in my experience, tats need to have a deep personal meaning (IMO) for those receiving it. those I know who've gotten them purely for aesthetic reasons seem to get tired of them after awhile, either when styles change or they just grow tired of looking at it. those who get them in tribute or for other reasons they hold dear, rarely do.

I would definitely go to get an Xray. No use walking around if it is broken or anything But that's just me.

So, stock market's in the crapper, and my company's stock has followed right along. However, while our stock price sucks right now, as a company we're in really good shape. Growth has slowed, but we're still raking in profit and have large cash reserves. And from what little they let a peon like me know about our near-term business strategy I feel like we're in a good position to capitalize on some changes in our market. If so, our stock price stands a good chance of increasing significantly from this artificially low point over the next couple of years.
So, as I wait until early next week before some funds clear so I can purchase some stock, is wrong of me to be grinning every time I see the price drop right now?

The ramp (I've seen it by other names) makes an appearance in Burn After Reading, the Coen Brothers movie earlier this year. If the house lights were up it would have been interesting to see who recognized it (it was not shown being used, but for those who knew what it was it immediately established why the George Clooney character was where he was).

All of my friends seem to be moving from Myspace to facebook. Personally, I find facebook frustrating (certainly in searching out friends). It's not user friendly. It's not readily searchable. It really frustrates me that you can only "join", therefore "search" x number of geographical areas over any given time. Why the big exodus from Myspace? What is the deal? I have to say that I've never tried Twitter but I have noticed more and more people can be found there; not to mention that a lot of places (like NPR) use Twitter for discussion.
As an aside, I went through a period on MS where I was being contacted constantly by 16-19 yo guys (I don't know if I was in a weird/creepy loop or what). They kept telling me I was a MILF and such. Flattering as that designation may be, still infinitely weird. Yay! It's interesting that it's that much cheaper in the Bay area and in LA. I used to buy my gas at a 76 station in HB but they have been more expensive then everywhere else lately. Costco has been running average with the rest of the HB stations. Regardless, I am happy to be able to fill up for about $25 vs. the $55ish it was costing.

Our yearly company wide inventory is being performed right now. Everything that's included on the inventory list has a property tag witha # and a barcode. The facilities people (plus some temps) are running around scanning things and slapping little green dot stickers on them to indicate they've been scanned.
Yesterday our CFO sent out an email. "Please photocopy the bottom of your laptop where the property tag is located and pin the copy up to your cubical wall so we don't have to flip your laptop over to scan the barcode."

So, yeah, along this type of thought....
Watching the news, of course, we consumers love the low price. Er, wait, this is the price it was before they said prices went up due to demand? Then, the prices fell, and then they said they were going to stop producing so much so that they could charge more since there wouldn't be a surplus?
Okay, but, they say the low prices across the board are bad. I am so f'in sorry. I think, we've been paying way too much for so long that these prices are what, just may be, they ought to be.
Yep, I heard they don't like the low price of oil because then it isn't worth it for some companies to drill. And, with the price of gas low, the oil companies {or whomever} now say they don't have the resources to find other types of fuel.
So, yeah, screw the working people, middle class and your poor. We have to bail out the big companies, we have to pay $4. for gas to make it profitable for the oil companies. {how much did they make last quarter?}
I really feel badly for the people who work within the auto industry, I know at our dealership, they have cut back their number of employees.
Well, cars shouldn't ever have cost so much. Nor should have houses.
Maybe I'm dumb to feel that way but I do. And, athletes shouldn't make so much money, either. :p
Anywho, this is what I told my son when we drove past the gas station with a price of $1.959. I mean, we are so happy that it is this price but damnit, the reason why it went so high....why was that again? They are messing with us. The sad thing is now, the price is low but so many people are out of work or may be even have gotten rid of their cars, there aren't ever any long lines at any gas station I pass. Ever.

I hope this is a direct link to it, but, if not, I wanted to share that the soap I watch, All My Children, have recruited war Vets for their latest storyline.
The main character that they've chosen, Brot, is amazing. When I first saw the show with the vets, I told my son they had to be real people.
I don't think it came out that these are real people until just a few days ago.
I love AMC.
Oh, and, they also currently are running a storyline about Bianca and her fiance, Reece. They wanted to christen their baby but the priest who came said he couldn't do it, didn't realize the two parents were both women.
Interesting how this is working out.

I might be able to work up at least some false sympathy for the oil fvkers if they hadnt been reporting record profits for multiple years in a row....Billions? yeah, screw you. let me show you the specific parts of my a$$ you can kiss
gas is too low, we need to make less..its not our fault
gas is too high....its hurricanes and uh..the war and uh...other stuff thats not our fault
comsumption is too low and folks are using smart transit...lower the price to bait em back in...pretend we didnt notice.
excellent, now theyre driving again and have made holiday plans involving travel...give em a month, then crank up the prices again.
dunno but y'all, but Im kinda tired of this game.
I think Im gonna build a big rig that runs exclusively on the blood of oil company execs.

Days of Our Lives Rocks!
Or so my wife says....
And the I stumbled onto this bit of info from Soap Opera Digest
It's the biggest soap news of the year, if not the decade: Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn have been let go from DAYS. In an exclusive interview in the new Digest, Executive Producer Ken Corday explains that NBC renewed the show, but at a "greatly reduced" fee that necessitates major cuts. Hall and Hogestyn are two casualties, with0;more likely to come. It's unfortunate, because DAYS is on an upswing in ratings (it's the only show that's actually improved since last year), but the rocky economy is taking its toll. "The state of NBC and DAYS is not the same as it was six months ago," laments Corday. "We're lucky that we're still on the air for 20 months, with possibly another year after that."
My wife was not happy. And if she's not happy, I'm not happy. :(

unlikely. at least not until the entire planet embraces something besides gasoline...
translation: only when we don't need it anymore (not likely in my lifetime)What we will probably see is that we won't ween ourselves off of gasoline until we are forced to. Which means that we will never see lower overall gas prices.
So, yeah, screw the working people, middle class and your poor. We have to bail out the big companies, we have to pay $4. for gas to make it profitable for the oil companies. {how much did they make last quarter?}
Well, cars shouldn't ever have cost so much. Nor should have houses.
Maybe I'm dumb to feel that way but I do. And, athletes shouldn't make so much money, either. :p
Why shouldn't athletes (and entertainers) make so much money? What solid reason is there for not making so much? It has already been proven that the market will bear it.
I did the full research on another board that we were all on that crashed and lost all my research. But basically, the oil companies do not make any more than comparable companies on a percentage basis (if I recall correctly, it was around 9-10% gross profit). People just freak out when they see the dollar amount. But when they have sales dollars in the levels they are, even a small percentage of profit is still a huge figure. Gas is still a lot more than here in other countries. It always has been. Are you saying that gas here (the US is higher than other countries or lower? The correct answer is that generally, gas (and diesel) in the US is much less than most other countries (not counting oil producing nations such as Kuwait, Venezuela, Iraq, et. al.)

Sooo... We went to George's Greek Cafe on Pine tonight (Friday night special: Kleftico - marvelous). They just moved to a new location just down the street from the old one. We noticed that the old location already had a new tenant. Some restaurant called Melette Inn. We were trying to figure out just who or what a "melette" is when we noticed that there was an egg with a smiley face right in front of the name. Then it dawned on us....

Well sure, athletes and celebrities make a lot of money and I haven't heard of them not ever being paid.
It doesn't make it right. If things were put into a more realistic amount, perhaps certain things would balance out. I am not saying they are the reason for the cost of gas, the two have nothing to do with one another. Just two thoughts that I had.
What companies are you talking about that make similar profit? Other companies that gouge us? It all sounds good but when you hear excuses why it costs so much and then why they won't process it or how if it doesn't cost so much they can't afford to research other means of fuel, it sure feels like people are being robbed.
As for other countries, I don't know the politics of it but I am only going by {what I know about} our own oil purchasing/consumption. I don't know how other countries obtain their oil/gas. If they have refineries or if they don't.
How else do you explain what has happened with our gas prices? Their reasons don't always go along with what is really happening and they've admitted, basically, to manipulating the oil/refineries to play with the price of gas.
That's all I'm saying . I don't like being part of their game. So, if for a while, the price is low, and they are crying, well, it's about time.

Like I said, all the info was lost, but I do remember that Disney and Apple were two companies that made a HIGHER profit margin than the oil company I compared to (which I believe was Mobil as their announced profits shocked people at the time). Here's a good article about this. (http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/economy/2008/02/01/exxons-profits-measuring-a-record-windfall.html)
Exxon nation. If Exxon Mobil were a country, its 2007 profit would exceed the gross domestic product of nearly two thirds of the 183 nations in the World Bank's economic rankings. It would be right in there behind the likes of Angola and Qatar—two oil-producing nations, incidentally, where Exxon has major operations.
<snip>
Ahead of the pack. Exxon Mobil's profits are 80 percent higher than those of General Electric, which used to be the largest U.S. company by market capitalization before Exxon left it in the dust in 2005. The new economy? Microsoft earns about a third as much money. And next to Exxon, the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, looks like a quaint boutique, with annual profits of about $11 billion.
<snip>
On the margin. The oil industry urges people to look beyond its profits to its profit margin: about 7.6 percent of revenues late last year. That's not much higher than the 5.8 percent profit margin for all U.S. manufacturing, and if you exclude the financially troubled auto industry from that analysis, the oil industry actually appears less profitable than most manufacturers, which were earning 9.2 cents on every dollar of sales.
But unrivaled returns on equity. However, profit margins across industries vary greatly based not on how well each business is doing but how capital- or labor-intensive it is. Oil is among the most capital-intensive. But look at the oil industry's profits compared with shareholder equity it has available for investment. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's most recent analysis of the oil industry's performance, released just last month, showed oil industry return on equity of 27 percent—about 10 points higher than that of other manufacturers. And it has been higher throughout this recent era of high world oil prices, just as it was back during the oil shock that hit in 1980.
Profit margins aren't the whole story.

I almost put this on the Vent thread but since it has a happyish ending...
Yesterday I drove from work in Costa Mesa to an employee luncheon at Five Crowns Restaurant in Corona Del Mar. Close to the restaurant my car started running rough and nearly stalling out every time I had to stop. This has happened before and the last time, three months ago, the mechanic said it was intermittant and I should bring it back if it happened again. Right. I got to the restaurant but I wasn't enjoying myself because I was worried about being far from home in rush hour traffic with a car that wasn't going far. I recently upgraded my AAA membership so I'm entitled to a 100-mile tow but there was a complication. I had intended to go back to work to change clothes and then head over to Disneyland to see Christmas finery so I'd left a bunch of stuff at work, including my house key.
Then my knight in shining armor arrived. He didn't even blink when I asked him to take me by work on the way to a repair shop 25 miles away. After we'd taken care of my car he drove me home. No Disneyland this time but a happy ending after all.
This time they're going to replace the part instead of just cleaning it. It should be ready in a couple of hours. And I'll get back to planning for the new car in my future. No more automotive adventures please.

Here's a good article about this. (http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/economy/2008/02/01/exxons-profits-measuring-a-record-windfall.html)
Profit margins aren't the whole story.I'll post one part of the article that you didn't as it is the basis of my post:
On the margin. The oil industry urges people to look beyond its profits to its profit margin: about 7.6 percent of revenues late last year. That's not much higher than the 5.8 percent profit margin for all U.S. manufacturing, and if you exclude the financially troubled auto industry from that analysis, the oil industry actually appears less profitable than most manufacturers, which were earning 9.2 cents on every dollar of sales. In re-doing my research, using Income Statement data for each of these companies found on Yahoo Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/), I see the following data for each of these companies for their last complete fiscal year (typically 2007)
(all figures in billions of dollars)
Exxon Mobil: (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=XOM&annual) $40.61 profit on $404.552 revenue: 10.0% margin
General Electric (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=GE&annual): $22.208 profit on $172.738 revenue: 12.9% margin
Wal-Mart (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=WMT&annual): $12.731 profit on $378.799 revenue: 3.4% margin
Disney: (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=DIS&annual) $4.687 profit on $35.51 revenue: 13.2% margin
Apple: (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=AAPL&annual) $4.834 profit on $32.479 revenue: 14.9% margin
Altria (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=MO&annual) $9.789 profit on $73.801 revenue: 13.3% margin (Altria is the parent corp of Phillip Morris)
Hewlett-Packard (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=HPQ&annual) $7.264 profit on $104.286 revenue: 7.0% margin
IBM (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=IBM&annual): $10.418 profit on $98.786 revenue: 10.5% marginAs you can see, EM's profit IS in line with many other companies. They just happen to be the largest US manufacturing company in terms of revenue, so their margin dollar figures will be also be the largest.
Or to put it in other terms, if each one of the companies listed about had the same revenue figures as Exxon Mobil, their comparative 2007 annual profit dollar figures would be:
Apple: $60.211 Billion
Altria: $56.660 Billion
Disney: $53.397 Billion
General Electric: $52.011 Billion
IBM: $42.664 Billion
Exxon-Mobil: $40.610 Billion
Hewlett-Packard: $28.179 Billion
Wal-Mart: $13.597 Billion
So, if you think that Exxon Mobil is making too much money, then you really should be going after Apple, Altria, Disney, GE, and IBM FIRST before criticizing Exxon Mobil.
FYI:
GE was included in this comparison because they were in the story and because they are the largest US manufacturer that isn't an oil company or an auto manufacturer
Wal-Mart was included in this comparison because they were listed in the linked US News story
Disney and Apple were included because I referenced them in my previous post
Altria, HP, and IBM were included because they are the rest of the non oil or auto listings in the top 10 largest manufacturing companies according to Industry Week (http://www.industryweek.com/research/us500/2007/iwus500rank.asp).

CP's quoted section does include that paragraph and also includes a rebuttal explaining why that is perhaps not as significant as some people say when using it to suggest that ExxonMobil's profits aren't out of line with industry in general.
I have no idea which is a better argument and I'm sure everybody can find some way to measure that shows whichever point they want to make.
To me it is all moot. So long as whatever money was made was made legally, I don't care if they made $6 trillion last quarter while we all paid $45/gallon for gas.

It has been a great couple days. I had a great evening last night - excellent dinner, iasw looked beautiful, fireworks were great, snow was romantic (and extra foamy, for some reason), lines for most things were short (Nemo was a walk-on, and now that we've done it we never have to do it again), we gave the Pirates cast members something to watch on the cameras, and the evening topped off with running into some very excellent LoTers on the return tram.
Today was another delightful lazy morning of sleeping in and other bed-inspired activities, followed by actually cooking lunch, a movie, and some needed shopping. I can now roast meat while wearing lingerie designed for people my size. Yay! And someone is off picking up Thai food for dinner. I'm a happy girl!

One of the reasons people get more worked up about oil company profits is because we pretty much have to pay whatever price is charged for gas. People see the prices at the pump spiraling upward and feel powerless to stop the drain on their wallet. Apple's and Disney's products are much easier for most folks to choose to partake of or not, so they feel in control of their money spent on those companies.

That's true, Tom.
Also, the high cost of fuel is passed on to the consumer and thus raises prices. This helps to nudge up inflation. So the economy suffers because of it. This can't be said about Disney products. If people can't afford it, they'll avoid it. There's only so much you can cut back on fuel.
However, to speak to the Oil company's side, they make a profit on percentage of price. They have an obligation to their share holders to keep that up. The percentage hasn't changed, the proffits are up because the price per gallon has increased. Reducing the amount of their profit, while a kind gesture to our society, would be against the capitolisim this country is based on, and probably get some board members fired.
