I miss DSL

Yesterday, my T-Mobile internet access went down. This mornin it's up but every application I own seems to want to contact the mothership and my bandwidth has been hijacked at the moment for "important updates." I'm thinking it may be time to cruise local hotel lobbies for free wireless.

€uro, are you considering becoming a Wi-Fi ho?

Just when is your DSL supposed to get fixed?

My DSL went down for the first time in maybe 3 years tonight. I felt helpless, as I was in the middle of negotiating a behind-the-scenes eBay deal for a Wii with a guy in S. Pasadena. I had to use my old creaky laptop and the Apartment Complex LAN. Yeah, I know: real rough. Not everyone has internet floating around their building. Still, I was annoyed for few hours. :D That laptop has a mushy keyboard.

We're down for 2-3 weeks, and due to the proximity of the Holidays, I suspect 3 weeks will be the closer target. On the plus side, we're one week down...

So... I got punched in the arm on the bus this morning by a ladies out of control kid.

Guess what she did next?

She announced to the entire bus, that she was sorry for her kid's behavior, then turned to him and said "This is IT!" She did what I can only describe as some sort of mother ninja move and flipped the lil brat up on to her lap. She gave the kid a good whoopin'. Then she apologized to me, and had the kid apologize. She also gave me the kid's McDonalds gift card.

I've forgotten if I mentioned that I got the stomach flu on Sunday. You remember the kind you used to get when you were 10 years old? Yeah, that one. It is possible that it was an alergic reaction to a medication and slightly possible it was food poisioning but I believe it was probably the flu. I always joke that my immune system is pretty good because I go do DL so often and get exposed to a lot of icky diseases. However, I haven't been going to the park regularly at all. I went to DL on Friday.

Forget an apple a day. A visit to DL every week is more like it. I guess I must resume my health regeme.

Did anyone else in our little party get sick or was I the only lucky one? I hope so, because It's been 3 days now since I have had a substantial meal. I'm 10 pounds down on the world's most unhealthy diet.

I would apologize for tripple posting, but I get so little time on line, I'm not sorry.

So. I decided to see if I could get our ISP to expidite our new DSL service today. Chris has handled the transition up to this point and been more than willing to work with their limitations and timeline, however I run my business out of my home using the internet to recieve all orders and to get paid for the work I've done. It's been a HUGE impact on me. I decided to give them a poke to see if I could light a fire.

I got the same info that Chris got even after I explained the situation to them. The conversation went something like this:

So, no internet for a month? It will take 2-3 weeks. From the day it went down? No, from the day we put in the order. So, that was a week after we lost connection, therefore a month.

Is there any sort of band aid we can put on the situation since I run my business out of my home using the internet? I can give you free dial-up. That's nice of you. Will you also be giving me the $40 device so that my MAC can actually access dialup? Ah, no.

{after about 10 minutes of asking questions.....} Ok then, is there any way to expedite the order to get things in place sooner? Well, I can send a request to my supervisor. OK. How long will that take? A few days. A few days to send a request? Well, I'm typing it up now. OK. What's your supervisor's name? blahblahbla. And your name again is.......? blahblahblah.

So, will you call me when you get a resolution on this? I can send you an email. !WHAT DIDN'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE FACT I DON'T HAVE INTERNET ACESS AT MY OFFICE?! Ummm, no. You can call my cell, please.

Lastly, if I were to cancel this lengthy upgrade process and find a providor that could actually get me connected sooner, when would be the last day I could do that without incurring charges? Well, you've agreed to a one year contract. Correct, but that becomes effective upon the service being provided and, according to you, the service won't be provided for another 2 weeks. (My lawyer boss who used to work for Earthlink got a good laugh at this bit.)

I got the supervisor's name and will be following up tomorrow.

What a bunch of dorks.

The drill is to include:

* Simulated Fuel Farm explosion and HAZMAT storage facility fire with

real smoke

* 78 casualties wearing realistic-looking moulage makeup

* Real-time response efforts of more than 40 emergency response units

in personal protective equipment

* Triage of victims with on-scene medical intervention and transport

* Medical evacuation of casualties via Blackhawk HH60 and UH1

helicopters to Andrews Air Force Base.

* State-of-the-art "turn key" portable medical surge shelters - first

of their kind in the area

* Fixed and portable decontamination shelters

* Static displays, including military helicopters (1 UH1 and 1 OH58),

configured for medical evacuations, and Joint Forces Headquarters Incident Command Bus.

Did they check or clean the fuel injection system? That sets off the check engine light until it's reset.

Also, make sure your gas cap is on tightly. If it isn't, tighten it and the light might go away after a few more engine startups.

What kind of car? You can take it to the nearest autozone, and they will scan the error codes for free.

Are the temperature and oil pressure ok?

GD is right, a loose fuel cap will trip the light. On newer cars, for emissions, they will pressurize the fuel tank to detect a leak. A loose fuel cap will look like a leak.

I don't know. I will have to ask them. They're a new mechanic to me and at this moment, I miss my car dealership in VA.

It's a 1998 Buick Le Sabre (yes, a lil ol lady car, what about it?)

Temp and oil pressure fine, I was watching the whole drive into work. I gassed the car when I got to the office, so the gas cap is tight.

The measurements that trigger the check engine light (well, one of the measurements, there's a whole litany of conditions that trigger it) are averages of readings taken each time you start your car. So it takes a start-up or two for the light to trigger if, say, your gas cap is loose, and it takes a start-up or two for it to go away once you fix the problem (unless someone goes in and manually resets it).

Okay, this makes total sense. Just further illustrates how little I really know about car maintenance. But, that's what I pay the mechanic for. All I can handle is making sure I change the oil every 3k miles and check the tires. Leave them to check the fluids, belts and everything else.

We had a check engine light come on during our drive home from Disneyland last month. It started blinking and we noticed the enging misfiring (in Weed of all places) but the owner's manual said to just keep driving and have it looked at when we got somewhere that we could. It also said it has a triple something that resets the light after it has been started and not detected the problem 3 times. It could be that you just haven't hit your magic number. We figured the problem was probably bad gas though it didn't start acting funny until we were at a half a tank.

For those that don't know, there's NOTHING in Weed ;)

Bingo, engine misfire. I'm dropping it off tomorrow morning, just in case. Been a good while since I had a tune up and, who knows, might just be a spark plug that needs replacing. In any case, I'm relieved, I have a short commute home, a new cell phone in case I do get into trouble and a ride back to the office tomorrow morning.

Is there a gas station in Weed? I remember driving south and passing a sign that said Bradley and there was nothing in sight for miles and I always wondered where, exactly, Bradley was. I think that was it.

Your car broke down there too? ;)

We drove it all the way back home fine, it stopped misfiring after I got it up to freeway speeds (tentatively though, I hate car trouble and hate it even more when we're still 3 states from home) and then stopped entirely after the next tank of gas. The light went off after we stopped in The Dalles, OR, which was approximately 3 restarts since the original problem.

So, I was sick last night, thought I was ok this morning, but had little appetite. After a small breakfast I thought I'd be ok at work but quickly lost energy. My whole body is achy and I'm moving like an old lady. I'm back home now, with juice and fruit and cereal to get my appetite back up. It's not often I take a sick day.

It ocurred to me today that I had not yet ordered new business cards since my promotion, nor since my company updated its logo. So I began searching our internal website for a form to fill out to order business cards to no avail.

Imagine my surprise when, not 30 minutes later, our office admin walked by and plopped a box of brand new business cards on my desk!! Geez, I better be careful how I weild this newfound power to shape the universe with thought alone.

Oh, and these new cards give me the title of one position higher than I was just promoted to. I'm thinking real hard about whether I should ask for a new set or not...

so- Brit is going to be investigated by Child Services and Linds is getting help from Al Gore to take on the gossips?

This latest criticism comes just 24 hours after it was reported that the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services planned to investigate the singer about concerns over the welfare of her two children, Sean Preston and Jayden James.

Similarly, it has been an unfortunate week for Mean Girls star, Lindsay Lohan. The brunette actress, who recently joined Alcoholics Anonymous, has reportedly sent a second rambling, semi-literate e-mail to her friends - less than two weeks after making an incoherent tribute to late director Robert Altman.

In a letter obtained by the New York Post, she claimed that she planned to take on gossip columns with the help of former Vice President Al Gore.

'Al Gore will help me,' she wrote. 'He came up to me last night and said he would be very happy to have a conversation with me.

'If he is willing to help me, let's find out. Hilary (sic) Clinton, Bill Clinton and Evan Metroplis (sic) and John Daur who works with them would be willing, if we just ask. If we just ASK.'

Holy

Subject: The way of the future-Howard Hughes once said. I am willing to release a politically/morally correct, fully adequite letter to the press if any of you are willing to help. Simply to state my oppinions on how our society should be educated on for the better of our country. Our people. Also because I have such an impact on our younger generations, as well as generations older than me. Which we all know and can obviously see. People are just mean. I am going to proceed with putting LR to court if need be for what she's done to me. Its my life. I want to live it. People cannot lie and think that it is okay to continue on having done so. Simply because they will do it again to someone else, and that is not alright with me. I have had many ups and downs, as do we all.

But to make false accusations to one girl is unjust in my oppinion. Having said this, I am willing to do anything I need to get my life the way it should be and the way I work for it to be.. And have thus far in my career. Let's sue the tabloids for saying the things they say. Defamation of character. Amongst other illegal accusations, I will repeat this over and over to make my point. I am not fully aware of what these, again, accusations are, but I am fully and eagerly prepared to learn them. Have harvey and all lawyers help me please. If he is willing. Al Gore will help me he came up to me last night and said he would be very happy to have a conversation with me. If he is willing to help me, let's find out. Hilary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and Evan metroplis, and John Daur who works with them would be willing, if we just ask. If we just ASK. I'd really like to fix things and refuse to stop on any account for these unintelligent, vulgar people who like to hurt other people. Not just me, but everyone. I'm willing to hold a press conference and I will do anything necessary to do so. In putting an end to 'these people' trying to put an end to me and belittle me as well as try to be the demise of me after all I've gone through and done at such a young and tender age in a womans life. Its enough already, I've had enough and I am going to be the one to make a change. For all of my fellow actors, friends, people I admire and for those I've lost in the recent days, years, months. I do believe the focus in the world has misplaced and directed in the wrong directions and I am willing to be the one to help change that and use my celebrity status to move the focalpoint /(s) of the press to the real issues that we have going on as we speak. Anyone that is willing to help and has a family member or friend, even co-worker that is in a position to be involved in any way, shape or form, please contact me, Jenni Muro, Leslie Sloane, Michael Heller, Jason Sloane, Jason Weinberg as soon as you can or are willing. Just ask them, it doesn't hurt to ask. So let's start now, rather than waste time. Do you agree? Because I'm doing it either way. The way of the future. Thank you for your time. but I don't think Gore is so inclined-

Former Veep Al Gore seems to take issue with reports that he'll help Lindsay Lohan fight the media and clean up her image. The New York Post reported Lohan's proclamation, "Al Gore will help me. He came up to me last night and said he would be very happy to have a conversation with me."

According to Page Six, Lohan sent an e-mail to her friends and lawyers after a GQ magazine party, claiming Gore would come to her aid. TMZ contacted Gore's P.R. rep today who said, "I can confirm for you that Mr. Gore has only met Ms. Lohan once, very briefly, at the GQ Men of the Year dinner last week. There were hundreds of other guests." Not exactly what La Lohan told her buds. Slate printed what they say is a copy of the email.

So for the most part I'm very lucky that my company is, in general, very un-Dilbertlike in nature. It's got it's elements, but as corporate environments go, it's quite sane and pleasant.

However, Dogbert, evil human resources director, strikes home.

Latest example. As I've mentioned before, every Friday, our department provides bagels. Of course, we need to cut these bagels. Up until last week, there was always a nice big sharp knife or two to accomplish that feat. But last week it was missing, and it's still missing this week. While mutilating today's bagel with a standard table knife, I mentioned that it was still missing. A coworker explained that our HR head has decided that it's too much of a liability and has forbidden there to be such a sharp knife provided.

And yes, she's given that much micro-management power at this company because she's been here forever. Everyone complains about her, that she's difficult to get along with and that she has too much control, but she remains in charge.

And here's the real kicker. These bagels are paid for out of the engineering department's budget and are supposed to be for the engineers. There are always more than enough to go around, so it's not a big deal if a couple people from outside the department have one. But in recent weeks, I've been noticing that every time I go out there, I see more people from HR, finance, etc. than engineers there. Seems word has spread. And I BET that's why the HR director has suddenly (after, oh, 5 years of having a knife without an issue) taken an interest in "our safety". Bah.

We purchased a little Xmas gift for ourselves over the weekend: the complete first season of Saturday Night Live. All 24 episodes in their original 90 minute format (The shows were later edited down to 60 minutes in syndication, which really annoyed me when I would try to videotape them).

Matthew is digging seeing them for the first time while I am joyfully dancing down memory lane. :) Really great stuff, this is.

Oh, and we also FINALLY renewed our AP's, choosing to get the deluxe ones this go around. Went to the park last Thursday to do this, and it was pretty empty until evening rolled around. The wonders never cease.

For all the malpractice, Vioxx-like disasters, and wildly speculative/inaccurate information disseminated by main stream media, modern medicine's been getting a bad rap recently. But every once in a while, you're reminded of just how far things have come and continue to come.

If my dad had gone through what he's been through over the past 8 months even 5 years ago, he would almost certainly be blind (at best) by now. Untreated diabetes (leading to macular degeneration), near-fatal cellulitis, and a stroke in the vision region of his brain left the future blurry, so to speak. This for a man whose greatest passions are reading, writing, and photography. Doctors were giving him pretty long odds to even stop further deterioration.

But, back from his latest checkup, he's actually seen improvement in both eyes thanks not only to laser treatment, but experimental injections for the macular degeneration. And now that it's been over 6 months since the stroke, he's been cleared to begin further treatments with another injection that has shown even more promising results in correcting degeneration than the one he's already been getting (stroke risk is one of its side effects, so they didn't want to increase that risk until they were sure things were stable).

He's not exactly going to be taking up a career writing names on grains of rice any time soon, or even driving. But this improvement, and opportunity for further improvement, has been far more than any of us could have hoped for and will allow him to do far more of what he had planned with his retirement (namely, continue to write and edit text books, and travel as much as he can).

As you can tell, I'm much relieved to hear this latest news.

The wonders never cease.

As you can tell, I'm much relieved to hear this latest news.

This is awesome news! I'm so happy for you and for your Dad, this will make for a more joyous holiday season for you all. I'll light a candle for him too!

That's a Pancake Parlour (Sydney's first) located in the historic "Rocks" area of Sydney (right near Circular Quay in the heart of the city)

LINK (http://www.pancakesontherocks.com.au/history.htm)

On returning to Australia, Mr Meadmore soon found out why this pancake-eating obsession had not hit our shores. There was a difference in the way our wheat germinated, therefore producing different flour. So, for the first 10 years of operation, they imported the original Aunt Jemima mix from America until a local company could supply the strain needed to make those American style pancakes.

They're saying that over a million customers in the area are without power. My folks don't have power. There's a huge power line down by the law school. Most public schools are closed. So today in our week-long effort to clean our garage, was our day of hauling. Our first stop was to a local "E-Waste" disposal site. Under the latest environmental laws, most electronics qualify as hazardous waste and cannot be placed in normal trash, so being the responsible citizens that we are we made a trek to San Pedro.

The experience was something out of an apocalyptic sci-fi flicks. The address on Gaffey was a hand painted sign, in one of those - oops-I-wrote-to-big shrinking fonts. Other signs directed us through the industrial sites, and ultimately through a driveway onto a plastic tarp next to a shack like structure with carts overloaded with electronics. The employees, dressed in white hazmat jumpsuits, moved like zombies and immediately began pulling things out of my car, they mumbled things we didn't understand and took quite awhile to figure out the box of books and my tire-iron were not eWaste and needed to be left in the car. As soon as the next car drove up, they were on it and I drove off through a colonnaded of traffic cones directing me back to the street. I wish I took some pictures

Prudence was rude enough to send her little storm my way and we lost power for most of last night. Kick ass winds, though! At one point, I was a little worried that a tornado might be approaching. It was pitch dark, the wind was howling and then I distinctly heard the sound of an approaching train. (We live nowhere near train tracks). Then it seemed to just fade out, but it was a little bit scary..... I got about two hours sleep, had to work all day then attend a Deaf/HOH Christmas party at Tori's ENT's office. It was very fun seeing all the kids from her preschool days, but a bit sad to see all the many new little ones that are entering the system.

It was nice. 27 school and program (violence prevention, drug rehab) employees got to leave the jail and go to a restaurant at noon for a steak, chicken or salmon lunch. I chose steak. The anonymous and random gift exchange was also painless. I brought a Starbucks gift card, and left with an American Express gift card. I was home by 2:30 pm.

Because my recent schedule (5:45 am to 2:00 pm) has completely thrown off my sleep patterns, I've been awake for a couple of hours today, and have been flipping through some awful choices on TV. Here's what I'm watching right now:

Well, we have one more day dedicated to the Dungeon. We've made excellent progress and, my only regret, is that we didn't take "before" pictures. We dropped off the electronics at the Zombie Lot yesterday then took 2 full car loads to Out of the Closet. We then bought and assembled two heavy duty metal shelf units. Today, out big goal is to load them up and go through the rest of the stuff that remains. One more trip to the thrift store may be in order. Then we can relax.

My bratty SIL and Bro sent us a box yesterday (after I told them what we were doing). The box contained about 10 fake and feathered birds that were my Mother's. Peach is now snug in the other cage, sleeping in the "house" with Squiggles and Fluffer, so I can clean her cage and toss it up above the garage. No real reason to be sad, she gave us a lot of joy. David went with Dawn to her company Christmas party, had the nerve to get mad at me when I said it was a date.

Nickolas and I went out to finish our Shopping. All I really needed was g/c for my inlaws and something for the Old People. It was hot and crowded at the mall. We went to Red Robin for dinner (and a tasty beverage for me). There were 2 kids, boy and girl around 7-8 years old, sitting next to us. Their moms were at a table behind them, totally oblivious to the chaos ensuing, ear piercing squeals, jumping up and down on the bench seat, being loud and unruly, basically poster children for birth control.

We ended up asking to move away when the couple on the other side left, just to get some distance. When they were finally ready to leave one of the mothers actually had the nerve to say, loudly, that people were staring at them and giving them dirty looks. NO SHYT! I actually had more than one patron in the vicinity thank me for being a good parent because Nickolas was behaving so nicely.

If your kids can't behave in public then don't take them out, much less let them sit at their own table.

*sigh*

It is cold and rainy, I love it!!

We drove through one of the nicer neighborhoods to view lights, but not much was lit, every year there is less and less. What was there was very pretty.

Poor Peach is eyeballing me with a, "Why am I in here with these children?" look.

So I just got an email from Dell telling me to stop using my Laptop battery - I guess I have one of the exploding batteries after all. I wonder if they'll let me fly with it.

You know, if Evangeline Lilly needs somewhere to stay (http://www.nbc4.tv/entertainment/10575676/detail.html?dl=mainclick), we've got an extra bed.

That's because you're a "giver".

Well, that's one of the reasons.

Well, that's one of the reasons.Come to think of it, the extra bed's really a futon, not very swanky for someone like Lilly. Sigh, I guess we can make room in the queen bed for her. I'm just that giving.

I was just in Kailua. It's much quieter than Honolulu. The beach over there is very nice.

I'm all registered for my grand return to college in January. I'm starting slow with English and Japanese next semester, then I'll do a full load in the fall. I'm majoring in English with an emphasis on creative writing for my bachelor's, and something else for my master's. I hope all my classes aren't full of eighteen year olds.

I've also lost more than ten pounds in almost three weeks. Woohoo!

I've also lost more than ten pounds in almost three weeks. Woohoo!I think I'll have put on 10 pounds by the end of today. All in fruit cake.

The glut has begun. For the last week, there have been gift baskets, fruit cakes, cookie trays galore left out for us to pick at while we work. And I happen to sit within steps of the customary communal food dispensing area, so I'm doomed. Doomed to snacky hell.

for what it's worth...

a bit of audio from Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is buried in this ABC Radio "Merry Christmas from Walt Disney World" special (over two hours long)... some of you may enjoy hearing it.

... instead of a dedicated thread that would likely fill with anti-Dreams pontification, i decided tyhis thread would suffice.

sorry to have missed so many birthdays, congrats to Prudence, and all of the many other things i am certain i have missed reading about.

I got the results of a lower back x-ray I got a few weeks ago. Diagnosis = 2 words - Degenerative Changes. So, am I supposed to know what this means or what I'm supposed to do about it?

Sounds like deginerative disc desease that has progressed. This usually means you need to alter, or add to your treatment.

Good luck!

I see we aren't the only office to be in a serious junkfood shortage

Vendors have been bringing in lunches, candy, cookies, cupcakes, cookies and more food. Employees have been bringing in baked goods. And just in case we wanted some more sweets to go with our sweets we had a birthday celebration with 2 Costco size cakes and red punch.

I'll be lucky if I get off early. I'm not holding my breath obviously. Two of the four families remembered to bring a gift for their daycare provider this morning. 50/50 is pretty good I guess.

I just spent 2+ hours at war with a clogged dryer vent. And I doubt I succeeded in making the situation any better. It was my own personal Iraq.

I wonder if Bush's back hurts too.
