Yeah, that's definitely a huge minus but luckily it's near the Ala Moana end of Waikiki and more manageable than dead center.

Then you write a treatment ŕ la Aaron Spelling Productions.

And now for something completely different: no flu vaccine around here. They're out! No more coming in until mid-Novemberish.

I snagged my shot at my allergist's office. I would like to also get an H1N1, but they're still not available yet.

Our Walgreen's was advertising the shot on a walk-in basis. In reality, only one of the pharmacists was giving shots and she isn't there all that much. Then they ran out of the stuff, like everyone else. Oh, well.

And speaking of sickness and pain, let me tell you about our braindead local newspaper. Example headline from today: "Woman Gets X Years for Alleged Murder Plot". Um, alleged?

BarTopDancer

They run out of flu shots every year. I'm not sure why people are surprised that H1N1 ran out too.

I'm sure it couldn't be related to the media/government hyping that there would be enough to go around.

Ghoulish Delight
10-22-2009, 01:10 PM
H1N1 hasn't run out. H1N1 vaccine has only been distributed to the highest risk categories of people (mainly health workers). Larger scale roll out of H1N1 vaccine has yet to come.

Info, as it were, from the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/public/vaccination_qa_pub.htm)

It is expected that there will be enough 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine for anyone who chooses to get vaccinated. The US federal government has procured 250 million doses of 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine. This quantity of vaccine accounts for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical trial data showing that children 6 months to 9 years of age will need two doses and persons 10 and older will need one dose. Limited amounts of 2009 H1N1 vaccine became available in early October, and more will continue to become available over the upcoming weeks.

Ghoulish Delight
10-22-2009, 01:15 PM
Incidentally, because of the urgency to produce H1N1, the general flu vaccine will probably be in slightly scarcer supply than ever since some production resources are being switched over.

I need 720 channels.

Generally, new shows start every 30min. On average it takes me 2.5 seconds/station to channel surf. So with 720 channels, if nothing is on, by the time I channel surf through to figure that out I can start over again knowing there must be at some new shows on.

Sooooo.....I'm taking a mini-vacation to San Francisco this weekend! Flying up Saturday morning, and back to L.A. on Monday morning. This is the sort of thing I'd like to do more, but hardly ever have. I hope it becomes a trend. If any Bay area LoTters would like to meet for lunch or Disney Family Museum or cable car riding, I'm a tourist with a wide open itinerary. Any shows I should see? Any shows I shouldn't? Restaurants? Any suggestions are welcome. I'll probably try to do the WD Museum on Sunday, going to attempt to book my ticket for 11 am.

I juuust about have an old spinning wheel up and running. It came to Minnesota from Sweden with the hubbo's great-grandmother in 1882. It hasn't seen action since 1905.

This afternoon, we drove to a nearby little town and bought some roving, which is wool cleaned, carded, and ready to be spun. This roving is also dyed (blues and greens).

Where has the wheel been stored for 100 years?? Would love to see a photo.

It's been in various basements. We've had it in our basement for as long as we've lived in this house, which is since 1991. It's wood with iron and leather.

Sadly, one of Tom's sisters "antiqued" it about 40 years ago. Before that it was Swedish blue (surprise!). Now, it's turquoise. It's a total coincidence that it matches our fireplace. Really.

One of the things I did to get it up and running, I devised a belt around the wheel to the spindle. (Prepare to faint in the presence of my high tech genius.) The belt is made of butcher's twine, which turns out to be a really good choice.

So hubby and I volunteered today, helping out with a mountain biking festival. Good for free admission, free parking, free lunch, and a free t-shirt. Used to include free beer, but I guess some idiot did something stupid and now the whole park area prohibits booze. This festival generally doesn't have much of a problem with drunks- they limit the beers to 2 per person, but they have to stay within the rules of the park.

Two of the women in our group won prizes in the raffle- both won bikes. Nice. I would have liked to do more bike riding, but we were assigned to a station along the Poker Run, and which was very close to the trailhead. I guess we could have gone along the route, and taken the long way back, but I don't know my way aroung.

I was reminded that women who bike look great. :)

With apologies to my marvelous wife/mother of my child-in-utero, I can't resist relating this anecdote from the weekend.

I think it's fair to say that the relationship between me and CP defies most stereotypes. In particular, it's very rare for us to fall into the kind of dumb "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus," male vs. female stupidity. Not unheard of, but rare. This weekend was one of those rare occasions where CP said something that was straight out of a script for some awful Thursday night sitcom.

GD: Ugh, how frustrating. I'm going to spending my Sunday in the garage building shelves. We've got this little 13" TV that I could watch football on while I work, except for the fact that the government shut down analog broadcasts and we don't have a digital converter.

CP: Well, you wouldn't really want that anyway, right? I mean, the TV would just distract you.

Yesterday sent out Masquerade Party reminder with YouTube links to movies with Masquerade scenes. The only movie represented “twice” was two versions of “Romeo and Juliet.” Today, my roommate finally finds and buys a replacement he likes for sunglasses he’s had for 8 years, were badly damaged and finally went missing last week. The replacement model sunglasses are the “Juliet.” It replaces the 8-year old “Romeos.” The jacket I’m wearing for my Masquerade costume was worn by Capulet in a production of Romeo and Juliet. It was a production by the Los Angeles Opera. A famous musical number in Phantom of the Opera is “Masquerade,” sent out as one of the YouTube links in the Masquerade Party reminder yesterday.’

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b268/braddoc310/shesdeadjim.gif

What's creepy about this pic is that if you blur your eyes, it kind of looks like a skeletal face... maybe even Michael Jackson's face. My head and Chris's head are the eyes, the branches are a hollowed out nose, our shirts are hair...

Creeeeepy!

There is an archaeologist doing work on legend tripping, specifically with regard to vampire legends in New England cemeteries. He's interested in any grave offerings you might leave and how you place them. Did I just blow his cover? Nope, he's been giving presentations about this project.

Word to the wise: if you're planning on paying your respects to any New England buried vampires, watch for this guy's motion-activated night cameras.

Ok: so, there's a law clerk opening in my #1 preferred location (other than here). (hint: I'd be an east coaster, but not at all bitter....) Two openings. Listed in the OTHER, less obvious clerk listing place. And she's making one more administrative, so specifically says to highlight such experience as it will make one more competitive.

Now, I'd rather have the LESS admin position, and sometimes posting in the other, less obvious place means that they already have a candidate and are just going through the formalities, but if there's a real opening, a foot in the door is a foot in the door and I'd take it in a heart beat.

Here's a nice thing: I hauled up the big plastic box of Halloween doodads from the basement to begin decorating. You know, stiff upper lip and the show must go on and all that. Today has been a great day for me!

First, I managed to trade tomorrow's shift to a day shift, leaving me free for Halloween festivities (even if it means working in the box at 8:30am).

Then, I headed out to get a mask, and every single place I went, I scored rock star parking. I'm so not kidding about this, at least 4 times! Found my mask, and a headpiece instead of the more expensive hat I was thinking about getting, thus saving me $$$.

Now I'm enjoying a pumpkin Frappuccino while waiting for my honey to come home so we can head off to Halloween karaoke at Azteca. Oh, also figured out a very easy costume for tonight that will be comfortable yet still costumey (hint: from last New Year's Eve). That is, if I don't change my mind at the last minute and go as Liza Minelli. I think I'd need a short wig to pull that one off though. Otherwise I'd just look like a woman that dresses twice her age.

Sometimes it's the little things that can make or break a day. Getting my shift changed was a big good thing, but everything else was small stuff that added up to a very happy me. It's amazing how much good parking can influence your mood...

From DreamMoods Dream Dictionary (http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/c2.htm):

Cat

To see a cat in your dream, symbolizes an independent spirit, feminine sexuality, creativity, and power. It also represents misfortune and bad luck. The cat could indicate that someone is being deceitful or treacherous toward you. If the cat is aggressive, then it suggests that you are having problems with the feminine aspect of yourself. The dream may be a metaphor for "cattiness" or someone who is "catty" and malicious. If you see a cat with no tail, then it signifies a loss of independence and lack of autonomy.

To dream that a cat is biting you, symbolizes the devouring female. Perhaps you are taking and taking without giving. You may be expressing some fear or frustration especially when something is not going as planned.

To see a black cat in your dream, indicates that you are experiencing some fear in using your psychic abilities and believing in your intuition. You may erroneously associate the black cat with evil, destruction, and bad luck. If you see a white cat, then it denotes difficult times.

To dream that a cat killed a spider, suggests that you are expressing your femininity in a seductive and cunning manner rather than in an overtly and almost destructive way.

I'd love to see more pics from there! Did you visit the cloud forest?

No on the cloud forest. The rainy season is ramping up down there (and as it turned out we got some of the spinoff from Ida) and because of it being combined with the cruise our packing had to meet three basic requirements:

1. Cruise appropriate.
2. Jungle appropriate.
3. Less than 25 pounds total luggage each since that was the limit for one of the charter flights we'd be taking.

So we decided to stick to the coasts and minimize the need to either pack enough clothes for getting constantly soaked or enough gear to prevent getting constantly soaked. So we stuck to the coasts. First the Caribbean coast to visit Tortuguero and watch green sea turtles hatch. Then hopped over the Pacific coast near Quepos/Manuel Antonio for a couple more laid back days.

Some more pictures:

First, one set from the Disney cruise.

This is what it looks like to view the front landing gear of a 747 from about 30 feet directly beneath it.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2759/4087395097_b0b91f1cde.jpg

This is from the boat's stop at St. Martin. There isn't much room for an airport and the landing strip for it starts literally 100 off a public beach. Most of the planes that come in are smaller but they get a couple 747's a day from Europe and we were well timed in our 15 minute stop on a cabbed round-the-island tour.

Here's a shot of that same plane a little bit farther out.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2797/4088153082_c8e95bf04a.jpg

Now from Costa Rica.

A very large beetle used as a prop by a guy selling young coconuts outside a Del Monte banana processing plant on the way to our boat for getting to Tortugeuro (boat or plane is the only way to get there).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2681/4088153738_e143c0448b.jpg

Our main reason for going to Tortuguero was to see the sea turtles (a surprise bonus was had on the cruise when a sea turle surfaces for air just a couple feet from me while snorkeling during our St. Thomas stop). They're significant to Lani and me for several reasons so we were really looking forward to seeing them. Unfortunately, the nesting season is pretty much over by the end of October so instead we had to settle for trying to catch a nest hatching (much lower certainty of successful timing). So it was a huge bonus to go out on that quest and come across a turtle laying her eggs a couple weeks late.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/4088155062_9025c1d9d5.jpg

We escorted her back to the sea and then it was on to find the baby turtles.

Fortunately we were successful here as well. Here, the 150 or so eggs have all hatched but the turtles are still lethargic in the nest. They'll slowly get more active and finish breaking down the walls (the hole here is there doing, not ours) and make their break for the sea (much assisted by our presence keeping birds and other hunters away).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2554/4087398537_2ddd94d8a5.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2635/4088154428_72590d0579.jpg

After about 45 minutes of observation they were on their way.

I escorted this one all the way to his successful entry into the ocean. I'll assume he is one of the very few that survived more than a little while in the ocean without falling prey to some aquatic predator.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2585/4088157786_36551cd1ec.jpg

Enough of turtles (though I could have happily spent all day walking them to from nest to ocean).

Also in the Torteguero area we saw (among many things I didn't get even mediocre photos of)

1. Enough red poison tree frogs to arm an ancient Indiana Jones treasure booby trap.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2638/4087400379_87c10bff67.jpg

2. Leafcutter ants

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/4088158576_1c7dc8dc70.jpg

3. A troop of howler monkeys (not the best photo I took of them but used because of baby presence).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/4087401199_da6072f396.jpg

4. Tree-climbing iguanas (these last two photos show how much trouble I had with lens fogging due to rain and humidity).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4087402713_157ac1c9be.jpg

5. A surprisingly human looking three-toed sloth

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2723/4088160292_0491b4bd2b.jpg

6. And, of course, lots of jungle

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2673/4088159582_73757107b9.jpg

We then hopped over to the Pacific coast on this, our new personal best for smallest airplane used. Soon we'll have to fly our own to get any smaller. When you're flying through clouds in one of these, you do find yourself wondering just how well the pilot knows where Costa Rica's 100+ volcanic peaks are.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2536/4088161512_0e44329147.jpg

On that coast we saw

1. A tiger-face crab while out in the mangrove swamp. Saw hundreds of land crabs out there but this species really stuck out.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2461/4088166050_d95c00b97c.jpg

2. A juvenile boa constricter resting in a tree. I was really hoping for some good snake sightings but this turned out to be the only one we saw all week. Closest thing to a disappointment on the trip.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2787/4088165288_15de795185.jpg

3. Lots of "regular beach, not land" crabs at the beach.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2798/4088167870_efab7a02b1.jpg

4. Essentially our own private beach since we seemed to be the only guests in our section of the hotel (Hotel Arenas del Mar) where we were staying. Unfortunately, neither Lani nor I are the type get much use out of our own private beach.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2646/4088169282_ff2453cf74.jpg

5. Impressively large crocodiles. They are protected in Costa Rica and their population has rebounded on this river to around 200 per mile.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2558/4087413947_96d0023e5c.jpg

Of course, you saw one of the friendly troop of adolsescent capuchins above, here are others:

A. Bob

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2665/4088164632_bcdae5dbd8.jpg

B. George

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/4088163906_e19cd6b5d3.jpg

C. Steve

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2506/4088163090_6978cfa9f4.jpg

D. Achmed

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2539/4088162316_3dc606141b.jpg

So those are some of the highlights from our time in Costa Rica.

Built in a day of vacation to go see J's grandma and any family that might be around. Problem is, she's been out of town, and I dunno if she'll be in town when I'm out there.

So, just in case... anyone in Tampa? Heh... :)

My 4-year-old niece has definitely been hanging out with my Dad - her vocabulary is surprising and funny.

On Saturday, she met Ariel at the Princess Theater in DL. Ariel apparently told her that if she sees Scuttle, she should give him a message that Ariel is looking for him. For the rest of the day and through the evening, Ella kept saying that we had to look for Scuttle. Over dinner at Storytellers, we told Ella that Scuttle, wherever he was, was probably already asleep.

"Some seagulls are diurnal," she argued, "and some are nocturnal."

She will be a great lawyer some day.

What also helped (as shallow as this may be) was that I met a nice man from Switzerland at Costco. His name is Johann. He's traveling the world for a year. He. Was. Gorgeous.

Oh, he had this nice accent which I guess is a Swiss accent. (Sounds like a German accent to me.) But he asked me if it was okay to get refills at the Costco food court area. I said yes. He had light brown/blondish hair, green eyes and tan skin. He was about 6'2". So friendly. I gave him a few ideas about where he should do some sightseeing (no my apt was not one of them) and shook his hand. He's an IT guy in Switzerland who has made so much money that he can travel for a year. Wow! Anyway, he bought an underwater camera for his upcoming trip to Australia and Fiji. I've never wanted to be an underwater camera more in my whole life.

So, over the last couple days, we've decided to browse the kill shelters. No, we're not over Nala (there just will never be a replacement), but wanted to see if there were any connections.

There were a few "aw, that's cute" moments, up until we visited the shelter in Downey this afternoon and this ginormous brown tabby cat caught our eye for some strange reason. The attendant opened his cage to let me pet him. I went to pick him up, and he jumped right into my arms, extended both front paws up and around my neck, and then decided to lick my right ear for at least 5 minutes, purring the entire time. I couldn't even pull him away, he had that tight of a hold on me - a very powerful and strong embrace. I instantly thought of that cool video of the lion who saw it's original owners for the first time since its wild release. The attendant was even wowed by it.

We're going to be mulling it over all day tomorrow while the place is closed for the holiday. It amazes me that someone so loving would end up in a shelter, and I just can't stand the thought of leaving him there to die. I've never had a cat hug me like that. Ever.

The only thing is... he's HUGE. I think he's even bigger than NA and Euro's Charles. Judging by what it took to hold him, he's gotta be 25 pounds, possibly more, and it's not all fat.

We rescued the big boy! He'll be coming home tomorrow after being neutered, chipped, and vaccinated. They estimate his age at only about 2 years, so he's a perfect fit for our home. :) He also hugged me again. He really has so much love to give. :) They picked him up as a stray, but suspect he had an owner who just let him roam unfixed, without tags or a chip. So, no one claimed him over the past week, and now he's ours.

Here's the crappy cellphone pic I took of him for now: http://twitpic.com/p9u1i

Anyway, since he's a big ol' boy who likes to hug like a lion, we named him Mufasa. :)

Also, I sadly had to leave behind a really adorable gray tabby kitten who was our second choice. He's about 10 weeks old with a really awesome personality and is very healthy. If anyone here, or acquaintances would like to save an amazing kitty, please do so. He's at the Downey shelter (SEEACA) in kennel C40. I know pounds are very difficult to go into, but this one keeps all of their animals behind numerous closed doors, so you can always go into the front office without hearing or seeing anything. And, all you need is the kennel number to adopt, which I've provided, without having to submit yourself to the horrors of the pound. Adoptions there are very affordable at $60, which includes neuter/spay, microchipping, and vaccinations, which is cheaper than any outside vet. They even give a free 4-lb. bag of Science Diet with 'em. Please consider him - he's quite the lover baby. :) And, remember that every time someone is adopted from a kill shelter, two lives are saved, because it frees up room for another incoming animal without anyone being put down.
