I'm thinking of trying working at the Library near my house. Even if I don't get paid or have to volunteer, I would love to work there. Plus, it's quiet so I can hear a lot better and spent a lot of time at the place. Might go there this week and ask about it.

So, the kitty crazy train is rolling through our home right now. And, poor Mufasa has taken refuge inside the recliner. We'll coax him out after dinner.

Anyway, the boy is well. After his examination, it was determined that he's actually 4 years old, and was previously neutered (I didn't really personally look before) according to his impound chart. So, he was a pet to someone fairly careless or something.

On the way home, I took him in his carrier to Petco to get a collar. I also bought a small harness and leash, and he let me put it on him in the car. So, anchored to the seatbelt, he got to ride with a little bit of freedom the rest of the way home. :) I plan on working on him with the harness over the next few weeks to see if he'll take to it, so he can join me on some walks.

Maleficent and Magick are totally cool with him, albeit cautious and curious. Emmy, on the other hand, makes a REALLY bad ambassador. Hence, why he's inside the recliner.

Pics will be forthcoming once everyone is settled and chilled. :)

I think he loves it here. :) He's now exploring, eating, and drinking. He also took some treats from me, and just spent some time in the window sill, purring. :D

Then again, we closed the others in the bedroom for a little while, at least so he can get his bearings.

Last night our cat Lillian passed away.

Even those of you who have been to our home several times might not have met Lily, but if you did you met one of the sweetest, gentlest souls you will ever find.

She is survived by her sister Dorothy, and two grieving parents.

I'm so sorry, WB. :(

Now that you mention it, you're right, it has been a tough year for the LoT pets. Our girl Pigeon (the tiny gray kitten we found in October of last year) escaped through an open window about 8 weeks ago. She squeezed herself between the screen and the window sill. I hadn't said anything because I felt so guilty about it. And we kept hoping she'd come back. We miss her terribly.

Aw hell.

Picked up our some-assembly-required crib and changing table/dresser today. I've nearly put the dresser together (very easy, took about an hour), but the 2nd to last piece seems to be cut wrong (either that, or every single other piece is cut wrong) so it will have to remain unfinished until we receive a replacement :(

JWBear

Ghoulish Delight

It would actually be very simple to make the piece fit with one cut on another piece, but the piece in question not only doesn't fit but it's damaged. And I can't just make a piece from scratch as I can't match the stain. So replacement piece is the only real option.

Assuming that the one on Style was The Dish, that's an official spinoff of The Soup. Other official spinoffs are Sports Soup on Versus and Web Soup on G4. To the limited extent I've seen those I haven't cared for them.

Was the one on Comedy Central tosh.0? If so that's not an official spinoff but I've actually liked it more than any of the others (with The Soup still miles ahead).

Cool. I had no idea The Soup had spinoffs. I still pledge my allegiance to Joel McHale. (And understand that I'm not really ticked, it's just a lighthearted observation peppered with fake outrage that preaches my undying love for the host of The Soup.)
I watched tosh.0 last night because the YouTube redemption segment. I thought that was a really interesting idea. You never hear what happens to a lot of these people. I've been curious. I think that is a good idea to follow up with them, get their reactions about their 'fame' and even get a chance to redeem themselves by doing the action that they f'ed up again successfully this time.

Hmmm. Is cheese bad for dogs? If not, you could always come up with a smaller variety just for pets. ;)

From Pet Food Report (http://www.petfoodreport.com/newquestions.htm#cheese):
Question
I have heard cheese is bad for dogs and cats, is this true?

Answer
Cheese is a nutritious ingredient for pets, as it is for people and is used in a variety of pet foods and treats. Cheese provides excellent quality protein, calcium, Vitamin A, and essential fatty acids. B-complex vitamins are contained in some cheeses. Pets also like the taste of cheese and it can be a part of a complete and balanced pet food diet. However, pets should not be fed cheese from table scraps, which could contain too much fat and salt.

BTW, The parmesans are very low in fat, 3 grams.

Apparently, Mufasa was an indoor/outdoor kitty before... he's now got his energy and "routine" back in order, so he slept all day yesterday, only to stay up all last night, wanting to go outside.

Of course, that's not going to happen. Although, his desire might help in leash training him, like I want to try.

But, he had to jump in every single window last night, jumping through anything in his way, and then continuously trying to slide them open, and when we got up to pick up whatever he threw to the ground, he'd run to the door and whine at us.

In no way did that abomination deserve to be called "pumpkin pie".

To explain that little inside joke to anybody who cares:

Birthday food was the bane of our cruise a couple weeks ago. Early in the week it was the birthday of one member of our party, and even though the request was made in the same timely manner as in the past, they were unable to fulfill a request for a key lime pie (though the next night they were overly proud of delivering some left-over key lime cheesecake squares from the late night snack trays).

So with that in mind several days ahead of Lani's birthday night I asked if it would be possible to get a pumpkin pie at the last dinner of the cruise. Lead waiter said he'd inquire. Next night said it wasn't a problem. Night after that again confirmed it.

Dinner night rolls around and they give us our dessert menus and I'm starting to think they just forgot about it when out comes our waiter with some kind of cake. "Pumpkin" cake. I use quotes because this was a three layer cake with something vaguely pumpkin flavored in the frosting.

It was not good.

I like eggnog AND pumpkin. Pumpkin soup gets a yes from me, as does pumpkin pie (with the crust cut off), pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice lattes, putting pumpkin pie spice in my hot chocolate and... well, you get the picture! But I do agree that eggnog alone can get to be too much very quickly. The light eggnogs help with this problem, interestingly enough.

Tigger used to escape and hide under the lemon tree in my parents back yard.

Springer once knocked out a screen and was "missing" for a few hours before I noticed. By "missing" I mean my parents had no clue he had gotten out and I heard him meowing outside.

Yay, Mufasa is back. :)

Deebs ~ When did Pigeon go missing? Recently? Oy. :(

I think my post about her escape (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showpost.php?p=306231&postcount=5023) kinda got lost in between the loss of Lilly, Haggis, and other kitty talk.

Poor Pigeon. :(

What is it with wanderlust in some kitties? :(

Now they spend all their time out on the porch--screened in, roofed over, but still "outside"--and seem pretty happy.

Disneyphile, I'm really glad Mufasa came back! Deebs, I'm sorry Pigeon hasn't.

Thanks, you guys. I should have known not to leave the window open. But I kind of thought she was satisfied just sitting on that window sill, breathing the fresh air. I had no idea she was plotting to flatten herself for her escape. She must have been scared, she had never been an outdoor girl. I like to believe someone kept her, though they would have had to lure her with food because she is shy with new people. But she was very affectionate and cuddly with us.

1310 new posts.

Florida was great - got to visit my grandpa, do quite poorly at MouseAdventure, have an amazing dinner at Victoria and Albert's, and walk walk walk until I could walk no more. Oh- also had my first ever visit to a water park. Surprise: Didn't hate it! Bigger surprise: Loved the enclosed slide the best!

Tons of photos and video to wade through. And those 1310 new posts.

And big hugs to those with kitty-related sadness.

I'm glad Mufasa came back! I go and work 12 hours and miss all of the drama! I'm sorry about Pigeon. It is horrible when one loses a pet and you don't know where they've gone or what become of them.

Jack got out the other night at 3 am. Thurston woke up and had to pee and, as we were coming inside, Jack ran out. I was lucky I even saw the bad man! It was pitch black outside and I went running through the spider webs and overgrown vines to grab his big orange butt. He used to be an outside cat, but he also used to chase cars. Bad, bad kitties!

Last night, we had the joy of discovering that Mufasa is really smart - smart enough to turn doorknobs and open doors. (And had no problem reaching them either.) Thankfully, the deadbolt is too far out of his reach. And, this was still after we put him on the leash just an hour prior, let him step onto the porch with us and he almost immediately pawed at the front door, wanting back in. I think we're taking longer to adjust than he is.

We had a situation in our neighborhood last night. Our next door neighbor is a single mother with an 11 year old daughter. The mother was out at a meeting last evening; the daughter was home by herself. About 7:00, a man came to their door. The daughter opened the inner door (they have one of those heavy security screen doors). The man asked her if her parents were home. She said “no”. He then asked her to open the security door because he couldn’t see her very well. She told him “no”, and shut the door.

Shortly afterwards, the mother came home and saw a man standing in their front yard. As soon as he saw her, he took off running. A little later, she happened to look out a window that overlooked our driveway (which is between our house and hers) and saw someone standing there in the shadows.

She called the police and asked a friend to come over. The friend came to our house later to fill us in on what happened. We talked to some of the other neighbors to let them know to be on the look out.

Scary.

I remember my first Naugles experience. I was 16 years old (there were no Naugles on the East Coast), and a couple of my friends brought me to their "favorite" fast food place. We ordered burritos and grabbed lots of hot sauce - the sauce came in containers similar the McDonald's McNugget sauce. We dumped all the hot sauce into our burritos, save one, which we opened and left on the table. Before we dug in, my friend dropped the dirtiest penny he had into the last sauce container. When we were done eating, he pulled out the penny, and it was absolutely shiny and clean.

"Imagine what that sht's doing to your stomach right now," he said.

Ah, youth.

Deebs

Ha! I remember the hot sauce being in those containers. Eating in one time, with my friends, I flipped one over by flicking it on its edge. Repeatedly. Seeing how many times it would land right side up. One flip too many and it actually opened, splattering hot sauce in my eye. Ah, youth indeed. And thinking about what you just said, it's a wonder I still have my vision.

One thing about In N Out french fries: they are not made consistently from store-to-store. Some locations make them better than others.

Gn2Dlnd
11-21-2009, 01:50 PM
Here's the thing about fries, if you cut the potato and fry it immediately in very hot oil, you get In-n-Out style fries. Sort of a papery skin, a little dry, so salt doesn't adhere. If the oil is less hot, you get a stickier fried potato, not at all a french fry consistency. If you cut your potatoes and let them soak in water overnight, starch leaches out of them, creating a coating that gives you that super-crisp consistency you find at McDonald's. If you cheat, i.e. Carl's Jr. waffle fries, you can "bread" your fries, and get the same crispy outsides, but the insides are usually a little mushy.

There are very few fries I don't like. I hate cold or reheated fries, and Steak fries and Suzie-q's are too thick to get crisp enough for me.

When I order fries, rarely, because of the carbs and all, I'll usually ask for them extra crispy, with a side of mayo for dipping.

I'm late with this maybe, but...

watching Leno the other night they had a guy from the Twilight series. Ross the intern was outside @ City Walk {I think} letting girls ask the guy from Twilight questions. The last question he saved for himself. He said

'In the movie {or a movie} you were attacked by a bear. Have you ever been attacked by a bear in real life?'

to which the actor said, pretty much without missing a beat

'No, there are always a lot of cougars to scare them away.' {or something like that}.

Now, I just barely learned what the heck that all meant and I almost fell over laughing. No one played up on his comment but Ross laughed as he knew what it meant.

We were looking at (read: not buying) furniture this weekend at Buttercup on Venice and decided to go into "Father's Office" for a quick bite. It's called a "gastropub", which means that they have many alcohol options and a small but interesting food menu. They make it clear on the menu that their policy is to not make any changes whatsoever to the recipes of the offered dishes, and even though I'm not a fan of certain cheeses, they stuck by their policy, which I took to be pretty douchey. However, I can say without any reservation, that the "Office Burger," as it appears immutable on their menu, is one of the best hamburgers I have ever tasted.

Maddies's school district did clinics at 4 schools this weekend and each school only had 1000 doses. I'm not sure how many kids are in the district but it's more than 4000. fvck. I ordered 3 new HP notebook computers and 3 HP portable printers. Out of those, 1 of each arrived broken and HP will not rush me either one. 5-7 business days which - with the holiday - meant the end of next week or even beginning of week after.

They suck.

I used to love HP. Good products with great customer service and they stood behind what they made. Now they have crappy to mediocre customer service, crappy quality if 2 of 6 items arrive broken and really don't care what time frame their customers have.

I have 3 people on Monday coming for training and only 2 will have setups.

Thanks HP for making my life more complicated than necessary and for giving me an F.U. when you could have made it right. (by shipping me out new items that would arrive by Monday.)

Huh. Yep. We'er all still here.

Cancel one more end of world scenario (http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2009/11/large-hadron-collider-starts-up-produces-first-collisions.ars).

Looks like we can rest easy for the next 1,122 days.... (http://www.bautforum.com/conspiracy-theories/63449-whole-2012-poles-flip-nonsense.html#post1049386)

Well, not quite yet. These collisions were not the extremely high energy ones that scare certain witless people.

Though if I were running LHC I think I'd schedule the first of those for 12/21 next year just to really **** with people's minds.

I am not thrilled about this because I don't understand how it works/won't end the world. If someone wants to explain it I'll probably no longer be one of those witless people. :(

If the LHC succeeds in what the theory predicts, the collisions will produce energies that approach the energy of a blackhole. Except on a scale that's sub-atomic, and for a duration that's less than a blink of an eye. There is no danger of anything that small, of that little duration, doing any damage to anything.

Alex

How it won't end the world?

The most credible fears about the LHC expressed by doomsday worriers is that it will create extremely small black holes (which would that then grow out of control and destroy the planet and/or solar system). Another possibly is that it will create a new form of matter (that then "infects" all of the existing matter it touches destroying the planet).

The first reason not to worry is that those who fear these things are only paying attention to half of the theories. The same theories that predict these things could be created also predict that they will almost instanteously evaporate before they could possible do any damage. So it is cherry picking to believe the theories enough to worry but not enough to stop worrying.

The second reason to not worry is that the Large Hadron Collider is not doing anything new. The type of particle collisions they are looking to create don't happen on earth normally but that is only because they happen in the upper atmosphere instead. And on the surface of the moon. And on the surface of Mercury. And on the surface of various moons without atmospheres. And in the upper atmospheres of all the other planets. So, we're not creating anything new, we're just creating it where it is easier to observe. Observing particle collisions in the upper atmosphere (the closest place they happen) would be like trying to take detailed statistics on a single shooting star while standing in downtown Los Angeles and wearing sunglasses. So we do it down here where we know the exact location and time of the collission and can surround it with billions of dollars of detectors and computers. But it still isn't anything new. These collissions have been happening here in Earth's atmosphere for billions of years in a volume greater than anything the LHC will ever do and they haven't destroyed the planet yet.

To a degree it is like saying a leaf falling from an tree indoors could cause a concussion and so trees should never be allowed inside. Sure, I could make up a scenario where that happens but it is essentially fiction and the same thing happens (falling leaves) outside all of the time. Being indoors doesn't make it any riskier.

We slept late this morning and now I'm trying to get up the energy to go for a bike ride to burn off the calories I ate yesterday.

I just got up! Now, since yesterday I ate elsewhere and didn't get to make my own complete feast, I am about to start on pie, then turkey. Plus stuffing and dressing, brussels sprouts w/bacon, cranberry relish, creamed onions, and whatever else I can rustle up.

I would have gone shopping this morning, but no $$. I like to just wander around stores (Target & Michaels) just to people watch. I have everything I need already planned out, but I still need some stocking stuffer type things.

We had considered going to IKEA for a bench/shoe storage unit but the "limited quantities" sold out almost immediately (we called before leaving). We might hit Trader Joe's but have no other shopping plans.

Yeah, not economically stimulating, that's me.

We hit Target this morning. There was nothing that we were all excited about but Madz and I go every year and it's fun watching everyone get crazy. We hit the mall after that but we were home back in bed by 6:30. For us it's more something that we do together than really buying anything.

I picked up a toy for my nephew (I was told the other day that he's into Bakugan, so I got him Bakugan, whatever the hell that is) for $10, a 4-gig chip for my camera for $10, Balderdash (bet you can't guess how much...), a travel version of Apples to Apples, and some fuzzy jammie bottoms for Alex for $5. Not for Christmas, just because the dog keeps making holes in his PJs. He's actually wearing them now, so I guess I did good ;)

An hour into the sale, Target still had the big TVs in stock, cameras, portable DVD players, etc.

They did a really good job preparing for today, at least my local one did. They spread out the doorbuster items around the store, rather than concentrating in their usual department (Electronics was mobbed anyway because of the smaller stuff like DVDs that were on sale). So like the TVs were actually over in Women's clothing, some of the toys were in Kids' clothing, etc. And they handed out a map to everyone in line (and a reusable shopping bag!) that showed you where those items were located. I think that did a lot to keep the shopping cart traffic to a low roar. When the doors opened, everyone walked in peacefully, no stampeding or arguing. For checkout, they had a remote queue set up that everyone got into, and a lady directing people from the queue to open registers, so the queue, though long, went very quickly. One more quick line to get out (receipt checking ala Costco).

Now, the Target I went to has the advantage of being rather hidden in my neighborhood (high on a hill off a non-freeway reaching street) and surrounded by 3 other locations within a 3-mile radius. So I don't know if they all had it that good or if I just made a good choice going with that one instead of one of the ones in a big shopping center.

I had an interesting day. This morning we went to WinCo near our new place and I'm once again surprised at the great prices. They had turkeys for $2.00! Wow! I bought 2. I'll roast one tomorrow and keep one frozen for later.

Got home and the hot water doesn't seem very hot. I'm thinking - oh great - the propane tank at this place didn't have much in it. They are coming to refill on Monday or Tuesday but I guess it didn't last. F! F! F! Call them to see if they can come sooner but no.

Took Amy to the mall in Hemet and it was tolerable. Picked up a few things.

Got home and the power was out. So - no hot water - no heat and now no power. Which also means no phone and internet. Hours later and still nothing. We drive down the hill to the local pay phone because, of course, this is the weekend I accidently leave my cell at work and even if I hadn't, I don't get a signal at home anyway.

Finally see some so cal edison trucks down the way a bit and an hour or so later we have electricity.

It's while I'm making dinner that I wonder if maybe the pilot light blew out. Sure enough - light it and we are on our way to hot water! Yay!

We don't know what happened exactly. I wasn't home and Chris was in the kitchen. There was playing and chasing going on. He probably was tearing through the house, slip on the floor and slammed himself into a wall (or something like that). Our vet said "big guys fall hard". I guess so!

Wow. As of right now, the only thing my system can reach on the network is LoT. That includes other systems within our lab network. :D :D :D

Something must be wrong with our DNS or gateway server, but since I was just on the LoT, the route is cached on my local machine, so it can still get here. But nowhere else. Aw shucks.
