So last night we saw a Production of Medea at the Orange County High School of the Arts. One of the participants from our Lucent workshop was in the show, so we wanted to show our support. It was a High School production, so still a bit rough around the edges, but none-the-less a rather sophisticated staging of iconic Greek tradgedy. They did a great job of integrating the chorus into the play (I'm always curious to see how chori are addressed in these stagings), using dance and choreography to add to their narrative commentary. It was great fun to see.

It was also fun to walk into a high school drama class - since both of us were Thespians in our past lives, it brought a bit of nostalgia to the mix - and perhaps even a bit of jealousy - I don't think any of the productions I was in reached this level of sophistication. It was also fun to meet our friend after her performance and congratulate her.

We also talked to her mom, who we also met at the Lucent workshop (though she didn't participate), and heard how the experience changed her daughter's life. This was her first show, she got in with the audition she worked on in the workshop and she turned her grades around so she could be in the show. It made me all the happier that we were there to show our support. (We of course encouraged her mom to take her to see some more lucent shows - like at Coachella, heh)

Afterwards, we did what we used to do anytime after a show - hit a local coffe shop, this time Hof's Hut where we chatted about Greek tragedy, Woody Allen, our high school theater experiences, and much more.

A great evening and it just made me feel Good.

Our little container garden is growing up a storm. It's so much fun to watch it all come alive. Our peas are growing so fast you can almost just sit there and see the little tendrils extending and curling around one another. Our poppies are blooming, as are the snapdragons and pansies. The parsley is going insane. Anyone want some parsley? The citrus trees are all blooming - a little late, but I'm still hopeful. The plant guy at the market had tomato and bean starts, so it must be about time to plant those as well. So crazy! I wouldn't even think of planting those until May back home.

Just bought some alyssum and some pansies to fill in the empty spaces in my front garden. I debated buying a second lavender, but I have a sneaking suspicion that, much like alyssum, it'll turn out to be a "spreading" plant. Am I correct in that guess?

I'm so glad I bought my new rose when I did. The garden center (at Wally World) has no roses now.

alphabassettgrrl
02-28-2009, 08:01 PM
Goonie, lavender generally forms a shrub type form. The alyssum will self-seed and fill the available space without crowding too much the rest of the plants. Alyssum is an annual, but mine haven't visibly died at all. They've bloomed forever, it seems.

I survived day two of my three-day mountain biking weekend. Yesterday was 19 miles, today was 9, and tomorrow will probably be in the mid-teens. It's good to be back on the bike. Now I need to get some road-riding in next week.

So here it is Saturday night and I'm home. I go dancing every Saturday night at PBDA but they're dark tonight. Normally I would go to Disneyland instead but I decided a night at home would be better than sitting and watching other people dance. The regulars at the park don't mix the way I'm used to at PBDA.

I got my dancing in last night though. I went to Atomic Ballroom in Irvine. I'm taking a class there and would like to be more of a regular there. I didn't dance a lot but I had a good time. I danced with one guy who was really good and I realized he was Shesha (yes, that's his name) who's won lots of swing competitions and also happens to be the owner of Atomic. It's so fun to dance with someone who's really good. They pay attention to you and make sure they're dancing to your level but also see how far they can push it. In other words they don't assume you only know the basics. It's such a refreshing change from some guys who are so into their own moves they don't notice their partner is barely keeping up.

So I'm not dancing tonight but I'm thinking about it.

Man, what a great weekend. We somehow accidentally ended up with no plans. Not that we don't love going out, seeing friends, visiting family (we do love it, which is why we always find ourselves booked), but our often full schedule makes these rare weekends feel like a luxurious treat. And we made the most of this one.

Got home from work Friday night and immediately got started prepping to paint the bathroom ceiling and the rebuilt closet. Went way better than expected, and we were putting primer on the walls by 7PM. By 9, primer coat was done, leaving the rest of the evening for...whatever.

Slept in a little on Saturday (well, stayed in bed, not so much sleeping), quick home depot run for paint, and by 3PM had the day's painting done. That left just some touch up in the bathroom to be done Sunday. On top of that, we began what will hopefully end up being a total reorganization of the house, beginning with the bedroom and the garage.

Through it all, we'd been watching Top Chef. We missed the season, but spotted the marathon that was airing Wednesday before the finale*, so we had the whole season queued up on TiVo. We'd work for a while, take a break to watch a couple episodes, work some more.

Feeling like we needed to reward ourselves for a job well done, and craving some top notch dining after the Top Chef glut, we treated ourselves to dinner at Marché Moderne (http://www.marchemoderne.net/). Definitely one of the finer meals of our lives. This is going to sound weird, but the standout dish, among the several astonishingly good things we ate, was the coriander pickled carrots. That's right, pickled carrots. True cullinary genius can be found in the simplest of dishes. And that is in no way meant to denegrate the rest of the meal.

Living the good life.

* Regarding Top Chef - so glad Stephan lost. He seems like a good chef, but what a prick! I wish Carla had said no to Casey's suggestions. F*ck Casey for talknig Carla into doing stuff she wasn't comfortable with, but Carla, what were you thinking? I thought you'd figured out to screw the pressure to overreach and just do what you do well! A shame. But I'm okay with Hosea winning. And now I want to go to Moorpark and try Cafe Firenze.

I am cleaning out my closet. I've taken out all of the clothes I haven't worn in quite a while - unless they're black - and putting them on the bed to try on. Many of my clothes no longer fit me, so into the donate pile they will go. I'm sure that will leave MANY holes in my wardrobe, however.

What I find difficult is that I have 2 very DIFFERENT types of clothing I wear. Either my clothes are super casual and weather-versatile or they are fun and arty stuff. There isn't much cross-over between the two.

A larger closet would be nice. ;)

Top tax bracket at one point was 90-something percent. I don't remember when, but it used to be high.

Alex
03-03-2009, 11:53 PM
The record top marginal tax rate was 94% at the end of World War II. In fact for most of the history of the income tax until Reagan the top rates were 70% or above.

But you have to keep in mind that those top tax rates applied to very few people compared to now.

In 1941, for example, the top marginal rate was 81% but that was only on income above $5,000,000.

In 1945, it went up and was broadened. 94% on income above $200,000.

However, in inflation adjusted dollars, that 1941 would be on income above $69.7 million, I doubt that applied to even a few dozen people at the time. Even the $200,000 adjusts so $2.3 million a year.

By contrast, the current max rate of 35% applies to everything over $357,700*. Still definitely the cream of the crop but hardly the extreme far end of the curve.

Anyway, my point being that everybody likes throwing around the top marginal rate but that is pretty irrelevant without knowing how many people it affects. Obama could outrage Republicans by advocating a 100% marginal rate on incomes over $1.3 trillion.

*All of these numbers are for married filing jointly.

So today I learned about the awesomeness that is manzanita branches. We found this place near the LA Flower Market where this guy makes freaking amazing centerpieces with them. Literally cements the branch onto a wood base, then glues flowers, moss, hangs crystals, etc. on it. I guess it's all the rage in decorator circles. I haven't found anything online that even touches this guy's work though.

Oh, and the fabric sellers in the fabric district must be getting hungry. I mean, they never lacked for assertiveness, but these days you just wouldn't believe how aggressively they try to sell you cloth! Quite unpleasant, actually.

She's very close to her Gram Trudy, so we're fine on that front. It's just really weird- my mom was a total hypochondriac all my life, so I thought for sure she'd outlive us all. Don't know the cause of death yet, but I suspect she over medicated herself and let her blood sugar (she was a very fragile diabetic and prescription pill addict) drop too low. The sheriff said that it looked like she passed on in her sleep, but we'll know more after the autopsy. We were just this month trying to move her into an assisted living facility, but I guess that's not a problem anymore. Anyway, thanks to all of you- I appreciate it.

I'm sure there was some good stuff in there as well, but you had to get through all of the crap to find it. My SIL and her daughters came down one weekend and sorted stuff and gone someone who re-sells crap to come pick it all up. Every once in a while I'll miss something and wish I had thought about it 10 years ago, but .......oh well. As it was, I got too much crap, some of which I'm still hauling around. Anyone need a piano?

My sister is taking the piano. I'm trying to sort through and weed out the good crap. There is some. My grandmother owned the house originally (1950) and conveniently sold it to my parents with all the crap intact. So we've got 4 generations of peoples crap in there.

My grandparents, two of my great grandmothers lived with them before they died, my dad's family stuff when his mom died, my parents, my aunt, my sister, myself and my mom inherited everything from her great uncle. It's mind boggling.

I've been to Katie's Mom's house and I can tell you that the photo diary doesn't do the sheer amount of crapola justice.

The basement is what got me. It is almost paralyzing. I haven't a clue how they'll get through all of the stuff.

That gave me the willies. :shudder:It is not as bad as I was originally told, but still horrific.

Basically, only the skin from the back of is hand was peeled off.

Still makes me queasy.

In completely separate news, I just installed a 500 GB drive and 4 GB of RAM in Susan's new notebook (http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB881LL/A?mco=MzE2NjMyOA). I am currently installing the OS on the new drive and then will start installing apps next.

By buying the drive (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=506) and RAM (http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack=http://www.valueram.com&ktcpartno=KTA-MB667K2/4G) from Fry's and installing myself, I not only saved over $100, I also got a bigger HD (the largest available from Apple is 320 GB.

If anyone is interested in a 120 GB SATA 2.5" drive, let me know. Never used.

Is it a laptop drive? It is a laptop drive, but it is SATA. Check to make sure the G4 is SATA

According to Apple, your G4 uses an Ultra ATA 100 drive. I am not sure if this is the same as an SATA

I blame today on the Lashpair:*
http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/wendybeth/th_SNC00054.jpg

Loads of snow, and a crappy drive out to my mom's place, where we discovered she'd pulled one last crappy evil act before departing. More details later, but suffice to say grief has been replaced by intense anger and relief that I NEVER have to deal with her again. My mother was truly insane- how we turned out, I'll never know. I feel a very long LJ post coming on.

I'm nursing my foot again.

I didn't take good care of last week's sprain, and attempted to dance on it last night. It's a tad pissed at me. (I'm just too damned determined to not let anything stop me.)

So, I'm definitely staying completely off of it as much as possible for the next few days, and using ice.

When it heals a bit, may I recommend some mid-week (as in middle of the week between dance classes) heel lifts to help strengthen the muscles? It's not from that... it's the high impact of the repeated jumps on the ball of my foot. We don't have to do the jumps - only the releves, but, of course, I like to challenge myself. However, even though my spirit/will says "Yes", my body is saying "No".

I'm going to order some jazz sneakers, since they have shock absorption unlike my regular dance shoes. It should help greatly until some more weight comes off. In this case, weight really does matter.

Yeah, I am using CS2 version (Mac) of Photoshop. Any time I needed to do any animation, I just went to ImageReady - stuff ports over nicely.

I wonder if the platform has anything to do with it: I know DP is on a Mac, and I am pretty sure GD is on a PC. I am not sure about Snowy or Morri.
