I'm actually lovin' the cold, but, it really isn't cold, yet. We slept with the fan on, it is sunny outside, I'm still wearing a t-shirt. So far so good.

I have a question. I was talking with the Hubster and I told him that on our trip up next week that I thought we shouldn't go into L.A. 'proper' as he had suggested.

"L.A. 'proper?" he asked. And I said, 'Yes, we say we are going to L.A. but we really aren't, we're going to Anaheim.'

I know I've heard this many times before, or at least, it is in my head/vocabulary this way. He said I am making up words again.

I haven't looked it up to verify my thinking, I thought, since there are many smarty pants intelligent people here, colorfully worded, writers, etc., someone may be able to comment?

Thanks!

Hee hee, thank you. Eh, I am not always quite so proper with anything.

So, your explaination is exactly what I thought but could not put into words.

Aw, JW, well if it is a promotion, it means more money so that would help in the longer commute issue? Or would you rather live in Santa Ana? {edit: JW, ah, you found the definition!! Thank you!}

All I know, gas is expensive. We have 3 tanks to fill, at least once a week.

Ha ha, exactly!! I tried to use San Diego County as an example. What is funny, growing up, we lived in 'San Diego'. When you'd tell people that {and still, I hear it on the radio} people laugh like 'No kidding!'. But, our address was San Diego. There are other areas, like National City, Chula Vista, Kearny Mesa, La Mesa...well, you know what I mean. Although...I do know you can put San Diego for Paradise Hills and they'll still get it. Must be the zip code...

Oh, well, now I know: No livie in Santa Ana...gotcha!

I can't remember if I mentioned this already or not, but I've decided my newest suit is a winner. When I showed up Wednesday for my interview, the receptionist in the career center had to ask whether I was the interviewer or the interviewee. I got a teensy bit of pleasure out of that. Apparently when I try I look sufficiently put together to pass as an actual professional.

I was there again this morning (but in jeans) for a clerkship interview strategy session and watched the other students coming in for interviews. Most of them looked obviously like students. For the men, it was that they looked so young. For the women, it was their suits. Apparently most women haven't heard of tailors and just wear theirs off the rack when they shouldn't -- their suits were saggy, drooping, awkward, and just generally ill-fitting. And most of them looked pretty cheap, to be honest. I've decided that you really can tell sometimes whether a suit is cheap or expensive. More expensive suits just hang better. The fabric drapes better, the construction is better, and with a little tailoring even someone like me can look fairly damn presentable.

Plus, I was wearing the Red Shoes of Doom. They rock.

On the Rodent front, Remy is doing well in spite of a broken leg. All of the swelling is down and it does not seem to be slowing her. I went looking in the cage tonight, she was up on top, in the hammock (for the first time) curled up with the moody Baby Smurf (aka Bitey Smurf). I know Squiggles has been taking extra care of her, babying her, every chance she gets. Yesterday morning she was dragging her around by the scruff of her neck (this was after pulling her tail). Last night I couldn't find Remy anywhere. Squiggles was alseep in Remy's usual spot. When I called for her I saw her nose pop out, she was asleep UNDER Squiggs.

The key to Yom Kipur (at least the key when you're staying home instead of going to services) is staying up as late as you can stand when you're only a little hungry and hope that you sleep through the bulk of the hunger.

You know what sounds like a good idea at midnight, slightly hungry and very tired? Going out onto the patio, in the rain, in my underwear to attempt a fix for a problem that probably won't work.

Did I mention that the rain gutter is jacked up and creates a lovely waterfall right outside the patio door?

I should probably sleep.

We just packed up the new much smaller lighting kit after testing it. 250W bulbs are bright. Ouch! I've got a commercial to shoot on Sunday, so that should be fun. Although, it could be interesting if I decide to bring the absinthe tomorrow night, because I heard it takes a long time to wear off. I can see my thoughts now... "Pan left.... slowly... zoom... slowly... oooooh, fairy!" Hopefully I'll get enough decent shots to at least fix it in post. ;)

And, speaking of shoots, a member of my business network wants to hire me for a show that he's pitched to a national cable network (I can't disclose which or what the show involves), and it looks like they're interested in picking it up! He sent me the pitch tape, and it's totally something that I can do. We're getting together on Monday to discuss it, and then we'll be meeting with execs from the network in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, I found some local subjects that are related to the show, so I'm going to go shoot and edit those next week and use that as a little demo reel to show that I can handle it. If I'm awarded the gig, it will be a 22-episode deal, with international release! :D

Nope, no socks. I was outside for all of 30 seconds, it wasn't that bad. I don't think it was raining all that hard, but the water pouring off the roof made it a thousand times worse. Of course, we knew about this problem from last winter, but completely forgot to contact the HOA about it over the summer. I suppose we should do that now.

My son cleared out his room. I am now going through his things, I can't just throw anything away. I am not sure what to do with what we have. Ghost Buster toys, Mighty Max, Micro Machines, G.I. Joes, Hot Wheels.....no packaging. But tons of stuff. I think we should keep some things, I tell them they'll find themselves scouring swapmeets for these things when they are older.

And, the older kids have things out here for when they move. A desk, some sort of guitar amps {huge and I'm glad they have them but....}.

It's a rental condo that we're trying to qualify for. But, they're having issues with my being self-employed with no tax return on file yet, since it's been less than a year. So, they still haven't made a decision, even though I gave them 6 months of bank statements to show there's been income. The owners are being very anal retentive.

We won't be buying a house for a couple years yet, once the market is better.

The place is great though - seriously much better than I imagined, and just one section of the patio is 10'x50', there's also a 10'x10' area and a 20'x20' porch area, all connected. It's also very secluded. I don't really want to post the pics, because the place looked like swiss cheese when I saw it, since they just finished up replacing the pipes and hadn't put the ceiling and walls back together, and there was scrap crap everywhere. It was quite the obstacle course, but thankfully, I could get the gist of how it's going to look. And, it couldn't be more perfect.

She seemed very intelligent and friendly, but had no collar and was out very late (and seemed desperately interested in coming inside)

Well, anyway, she DOES belong to someone, kinda. After asking around and talking to several people who also thought she was homeless, one of the little girls said her family owns her. I was surprised to find out that not only was she was not an adolescent (due to her size and skinniness, we thought she was), but she had had kittens who were now almost her size!

Anyway, ever since the kittens, she won't stay home at their house, and she won't eat there. Which, I guess, explains her skinniness. The little girl basically said we could let her in, though I plan on approaching the mother if Pumpkin decides to stick around. Tonight is sort of the first experiment, because it's the first time since that Pumpkin came around our front door, and decided (since I allowed her) to walk in. If Barnum doesn't scare her off, that is. He's VERY excited to have someone else in the house.

I think I might have to hate you for the day. WE'll have to chat. I want to know if my old lenses will work on that body. They'd likely work, but one limitation is that the body doesn't have an autofocus motor, so you have to have a lens with its own autofocus motor (AF-S or AF-I) for autofocus to work. Otherwise it's a standard Nikon F mount, so any lens that fits an F mount should work.

Why am I always befuddled by dwindling account balances? Even when I pull up account activity with balances and can see it go down, I find it hard to believe it goes down as fast as it does when I didn't think I spent that much.

I hate being horrible at numbers.

I also hate banks for their outrageous overlimit fees, and for charging it for every $4 coffee you bought at Starbucks rather than once per day that you get overlimit (because, like I knew, right? You think I'd have put a latte on my card if I knew I was overdrawn?)

I was worried because she has a bright red comb and red jowl-thingys under her chin. The only thing keeping me thinking she was a hen was that she never crows, she does make a noise that sounds like she is trying to bark. If she ever does lay eggs they will be brown, not the white we had been looking for.

My TiVo has been downloading for the last 90 minutes. Our Earthlink service has been out for a couple of weeks now. Since I am able to steal wireless from my neighbor and have been super busy lately, I haven't been trying real hard to get the problem fixed (the issue is a busted router, but the idiots in India CS keep insisting that somehow the NIC cards on two computers plus the router all went out at once - it can't be their DSL modem ).

But then I realized that out TiVo is set up to download updates via our wireless broadband network. So, we have had no programming updates for a while and TiVo is out of info. Our primary watching is via our HD DVR through TW, so I hadn't really noticed.

If I can figure out how to get an Earthlink "bring your own service" email service for a couple bucks a month (I want to keep my Earthlink email account for a while), I am switching to DSL Extreme for service.

Well...so I thought Remy was doing ok...up until tonight. She was playing with my hand and I went to do the tummy rub on her. That was when I saw it. She has a compound fracture and her leg is wide open with a little tiny bone sticking out. She never bled and the wound isn't gross or anything. There is nothing that can be done for her. For the 2nd time in 2 weeks I will be heading for the vet to have another rat put down. I lost it when talking to my mom. I really don't think this was caused by the cage, I really think it does have something to do with the breeder she came from. My mom feels that based on all of the problems I have had with rats from Petco, they are inbreeding and their animals are paying the price with respatory problems and weak bones. She thinks this had to have been a previous injury and only became aparent once she was able to be active.

I am just sick right now. How much more can one person deal with?

I see a trip to Tulare in my future...

Poor Nickolas is blaming himself. We have had a running joke, that is not so funny right now. In the past I have told him that every rat he has picked out has had issues. This dates all the way back to Twitch and her stealing to Daisy being preggers, most recently Smurf being psycho. All I could do was reassure him that this was in no way his fault.

I am now trying to figure out when we can hit the road. He is at his dad's for the next 2 weekends and the weekend after that is our DLR trip.

If I can get him to do his homework in the car, we may go tomorrow after school.

The only problem with going to Tulare is that we will end up with 2 girls...they are just too darn cute to get only one.

Tonight I have two utterly unrelated thoughts.

First: I want the WV clerkship so much I can't even stand to think about it any more. I want to wish it into existence, but if I think about it too much I'll get my hopes up and then possibly face a big disappointment. And maybe there are others out there without other options who need it just as much - or more - than I do. So, I instead spend my energy hoping that they all get offers they like better, leaving the WV clerkship to me. And since I'm hoping those others get something they wanted better, that's a good deed, right? That's not being selfish, right? *sigh*

Second, I have been plagued this week with XTC earworms. Yesterday, I kept counting every step as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...senses working overtime...and then I'd start counting again. Today I kept making plans for Nigel. Why is this? Why do they haunt me so? As a counter-measure, I downloaded a bluegrass version of Round and Round, which is decidedly not an XTC song. Although if I start humming that people will think I'm listening to RATT and not the Meat Purveyors.

I need sleep.

Mousey Girl
09-26-2007, 01:10 AM
I can't sleep.

I keep thinking about stuff, in general, but my mind is focusing on the situation at hand.

My track record with PetCo is 1 1/2 out of 5 (or 6). Sweetness&Light came from PetCo, but not from their breeders. The 1/2 was Sniff, who had some sort of strange brain thing that caused her to have seizures and a short life.

My Tulare pet store is 6 (+7 if you count Daisy's babies that I gave away) out of 6 (or 13). Daisy and Peach lived out their full life span, as did (and are) Daisy's daughters. Out of Daisy's 10 babies, I know of 2 that are still alive. At least 4 lived past 2.

Oh, and as I was closing up for the night I saw what I thought was a piece of plastic stuck under the leaf thingy under the front door. Nope, not plastic or a leaf. It was a dead toad. Great, just great.

We had a problem for a while with the gaggle of teens that seemed to be across the street, to the point that they were partying and trash was everywhere. Essentially we did nothing, but eventually things took their own course with the kids, and someone did call the cops on them.

As teens are wont to do, they've grown up since and are relatively quiet and reasonable people, but it was awful for a while. Hearing the sounds of puke in the dark hours of the morning isn't good either... :)

Snowball fights, sledding, and cocoa from a Thermos, that sort of thing.

Grrrrr...

Teen boys.

We have a number of them in the neighbourhood and apparently they are hitting the trouble causing phase. So far it's minor issues like trash in our mail boxes, small fires (like setting a paper airplane on fire...), etc... You don't want to know some of the crud I pulled off in those years.

Have I ever told you about the napalm fire we set that blocked the entire width of the street? For a half hour?

Ah, good times!

After 2 hours in the car we arrived home with Rocky (solid beige) and Tinker (sort of albino). So far, so good. Rocky is on the top perch cleaning herself, Tinker is on the bottom of the cage sleeping. Both girls let me pick them up, without too much fuss. The other girls are rather disinterested.

I felt like taking a shower when I got home tonight, so I did. And boy was Boris upset with me! I'm used to him trying to grab my leg if I walk by him while stepping into the shower. But this time he came running into the bathroom and started swatting me. And while I was in the shower he kept howling, and then stood up on his hind legs and pounded on the shower door. I opened it a bit to reassure him and he reached in and swatted at me repeatedly until the water drove him away. And then he just howled until I got out. I have no idea what made the shower particularly hazardous tonight such that he was taking such steps to save me from it.

Sorry to hear about your loss MG. Ya my store does have issues at times with reptiles and small animals but for the most part they are better than Petco. I have had numerous daily customers tell me they will absolutely not go to Petco nor will i ever again. I got Beauty Queen my hamster from Petsmart (not my store but the Valencia one) and she's almost a year old now. :) The longest i've had a hamster the last one i got was from Petco and she didn't live very long. Most of our rats are sold as soon as we put them out and we did have a return one due to biting but other than that no major problems. Good luck MG.

The problem I have is both with PetCo and PetSmart. They seem to use the same breeders, but only PetCo gets the female rats.

The store I go to in Tulare is small, privatly owned. It is one of the few privately owned petstpres left in a 100 mile radius. The owner did tell me something interesting yesterday. When they are handling the babies, if any bite hard enough to draw blood they become instant snake food. Smurf is a moody/psycho thing, but she has never bitten that hard, just enough to let me know she wants some attention. I just wish I knew why she is so fascinated with my elbow (that really hurts).

Both girls made it through the night. rocky and Smurf, after some minor scirmishes, seem to be inseperable. they are curled up in the hamock together. Tink prefers the lower levels but has still managed to explore the entire cage.

They are both acting like normal, active baby rats. Looking back at the last 2 weeks, Remy was never as active as these 2 are.

You're dying to hear about the IRS interview, aren't you? Well, don't you worry, my little goslings, Pru is here to tell all.

I hate interviews with poor interviewers. It was 30 minutes of stock questions that could be found in any standard "how to interview" guide. And because they were just using a list of stock questions without any real thought put into it, the questions tended to be a bit repetitive.

But, they are the first employer to come bearing gifts. I now have at my desk a tote bag and water bottle proudly sporting the IRS logo and some inspiring words about how great they are.

Totally bizarre.

gifts for an interview? thats a first for me

seems a lot of public sector interviews are like that. something about fairness in selection requiring all the initial interviews to be the same blah blah. so yeah, chances are good it was totally scripted. it probably also speeds up the process a bit on the initial run through if there are a large number of candidates

however an interview is an interview...but I never got any prizes for them...dang it.

nice going

It would have been hilarious to see the interviewer's face if you had said that. We've had an auditor in here from the IRS. It amazes me how hard-line she is about not accepting ANYTHING. For example, we had a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts in the office. When we asked her (along with everyone else) if she would like one, she seemed almost offended that we even offered. I had to insist that she allow me to open the door for her when she was wheeling her computer and files out of the office one day (I happened to be coming in at the same time).

I was supposed to be at a school function at some point between 5 and 8, and then another thing that goes from 9 until 2AM (though I was only going to stay a while.)

Now I face a dilemma.

I'd much rather have a 2-year clerkship. A 1-year clerkship that starts in August means that I'd be applying for the next job or clerkship before I even started the first one. And a district court judge is considered to be more prestigious than a magistrate judge and would be an easier path to a potential circuit court clerkship.

However, all things considered I'd prefer Wheeling to Sioux Falls. And while I don't really want to have a huge lag time between graduation and a job, and 8 months seems like a lot, 1 week seems too short. That would be packing up, selling the condo, and relocating -- all in three months. While finishing classes. In the winter. At the holidays. In the snow. Uphill both ways, barefoot.

I don't know whether I hope SD judge offers me the position or picks someone else. ARG!

Please, pretty please, cross your fingers and toes and hope that The Honorable Judge from Sioux Falls calls me soon to offer me the position.

Honestly, he sounds like a good guy. He said he calls his clerks his attorneys, not his clerks, because he feels "clerk" is too demeaning for the level of work his clerks do.

I know I keep blathering about this, but it would be such an amazing opportunity. Even if it means frozen winters.

Well, the condo is more likely to sell the following spring than it is during the holidays (typically THE slowest time of the year... if it can get any slower  ) I don't know if that influences your decision at all.

The Seattle market is the only one that's hot right now, or so the paper tells us. From that perspective, I'd like to sell before it crashes like everywhere else. (And buy somewhere that it's already crashed!) The district court in SD, starting in Jan, is the 2-year.
