Aw. I just found Glinda dead. :(
She must have had a bug or something - she was up playing and eating today, and had lots of energy. And now... ugh. I swear, that's the worst part of pet mice - they're so tiny and can have something silently wrong with them and just instantly keel over within a week or two of bringing them home. She's the third one I've had to ever do that. Because of that, I make a point to not get too attached for about a month. They're definitely not as hardy as rats.
Poor Elphaba's all alone.
I will have to go to a different shop this week and get her a new Glinda to play with, after I see that she's staying healthy.

So I went to Walmart to purchase some new socks and "underthings" as they are known to the worldly folks. I'd rather buy tampons and Vagisil then go up to the register with "underthings.
Lucky for me Walmart has a register that is automated and you just do everything yourself. So I ring it up and put in the money and the "underthings" are secured in the bag when the register freeks out and a worker comes over.
So she comes over and starts with the flirting - "Oh you broke it -giggle" - bangs on the register, then from the bag falls the "underthings" with a thud.
I don't think I will go back to that Walmart now...

I'm not exactly in a romantic mood right now. Anyone have any suggestions? My sister gave us a laser disk copy of Muriel's Wedding as a wedding present. She had never seen it or knew anything about it, but her rationale was that it had "Wedding" in the title and she knew we were into laser discs.
We sat down one evening to watch it for a "we're newlyweds; let's have a romantic evening together" night. Um, no.
Moral of the story? Don't watch Muriel's Wedding for inspiration.

This just in: My director's chair. :D I'm having a happy moment. Yay! (This will probably only last about two minutes, so bask in my glow while you can.)
Now, I just need to see if the back is embroider-able, and if so, I know who to hire. ;)
And if not, I wonder if I can have it silk-screened?

Here's an interesting event - an LA garden tour of great gardens that use at least 50% native plants: http://www.theodorepayne.org/Tour/tour.html
Oh, and Dphile: the other option available to you is to have your embroidery done on a separate piece of cloth, then sew the cloth onto the chair back (which in theory could even be done by hand if necessary). This has the added benefit of no backside of embroidery being visible.

The director's chair is SOOOOOOOOOO comfy. In fact, it's the most comfortable folding chair I've sat in. It has a bit of spring to it and excellent support, and is extra roomy.
It has a built-in side table that is super sturdy and a good place to set my camera while changing tapes or batteries. It's also large enough to hold a clipboard flat. And it has a fancy "cargo" panel on the side with zippered pouches of various sizes.
Best $40 ever. :D

Yesterday my coworker H was complaining. Both of us were allowed to hire a direct report that would be about half-time general office support and half-time our devoted minions. (mine starts Monday!) However, the director kept assigning more and more tasks to H's minion until there was no room left in the job description for assisting H. But the director refused to hire her own devoted minion.
I told my coworker that I could get the director to hire a minion, thus allowing H to reclaim H's minion that she had specifically selected and did not want to share. H said that no, the director had refused and would never change her mind. I said: watch and learn.
We had our three-way meeting yesterday afternoon and, with no difficulty at all, I manipulated the conversation to include long-term staffing plans, equity with our sub-units, gosh maybe she needs some dedicated support...and presto-chango, new position to support director is authorized.
But it doesn't stop there - I also got myself promoted to a manager-level position (with raise, of course), effective immediately. This makes me the same grade as the evil boss at my old job - a fact which gives me immense satisfaction.
That's two significant promotions in six months. Can't get a legal job to save my life, but I can sure climb the ladder where I am.

There was something wrong with the world today. I saw at least 5 car accidents on the freeway today. 95% of the people were going 55 mph and under. 5% were going 85 and over which was interesting for a bit there. There was serious madness on the highway today and I don't think it was even a full moon.

She generally works here on weekends and has a tattoo from when she got divorced. I forget the story about the tattoo except that it meant she wasn't married. And it was an excuse to look at her butt (tattoo to the left of where a "tramp stamp" would be).

So, we went to Wendover, NV (http://wendoverfun.com/main_non_flash.htm) for a while yesterday. It's like Vegas, but not. Anyway...
Had some tummy troubles after lunch (go figure... I think the culprit was my eating the bell peppers despite knowing better with my stomach), so I didn't feel like getting in on the poker tourney. So, we sat down to the blackjack tables.
Now, I generally try to be scientific about the whole process, but in the end, I know I go on 'gut' as much as anyone else. I was at a bad table, or the mojo was bad... it was hard to tell. I couldn't settle down and made some bad calls that I knew better than to hit on. Finally, things settled down, we had a good groove going, even though I didn't move from my position, which I rarely do well at - seat 2. Did better when no one was in front of me, and yet didn't move over... didn't want to f with the groove.
Then, the creepiest mofo I've come across in years plants himself into the first position. Chills up my spine creepy, my friends. I played poorly, but honestly, I felt like the life had been sucked out of me. He left and I made it all back, and J was ahead, so we left when it looked like things were about to go downhill.
All in all, not too bad. Trip paid for itself, and we killed a day doing something we both love, playing cards.

The Boy has a busy last few days of vacation coming up. He has been staying with his dad this week. I am picking him up Thursday after work and taking him to The Old People's house. Mom has been pitching a bitch about not being able to see him (she sees him more than once a week). She wants him to spend the night and color eggs with her on Friday.
He and I were invited to the in-laws to color eggs on Saturday. It should be fun, at least we have always enjoyed it in the past years.
Sunday, Easter, we are headed South for our Easter Basket Brunch.
Stupid question about Sunday. With it being Easter, and our "brunch" ressies not until 12:45, I am going to have to feed him at some point, on our way down. Do you all think that Denny's will be open Easter morning? I know, why Denny's? Well, the one off of Lyon's exit isn't too bad and Boy likes the Moons Over My Hammy sandwich (although he asks for bacon instead of ham).
How crowded does DLR typically get on Easter? We have never gone on Easter before.
Yes, Denny's will be open.

More puppy pics! I got an email today saying that she's going to mail out our AKC/UKC papers so it looks like we're OFFICIAL!
We'll know at 6 weeks which one of the girls will be ours. Here they are at 4 weeks...

So the doc says that I have a full-blown sinus infection. Swell. I'm armed with antibiotics and working from home today - hopefully will be able to rest a bit and fight this monster off.
A little more unsettling - though I'm trying not to look at it that way - is the abdominal pain near my waist on the right-hand side. They tested my kidneys and they're fine; next up is an ultrasound on Friday to test my ovaries. I'm no stranger to ovarian cysts - I hope that's what this is (and nothing worse) but it doesn't necessarily feel the same. I admit that I'm a little scared, but it's much better to check it out than to ignore it and pretend it will go away.

Doooooooooooooooooooood, there was waaayyy too much confusion over cap & gown rentals than there needed to be. Oy, turns out, I can show up (quite literally, apparently) the day-of the ceremony to get my cap & gown rental taken care of. I don't know why no one told me all the other times I called and emailed, but I finally got the straight dope from the guy in charge of all that stuff.

I've decided I must purchase my ancestoral home (http://www.smithpropertiesinc.net/content/listdetail.html/52064655?proppos=48&ag_id=3199852&pageclicked=5&RowCount=58&startpos=41&endpos=50&ids=58783917,48404991,48405472,45464976,45465103,5 6044865,49173207,52064655,52832362,45989035&propertyCount=58). One of my clients lost two of their pets. A beautiful black cat named Sheba (which I'm very sad about) and their pet scorpion (which I couldn't be happier about).
I hated spending the night in a house with a scorpion in the next room.

We sooooooo don't care which one. If you look at the pics, the male is on the right side of the middle photo. He has a fuller coat than the two girls (hence the males are usually the show dogs). The girls are pictured together in the bottom photo.
Now that we know we're definitely getting one, we can start the real countdown. Four weeks and counting! The girls were already fighting over which color collar to get. And toys...apparently you can never have enough puppy toys. :D
Thank you all for kind words :) She sends weekly updates, so I'll have more photos next week.

How can it be your ancestral home when it was built in 1950? I like how is only has 2 bedrooms but a 3 car garage. That says something.:D

Not sure where they got the 1950 thing becuase my Dad lived there long before then, with my great-grandparents right next door. It doesn't say it but there's a chicken coop too :D

12 year old girls are mean. And it doesn't help that my 12 year old is a drama queen. It's going to be a long trip through Jr. High and High School at this rate.

I can tell you that 11 year old(ish) boys aren't much better. You either follow or are subject to bullying. Boy is not a follower.

I just came home with a Roomba. The one main disadvantage to hardwood flooring is the constant mess from numerous pets. So, now I have something to keep things nicer without having to break out the vacuum all the time.
Now, I just need a robot to do other things around the house.

So apparently my job description is changing again. I no longer recruit, but I am being taught how to handle the agent files because our Aliso office manager is out on disability and we won't know for how long until her appointment a week from now. When I'm not in Newport, I'm covering for her absence and catching up on the file work from the days when a regular receptionist covers the Aliso office.
Interesting.
This can be good or not so good, we'll see how things develop. I'm leaning towards "good". Especially with sales production starting to rise these days.

Eeek. I hope it's something minor so that it can get better. Definitely better to get things checked out.

Bye bye scorpion (I kind of feel the same). Astral hugs to the kitty.
I just came home with a Roomba.
We have had those. I have too much carp on the floor to use them regularly. On the bright side, it didn't disturb the cat or either dog. They would sit and watch it but not be freaked out by it.

Seriously, my cat doesn't seem to mind the vacuum cleaner. Pull out a broom, on the other hand, and he's outta there. Makes me suspect some foul play with a broom - not sure why, though, considering Markus lived in a shelter for over a year.

How are the cats reacting to it?Well, for the 5 minutes that it ran during the demo, they jumped. (It was speaking and showing off its features. Kinda freaky, really.) It's now in the charging dock, and they keep sniffing at it and then looking up at me with really pissed off expressions.
you must let me know what you think of it.
do you have carpet? or mostly hardwoods? We have laminate wood flooring. I'm hoping it lives up to its expectations or I'm taking it back.
Besides kitty litter, we also have bunny bedding, bird food, and fur tufts on the floor daily. If it picks up those things, I'll be very happy.

1. Are those puppies some kind of polar bear mix? I didn't know ursine and canine could mate successfully!
2. LPSE, oh sweetie, when will it stop? This may be more difficult while you're grieving ... but when it comes to your own health, please resist the natural urge to be frightened. Your attitude can work wonders, and it's easier to influence your own health before the influence of a formal diagnosis works its will on your mind. Think healthy. Be confident of health. To the extent you can.
Good luck and much love from these quarters.
