Mucho Tequila - Ursula 1000
Dueling Banjos - Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandel (from Deliverance)
Copacabana (Remix) - Barry Manilow

Whee! In today's episode of cutting it awfully damn close, my tax return posted at midnight - with the final payment on our May WDW trip due today. After the cutting my salary because I won't work 60 hours in the office as receptionist incident, followed by the getting hit by a metro bus incident, followed by the raging infection medical bills, followed by the days BT had to take leave without pay due to said infection, our savings account was pretty well drained. And I really didn't want to have to charge it to the credit card I've been trying to pay off. And I didn't have to!

I've decided it's a sign that we really as supposed to go.

Purdy car!!

Nick & I just got home from a morning trip to DLR. The ride down was a bit harry. Right before the 14 merges into the 5, CHP passed us, hit his lights and started doing a round robin to slow us down. We were completly stopped while they placed flares, a truck lost a tire (looked like the whole wheel) and ended up spinning out and hit another car head on in the center divider. There were 2 sheriffs and 3 or 4 CHP on the scene, with more showing up as we sat. (it was raining pretty hard at this point) A bit past that I saw something weird going on, again in the fast lane. Luckily I was going slow enough to react. There was another car that had spun out and hit the center divider head on. There were chunks of the divider in the middle lane of traffic and bits of car every where. It looked like it may have caught fire when it hit. Only thing on scene were 2 fire trucks, sitting on the right shoulder. Just past that mess, again I see something strange in front of me, a white pickup sitting partway in the fast lane and across the next lane, spun out with a flat tire and 2 other cars sitting on the right shoulder with various dents. After that it was just another spun out car on the other side of the center divider. This was all before we go to the 210.

Today I managed to clean out another whole portion of my future office (yay!) which makes almost 1/3 of it cleaned out and organized.

I also finally hung decorative item #2 - after only 2 years here. The Monet print went above the piano a few months ago, and tonight I hung my limited edition sericel thingy in the hallway where I can see it when I come downstairs. It's old school Mickey and Minnie giving each other gifts. And the mat perfectly matches my new couch, although that's entirely by accident.

Today was a "Why did I bother" day.

I have this week to do a bunch of stuff. It's all doable but will take some dedication. How much did I get done today? Not a whole lot. Why?

Lyra had to go to the vet. Her left face was super swollen and she needs to have an abcessed tooth extracted IF she can survive surgury. I'll know tomorrow morning after the tests come back. She's an old girl.
The blinds I bought yesterday were the wrong size so I had to exchange them at Home Depot. The new ones I got will fit - once I carve out pieces of the window molding to hold the brackets. The new blinds a wood and have larger brackets than the old ones.
The washer didn't like the load of sheets I put in it - Load Exceeded - and I couldn't get it to reset for a long while. Now I have we soapy clothes in a bucket in the kitchen.
I was supposed to get a check to my boss but it was in my car which I told Chris to take today since he had to drive and his car was vandalized on Saturday night and has a broken side-view mirror.
It was too we today to weed or plant the garden and the new plants I bought. They need to go into the ground before Sunday.
I have 7 pairs of unmatched socks
I'm totally disoriented due to staying out too late and the time change.WTF is going on?

Soooo.... Now that I'm on upper campus I get to hear and see all the festive student demonstrations! Although if they really want to get their message across they need to learn how to use the megaphone properly. Judging from the group assembled, however, it's way more about a pathetic attempt to pretend it's 1960-something. Yay whatever!

Is there any part of that sentenance that says "please email us back to ask us where you reply is"?

I've always found "barking spiders" and other euphemisms to be disturbing. I really hope that no creature makes the sound of a fart when trying to communicate.

Can't we just call a fart a fart and a f.ck a f.ck? (Apparently not.)

So.

Here's my unbelievable report. The promotion I was interviewing for is no more. The woman who was retiring has decided to stay. Sound crazy? Well, it's because her husband unexpectedly passed away last weekend. Two days before the final interview for her replacement.

The world is filled with randomness. I feel so sorry for her that I really don't care about the promotion. Her husband was retired, and they loved to travel. I can't imagine having it all set that you can finally spend all the time in the world with the one you love, only to lose him at the last minute.

So, things aren't changing for me for a while yet.

The other crazy thing is that a woman who used to work at another branch (but left months ago due to cancer) died on the same day as that other woman's husband. The same bloody day.

I was applying for her position as well, just in case. Ran-dom-ness.

What is up with this stuff all seeming to happen at once??

I mean yesterday my boyfriend called me up to say that one of his coworkers committed suicide and that he left his note by his desk at work, yet no one noticed till yesterday. (My boyfriend noticed he wasn't there since Monday but he thought oh he must not be feeling well. He knew he had just broken up with his girlfriend and thought maybe he had decided to take a couple of days off. But then the police showed up at his office and they were checking this guys desk where under some papers was a suicide note.) And then my brother who is an insurance adjuster had a man commit suicide by driving his car off a cliff. It is all so incredibly sad. So much death.....

I forgot to check my mail from Saturday until we got home Sunday...I found a letter addressed to me from Arkansas. I know no one in AK plus they spelled my name wrong (I don't care how you pronounce it, as long as it is spelled correctly), but they knew me well enough to have my address. It was a letter telling me that David is having an affair with the widow. I had to laugh. Who ever wrote it does not know me very well at all. The only people that came to mind were 2 of Jimmy's cousins, who blame her for his suicide. My response was to call her and tell her that since she was having an affair with David she needed to fix me dinner. Dinner was mighty tastey!!! I told her that had I known that is what it took to get food, I should write a letter like that every week.

The kicker on the letter was the person who wrote it said I could always email them and ask any questions I may have...the email is cant_prove_its_me@yahoo.com. Too bad for them it had the opposite affect of what they were trying for.

It's weird to come in to work and the first thing you hear is, 'Sheila wants to wash everyone's feet for them today.' Although tempting, I don't think I'll be taking part in the festivities. :D

So, this is the work news thread, yes? If it's too mundane to give it it's own thread, it goes in the Soooo thread.

Had a talk with the big ol' boss today. She said I did fantastic in the interview for the supervisor position that no longer exists. BUT, I didn't beat the outside guy. Oh well. She said some wonderful things about me but said it came down to experience.

She said I "did very well with what I had" and then continued to say how great I was (she used words like maturity and poise, boy have I fooled them) and what a big future I had. She then urged me to continue my schooling because she saw me taking over everything eventually. She offered her considerably large influence to help me with costs etc.

So yeah, I'm feeling pretty pumped. She also said I'm definitely in the running for the full time slot with minor managerial duties at the Main, which obviously leads to greater things down the road. That would start in July...

It's a good day

On Monday I bought tickets to the three Mighty Ducks playoff games. On Monday I was told that the Round 1 Home Game 1 would take place on 4/27. I clarified that it was taking place that day because I could not attend if it was taking place on a Tuesday. Apparently Home Game 1 was never scheduled for 4/27 and the lady who was helping me was full of it. Home Game 1 is scheduled for Tuesday 4/25. I can't go.

Sell the tickets you say? Can't do that either. They are at WillCall and Ticketmaster is not allowing name changes on playoff tickets. Why didn't you have them emailed you ask? Ticketmaster said game 1 tickets could either be shipped via UPS for $100million or picked up at WillCall.

So I say.. Down with Ticketmaster! Outrageous fees. They run boxes offices everywhere leaving few other options to buy tickets.

No, but he's not exceptionally tall himself- average height. I'll be sure to ask him. He said that he didn't realise who Adam was until Bono walked up to him. Surprisingly, no one was bothering him at the time, though people did start milling about when they realised who was there.

Not too long ago he met a nice older couple- they wanted to buy a piano, but they had to get their son, who was waiting outside, to approve of the piano before they bought it. The son turned out to be Jack Black, who Kelly said was very nice and actually seemed kind of shy.

I am freaking out about how much homework I have to do. There is no escaping it, so I'm allowing myself short little jaunts of LoT time in between... um... assignments that are shorter, and everytime I feel like I got somewhere...

OH damn....

I just feel guilty now.

The Vet called about Dexter's bloodwork. He's a perfectly healthy 9 year old boy......except for some dental issues.

So, he will get his teeth cleaned when we get back from Coachella. Then maybe he won't have stinky breath. Stinky cat breath is not as cute as it should be.

But, after his steroid and antibiotic shots yesterday, he's feeling much better already. Good boy!

Well, the best part is, it's over! I'm totally done with that class! Yay!

I felt like a complete goober. However, the "judges" were very nice. They did what they were supposed to do, and pointed out one or two things for us to work on, and then gave compliments. I'm sure they could have given us more things to work on, but the theory is that they're not supposed to totally crush us. However, that doesn't always happen, and some panels have at least one major jerk. This one was basically all good, though.

The funniest thing is that all three said something about me being "poised." One said I had "presence," was "polished," and that if I was thrown by anything my face didn't show it. Another said I appeared fairly poised and comfortable with my material, and that I didn't have any distracting mannerisms. I was praised for my speed and manner of delivery.

This is a totally new development. Usually I look like a scared bunny about to flee, talk waaaaaay too fast, and telegraph everything I feel via inadvertant facial expression. Lack of poise and polish, not to mention visible lack of confidence, have consistently been my weaknesses throughout speech, debate, etc... I suppose they're useful skills for an attorney to have, and perhaps some of ones it's less easy to teach/learn, but I am just totally shocked that I picked them up somewhere.

I suppose I should stop doubting myself and accept that this is yet another sign that I'm headed in the right direction (professionally). This is unlikely to happen, of course.

But, again -- it's over! Yay!

Today marked the end of my 3rd week of work. After the firing and layoffs yesterday I felt a bit shakey today. My paranoia was totally unfounded. My boss is happy with the way I have been taking care of the front office. She likes that she can come to me with a problem/puzzle and that I can quickly come up with the resolution. She also likes that I can remember seeing different company names and immediatly come up with the matching file. Most of the vendors that have called are now calling for me, using my extension and enoying that not only am I able to help them, but also know what they are calling about. I am still having my normal work week sleeping issues, but no where near like I had at SBC, my work does not haunt my dreams.

The people who know me laugh when they ask what I like most about my new job and my reply is that I can go to the bathroom whenever I want.

So....Earlier this week at work we got some HR publication that included among the other usual stuff, a page on "acceptable" work attire. As iread down the do's and don't's I realized that while there were the usual generic admonishions about wearing "message" shirts - nearly half specificly addressed female attire. No mini-skirts, no plunging neck lines, etc.

Clearly boobs and legs should be excluded from the workplace, but I wonder why there where similar admonisions about tight pants and package display. I guess, a nice ass doesn't distract the office as much as clevage does? Or is it important to mask the femaleness of the work environment?

So, the worst nightmare of my job came very close to becoming a reality tonight.

I have a pair of greyhounds I'm sitting. One is 15 and having trouble with his back legs. I had a funny feeling that something was going to happen while their owners were gone and I was right.

I went over tonight to see them and the older boy couldn't get up at all. He didn't seem like he was in any paing, but he has completely lost the use of his hind legs. I couldn't get in touch with the owners at the 33 numbers they left me but, I had made SURE I had a neighbors number before they left. Thankfully, they answered the phone and came over to help. They ended up taking the dog to an emergency vet and I'm waiting to hear what happens next. At least I didn't find the dog dead at home. That is my worst fear. But, this was not all that comfortable of an experience.

Aren't you just mad about figs??? (Sorry, just watched Grey Gardens for the first time last night. I'm too intrigued by Little Edie.)

The tree I saved (pruned viciously, dug up and replanted) when I moved here bore for the first time last year. This year I'm expecting big things. It looks very vigorous this year and is already covered in big fuzzy leaves.

The doggie is still at the vet. He parents are on their way home from SF now and will go immediately to the vet. The extreme amount the dog has deteriorated just since Thursday makes me thing it's time to make the tough decision. I feel really bad for the parents. Mom's had a rough time lately and starts Chemo for breast cancer tomorrow. I don't envy their position at the moment, but I do think it is time to let the big boy have some peace. Apparently, sis younger sister who is suddenly all alone in the house barked for most of the night. Poor girl. It's a sad, sad situation.

On the brighter side of news. I thought of a good way for people to get exercise in our country. Pedal powered PlayStation 2's and internet hookups. You hook up your PS2 and internet to a stationary bike. As long as you pedal, you can stay on. If you stop, no PS2 and internet for you.

You know what elevators need? Buttons that can be 'unpressed'. Say you hit the wrong button, hit it again and it unselects that floor. That way, if you get on an elevator and some idiot has pressed all the floors, you can undo their sh!t.

One step forward, two steps back.

So, my dad's been home for almost two weeks, and doing well. While recovery from the surgeries has been slow and painful, he's progressing far better than initially expected. The diabetes is under control with a single daily insulin injection, oral meds, and diet control. All is well, right?

Well, he started to have abdominal pain last night. And his blood sugar was way high this morning. So my mom dragged him to the emergency room...where they diagnosed him with gall bladder disease (seemingly unrelated to anything else). He's not exactly the standard demographic for this, the most common sufferers being people who fit the "Five F's" (Female, Forty to Fifty years old, Fertile, Fat, and Flatulent...nice eh?). He's just one of the lucky ones.

So right now they're making him take a radioactive tracer so they can get a look at the gall bladder. If it's not too inflamed, it's a simple matter of laproscopic surgery to remove it. Relatively easy. If it is inflamed, lapro is too risky and they'll have to make a full incission. He does NOT need that at this point.

Sigh.
