Goonie- that stinks. I hope your tomorrow is better.
NA- poor Thurston. I hope he heals quickly and fully. Poor little guy.
I love and hate this time of the year. Sure the holidays are over (there are advantages to that) and there aren't any real big days off, but that's ok. I don't work in an office, so don't get paid holidays; I do get official holidays off from school, but that's not the victory that it used to be. It's kind of nice to be back in a quiet part of the year, but it's dark and cold and I get depressed.

Charles was meowing in the dining room last night. I went out to investigate and saw both he and Aleister peering through the dining room blinds. I went to the kitchen door to look out and came face to face with a very large raccoon. He saw me and ran, but got stuck trying to fit through the wrought iron gate. Damn wildlife!

Their are a chain of stations across the country called "Jack" and a few called "Dave" (and I think a couple called "Jane"). I am not sure if they are all owned by one company, but they all have the same concept and probably use the same consultant.
There are also a bucket load of "Star" radio stations, "Kiss" (known as KIIS here in LA), "Magic", etc.

This morning I discovered that the distant sound of machine gun fire sounds just like the last gurgling moments of coffee brewing in a drip coffee maker - then again, maybe I just needed a cup.
I hear machine gun fire every day (we live two blocks away from an Army Support Training Center) so I'm going to have to say you just needed a cup.
To me it sounds more like a car driving over a rumble strip.
And it is amazing how quickly it just fades away into standard background noise.

01-17-2008, 01:31 PM
Ooh! Kitty is doing much better. I don't know if I posted anything about it, but he didn't have mites. He did have continuing problems with his allergies. A combination of ear cleaning solution, antibiotics, two amateur cat wrestlers and a diet of duck and peas and no more sneaked food seems to have him in good spirits. The ears are slowly getting less plugged.
Did I mention that he's a total bread fiend? I didn't figure it out until I woke up one morning to find him munching on it. Needless to say, stuff is more locked up - I just didn't think boring old bread would be an issue when Monsieur Markus gets a feast of duck and peas.
That reminds me that I need to find some cables and upload some pics of him. He is increasingly adorable, but I've been reminded how time-consuming pets can be. He's mostly time-consuming because he likes to hang out with people.
The problem: What happens when I get a job?
Well, I'll probably get a second cat. It's not all that much more work than just one cat, especially after Markus' health issues. Hopefully, they can be buddies and I'll be well on my way to having a Casa de Swank in Utah.

If you want to keep people out of the elevator for a two-hour span so that your visiting dignitary doesn't have to rub elbows with the proletariat, or ride along with explosive devices, you might want to think of a better "out-of-order" reason than "preventative maintenance."
The state of elevator repair services on campus is widely known. Elevators regularly sit inoperable for weeks at a time waiting for their turn in the repair cycle. The idea that you would be so caught up suddenly as to be into a preventative maintenance cycle is laughable.

Are you looking at the words per minute or the characters per minute? Misleadingly, characters per minute is the number at the top with words per minute hidden a bit on the left.
And I'd say it is a little fast since my speed is getting clocked in the mid-90s but in more official settings I've never gone reliably over 85 or so. Of course, that could be a product of not having to do any punctuation except the occasional apostrophe and by sticking to the most common words you are mostly sticking to the most common letters and that is what a QWERTY keyboard is designed to facilitate.
Morrigoon
01-17-2008, 06:51 PM
Yeah, the characters per minute was like in the 700's.
Wow, then even if it is a bit fast in its measurement you are extremely fast.
That or your system clock is slow so that the javascript is giving you extra time. But that seems unlikely.

Her spay appointment is tomorrow morning, so we had to lock her up in the bathroom tonight, away from food and water. (It was either that, or deprive everyone of food and water and they'd all freak out.)

I can't believe I spent $22 on just four items at a supermarket today.
Well, okay, I can, because it was Bristol Farms.
Anyway, I was grazing the samples and one thing I tried I simply had to get - they had these flavored olive oils, very high quality: garlic (of course), red pepper, basil, and lemon. All of them very good... but the LEMON! Freaking amazing. Like dipping bread into lemon curd that happens to have the texture of olive oil. Okay, that doesn't make it sound appetizing, but trust me, it's amazing. $9/bottle, but I figure we spend that on alcohol at the supermarket, so why not spend that on a bottle of really fine olive oil that will only be used in small amounts anyway?

Had no sharp cheese, only black truffle cheese (which is incredibly delicious).
Pie is gone with the wind. Best pie I've ever made. 3 kinds of apples and cranberries. Yum!

I have a glass shard in my left index finger and I can't get it out. However, it sure hurts like hell now. It could be worse. I didn't cut off my thumb.Sorry I couldn't help. I probably made it worse. Have you attacked it with a needle yet?

Sooo... I'm leaving for Sacramento in a few hours. What's the weather like up there?
A little bit cold (if you consider upper 40s to be cold) and raining a bit (http://www.weatherunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=sacramento%2C+ca)

I hate it when people at work who are not busy (and are never busy) say that they're 'too busy to talk'. Yeah, right.

Seriously, it is probably that they know that if they stop to talk to you, that they might be required to actually think (gasp) or do something (the horror!).

Maybe it was the Onion/Sardine bagel I had this morning?
Funny thing is is that I'm always busy but am never too busy to talk to someone. In fact, it's always good to talk to someone because what they end up saying could make one less busy. (Or more busy, I guess...)
But to blow off someone... lame.

So I've been blogging all morning on this - the Fed announced an emergency between-meeting rate cut this morning. 3/4%! Huge. And just to highlight what a big deal this is, I should point out that the next meeting of the Fed is only a week away, but they still decided to cut now (and will probably cut again at the meeting, maybe not by as much).

I am interested to see what happens in the next few weeks.
The Dow is down 15.8% since the high set last October. Not quite a Bear Market (generally considered a 20% drop), but definitely more than a correction (generally considered at 10%).
In related news; in the last two days, the Nikkei has lost 9.5%, the Hang Seng has lost 14.1%, and Bombay has lost 12.4%. However, the London and German markets both rebounded slightly today after taking a dive yesterday.

I go to this one take-out place pretty regularly and the guy behind the counter is without a doubt the slowest creature on this planet. Yes, he's cute and he tries hard but, dang, he's repeatedly outrun by molasses on several occasions. Zero sense of urgency whatsoever.
The take-out orders pile up behind him and all he needs to do is hand them out to the waiting customers. So, what does he do? He takes more orders. Never mind that he's the only one working the front and is responsible for handing out food too.
Yes, I'm grouchy today. But he should know that and work faster.

I'd describe myself as bottom-ish. A little bit of Ennis but a whole lotta Jack. And I don't know the rules about whether tops or bottoms give blowjobs.
;)
And, by the way, "bottom" doesn't always mean passive. When I'm in a mood, I can make a top feel like pond scum.

an art friend of mine is in a contest.
A Place to Bark... and meow (http://aplacetobark.blogspot.com/)
A PLACE TO BARK is a no kill foster and adoption rescue dedicated to the welfare of animals. Established in 2001, we mainly work with Animal Control Agencies, rescue animals from high kill shelters and foster them till they are healthy. This provides the best possible situation, for the animals. They are then placed for adoption through Humane Societies in various parts of the country. We cover all costs for the medical care of the animals with no cost to the Humane Societies they are going to. We also do some private adoptions after a strict screening process.
Anyway.. Parade is running a contest. The top four ( I think) people, or orgs who with the most UNIQUE donations will recieve a $50,000 grant to their cause.
Also, the donations up to $25,000 will be matched by the Zoline Foundation even if the cause does not place in the top four.
Any donation of $10 or more counts.
The art community is doing what they can, and so far she has fabulous chances of staying in the top five or however many it is.
If you look at her blog, and would like to help her achieve this goal, or know someone else who might, I ask that you pass the word. We have till the end of the month to keep her in the top.
There is a "badge" on the right hand side of her blog for donations.
Thank you so much for giving this a read!
(and for those who are curious, she's located in Tenn, so most of us are too far away to say "oh, how cute, let me drive right over and adopt him")

Hotel circle isn't that far - and if you take the trolley it drops you off right in front of the convention center.
