Yay for Heidi being home and back on the interwebs!

Meanwhile, I'm in Denver for maybe the week - hopefully less. Flight was pretty choppy, but thankfully not particularly full. Hotel room is spacious - a real suite, not one of those where the bed is on the other side of a half wall. I have a room service salad, a bottle of pomegranate fizzy water, and I already finished my cup of chicken tortilla soup. All of which would be great, if it weren't for this bizarre cold and slippery white stuff all over the ground outside. And it's COLD!!!! Holy crap it's cold! I object and protest!

But, there's allegedly free breakfast in the morning - so we'll see how that is.

Still, no Rat to keep me company and snuggle with.

In case I wasn't clear, I do think lederhosen should be a joke (as well as NBA shorts of pretty much any era since they went from amusingly small to amusingly large). I just think kilts should be too.

Especially utilikilts.

Especially a utilikilt worn while attending a con.

Especially a utilikilt worn while attending a con and paired with a ratty t-shirt you bought from a "humor" site.

Especially a utilikilt worn while attending a con and paired with a ratty t-shirt you bought from a "humor" site and you're so proud of achieving that minimal level of masculinity needed to grow facial hair (a level that my great grandmother achieved, I'll remind you) that you are allowing all 76 hairs to grow without restraint or any attempt at organization.

In other words, especially if you are any of the people I hung out with in high school. (Note: Being a joke is not reason to avoid doing or wearing some if that is what you want to do.)

Kevy Baby
01-13-2009, 02:10 PM
There are several factors that affect utilikilt vs kilt, but the key differences (that I am aware of) include:

Traditional kilts are a wrap of a length of cloth whereas utilikits are usually like a skirt
Utilikilts usually don't have the requisite pleats in the back
Utilikilts are often in plain, solid colors whereas a kilt is made of tartanThere are more, but those are the three key ones that I am aware of

Great way to piss off the IT department.

We had to take away an IM program from some users because it was only for specific users who work on a specific account and users who weren't on that account had access to it too. So the users it was taken from said "fine, we'll work around it and use backdoors". Guess what's now blocked. Guess who got in trouble for circumventing IT policies and content filters.

While IT policies may be inconvenient, and we're all lucky we have access to LoT at work, it's not in anyone's best interest to circumvent the IT policies to get to websites just because you want to. Please don't encourage it.

A first-grade teacher, Ms. Brooks, was having trouble with one of her students. The teacher asked, 'Harry, what's your problem?'

Harry answered, 'I'm too smart for the 1st grade. My sister is in the 3rd grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 3rd grade too!'

Ms. Brooks had had enough. She took Harry to the principal's office.

While Harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms. Brooks he would give the boy a test. If he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave. She agreed.

Harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal:
'What is 3 x 3?'

Harry:
'9.'

Principal:
'What is 6 x 6?'

Harry:
'36.'

And so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know.

The principal looks at Ms. Brooks and tells her,
'I think Harry can go to the 3rd grade.'

Ms. Brooks says to the principal,
'Let me ask him some questions.'

The principal and Harry both agreed.

Ms. Brooks asks, 'What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?'

Harry, after a moment: 'Legs.'

Ms Brooks: 'What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?'

The principal wondered why would she ask such a
question!

Harry replied: 'Pockets.'

Ms. Brooks: 'What does a dog do that a man steps into?'

Harry:
'Pants.'

Ms. Brooks: What starts with a C, ends with a T, is hairy, oval, delicious and contains thin, whitish liquid?'
Harry:
'Coconut.'

The principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.

Ms. Brooks:
'What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky?'

The principal's eyes opened really wide and before he could stop the answer, Harry replied, 'Bubble gum.'

Ms. Brooks: 'What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?'

Harry: 'Shake hands.'

The principal was trembling.

Ms. Brooks: 'What word starts with an 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?'

Harry:
'Firetruck.'

The principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the
teacher,

'Put Harry in the fifth-grade, I got the last seven questions wrong...'

I once had a glow in the dark necklace break and squirt in my eye. That smarted but it also made my eye glow in the dark for about 2 hours which, being Halloween, all of the kids thought was the coolest thing ever.

(I quickly found out that while it may sting, the liquid in those glow necklaces, sticks, etc. is actually non-toxic.)
Ask Alex about glow in the dark eyes.

At least I'm feeling a bit better now... at least competent enough to finally sort through college courses at various places, and make sense of them all on a spreadsheet.

Looks like I found a winning combo of classes at Golden West, so I applied and should be able to register soon. I'll be taking 13 credits whilst running my own business. Shouldn't be too much of a challenge, considering that just over 10 years ago, I was taking 18 credits while working 3 part-time jobs while living by myself.

So, not only will I be learning some advanced graphics stuff, but I'll also be learning the third big video editing program, which should make for nice resume fodder - I'll know all three, and that opens up a whole new world of opportunity. :snap:

And, just for fun, I'm taking a dance class, just like in days of yore.

Last night I had a dream that I was with the Beatles in the reading room of the British Museum in London. They were singing, 'I Should Have Known Better' and 'From Me to You' and I was the harmonica player. It was a fun dream. During our song, a Finnish Men's Choir surrounded the building and sang along.
No idea what it means, but it was fun. I listened to both songs all day today. I kinda want to learn how to play the harmonica now...

(I quickly found out that while it may sting, the liquid in those glow necklaces, sticks, etc. is actually non-toxic.)

I couple of Halloweens ago, I thought it would be cool to have glowing hands to pass out Halloween candy to the kiddo's. As you say, the stuff in the sicks reads "non-toxic" so I cut open a half dozen of them, poured the stuff into a big bowl and then reached in and rubbed it all over my hands.

Arrrrgghhh!!! I forgot one thing. When you "snap" a light stick to activate it what you are really doing is shattering a small glass vial that holds the reactant. So the glowing liquid is filled with tiny shards of glass. I spent the next 20min pulling bits of glass out of my hands.....

Betty
01-16-2009, 01:08 PM
There's a way to do it better then that. Pierce a hole in one end and then squeeze it out. (or flick it all over the walls - but be warned - it's an oily substance and stains the walls. who knew?!)

But man was it fun!

To avoid the humiliation of a trade-in or the hassle of selling it I decided to donate my old car to charity. I made an appointment for it to be picked up between 2:00 and 4:00 yesterday which was perfect because that's when I go over to my dad's to do laundry. (I'd left the car there because I don't have any extra parking space at home.) They called and said they were running late and would be there after 4:00 but they would call me about 30 minutes before. So I waited and waited. At 6:00 the manager of the tow company called and said he wanted to make sure my car was picked up so he was going to jump in a truck and drive right over...from Riverside. So finally about 7:30 I handed over the keys, signed the paperwork, and went home.

My dad and I compared new cars while we waited. He brought home a new HHR on Thursday. My car won on cuteness.

By slippers I mean fuzzy around the house things that I literally never wear.

The sandals I use almost solely as something to quickly throw on to bring the trash out or get the mail, very rare that I wear them out as they are awful.

I also have one pair of sneakers that's exclusively my housework pair, never see anything beyond the back patio.

So in terms of actual shoes that I wear out with any sort of regularity, these would be the 4th pair. And I'm not planning on ever wearing these again.

What sucks is that other departments get to on Friday, another one makes an exception for certain Fridays when muckity mucks aren't in town, while mine poo-poos the practice - though I'm sure I could get away with it if I was the only one around, but that's a rarity I don't count on happening any time during my tenure. I have worn khakis on one of those "muckity mucks gone" Fridays, but got weird looks from my department. We do wear khakis for days when we know they'll be destroyed, but no doubt at least one member of the team will forget and wear his or her "nice" clothes, only to get a tear, stain, and/or dirt everywhere.

The different departments doing their own thing when it comes to stuff like that is annoying. The other thing that is annoying is when no official order comes down to close the office early on holiday weekends and different departments let their people leave early, while others make them stay the full 8 hours. Usually the later is due to the manager being out of the office on that Friday.

The "toe" strap has been cut. For some reason they seemed to fit fine in the store. And they seemed fine at first. But after extended wear it was obvious that the things were half a size too small and the freaking thong was destroying my foot. So I cut the damn thing off. Adding to the utter ridiculousness of wearing those things out of the house.

Isn't that how you're supposed to bowl?

Alex

No not me, I've had a perfect four step slide down since I was seven. And could once lay the ball down on the second board every time without fear of gutter ball (it's been years since I've bowled so probably not any more).

But yes, that is how most people are supposed to bowl because it never puts me at risk.

I bowl with no thumbs. Apropos of nothing really.

What do you do with them while you're bowling?

Alex
01-22-2009, 01:17 PM
I keep them around, they just aren't used for the act of bowling.

Back in high school I bowled in a league (my fathers family were all league bowlers going way back). I suffered a thumb injury (not bowling related) to my left thumb and the options were:

1. Stop bowling for that season.
2. Learn to bowl right handed.
3. Learn to bowl with just two fingers.

I went the third option and got good at it. By the time my thumb healed I was bowling better than than before the injury so I kept doing it. Now I can't even imagine trying to bowl with all three fingers. Once got into a shouting match because a club pro in the alley pro shop absolutely refused to drill me a new ball with just two finger holes. Since the ball was free from participation in some league or another I eventually had to relent and get all three fingers fitted even though I never used one of the holes.

Okay, it's official. I've unwittingly angered the gods of footwear.

I showed up at the field to play soccer today, only to discover that my soccer cleats were not tied to my gym bag as per usual. Fortunately someone had an extra pair of cleats. Unfortunately, they didn't really fit right, so within 10 minutes I had lovely painful blisters on both heels.

And here's the punchline. I get back to work, hobble into the locker room to take a shower...and there are my cleats, sitting in the cubby I apparently left them in 2 weeks ago.

Sigh.

For a short while there was a guy on my soccer team back in college who played barefoot (there was a league rule about shin guards so he wore those but nobody ever thought to require shoes).

We all thought he was crazy but not once in about 8 games did he ever have someone step on his feet. And he could boot the ball a mile when he needed to.

You, today, were presented with an opportunity to be that crazy guy. And you missed it.

Good customer service! It's really a great feeling to get it.

Over the weekend we went off roading out in the Calico mountains. Very fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FqkG14sJVc

Near the end of our journey, the rack on the back broke. One of the welds failed and the whole thing bent down dramatically. We unloaded - took it off - and tried to figure out how to get the rack and the ice chest back home with a back seat full of kids.

It was impossible and we regretfully had to abandon them in the desert. As my we take the pack it in - pack it out pretty seriously, this was a Bad Thing. There was an event the next day so I was pretty sure someone would get the ice chest but leaving the bent metal pieces that no one would want was no good. Especially considering Brian's participation in the Calico Clean Up days where they got rid of all that sort of stuff.

So we took lots of photos and email the company not really expecting much but hopefull they would be helpful in some way. It was only a year old and we couldn't afford to replace it -you woudln't believe how expensive off roading accessories can be! (it was a christmas gift to us the first time around.)

They responded today saying they would replace it for us. I'm thrilled! A company that stands behind their products!

So - Warrior Products has my loyalty and I must let everyone know. :)

Fun video, Betty and great news that the rack is getting replaced. Bummer about the ice chest though, unless they are reimbursing you for that also. I know how expensive all that stuff is because my ex used to off road in his Classic Bronco. He spent a ton of money.

The biggest loss he suffered off roading was when he wheeled over a boulder and the ice chest flew open on the Rubicon trail, sandwiches everywhere.

There was a youtube video of the incident, but he didn't post it (he was driving) and I don't know who did, otherwise I'd share it, because it was rather funny. The flying sandwiches were shown in slow mo. It earned him the nickname of Sammich Man on his 4X4 site for a while.
