shown how I have always endorsed a check):

(my checking account #)
(My signature)I think I have found sites which list just about every possible sequence of the above three items.

As some of you know, I work in the printing business and we do a fair amount of Direct Mail Marketing. Occasionally, I like to remind everyone that there is a National Do Not Mail list (much like the national Do Not Call registry) that is maintained by the DMA (Direct Marketers Association). Unlike the Do Not Call list, the Do Not Mail list is maintained and used by respond mailers (such as us) voluntarily and is offered as a tool to individuals who want to control the amount of mail they receive and what kind of solicitations you receive (no, you cannot use this to stop bills from coming in :)).

If you would like to place your name on the Do Not Mail list, you can register at https://www.dmachoice.org

It disgusts me how how much is deducted by the frickin' government :mad:If it makes you feel any better, if the government weren't deducting that, the supply/demand model of economics holds that the check would be for less. So the net result is not as much of a decrease of money in your pocket as you think it is (the difference being contingent how elastic/inelastic your profession's salary curve is).

Thanks, I don't actually consider it a demotion (and from a corporate hierarchy point of view it is a lateral move) but from a business person's perspective it is definitely a step backwards.

But I've advanced to a point along this chain where I really do know I don't want to advance any farther and while I'm good at my job I don't really care about my job. Our phones here at the office went down last Friday at about 2:30 and are still down. Found out that due to the rain and a car hitting something, a main trunk line is down because it was flooded. Apparently, it is a 3600 twisted pair (3600 phone line) segment. AT&T has been working around the clock through the weekend - I spoke with the guys working on it last night (if you see the right lane of eastbound MacArthur closed between Bristol and Main - now you know what it is about).

Yesterday went out and bought a Go Phone for $30.00 and are having our phones forwarded to it. I also set up an eFax number (along with a dummy GMail account) to cover faxes. We sent out a broadcast email Monday morning to all of our contacts Friday morning.

Hopefully everything is back up later today or tomorrow at the latest.

Oddly, we still have internet, even though our fax line (which is the carrier line for our DSL) is down.

I know 10 mil is 1000th of an inch or so I was told. I want to buy a laminating machine and the highest it goes is 10 mil. I dont have anything to compare it to. Can anyone compare it to something like an object. Or compare to sheets of computer paper for example. I just want to see exactly how thick 10 mil will be. This makes me think.

We feed our kids all this info about farms and farm animals, as there's a sort of traditional precedent that makes us link up children's education and farms. But really, doesn't that come from the days when lots of children were growing up ON farms, and it was only natural they should first be taught about their environment? "But kids LIKE farms," the culture at large responds. Hmm... do they like farms because they genuinely are interested in farming, or because it's what we've been teaching them about and producing toys for all this time? If we were to replace farm themes in early childhood toys, what WOULD we replace them with?

Fun to muse on. Not particularly useful, but fun to think about.

I find farming to be a socially important topic to enforce. It's becoming more and more obvious that the level of abstraction between us and the source of our food has unintended and undesirable consequences. We need to continue SOME attempt to keep the idea that where our food comes from is a real, tangible place with life in the social milieu.

So, the next stage of the home theatre update was completed tonight. Put in the new TiVo over the weekend and moved the old one to the bedroom.

And then found out that not all programs can be transferred from the old one to the new one: copy protected programs are a no go.

So moved the old one back to the livingroom tonight... sigh

And why the hell do we have three DVD players in the livingroom?!? Well, one is the 400 disk carousel (with no HDMI), one is a DVD recorder which isn't even hooked up (again, not HDMI), and the Blue Ray.

I think it is time for a tear-down and rebuild...

We're home from a wonderful - and much delayed - weekend away. This was SUPPOSED to be the trip we took at Thanksgiving. We almost didn't make it this time either. But, we went and breathed and played in snow, and cuddled with puglets and spent time with my Bro and SIL, and went exploring on mountain roads, and saw things I've never seen before - and one I don't want to see again.

The cats are happy, the house is here, and reality begins again tomorrow. And, oh what a reality it is. Boo.

I find farming to be a socially important topic to enforce. It's becoming more and more obvious that the level of abstraction between us and the source of our food has unintended and undesirable consequences. We need to continue SOME attempt to keep the idea that where our food comes from is a real, tangible place with life in the social milieu.

Don't know about your part of the world, but out here that are farms where you can kill and butcher your own cow.

Moonie, that's awful. Is there some place she can get off it and find an alternate route home???? When they closed the road, do they just make everybody sit there? That can't be right. They have to let her out, someplace.

From reading about other incidents people do indeed get stuck sleeping in their cars.

We keep earthquake kits in our cars. Do people with massive snow keep blizzard kits (with blankets and warm clothing?)

Yikes. I hope Mrs. Moonie gets home safely. My grandma always made us keep a blanket and water in our car for just such emergencies.

I suppose it's too late to put a plug in for the car emergency kit we bought at Costco several years back. $15, it included a ton of stuff, most relevantly an emergency blanket.

Thinking warm thoughts for Ms. Moonie :(

When I lived in cold, yes, we kept supplies in the car. Not a formal kit, but we had food and usually a bottle of water or something. Can't keep too much, because the water will freeze and crack the bottle, but we tried to keep something. And usually a space blanket or something, boots, extra gloves.

*sigh*

Well that was one for the record books. Mrs. Moonie was trapped in her car pretty much all night. She finally made it home about 5:30am. She did OK, she had a blanket and a hybrid car that let her idle more than the gas guzzlers around her.

Note to self: Upgrade "blizzard" kit to include large tin can.

It seems weird to think that soon, Kodak - the company that seems synonymous with film and photography - may no longer be in the film and photography business (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20110127/BUSINESS/101270338/1001/business).

I am in the printing business and they still have a huge presence here, particularly with their high-speed ink-jet technology (they have an ink-jet printing press as well as high-speed ink-jet heads for attaching on to web printing presses - we use this technology on some of our larger mailing projects). It just seems weird that they may no longer make film.
