So, I've finally figured out who in the f*ck is the loudmouth in my neighborhood. Here, I was blaming the (apparently) former bad kid (and by bad, I mean it was loud, and his friends were high, drunk, and puking in the streets until something happened and it all stopped) who lives across the street and one house over. It seems that it's actually the relatively good teen next door. Now that he and his buddies are all 16 and able to go places, they're across the street, in the house, upstairs... playing Xbox, or Wii, or who knows. But that's all.. They're screaming about video games until midnight. I have a feeling it's only so loud for me because the window is directly across the street.
I would be pissed if I had to wake up early.. which I kind of do...

Oooo....that would be my house before, b.e.!!
All the gang would hang out in my sons room and he just had to have the window open!!
I told him that it had to stop, even though we never had complaints.
But, then they complain {the family, not the neighbors} about my music while I am working out. I tell them that I don't play it past 11...much...
Sorry it bugs. People get so excited playing those games....

The thing is, I totally understand - I'm a gamer, too! I don't even think they're being that loud - it just happens to be that the TV is just under the window in that room, and the window is wide open during the winter. If they moved the tele, problem would be solved. Then again, it might not be as cool of a gaming room. ;)
If I went to a different room, I'd have problems with the neighbors to the back, who aren't playing games, but are in the backyard fighting. The thing that sucks about summer months is that people tend to take their problems outside, because... you know... it's so nice out.
MouseWife
08-08-2007, 10:28 AM
LOL Oh, they may not be loud 100% of the time but I bet their random shouting is.
We have two phone lines and I would call him from my bed and tell him to make his friends keep it down!!! One guy, poor guy, he just had a deep baratone voice and just talking was loud.
Now my son in law has a PS3 and he yells at the game, cursing too {is that corny, cursing?}. I told him to cut it out as I didn't want to hear it but moreso, the neighbors shouldn't. Funny but our houses face one another slightly as we live on a court. So, yea, open windows suck.
And, I have a sad story. A young man at work passed away on Saturday night. He was in the back seat of a car that lost control {I don't know if they were speeding, but actually, the speed limit is 50 there} when it swerved not to hit a bunny. He died and the other boy in the back seat may not make it. Really hit me hard, he was really a very nice young man, always friendly, always smiling.
I told my son that it was a miracle that his friends survived the accident they were in coming home from Arizona recently. They were going at least 90mph when the guy looked down and when he looked up he was heading into a big truck. He swerved, lost control and rolled his car 5 or 6 times. Amazingly, they all got out of the car and stood there able to see the wreckage. One friend, who remembers his head hitting the roof a few times, had a concussion and another guy broke an arm. Amazing. I asked them when I saw them 'Am I looking at ghosts?'
I told my son to tell his friend I am glad he is alive but my son is never going on road trips with them.

Going to have to disagree with you there.
Ruth is still #1 (primarily because he was also a fantastic pitcher) and Bonds is pretty solid in #2. Henderson can have a spot in the thirties, base stealing is about the most overrated statistic in the game.

It will be interesting to see if anybody wants to spend money on him next season.
Bonds is in the top ten in homers and slugging in the NL, and he's leading the majors in walks and OPS. Someone will want him. Probably in the American League, where he can DH (like Hank Aaron did for his last 20 or so home runs). Plus, I bet his average goes back up now that this is behind him.
Of course, if he's indicted for perjury or tax evasion, that may diminish his value.
Oh, I'm sure that somebody will want him. I'm not sure that the price tag he wants will intersect what people are willing to pay.
Strangler Lewis
08-08-2007, 03:39 PM
If he finishes strong, people will pay because there'll be the prospect of him reaching 800. I can't imagine he'd retire with everyone assuming that Alex Rodriguez will have no trouble breaking his record.

I went to page three of that section and thought some of the article looked familiar. I then realized that I had read ALL of them yesterday.
So I look at the page/date part at the top and it says "Tuesday, August 7" - WTF?!?
I check the rest of the section, and indeed it all says "Wednesday, August 8." Even page 4 (the back side of page three - same piece of paper) says August 8.

I get to keep the house.
He has to pay almost double what he was willjng to pay.
Mediation stands as it is.
Now that I have health insurance from work he can remove me, but if I ever am not covered he has to add me back on (per the judge).
We almost got to see Dawn in cuffs when she refused to leave the courtroom. My lawyer has a policy that when it is time to talk in front of the judge no one else should be there but the 2 parties. She refused to leave. He finally told her she can get out on her own or he would call the baliffs and sheriff to cuff her and remove her forcably. While we were not in there, my lawyer gave us (my sister and friend) a running commentary on what was going on.
Basically, I got a good deal financially, and even better, I have my son.
David has to come up with an itemized list of items he wants before he can remove anything else from the garage/yard/house.
David & Dawn are not happy campers this afternoon.
I just want to cry.

I LOVE that she almost got forceably removed from the court. Although it would have been funnier if they had actually cuffed her and dragged her out (you can add that to the re-telling of the tale later).
Now you can just concentrate on your life. And getting on with it. Heck in a few years you might even look forward too and enjoy your kid free weekends.

The judge asked me if it was possible, I said it was in my name and I had already found out how to get it off the contract. At 3:45 pm today his cell stopped working.

Stupid job. I hate writing up procedures. Especially for something as basic as "fill in the appropriate fields in the data entry form." What specific information pieces are required? Well, look at the form. See those labeled boxes? That's the info needed. How is this complicated enough to merit detailed procedures?
If I never hear the phrase "process improvement" again it will be too soon.
Read the 40 page instruction book for the IRS's one-page 1040-EZ and emulate it.

Awww, hugs Kevy.
Is IVF needed still, even post op?
Also, have you looked into medical tourism (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19100571/)?
After two weeks of Internet research and several late-night phone calls to clinics around the world — seeking information on everything from success rates to lab controls to sanitation standards to their willingness to treat a single woman — she chose a clinic in Cape Town, booked a flight and headed south.
The cost of her three-week IVF vacation? About $6,400, including airfare and hotel stay. Anderson’s IVF — including drugs, procedures, and lab and hospital fees — accounted for just $3,600 of that total.

Did you know that In Vitro Fertilization costs about $15,000 per attempt and that there is only a 35-40% chance of success?
Our insurance would generously cover about $300 of that
I cried when we left the clinic yesterday.
Oh Kevy. I wanted to cry when I read this.
It is so hard to deal with this, but, if it is what you want, there must be a way. If a child is what you both want, I do believe one will come to you... some way.
I found out pretty young that I have difficulties in carrying a child and so I had high risk pregnancies. So scary.
But, before I found a doctor who could help me {and at a high cost to us} we both felt, wow, it was so many emotions. Can't pinpoint just one.
I send gigantic, ginormous hugs to you and your wife through this time.
Actually, could you give it to her for me and her to you? Thanks. :snap:

Monday, Monday
So good to me
Monday morning
It was all I hoped it would be
Oh, Monday morning
Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening you would still
Be here with me
Monday, Monday
Can't trust that day
Monday, Monday
Sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh, Monday morning you gave me no warning
Of what was to be
Oh, Monday, Monday
How could you leave and not take me
Every other day
Every other day
Every other day of the week is fine (fine), yeah
But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying all of the time

We're back! We just got home about an hour ago, and I went directly to this thread to do some catching up. MG- you go, girl! KB- I hope with all my heart you and Gus become parents- I truly believe you will be terrific ones!
We had a great time, but it is good to be home. The animals are swarming us and my house is so clean I could cry. (My sis Bobbi took care of the house and animals while we were gone, and she is the bestest housecleaner on the planet). Some time ago, my sis-in-law, also named Bobbi (Jo) went on an Oregon coast trip with us, and my Bobbi took care of the house. Upon returning, Bobbi Jo took one look at the house and exclaimed "She is a goddess! She was right.

Yep. I will have limited access. I am the one in charge of ordering office supplies, so I will be able to access the Stapleslink website and Mapquest (for the warehouse), but that is all. I just wish the owners would wise up and realize that she is the one causing the drama in the office. As of right now, they think that she walks on water and the rest of us are just jealous of her.

Today's exercise in futility --
Clueless dolt from another unit: Please complete a PO and sign off on the attached check request to reimburse Grand Poobah for his moving expenses.
Me: Check requests can not be used to reimburse moving expenses. [In fact, check requests are not used with POs at all, so that makes no sense.] Moving expenses have to be approved by academic HR and are subject to review by the state. AHR won't approve the move unless a PO has already been entered, so either a PO already exists or the expenses have not yet been approved. In addition, you must include documentation of the move (receipts, something) so that the state can review the request for allowable expenses.
Clueless Dolt: I sent the moving form to (person utterly unrelated to any of this.) Please sign the check request form.
Me: Check requests can not be used to reimburse moving expenses. Did AHR sign off on the moving expenses form?
Clueless Dolt: Grand Poobah needs to be reimbursed right away. Please sign the check request form.
*headdesk*
It doesn't matter if I sign it or not - purchasing won't process it without the correct signatures on the correct form. And the state LOVES to scrutinize self-moves and cross out line items and it can take six months (or longer) to reimburse a self-move. So have fun waiting for your money.

Try Saliene spray. My Doctor reocmmended it. She says it works about 70% of the time to clear out sinuses when allergies are bad. And since it's just salt water it has no side effects etc. It seems to help me, and it's cheap.

I hear ya! I'm in that same boat, too. Awful, isn't it? However, if it is an infection, I can tell you from experience that antibitotics are your best bet. I certainly don't want to be all preachy like, but you NEVER want to let the infection grow & worsen- TRUST ME. I did once, and soon, my head, nose, throat and ears were in so much pain I thought I'd have to hit the emergency room. It felt as if a razor blade was caught in my throat. I had a similiar feeling last week, and sure enough, my Doctor told me my glands were swollen due to my sinuses. Ick and ouch! I don't want you to experience that!
I'm riddled by sinus drama, expecially this year. It's been awful! I saw my doctor last week, and he put me on prescription Singulair & Alevert. I'm a little nervous to take them, due to all of the side effects. I told him that I quit taking Sudafed, which is highly recommended by my Doctor. I love the result that Sudafed produces! However, Sudafed causes my anxiety to spike. Once my heart starts beating rapidly, my panic disorder kicks in. No fun.
Here's what my Doctor recommends and I really suggest that you give 'em a whirl-
*Allergy & Sinus aleving medication: He highly recommends Sudafed! I'm very sensitive to anti-hystamines, which is why I haven't taken Alevert yet. Alevert is comparable to Claritin, which you are taking, correct?
*Nasal Spray: Nasal Spray was also recommended by Katiesue. I couldn't breathe very well last night, and my boyfriend shared his bottle of Zycam with me. AWESOME STUFF. However, make sure you choose the Zycam with menthol & eucalyptus action. I'm highly allergic to eucalyptus, but not in the nasal spray. It's amazing stuff and will clear you up in a New York minute.
*I cannot recommend this stuff enough (run, don't walk, to the store!):
http://www.nasalrinse.com/products.shtml
I love the Sinus Rinse Kit, it's so simple to use! After one use, you'll be breathing so much better! However, I do notice that once my nasal passage is clear, my allergies will kick up even more so (due to the fact I'm all cleared out) this is common, but daily use will begin to eliminate this problem. My Dad, who has awful sinus drama, swears by this stuff and has avoided any sinus infection this season! My boyfriend's Mom swears by the Neti Pot, which my Mom also swears by! I have the Neti Pot, but honestly, it freaks me out & is too messy. I mean, you're literally shoving a teapot spout up your nose, and the result is not pretty until you get the swing of it. I choked, coughed and was able to breathe clearly, but what a mess! you can't go wrong with any of NeilMed's stuff!
Anyhoodle, my two cents! I hope you feel better! :)

I was once told by a nurse that antihistamines and decongestants work against eachother, to some degree, which explained why those supposed all-in-one allergy medications did nothing for me but make me tired. She recommended I use Tavist Sinus (which was different from Tavist-D in that is was ONLY the decongestant), and that was the first thing that ever seemed to work on my allergies. The best part is, because it's a decongestant, it works terrifically on reducing sinus pressure, because the whole point is to encourage everything to drain out.
Can't find Tavist Sinus these day, but basically anything with pseudo-ephedrine in it will do the trick. Yeah, the stuff they now make you ask the pharmacist to get. My attitude towards allergy medicine is if you don't have to go on a government list to get it, it isn't good enough.

I didn't sleep much last night due to allergies. I'll try some of the things recommended. The thing that seemed to help this morning was a TheraFlu packet. Sudafed unfortunately did nothing, and neither did Claritin. Drinking some hot tea helped (but doesn't do anything for helping me sleep) and cough drops helped.

You know what I love? I love having budget meetings where they talk about how with my increased duties and responsibilities and such they'll have to pay someone about 18K more/year to replace me. And boy, that's going to be hard to come up with in the next couple months. And then they find out I'm not leaving until sometime after graduation, which is the end of December, and they blurt out, in the meeting with me: Great! Now we don't have to come up with the extra funds until 2008!
Oh wait - that's things I *don't* love.
Nice to know that I'm worth a third more than I actually earn, and that you'll give it to the next one, and that you want me to request funds for that next person, but that you expect me to do all this new stuff for the same amount. Because you don't need to pay me because once I graduate I will instantly be rich because apparently everyone with a JD is rolling in the extra dough.

Oh, my deal that I've been busting my ass for is in serious danger of falling apart because the original listing said the place had central air, and it turns out it doesn't have a/c, in which case we'd have never gotten this far into trying to make a deal, so I've potentially done all this work for nothing, unless we can now strong arm the bank (it's an REO property, the bank is the seller) into making an even better deal than we'd been trying to put together. And that's IF my clients even want to bother.
I have invested so much time and effort into this deal, and was getting SO close to making it happen, only to have this happen. It's very demoralizing.

Well, no, she wasn't talking to me, she was on her cell phone, of course, in the toilet. So I got to listen to her (loudly) order tickets for the 9:15 show (of what I don't know, sorry). I also heard her credit card number, her address, and her home phone number.
Do our brains all turn to mush when we pick up a cell phone? What was she thinking? Actually the stupidest thing was that I couldn't bring myself to flush the toilet until she was finished with her phone call. Maybe she didn't mind having a phone conversation with the sound of toilets flushing in the background but I don't think that whoever she was talking to had to know what I was doing.

I'll admit to having brought my phone into a restroom because I'd been on hold for god-knows-how-long before I realized I had to pee. Fortunately I have yet to be caught in the act by someone actually picking up, but there comes a point where I'm willing to take the embarassment of talking in the restroom over having to hang up and sit on hold again.

Any chance you can negotiate with the bank to add a/c?

Look at it this way, taking a job is not a life sentence. It is always easier (at least in my experience) to hunt for a job while you have one. So if job #1 is not ideal, there will be another, no question.

Yes, sometimes I think our brains *do* turn to mush when we deal with a phone. I don't like the people who *have* to answer a phone if it rings, even if they have a real live person they're talking to. If it's an important call, then maybe, but please respect the fact that you have a guest. My mom gets aggravated by the people at her work who have to call somebody, anybody, the second they get off work. Must be on the phone!!!! It's weird.
I would have been flushing frequently. Or making loud noises of a bathroom nature.

I'd like to thank the powers that be that put the thought into my head to check and see if there was any food downstairs. Somebody brought in Pasta Bravo! (Normally title companies bring in food on Tuesdays, so having there be something downstairs on a Wednesday is unusual... but nice!) And me being so hungry and all.
As far as the deal... my clients are thinking about whether they want to bother, and looking into how much it would be. Because the bank is not going to want to deal with actually having the a/c installed, they'll be more amenable to giving a credit of some kind for the cost of doing it, and have the client do it after close of escrow.
And then there's the matter of seeing if the bank is going to accept a new, lower offer. Which I'm guessing not, because the bank probably thought they were selling a place with no a/c and my buyers thought they were buying a place with a/c. But we'll see... the listing agent has a bit of egg on their face now for having it wrong in the MLS originally, so hopefully they will champion our cause to the seller if my buyers still feel like buying.

x-posted - sorry for those of you seeing this twice.
Yes, it's episode eleventy-two of "things that are conspiring to drive Prudence mad"
Or: No, it's not all in her head, some people really are out to get her.
Just got off the phone with the clerkship adviser at my school. It's a new position this year. SU has never really pushed students to do clerkships before. I don't think there's been anyone from SU clerking federally for years, and no list of judges who've hired SU alumni (and thus don't go "where?!" when they see our transcripts.)
But, getting students out and clerking is a way to increase the profile of the school, which will increase the school's ranking in the annual US News & World Report thingy. Driving up the ranking is the Dean's #1 priority, and getting students clerking is her #1 priority way of accomplishing that. So, that's why I've been encouraged to apply like I have been - applying anywhere I'd be willing to go, as broadly as possible. As fast as possible. And preferably by US Mail, because the online system sees me as a current student.
(For those who haven't heard me say this a billion times already, rising 3Ls can't apply until September 4. Graduates can apply any time. No one knows what to do with students graduating in December, who are over half-way through their 3L year and thus not rising 3Ls, but also not graduates. In the past, we've been treated as grads (everyone with a 2007 graduation date is treated the same - May, June, August, December, whatever), but the people who run the online application system decided - just this year, of course, to lump us in with the current students, because in their view we're regular students who took extra classes and are graduating a term early to cheat the system, and not part-time students graduating a term late. Whatever.)
The preference is to send hard-copy applications to judges that don't require the online application system, so that we can get seen early. Because as soon as a judge finds a candidate they like, the position is filled. They don't wait until the posted deadline, review all the applications, schedule interviews, and do all the interviews, and then decide. They schedule interviews as applications come in, and as soon as they get one they want, that's it - game over.
So, why is Prudence bitching today, you might ask? Because I just found out from the clerkship adviser that I'm not imagining things - the staff responsible for generating the faculty reference letters have been DELIBERATELY stonewalling the process. "Pushback" was the term used. The staff have decided, all on their own, that students are applying to too many places, because it's never been like this before. The latter part is true, because the school has never pushed this possibility before. And now it is, and so letters are needed. And they're needed in a timely fashion, so that we can get applications in BEFORE the position is filled.
But no, the staff don't want us to do that. And that's why it takes 3 weeks to get 10 letters from a mail merge data source *I* provided, ready for merging with the ALREADY WRITTEN reference letter. Because the staff think our requests are inappropriate, they won't do them. Period.
So, the Dean says "apply!" The career office says "apply!" And the staff say "tough sh!t, no reference letters until we feel like printing them."
I know it's a PITA to do this stuff. I used to have that sort of job and had to do the letters. I know. I'm sorry. I would have brought them chocolates at the end to thank them. But no, now they get nothing. They have deliberately been not producing the letters, which means that several times I've mailed off packets and later that day growled as the job status changed to "filled". What if I had been able to mail that 3 weeks earlier? Hmmmm?
The good news is that the Dean has authorized the clerkship person to hire a temp who will now produce all these letters as the temp's sole and exclusive task. The bad news is that it will take a week at least to get this person hired and get the reference letter files from the secretaries - who apparently are even resisting the idea of someone ELSE doing the work, because we are just greedy students who don't deserve nice jobs.
The reason I've been so miserable the past year or so is that it feels like at every turn in this job search process, something goes terribly - and unusually - wrong. A bad grade was a mistake. Can't apply until 9/4. Secretaries won't provide references. Law school felt right, felt like what I was supposed to do, but these roadblocks are so infuriating. Every day I want to give up. I feel like I'm in a marathon and I've hit the "wall" and now I'm just mind-over-mattering myself forward. Why the **** am I doing this to myself? I keep hoping that this is some karmic down payment on what will eventually be wonderful, but then more **** happens and I think well, maybe this is the wrong path after all? Maybe I'm suppose to be a stay-at-home mom or something. Nothing wrong with that as a career, but it's not the career I want. I want to research and analyze and write and split the hair and argue about whose half-hair is larger.
And right now I want to beat my own brains out on the nearest brick wall.
And thus concludes today's episode of "what the hell is wrong with that Prudence chick?"

I got to explain to him what the financial settlement is and why it wasn't $200 higher. All he could remember was, "Something about $200." When I told him how much he owed me he gasped and asked if I had to have it all by Friday. He was very subdued and meek. Weird. This is definately not the guy I married.

Despite my decrepit looking exterior I'm still a long way from retirement. So for now it all stays in stocks and I don't worry about these dips and peaks...
Yeah, it has been a sharp drop but it is still above where it was six months ago.
If it keeps dropping that's bad but unless you put all your money in within the last six months or expect to take it out in the short term the pain shouldn't be too bad yet except in terms of "what might have been."

See! (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070816/wall_street.html?.v=6) All better now. :)
Up over 300 in late trading....But the Dow ended the day DOWN 15.69 points - lest anyone think there was a gain for the day.
I would say the Dow was UP over 300 - just that the market overcame a 300 point down day.

Henry's is owned by Wild Oats. Wild Oats and Whole Foods are trying to merge, but the merger is getting a lot of static from the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). The FTC sez that the merger would stifle competition in this segment of the market.

Heh, another little gem in that article:
As part of its suit, the FTC revealed that Whole Foods Chief Executive Officer John Mackey made anonymous postings on Yahoo! Inc.'s financial message boards promoting his company from 1999 to 2006 using the name ``rahodeb.''
Mackey is under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the company's board is internally reviewing his actions.
Anyone wanna bet his wife's/mother's/daughter's name is Deborah?

Good guess! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mackey_(businessman))
Mackey married Deborah in 1992; they have no children, but Mackey is close to the two children of former longtime girlfriend Mary Kay Hagen
this is my favorite:
As a student of philosophy and religion at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1970s, Mackey thought a vegetarian co-op might be a nice place to find a girlfriend

So I'm bummed now... my company decided they only want to pay for one Photoshop license (my boss'), so they made me uninstall/remove/delete mine.
Pity, I did some good stuff on there, but I understand why, because I didn't use it *that* often, and CS is not a cheap program. (Naturally I made mention of the much-less-expensive-yet-still-nicely-functional PS Elements, for his future reference)
Have you checked out GIMP? I've not used it but I've heard it's a good substitute - and free!

What idiot forgets to renew their domain name only in the most heavily trafficked month of the year for Valentino fans?
{raises hand} that would be me
Not only did I forget to renew, I did not (beyond idiotically) not update my info and change of email address with netsol when I moved back here last summer. (WTF, I changed everything else?) Fortunately, I knew it was coming up (I missed by 5 days) and I still have the barest basic earthlink email at $3 a month which just sent me a reminder (but I am about to kill earthlink as almost nothing but spam is in there now).
Now I wait to see how long it takes for lunarpages and network solutions to recognize I've renewed and my account is in good standing and regenerate my site

One teeny tiny glimpse of hope peeking out. I don't even want to talk about it for fear the forest sprites will interfere and spoil any good luck. (I feel like I'm back in Russian class, suddenly.)

Ooh! You speak Russian? My great regret is my mom never taught it to me (my grandmother never spoke a word of English)

I got a cellphone for $5 today at our work's "lost and found" fundraiser sale - it unlocked pretty easily, and will be a nice replacement for the most recent victim of Splash Mountain :)

Motorola V180 - just a simple flip, but I don't use a phone for anything more than occasional calls home.

I'll ask around
Don't know a darn thing about them but one of their San Francisco offices (they have several) is in the Transamerica Tower, so you could maybe work in a landmark building.
In case you don't know:

The poor people at the Utah mines... Three rescuers have died due to another cave in... Six miners still missing. It's like tragedy following tragedy. The mine owner hasn't handled this well, but I do think he cares.
Story here. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070817/ap_on_re_us/utah_mine_collapse)

Today is Maddy's last day at her after school/daycare. She's been going there for seven years now. Yesterday was 6th grade camp at her new school. She got to meet her teachers now she's so excited for next week. Hopefully middle school doesn't suck as much as elementry did.
