So, here I am on campus during the day time. Mid-day, in fact. And boy is there a different vibe than in the evening. I'm only 31, but I feel so old right now I'm wondering where my walker is. Everything is all giggles and struts and these kids do not have a clue which end is up.
But I think my favorite part of the day so far was listening to two study group members discuss where they were going to meet to study tomorrow. Member A wanted to meet in the undergrad library so that other students wouldn't overhear them studying and thereby maybe do better than them on the exam. The exam based on the same material everyone read and/or heard in class. And not only that, Member A didn't even want to come out and say this, for fear THAT give away her secret plan to study in a cone of silence, but Member B didn't get what she was hinting at so she had to spill (while giving me a sideways glance.)
This sort of thing does not occur to evening students. At least it doesn't occur to me. I do not have time to worry about what the hell other people are doing. Furthermore, while I understand the mandatory curve, that doesn't mean I have to be an ass about it. I have enough faith in my own abilities that I don't mind sharing my outlines or whatever. If it's an essay exam, odds are I'm going to write the pants off you regardless.
It's just silly. I feel like I'm stuck at a junior high right now.

And, they're complete pigs. While we were at lunch, another group used this classroom - and left all their garbage everywhere. Because, of course, their mothers will be along shortly to pick up after them.

-water tastes horrible- like it's been sitting out getting stale.
-the upstairs shower no longer works- no water pressure or worse.
The manual is un-clear- especially on the time schedule for maintenance we have to perform. The rep gave us gifts- "gifts" that have NO info on how to use them at all. Just flyers about the gifts.
Message has been left- so far message has not been returned. We are not happy- and Saturday at midnight was the deadline to cancel the transaction.

Just got back from NYC at 3 a.m. -- and I didn't hate it! LOL, actually hubby was afraid that I would because I've complained bitterly about how so many of his transplanted NYC friends b!tch about L.A. all the time; I find that coastal rivalry tiresome and pointless. I hate that territorialism and have worked hard to not contribute to it. I've learned to just bite my tongue when people put L.A. (or any other area down). So I'm not going to argue, but I will say that the b!tching is annoying, no matter which coast you're on...
But so anyway, I really enjoyed the city, and hubby found that my outsider's perspective enriched his visit to a place he thought he knew well. And my refusal to engage in teh coastal warfare actually helped him realize how much he's come to love home too. Of course it helps that both of us agree that Barcelona is the bestest city in the world! :)

As someone who lived in NY for 15 years, the only thing I have ever complained about here is the lack of good east coast food. If I could find a good knish, Italian ice, or Sicilian pizza, you would never hear another complaint from my mouth.

See, while it's perfectly understandable that you miss good east coast food, I don't understand the complaining? This is the west coast! I call this complaining the "Amsterdam guacamole" syndrome: when I was 14 and we were living outside of Amsterdam I was really craving Mexican food so we went to this place called "Taco Tree." Needless to say, the food, particularly the guacamole, was nearly unrecognisable. I was initially upset, but then realized that I had an unrealistic expectation of getting authentic Mexican food in the Netherlands.
Since then I've tried the guacamole in Spain, France, Ireland and here in the States in New Hampshire, Georgia, North Carolina and I can't even remember where else...and OF COURSE it does not taste like that lovely green mushy stuff from the Southwest that I know and love. I've stopped expecting it to...like I've stopped ordering it! Now I enjoy exploring the local cuisine of whichever town I'm in. No more "Amsterdam guacamole" sadness!
Oh and pizza? It's a matter of taste of course, but I prefer Chicago-style. Hot dogs too. I was careful to not mention that in New York! :D Man, we had some great pub food though!

I'm going to publicly mojo lizzie for her anti-coastism stance. Yes, NY has NY pizza. Yes, CA has CA churros. Why complain about what is missing? NY isn't LA, or vice-versa.
And, good god... If you think life in Los Angeles or NYC is missing some of your favorite things, thank your choice of deity that you didn't grow up in the midwest. Before the nineties, it had little ethnic food of ANY kind. (I grew up eating la choi "stir fry" and calling it asian food. Tacos consisted of hamburger with "taco seasoning," or pepper.) But living there isn't about the availability of ethnic food, it's about the lower expenses, and the shorter commutes, and the small-town feeling. If you don't like it where you live, leave it. This reminds me of the time my family moved to suburban New York in 1971. (We were California exiles for only 2 years.) Needless to say, the food, particularly the guacamole, was nearly unrecognisable. I was initially upset, but then realized that I had an unrealistic expectation of getting authentic Mexican food in the Netherlands.
I guess my "complaint" isn't so much that I can't get the food here. That part is understandable, saddening as it might be. I lived in NY for many years and the only way we could even make mexican food is when my dad would take a business trip to LA and load his suitcase full of tortillas, chilis, etc. So, I understand that you can't always get what you want and I'm cool with that.
My complaint rather is that I'm constantly taunted with signs that say "NY PIZZA!", when they are nothing of the sort. I can't begin to tell you how many establishments I've dined at simply because they boast that they make "authentic NY pizza". I can't begin to tell you how many crap pizzas I've purchased, in the hopes that it might be somewhat close. And in that regard, I've finally given up and become resigned to the fact that, no, I'm not going to get what I consider a good pizza here, any more than someone on Long Island is going to get a Chile Relleno of the same quality I expect here.
And while I have never had the pleasure of having an authentic Chicago Hot Dog, I do also enjoy their pizza. I just consider it an entirely different beast altogether and it isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think "pizza". Likewise, I happen to like California Pizza Kitchen, especially their Thai Chicken Pizza. I just don't consider it "pizza" in the strictest sense.
Surprisingly, I have been able to get my NY hot dog fix here. Between Nathan's and Boar's Head hot dogs, that area is covered. :)

Anyone here go to a Mexican restaurant in NYC? If you have, I rest any and all cases. I don't worry about needing something specific anywhere. For the most part, if you want it so bad, you can find the seasonings to make it yourself, or seek out specialty venues. Hell, I've ordered cheesecake from NYC and it was GREAT. Expensive, but great.
My opinion: enjoy what your area is known for, and pity the people in the Midwest. Unless you're in a major metropolitan area, and even if you are - you're screwed for both coastal cuisines.

For many many years I disliked seafood in CA. Growing up going to Nova Scotia every summer I became very partial to Nova Scotia seafood. It's completely different than seafood from Maine and a whole other world from Pacific seafood.
It's only in the last few years where I have began to appriciate the seafood from its location. Shellfish still must be from the atlantic ocean or Alaska. Pacific lobster is just bleh.
But you think it's hard to find Mexican food in NY? Try Nova Scotia. They think Taco Bell is authentic.

Two of the best meals I've ever had were at Italian places...one in Sevilla, one in Paris.
The food at either was absolutely nothing like Italian food here, nothing like Italian food in New York, and definitely nothing like Italian food in Italy. One was, shockingly, like Italian food in Spain and the other like Italian food in Paris. ALL of those are the same type of cuisine in name only. The key is to get past the preconceptions that come with the name and judge based on whether it tastes good or not, not whether it fits some ideal model.
That's why I usually avoid anything claiming to be "authentic X-style", cause what you're getting is an imitation, not unique cuisine.

So....
We have a new employee who I shall refer to as P. P is not very computer savvy. Ok, no big deal. Except when she tries to blame a fried mother board on me. By ratting me out to my co-worker (not boss) because she is mad that we will not give her administrative rights to her machine (no one has them) so she can download software that we already told her we will not allow.
Luckily my boss thinks this is the funniest thing to happen in awhile.

Susan takes care of the monthly bills. (It is part of our plan to share the money responsibilities 50/50: I make it and she spends it.)
I just found out that our monthly electric bill is $150. There are only the two of us in a small condo. Bottom floor (I don't think the AC has run in a while). Our appliances (where applicable) are gas.
So what causes such an outrageously high electric bill? 12 bearded dragons in six separate terrariums, each with a flousecent UV bulb and an incandescent haet lamp - the latter being 100 watt in all but one terrarium (which has a 60 watt). These run 14 hours per day (although I am overdue to back the time down to 12 hours).
Ouch.

I survived all 3 days of reunion stuff. It was amazing how many people I did not know. I became the class fag hag on Saturday night, until one of my guys broke his leg. He was dancing and either he fell on someone or someone fell on him...never did get that straight. The person he got tangled with kept partying while her husband and I waited for the ambulance to show up so we could guide it into where he was waiting. Luckily one of our alumni is an RN and she made sure he didn't move (the drunk fool wanted to keep going).
All said and done, it was an ok weekend, but I did spend a lot of it being very uncomfortable. I did do a lot of people watching and observed that the overall group dynamics didn't change at all since high school.

I did do a lot of people watching and observed that the overall group dynamics didn't change at all since high school. At my 10 year reunion, a girl who was...um..."less than popular" in high school showed up. This was a girl who I actually slapped twice for reasons that I'm sure I felt were very justified at the time (I've never done that to anyone before or since. Just something about her...), and yet I learned in my senior year that she was planning on asking me to prom.
Well, at the reunion, she spent much of the time talking about all the wrong we did to her. She apparantly remembered every single comment ever made to her and even blamed one of my friends for her recent nose job. Well, I just learned that shortly after the reunion, she called that same friend and tried to ask him out.
Yeah, some things never change.

I changed my doctor to someone local and I'm trying to get an appointment. I'm not picky on doctors so I let Aetna pick the closest one.
Warning sign #1: Huge medical center that I'll probably have to park farther away than I live
Warning sign #2: On hold for the doctor's office forever, then get someone who asks again why I'm calling and they put me on hold again forever
Warning sign #3: No appointments on Mondays or Fridays for the next 4 weeks
Time to find some dinky practice with plenty mini-mall parking and a creepy doctor that no one wants to see.

I am finally home after what was the most terrifying car ride of my life. We were supposed to get maybe 1-3 inches of snow at the higher elevations before morning. What *actually* happened is that right at 4:45 or so the skies opened and dumped white, frosty hail, followed by gobs and gobs of snow. Right as rush hour is getting into gear, and the Seahawks have a home game on Monday night football. See if you can imagine what followed.
It took us 3 hours to travel the 25 miles home, most of that time in the first 10 -15 miles. First, we couldn't even get off campus because the buses had all just stopped. In the middle of the road, thereby blocking both lanes. We finally get out of campus by driving the wrong way through the entrance.
Meanwhile, because the crosswalk lines are completely hidden, the brain dead ave rats took that as permission to wander aimlessly about in the streets. Every block is an incline of some sort, cars are slipping and sliding, and pedestrians are wandering - leisurely - into traffic. And the ever present kamikaze bicyclists are still whizzing in between and cutting off skidding cars.
We finally got to the freeway. It was miserable but tolerable (barely) until Northgate. We had been slowly inching along fairly steadily. Then we were stopped. And stopped. Move a car length, stopped. All lanes. But when we were stopped, the wet roads would freeze over and we'd slip and slide until we got moving again. And that just kept going.
Meanwhile, of course because things are slow, people in pick-ups and SUVs are flying down the shoulder because they're extremely potent with shockingly large genitalia and therefore get to do that sort of thing.
It could have been worse - I5 southbound was completely blocked around Shoreline by an articulated bus parked diagonally across all lanes. I wondered as we passed it how many people in that back up had tickets for the game that was already half over.
I now require an adult beverage.

We're getting hit by an Arctic blast this week- supposed to get really, really cold. Merde. I really hate winter.
Prudence
11-28-2006, 12:47 AM
This is totally unusual weather for us. It hasn't stormed like this in at over a decade, that I can recall. I5 is STILL horribly backed up around northgate. All lanes closed northbound, as of 15 minutes ago. I am thinking that I might be missing work tomorrow. And school. It's the last day of one of my classes and I actually wanted to go, but at the moment it's supposed to get worse, not better, and I don't want to be driving home in the ick at 10pm. (Buses don't run up here that late.)
People are such idiots. I'd gladly take them out, except I risk injury myself, and somehow idiots always get a free pass and it's the sane person's fault.
Maybe it'll be better in the morning - but Seattle schools are already closed for Tuesday so I doubt it.

I'm so grateful she's had the last 6 weeks of really wonderful boon comfort, health and good spirits. In those last six weeks we've had some awesome phone conversations, she's so wise and funny and dammit, I'm so going to miss her. But now is the downward slide, she's tired and the pain is increasing and she is asking for peace. So our DSL modem went dark yesterday, no longer even registering power. And while we suspiciously chatted with out neighbor, who's same modem died earlier this week on a Verizon conspiracy to take out it's competitors, I had to aknowledge that the modem was no more.
On the plus side, along with our replpacement modem will come upgraded technology that will double our bandwidth, making us even faster than before.
Alas, there is also a downside - we'll be without broadband for 2-3 weeks as the upgrade takes place. We've been given dial-up access for the interim, so I'll appologize in advance for NA and I taking a pass at any of your multi-media links, vacation pics, and such for the time being - it's back to text basics for us, at least in the near future.

So...my day got off to a verrrry amusing start. I stayed amused all day.
Nickolas had spent the entire weekend teaching himself how to make balloon animals. He had one pumpkin orange "dog" he named pumpkin. He wanted to see how long it lasted. It didn't survive past 7:15am.
I was getting dressed in the bathroom because he had the girls out. I heard him screaming, "NO!!! FLUFFER, STOP!!!" I also head some odd noises. I come out to see a fat, dingy, white rat attacking a balloon animal for all she's worth. She popped it segment by segment. With every pop she would jump back from the noise, only to attack again. Poor Thudder was trying to see what her sister was doing, but every time she got close another pop wou,d go off and scare her away. It was the funniest thing I had every seen. The moment was forever etched into my memory when I looked at Nick, on the verge of tears, "She killed my Pumpkin."
After all the segments were gone, I told Fluffer that the dog was dead. She just looked up at me, climbed into my hand and was ready to go back to her cage. Thudder didn't fare as well. It took several minutes of coaxing before she was ready to show her furry face.

Not nearly as bad as the First One (http://thesuperficial.com/image.php?path=/2006/11/28/britney-spears-upskirt-vagina-01.jpg) <-- Again, not safe for work, but I think you can guess that by the subject matter (or at least I hope you can).
But neither of these shots is all that bad (especially the second one [strangely listed first]). Since when did a woman's vagina (not counting the diseased ones) become "icky"? I don't get that. So, my mom used to have this best friend - until yesterday. Best friends since college. Maybe even earlier. Forever and ever. As long as I've known her, she's been a little nutty. Religious nutty. She seems perfectly normal and then will suddenly try to convert you to her brand of religion, which is not any kind of usual flavor, but some kind of extra strict fundy variety. I think she once tried to convert my brother, who is already pretty conservative (although he is decidedly NOT pushy.)
So, my mom took the week off work and thought it would be a good time to call her (former) best friend because they could talk for a nice long time. and the conversation was mostly fine, although the conversion attempt surfaced at the end again. At some point, my mom mentioned the weather we've been having, and that we were expecting more snow that night. The weather that was actually televised live to a national audience via Monday night football.
So, later in the day, she calls back and asks, accusingly: "So, where's the snow?" And basically lays into my mother, who's extremely honest, accusing her of lying about the weather, because (former) best friend looked it up on the internet and it didn't say anything about us having bad weather. And goes on and on about what kind of person my mom is if she'll lie about the weather. And my mom is just in shock and not really believing the conversation is happening and tries to placate the psycho somehow, at which point the woman starts screaming at her: "Are you talking to me like a child?!" and goes on about how my mom has always done that to her. And so forth. Just a complete psycho.
I mean, who lies about the weather? And if they do, who cares? And, more importantly, who gets on the internet to check up on whether their best friend's weather report is accurate? And then call them back to yell at them for fibbing?
So, I asked her if I could tell this story to everyone I know, because it greatly amuses me, although it's sad that my mom no longer wants any contact with her long-time best friend.

That sucks. Hopefully they can get in contact again and her friend has an explanation (it almost sounds like a medication interaction) and an apology. Not likely. My mom wants nothing to do with her, and was telling me because my dad will forget. So if she's sick or dead or whatever, she doesn't want former friend informed. This was the abbreviated version. And it takes a lot to upset my mom.
Did she say it was okay, or did you just say "screw it" and posted anyways?

Your link was the second one. And it has a close-up. (http://perezhilton.com/topics/britney_spears/this_pains_us_20061128.php) I don't imagine you don't know this is NSFW.
Keep in mind that the gossip columnist is a gay man. And to him, female genitalia is icky. But any "ick" factor discussed by the women of LoT is probably related to the fact that vaginas are living, breathing, moist creatures, and rubbing them up against any number of foreign surfaces isn't a good idea. Yeah, that's him. What's interesting is that he's not such a looker himself. Not that he's bad-looking; he's fine. You just imagine that if someone was calling these pretty girls horses, he'd be obsessed about maintaining himself. For me, if I am out with my spouse on a date and she is wearing a dress or skirt, if she leans over and wispers in my ear that she isn't wearing any panties, that is freakin' sexy as heck.

So today I book a flight that will cost me much more Sally! I'll be flying down for the day, be on Sally's patio as originally planned, along with a whole mess of other people to say farewell as she is scattered on the beautiful hillside on their property.
A great friend to many and I was surprised to see her name in back of the Silly Symphonies book. I guess it's true, she knew everybody. Or so it would seem.

I'm very sorry to hear about Sally! I know you knew this was inevitable, but that doesn't make the loss any easier.

So, my coworker/closer flaked out today - so I get's some OT! YIPPY!
There's a hotel convention visiting too - I got asked if I'd ever been a concierge, and have received a couple business cards...
We have the swankiest holiday music here, too.
Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman - over and over, all day long :)
Ho Ho Ho!!!

Yesterday I had to go to a neighbor's house a few doors down, and remind them that we were under a red flag fire warning, and that with the Santa Ana winds, shooting off bottle rockets into the dry palm trees might not be a good idea. The grown man and his wife shooing them off from their front steps agreed that maybe it wasn't the best idea.
What ever happened to common since?

I guess common sense just isn't so common...
Were the people cleaning clothes with gasoline next to a campfire, too?

My cousin's apartment building suffered a major fire recently when roofers ran their gasoline powered generator next to the bucket of hot tar while under power lines.

I head on the news today, the Apt. building I used to live in burned down (http://www.wtop.com/?nid=25&sid=994772)yesterday. No big deal (for me) its been years since I've even driven by there but it does get your attention.
Excuse me while I go check the batteries in my smoke detectors...
Edited to add: OK, that's extra freaky, GD posted the above while I was crafting this message...

I prefer bacon to fire safety, and often disable smoke detectors during the frying of bacon, only to forget to put the batteries back in until much much later. The bacon though, is very good.

Sounds like quite the predicament (http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/zip/243229518.html). You know vodka burns with a clean flame.

I hate people who spill beer on the floor... especially when it now smells like I've been drinking.

So...I danced with Bill Nye the Science Guy on Saturday night. He didn't introduce himself that way but his name was Bill and I finally realized why he looked so familiar. (It helped that I saw him on an episode of "Numb3rs" recently.) Oh, and he's a great dancer.:)

How is he in the sack?
He spoke at Susan's cousin's graduation (from Harvey Mudd) a few years ago. Quite an interesting and bright guy!

Ooooh, test deadlines. I loved waiting until the last second to cram for tests. Nearly as much as I loved withholding copy from my editor until just before press day.:D
