I got a new phone today as well as a new number. Now NA needs to call everyone in her phone list and tell them about the new number.
Joke 1: By the time she finishes, the phone itself will be outmoded
Joke 2: That's ok, she calls everyone on her phone list once a week anyway
Sarcastic comment: Ah, the trials and tribulations of having soooo many friends.
:)
Factoid - NA's number is the first number I've called hundreds of times but never, ever memorized.

We have evil vending machines here at my work too. The old one was always full of snacky goodness, but wouldn't take money. If you put a dollar bill in, it would spit it out and tell you to use exact change; if you put coins in, they would just drop down in to the coin return. The new machine works just fine, but never has anything in it.

I'm starting to question the quality of Henry's Markets' produce. Sure, they still have the best avocado prices going, but I was there the other day and could not, for the life of me, find any zucchini, and their avocados were ridiculously overripe. I remain unimpressed with their meats.
Granted, I've been totally spoiled by the mere existence of Bristol Farms, but that's more for gourmet prepared foods, etc. Henry's I'd look to for cheap abundant produce.

Down to one issue/343 words left! Of course, it's the weird issue that involves something we didn't cover that we're supposed to analogize to something we DID cover and I don't know what that is. Or, rather, I suspect what it is, but I don't know how to make the analogy. Grrr. Still, I'm definitely on the home stretch. Both questions need some final editing, but at least it looks like I'll have something to turn in tomorrow. Of course, it's all crap, and I'm likely to repeat my C performance from admin law and tank any hope of decent employment post graduation, but there's not a lot I can do about that now.

Work was off, even my body, it felt 'off'. Like it is also out of sync with the rest of me. It hurt just to stand.

Oh, and I agree with GC, don't let your fellow co-workers drag you down. One yesterday really yanked me and today she wasn't there. That was good. I did vent to a couple of people {probably not a great idea but if it gets back to her, what can she say?} adding to it, 'I'll get over it. I'll let it pass. Difficult issue handled by deflection! Rather than coming up with the tricky argument against the claim, I suggested that we strategically concede that point, and came up with a damn good argument why. Evading the question! This must demonstrate that I'm ready to graduate...

Last time I visited with NA I told her of our goings on, and she said I should post more often in Soo... so here goes:
Our pup of 14 years was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis (http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/laryngeal.htm)a few years ago. It didn't bother her until this summer while she was in Colorado. She had an attack where she couldn't breath. With this condition the harder you breath, the more the voice box closes off, and the worse it gets. A viscious cycle is started that is hard to stop. Watching this happen to your dog is terrifying.
At 14, we know she doesn't have alot of time left, but I didn't want her to go this way, so we looked at our options. It turns out that there is a surgery that they can do to help the condition, called laryngeal tie-back surgery. I felt that she still had a good enough quality of life that it was worth the risk.
We took her to VCA All Care (http://www.vcaacarc.com/)where they did the surgery. I was really impressed with the place. Everyone was friendly and understanding. In the waiting room, someone actually came by to check to make sure you were being helped, and would go back and check on the status.
She had her surgery yesterday morning, and the surgeon took the time to talk to me about her and how it went, I wish regular doctors had his bedside manner, it was impressive and comforting. The surgery went well. I have been allowed to visit her anytime we want. Her breathing sounds 100% better, and we hope to have her back home in a few days.

Neither. He saw Nickolas putting down the garage door yesterday and noticed that he didn't press 0. From what I was told he asked about it, but no info was given.
Legally, since he is still paying the house payment (the one thing he will pay, all $850 of it) he still has rights to the house. My lawyer told me it was a good idea to change things more to prevent Her from trying to come in. He still has a mess of stuff in the garage and back yard, and a few minor things in the house. I have told him I will work on getting the stuff in the house gathered for him. The stuff in the garage he can get, but only when I am there. I have already pulled the stuff out that I need to keep to run the house.
We had a civil conversation last night, he wanted me to give him the house payment bill and the papers from Nick's daycare. I told him they would be in Nick's overnight bag on Friday.

Ugh - my mother's having a retirement party in September. Yay - finally. But getting Maddy and I there sucks. Airfare to Reno - cheapest is $400 for both of us. Rental car - get this - cheapest I can find is hotwire for $128.61 for the weekend. Directly the rental car places are asking $78/day economy. Plus parking here in San Diego is another $35. Plus gas for the rental. Ugh. All for an hour or so party.
It's all this or a 10 plus hour drive each way. Actually longer going up because we can't leave until after Maddy's out of school on Friday which means super sucky traffic all the way up the 15 until you get to 395 pratically.
I'm going of course, already bought the tickets, just lamenting how much it sucks to come from BFE. And why is Reno always so flipin expensive? Oh and there are maybe two non-stops a day the rest are all connections as well. Joy Joy Joy.

Studies show that more than half of all murders and car accidents happen within a week of a full moon. This is such a well studied phenomenon that hospitals staff emergency room accordingly.

"Within a week" is reasonably interpreted as including one week before and one week after the full moon. This is a two week time span. Full moons are just over four weeks apart. The two week time span around the full moon would represent about 1/2 of the time (actually, just under) in a lunar cycle, so it sounds about right :)

When I got home and parked last night I suddenly had a spider in my face. Well, actually it was running up the windshield but it was right there and for a moment I wasn't sure if it was inside or outside. I got out of the car and saw the spider hovering up above in the rafters. We had both been taken by surprise. This morning there was a web spun all the way to the roof of my car. And of course backing out my car destroyed it.
I don't like to live with spiders but their webs can be so beautiful. Tonight there was no sign it was ever there.:(

Talk about late to the party... But I have never been a really big Bon Jovi fan (most likely because my friends in high school were really into the hair bands and I got OD'ed on all of them). But today I was listening to the song "Living on a Prayer" on the radio and actually listened to the lyrics this time. It's a freakin' good song. Sad, but hopeful. Cool song.

GC i love "Livin on a Prayer" it was the first video on MTV that i saw of Bon Jovi's believe it or not. Plus it is my theme song. Seems like every month just getting by just like Tommy and Gina. I love the lyrics. Bon Jovi writes lyrics i can definitely relate to. :) And get this my mom even own mother loves their songs and knows the words and she sings Bon Jovi at times lmao....so the band really does bridge the generation gap. Now to coropt my nephews lmao...
GC glad you listened to teh song for the lyrics and you stated the obvious. I think the album that really had me helped me thru and yet hurt alot was These Days it was a really depressing album as far as lyrics go.

Since my alarm decided to go off at that exact moment I now get to remember everything in stunning detail. My biggest fear (esp since Nickolas is on visitation right now) is that David won't bring him back, or once he brings him back he will take him from me. The other part had to do with material possessions and David just trying to hurt me (mentally) in every way he could.

They'll hold plenty of Melons.Well, my store just started selling them last week, and already they seem to be out. I hope they order more. I only bought one. I hope they learn to pack them well.
I have one of those mesh ones I used to use, but the one time I took it into the Publix here they just about freaked out when I handed it to them. I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Plus it's difficult to pack and awkward to carry. This is much better. Now I need to get a few more.
Sometimes you don't have a choice though. You could always reuse the plastic bags. That's what I've been doing when I go to the farmer's market. I have been using my own bags at the grocery store too! Does yours give you a credit? Mine gives 5 cents a bag. I use my Wegmans bags at the Hannaford. :DThe ridiculousness yesterday was that all my items fit in the Green Bag. Stupid guy put two items in a plastic bag, and then put that bag inside of the Green Bag. If truly green, the bag should have spit it out, but I guess that feature would make the bag cost more than 1.50, huh?
Didn't check my receipt to see if I got a credit. I don't think I got one.
What were the two items? Grocery clerks are trained that certain items are supposed to be bagged separately even if they all end up in the same bag.

Yep. I never did it, but I have friends who called in regularly. It got you off the phones and full pay if you were lucky enough to be on a jury. You just had to make sure you didn't do it too often or it could be considered work avoidance.

Baseball-shmaseball... I've decided that I can watch a game on TV if I just need background noise, but otherwise, it's the most boring thing ever captured with a lens. On the other hand, there are few things I love more than going to a baseball game. I figure it's the entire experience. I'm interested in the sport enough to know what's going on, but the peanuts, the one hot dog I'll eat all year, the beer, the friends, the loud guy that's inevitably nearby... They make baseball great.

Even supermarket California rolls can be great if you're REALLY in the mood for sushi at 9:30 at night.
But having spent nearly $100 on groceries as a result of going to the market for late-night sushi, I'd have done better to go to a fancy sushi place for a spider roll. Cheaper.
But then I wouldn't have plastic bags ;)

Erica, I'm right there with you. To watch a game on TV, I would have to care about the outcome, which I've never been able to do.
Going to a game, however, makes it an EVENT. The whole ambiance of the experience is wonderful. All those things you mention, plus there is nothing like the slow transition from evening, through magic hour and into night, all outside the magical cocoon of the stadium lights.
I don't know if that affects anyone else, but that's always been my favorite part.

Both of the things that I woke up at 5am thinking about ending up being nothing. My gut was telling me to check up on the car insurance for 2 reasons. One, I needed to find out if He had cancelled the insurance on any of his vehicles and 2, to make sure that he didn't add the new car they just bought to my policy. No to both!!!
The other was due to a notice from my finance company saying that they never received my proof of insurance on the boat. I called that insurance company and they are faxing it over right now.

Wow. I just received the results of my yearly review. Not only was it a positive review, I received a raise that we well beyond (read: double) what I was anticipating. It was a bigger raise even than when I received a promotion last year. I was hired at a bit below market rate and have continued to lag behind in the ensuing years. This year the powers that be decided I deserved to be brought up above the curve. That means that I received not only the raise that HR determines based on the result so of the review, but extra percentage that's at the discretion of my department heads. There is only a limited amount of discretionary bonus that each department has to spread around, and from what I've gathered, what they gave me is the lion's share (if not all of) that.
This of course puts pressure on me to continue to deserve that, but it also is quite the motivation to actually seek out the opportunities to show that I do. I'm kinda giddy right now.
Oh, and if I did indeed get as big a chunk of the bonus money as I think, I'm going to be doing a lot of deflecting of, "Are you as pissed about your raise as I am?" that people like to do. I hate that.

Second, really? In pretty much every corporate job I've ever had discussing personal salary, raises, and bonuses is just about the biggest taboo going. For all the conversation about pay I've ever had with coworkers you'd think we were all volunteering our time.

Everywhere I've ever worked it's taboo to talk about salary/raises which makes sure that everyone hints around about it. And usually by the end of the day you know who got what basically.

Second, really? In pretty much every corporate job I've ever had discussing personal salary, raises, and bonuses is just about the biggest taboo going. For all the conversation about pay I've ever had with coworkers you'd think we were all volunteering our time. That's my philosophy and my pat response any time someone bugs me about it is, "It's my personal policy not to discuss it either way." But there are a handful of people in my extended department that constantly convince themselves to be poorly done for and insist on bitching to me about it. No one's gone into specifics, but they make it known whether they're pleased with their review results or not (while regularly ignoring advice on how to benefit themselves by doing what it takes to make their work visible to the decision makers). The people who do that tend to be the habitual job-hoppers, which is a common species in my niche-tech industry.

So, I'm about to do this volunteer thing down in Newport. Yay. I get to sit in traffic.
Everywhere I've ever worked it's taboo to talk about salary/raises which makes sure that everyone hints around about it. And usually by the end of the day you know who got what basically.
Again, that's completely different from any experience I've ever had. No bitching (maybe about how pay and bonuses are structured in general but not about amounts), no hinting, no gloating.
Our semi-annual bonuses were received in the last paycheck and if I hadn't received one I'd have had no idea.
You must have different responsibilities as an administrative assistant than I ever had since I was never privy to such information. It wasn't even in the paper personnel files.
Besides, if everybody knows what everybody got, how can management lie to everybody that they got an above average raise/bonus.

I don't really have any qualms mentioning my salary to friends if it comes up, though I'm unlikely to bring up the topic myself.
Coworkers is a different story. While I personally don't give much thought to comparative salary, I know too many people who put a ton of stock in it and would get bent out of shape if they were to know that they got a smaller piece of the raise pie because I got a larger one. So I simply don't discuss it at all because I want no part of their drama.

As the fiscal person, I know what everyone makes, and I know that I'm on the bottom of the pile. It kind of sucks, actually, that the receptionist makes considerably more than the "fiscal administrator." I'm have to account for tens of millions of dollars down to the penny, and I make considerably less than the person responsible for ordering the pens and copy paper and serving coffee to visitors.
Not that I'm bitter or anything. (4.5 months....)
ETA: it's been published on campus that we've been allotted 4.5% per person for merit increases this year. Except in our unit, where they decided that 2% is a "substantial" increase, and they're going to save the rest of our allotment to award the "truly deserving" - which means it's going to the Queen Bee's chief fluffer, who has already had three substantial (15%+ each time) increases in the past year. AND, I know that they plan to request 15K/year additional funds for my replacement.
Again, not that I'm bitter...

Of course not. Now every HR he hits will be the new world record.
A new MLB record, but not a world record. He has 112 more to go to reach that point.
But at least we're on the downside now. And teams can go back to treating him like the player he is worth. It will be interesting to see if anybody wants to spend money on him next season.
