Is this considered an honor or congratulatory effort of some sort?

Is it you and 400 other employees enjoying an "intimate" meeting with the boss or is it just a couple of youse?

The conference room only holds about 15 people, and I think it's a bit of an honor. It's pretty neat knowing that the GM started with the company sweeping up animal poop.

Okay, I'm going to be honest here. I have a certain song stuck in my head...

How many of y'all listen to the lyrics of a song while it's playing and hear something entirely different? I'm actually embarrassed (me of all people) to admit this:

I have a Disneyland 50th Anniversary CD that I just love and one of the songs featured on the CD is the Splash Mountain attraction theme. EVERYTIME I listen to the music of Splash Mountain (you know, the "How'dya do?" song) there is a line that I'm pretty sure says "pretty good sure as your born".

I SWEAR it sounds just like "pretty good show us your bone", which is what I always sing when the song is playing. Of course, I giggle the minute "bone" passes my lips. Heehee. Brer Rabbit said "bone".

If that's the case, and I don't think it is, then that Brer Rabbit is some disturbing, voyeuristic pervo. When I'm jostling about merrily on a flume attraction, I don't want to see random bones poking about as guests drop trou, you know? One thing you must know about me- I offend way easily. You can tell by my posts. ;) :p

Now, does anybody else swear they hear different lyrics in certain songs? Sometimes when you find out what the actual lyrics are you tend to wonder how you ever thought they could be anything different!

She had her follow-up visit yesterday with the doc. In addition to find and removing the endometriosis (this is a good thing – had there not been any would have been bad), they also found a fibroid tumor. They were able to remove most of the tumor, but not all of it (the tumor was benign). It is possible/probable that the tumor was also contributing to the cramps. It is possible that if the tumor grows back that she will have to have a hysterectomy down the road. There is also conversation of six months of hormone therapy (putting Susan into a temporary/artificial menopause), but that will be determined after a visit to a fertility specialist. Right now we are waiting for the approval to visit the fertility specialist.

Sadly, it was not me who sold the poster. Heritage Auctions in Texas (www.ha.com) had the poster in their most recent sale, with buyers premium it hammered at just over 38k. The estimate was a conservative 6-8k.

Poster prices have been going higher and higher and while I have 3 Valentino related posters, I can't imagine any of the 3 I own would come even remotely close to what The Eagle sold for. If they were to garner close to that, heck, I might be able to buy a condo with a good down payment! ;)

I'll change my comment, though, it's was not me who sold. I was not even in the run for the bidding. A friend of mine in Baltimore (who collects Douglas Fairbanks and has many beautiful posters) placed a bid of 6k on it. Needless to say, she didn't come close to getting it.

So last night J called me talking about Jeopardy. They're doing the Teen Tournament, and we always get a kick out of it, since we know most of the answers. He took a stab at the final question before it was asked, just off the topic, which was "Animals." He said "Panda." Sure enough, the answer was panda, which we got a good laugh out of.

Tonight, I'm kicking back, watching a little Jeopardy and final Jeopardy came around. Topic: "American Authors." I figured - hell, if it worked for J, I should try it, too. I say, to myself, Hemingway.. It's gotta be Hemingway. Sure enough, after the commercial break, on the board was mention of crossing the Italy-Austria border in 1918 and being there on D-Day... Hemingway.

I know I can't tell him without him me about making it up - why do these things happen in private?

During a quick stint working for a wine distributor in SoCal about 7 years ago, I learned a bit about cork vs. screw top. There's a lot of good to be said about the screw top and often - due to public misperception about the quality of a wine with a screw top - there are fantastic deals to be had on great wines.

That said, I do like corks, since there's the process of removing it. I have pleasant associations of social gatherings where I'm removing a cork, so I'm a bit sentimental.

4) If numbers 2 and 3 apply and each question you ask requires 5 minutes of preamble, then please hold still while I personally decapitate you with this spork.

So does anyone actually believe that Barry Bonds never took performance enhancing stuff? I'm not a big baseball watcher anymore (I used to be back in the days when I'd go to games with Dad). Nonetheless, I think it stinks this his record will stand along with all the others who used these drugs. Poo-heds, one and all. Bah.

Of course, since he's not passed Aaron's record yet, I'm secretly hoping he has some injury that prevents him from ever playing ball again, just shy of the record.

Ghoulish Delight
07-27-2007, 09:27 AM
I really have no idea how to feel about it. There's the whole, "everyone was doing it" argument that I instinctively roll my eyes at, but then I see the parasite reporters hounding Bonds in the locker room after a game because he didn't hit a homerun and it occurs to me that I have no concept of what it's like to live under that kind of microscope and pressure. Not that it excuses it, but it certainly contextualizes it.

Then there's the the fact that, while pure strength is certainly an aid, Bonds has put the bat on the ball 753 times. No amount of steroids can give you that skill and there will always be something to be said about the fact that he could flat out hit (I say "could" only because he no longer even tries for base hits, he's just swinging for the record now).

Alex
07-27-2007, 09:35 AM
Yes, there are.

I'm not too bothered by the use of steroids, in general I see no reason why they should be against the rules in the first place.

Odds are the steroids had little to do directly with his home run hitting. More muscle doesn't make you any better at hitting the ball perfectly. If anything it helped him play longer and more regularly than he might otherwise have done. Yet thousands of products that do that are allowed. All of the hallowed baseball records are tainted in some way or another (during Hank Aaron's era the use of amphetamines by ball players was pervasive and I'd be surprised if he didn't use them as well. Babe Ruth had the advantage of never having to play against some of the best ballplayers around.

The big reason I didn't/don't want him to break the record is because other people care and I don't want to have to listen to this debate for the next 10-12 years (at least) while we wait for Alex Rodriguez to break the record.

Though I am hoping that Griffey will experience a drug-free Bonds like late-stage burst. Three more seasons like he is having this year and he'll be 41 with more than 700 homers.

Thanks GD and Alex. I appreciate your responses. Somehow I thought that there was not any question about earlier records. Just shows my lack of knowledge on the subject. I'll leave it at that.

Alex
07-27-2007, 09:51 AM
Just to clarify, since they are illegal steroids should obviously be against the rules. I meant I don't see any baseball specific reason they should be against the rules.

The last time I tried to log on to MSN to check my hotmail account, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. I said no, later. Well, I haven't been able to access the account since. Error this, whatever.

Is anyone else having trouble? I heard that YouTube was going to be overloaded with people sending things from Comic Con. {I guess everyone else is techy savy 'cause I don't get it....}.

About the baseball~ I get that the steroids didn't give him the skill {and I know Jack about what you are talking about but I do have an opinion based on what little I do know...} but it did give him the endurance to continue to perform at his level at bat. You know, like when they need to take out a pitcher after he has spent his energy?

Compare this to old records~ they achieved these levels without them{steroids}.

Did that make sense?

Oh please oh please? I swear that particular class was the biggest collection of self-important weirdos I've ever seen. There were a number of us who were silent all quarter and blended into the scenery, but there was a much larger proportion than usual of people who were very vocal and very odd. Including the chickee whose desk set-up included no fewer than 4 cans of diet coke, the one half of the drunken twosome who always talked and gestured like she was performing on a sitcom, the one guy who was leading a 1L study section and thus felt he was on the same level as the professor, the guy who kept asking for extra credit and for people to donate their grade points to him because of his burning need to get a B+... It was just craziness. With the exception of my good buddy Chelan, I hope to never see any of them again.

Gilroy? Wow, that place sure smells like garlic. {I know, the garlic capital...} It was overwhelming. I have a very keen sense of smell and I just about died. {the only time I love my sense of smell is when I am out walking and pass rose bushes.}

I had a prank phone call at work today. A perverted prank phone call. You know, where I work I have to be 'Fast, fun and friendly'. This guys calls, asking for advice about buying his mom a birthday present. My opinion on what typs of 'panties women prefer...{yeah, well, I get asked those questions so while it was a bit odd I brushed it off....}. Then he says 'should I ask her?' and I'm like, well, duh. Well, that is where it really went off the board...Apparently she showed him what kind and they were sheer and transparent...he asks if that is wrong and I say 'Hey, it's between you and your mother, whatever'....then it levels out to a regular phone call about stuff. Until he tells me exactly what he can see and how it is making him feel...

Geezus. It pissed me off because I really didn't realize where that was going until it went there.

Mmmm...I was going to go to a show tonight, 'The Silent Comedy' {or just Silent Comedy} but I am just too tired.

Okay, funny bit...when I my boss told my relief co-worker what happened to me, she said 'Hey, I never get any calls!!!' I told her, 'Don't worry honey, I'll call you.' :p

Years ago when I worked in a lingerie department there was a man looking for a bra for his wife. We asked him what size. He held up both hands and cupped them to demonstrate. Yeah, that was helpful.

I SWEAR it sounds just like "pretty good show us your bone", which is what I always sing when the song is playing.

Funny, I always thought they sang "Pretty good, show us your Porn" - That's what I always sing when that song comes on the iPod...

Yeah - I am the Poseur of Swank right now

Screw tops are becoming big.

I have a friend who works in bottle design for a Napa winery. Apparently screwtops are considered far superior to cork but consumer perception and tradition keeps them from spreading the way many would prefer.

Watch for yourself on an upcoming episode of "Crank Yankers" :D

When I had my brief (and by brief, I'm talking two weeks, because I realized it was a massive undertaking on my part, and backed out kindly), time in the wine biz...

I was working for a distributor that dealt specifically in wines from the southern hemisphere. One partner was from Australia and the other was from South Africa. If I'm not mistaken, and I didn't look it up, I know that Australia pretty much pioneered the caps on nice wines, as well as other south of the equator wineries.

Good stuff, too.

Apparently screwtops are considered far superior to cork but consumer perception and tradition keeps them from spreading the way many would prefer.Yes. Screwtop bottles don't experience "corking," which is basically when the cork fails and allows air into the bottle affecting the taste of the wine.

A lot of the NZ wines have screwtops. I don't have a problem with them, and you never have to worry about having a corkscrew. They're also great for picnics, because you can close up and transport any unused portion without worrying about spillage.

LOl, no LB, it is for the rental company I work for.

This morning was quite the non-event. I got there at 8:00, I didn't have to be there until 8:30. Dawn was the first person I saw when I went to sit down in the hallway. She was looking at me, very smug, very pleased with herself. I went outside to wait for my moral support, in the form of a friend, E and my sister, L.

By the time they got there it was 8:30. I talked to my lawyer, who told me I have nothing to worry about, but that things might be posponed. He told me to stay where I was, out of the sight line of the other 2, and just sit tight. He was very reassuring.

He kept coming back to let me know what was going on. It seems David's paycheck stubs didn't add up. When looking at the numbers and adding them, there seems to be a $10,000 discrepancy in the numbers. Meaning there is $10,000 unaccounted for.

He then went on to say why he wanted me sitting where I was. David was making an ass out of himself, even to the point where his own lawyer thought he was ridiculous and could see that he was doing it to get to me. He was sitting with Dawn, with his arm around her, making a show of being there with her. At one point he came around the corner and seemed like he was going to say something to me, but then saw my sister and choked on his words and turned away after giving me an odd look and a nod.

So now he has to come up with an explanation about the missing money.

The best thing to come out of today was just being able to talk to my lawyer about David's statements and showing him my concerns. Mostly that he is trying to say that he is the only person bringing in income at their residence. I was told not to worry, the court doesn't care about his other expenses, only that Nick and I are taken care of.

E and I had a smoke after leaving the courthouse. We were standing in front, I made sure she was the one facing the door. Boy was Dawn shooting us some dirty looks. David walks fast and was leaving her in the dust (She was waddeling on 3 inch heels). He finally said something to her and she had to run to catch up with him.

So while nothing was resolved I feel 100xs better.

Always remember that you did nothing to cause this situation; this is their doing. You need to fight mama bear style to make sure that Nick is taken care of and his interests are looked after. Don't worry about being mean, or asking for to much. You have a lifestyle that you and Nick were accustomed to. It is up to D to make sure that Nick's life is the same as or better than. For every step I take forward I get sucker punched back. Does he have a 6th sense when it comes to my moods? He must to know when to hit me with another round of attacks.

Great MG!!! Yes, I think if he knows your social he can mess with your accounts so fix that. I heard this from someone years ago who had their phone account messed with. Hopefully they've changed this.
