We are totally envious of the trellis systems for cukes and melons and squash and so forth as seen in the Land pavillion at Epcot. Someday maybe we can have a cucumber trellis! And a tomato tree!

I didn't feel like going back through all of Al's posts. Has it ever been announced that Blue Bayou is finally getting its own full kitchen? Seems they used to do all the cooking downstairs and then do final assembly in the "sorta kitchen like area" next to BB.

In the trial runs, the wait (for CMs only) has been atrocious: 45 minutes to get a salad, two hours for full meal.

I hope they get the kinks worked outta da system

Lychee is in the grocery store. They kindof look like a cross between raspberries and strawberries, and they look unripe, though that may be normal. I've never seen them except in gummy form.

And how dare they have a different configuration! Right? ;) Computers are so personal. Aside from the content. You have the settings, the programs, the shortcuts, the bookmarks. You know where your stuff is and their stuff is not in the same place as your stuff. My work computer was just re-done and I spent a day trying to get it back to how it was. It's getting there but still needs a lot of work.

After Sunday, I told David I would like a "Dawn Free Weekend." He is still spending waaay too much time over at her house, with her and the kids. Sunday James (the 8 yr old boy) flew into a litteral rage against Nickolas (because Nick didn't want to watch NasCar) and tried to bite him. All I heard was a very primal yell and then Nickolas crying. Nick has a very high pain tollerance, so when he cried I know it is bad. He managed to keep James from biting his hand and his face, but the kid managed to latch on on Nick's chest. He now has a black and blue mark in the shape of a mouth.

The reasoning later used to defend his behaviour: He flies into rages just like his dad, he sees red and there is no dealing with him *giggle*. After Jimmy's death she was going to get James some counseling, it has never happened. I am goign to try to take a stand that until he gets some serious help she will not see us around.

I wonder if we have any in the stores up here? We have a bunch of specialty markets and such. I just found out Sunday that I can get my favorite lychee gummy candy at the Walgreen's 1/2 block away from my place. They have lychee and melon flavors here, but no kiwi. Alas.

I saw these at Publix; they were with the other berries, in a smallish plastic container like the kind raspberries and blueberries come in. Surely if Publix has them, so does Whole Foods.

Alas, I don't think ripe fruit would ship well.

I should do a bit of web research and figure out how to tell when lychees are ripe/good. Maybe I will make a pie. Hmmm...

I am bored... no new orders to process. I am teaching someone else how to invoice the orders...no orders makes this really difficult. I am not allowed to be in the warehouse because I need to be in here to answer the phone (it isn't ringing). It is going to be uber hot here today, and the warehouse is like a sauna, so not being able to be out there isn't a bad thing right now.

Nickolas had visitors last night at 9, wanting him to spend the night, but he was being a pill and I said no. I fee guilty abbout saying no. I feel worse that when he asked who was at the door I lied and said no one. He is gonna be a pissy puppy today when he finds out.

This morning I used the rats to wake him up. I opened his door and took them out. 2 of them made their way into his room. Fluffernutter ended up on his bed and kissed him awake, so at least he was in a good mood this morning.

Trying to get into the bathroom to get ready for work is hard when you have 3 rodents tyring to get in there with you. They kept standing on my feet. I had to drop them on the couch and run for it.

Last night was a scene right out of a B horror movie. There were June bugs everywhere outside. If you turned on a light and went out there you were attacked. This morning there were carcasses all over the place.

Sunday it is expected to be 110. I don't plan on leavnig my house all weekend.

I have been running a line by line comparison of a newer version of a billing report (to the older, currently production version) that contains around 2000 contracts with 27 elements of cost each that must be verfied and any variances reported for further investigation.

This means that I have approximately 54000 numbers on two reports to compare.

I will never finish.

This automated, right?

Sadly, no. I can automate various processes such as this within the production system to compare the same data from one report to another and report mysterious variances.

However, the users don't like this (and actually the government auditors don't either) when changing from one production version of a program to a newer version with enhanced capabilities. It is actually their job to perform the final verification, but over the years they have brow beaten me and their own IT department with their laziness and lack of willingness to do the job of final approval on enhancements they request, and that has led to piles and piles of projects that are never signed off on, making me and IT look bad regardless of how much documentation we produce that it is actually the users who are not doing their jobs.

And alas, these are not Excel spreadsheets or finding any variances would be simple. They are reports run on a mainframe that produce .pdf files. So it is eyeballing line by line.

And yes, while it sucks, I do bill by the hour.

One other thing about those stupid reports....I'm no going to tell the users, but I am only verifying totals. Each of the contracts can have anywhere from 1 to 15 years of data for those 27 elements of cost, averaging probably 6 years each. If the totals don't match, then I will investigate the years. I am not going to multiply my verification of 54000 numbers by the average of 6 and have to verify 324000 numbers on two reports.

I swear that when I discover the individuals responsible for this piece of crap budget module I will shoot them dead. And then I will personally bring them back to life so that I can kill them in ever more inventive ways. Don't tell me the damn thing's logical. There is no logic about a system that sometimes will distribute salary changes automatically across the biennium and sometimes requires manual distribution, and the only way to tell the difference is to try it one way and see if it works.

For the record - if you're trying to eliminate one position and move all of its salary into another position you must distribute the amounts manually. If you attempt to auto distribute, it will claim you're fine and that you zero out on the final edit, but when you go to submit the changes it will have fits about the permanent service period being greater or less than zero, even though adding 12.0- to the existing 12.0 would logically produce the desired result, and DOES produce the desired result if you do the manual distribution. Which *looks* just the same when you're done as the auto distribute.

Stupid piece of crap.

We had climbed up on a big crane and the wind picked up. It was hot hot hot, humid and incredibly windy. Then the lightening started. It was spectacular, but I don't think we were in the safest environment for a lightening storm.

There was a hurricane (or Typhoon in the Pacific - right?) brewing off of Mexico that was causing it. This weather is very similar to that experience. Stay off of tall, exposed structures.

They still call them hurricanes in Mexico (we are considered the Eastern Pacific)

I have an interview with a temp agency tomorrow morning. I did call SY and spoke to the girl who trained me and asked if I could use her as a reference. I don't know if she has the spine to tell the owner that I have an interview or not... I just can't believe that the owner truly expected me to stick around and wait for 2 weeks for the phone to ring to tell me I can go back to work.

Why... because I'm a huge martyr type who takes things waaay too personally, and takes guilt on when it isnt mine to take. (Okay, if you know me, you're sitting there thinking omg, she admitted it!)
I think that some other people in my life should have gotten a new/er car before me, that I dont deserve it, blah blah. I wont bore you with those details. I've never had a new car, never had car payments, and never expected to have either.

Never mind that I was driving a 1987 two door Manual Nissan Sentra that wasnt passing smog, and the blue book value was under what it would cost to repair it. That my mechanic told me six months ago not to take outside the city if I wanted to arrive at my destination.

I bought a 2006 Toyota Corolla. Automatic, power windows, a/c, and cloth seats.
Do i love it? No, I love my a/c'less Nissan. But its a guilt thing as I said. my son loves the new car. He has a door, and its not as hot as the old car. And we wont have to borrow a car to go to Disneyland.

It's driving my family nuts that they talk to someone and mention my car, only to discover I havent told the people they think are my closest friends.

Haha, my parents got suckered by a car dealer.

Okay, actually, they walked away with a good deal...but still got more car than they were looking for.

They wanted the Toyota Avalon, either the touring package or the XL. So they called around and found a dealer said they had 3 (1 touring, 2 XLs). They show up, the guy walks around the lot...and can't find the cars with those packages. "Ooooh, they must be in our over flow lot. Lemme drive you over there." So they head over to Van Nuys...where they once again can't find any XLs our touring. "Well, we've got some Limiteds on the lot..." The Limited package being the highest end, of course. So my parents are hemming and hawing, when they spot a manager (if you knew my mom, you'd know that this is when the story gets good). She pulls him into the conversation and says something to the effect of, "So, we call and this guy says you've got XLs and tourings. We get here and he's trying to sell us the Limited. Ever hear of the term 'bait and switch'?"

Ding, she said the magic words. Next thing you know, they're being offered the Limited at invoice. They ended up paying below the Touring sticker for the Limited. Like I said, a good deal...but they probably would have paid less than that if they had actually found an XL or touring. Suckers.

Of course, I'll be jealous of their Nav and auto-sensing door locks.

Nickolas and I just got home from a tour of http://www.indianpointranch.com/index.html . It was the same one that was used in an episode of Fear Factor.

I have decided that I must not speed, I must set the cruise control to stop myself from speeding, both to and from Tehachapi. I am tired of panicking every time I pass a CHP sitting on the side of the road and watching him pull in behind me. On the way up, it wasn't too bad. I saw him and was able to adjust my speed. He was in the center divider. On the way home he was sitting on the side, with an overpass embankment hiding him. I pulled off the freeway (I think I was doing 85ish when I passed him) and he pulled off the freeway too. Luckily, when I turned onto a frontage type road, he kept going. *whew*

Which I will be doing tomorrow morning, on my scheduled flight. My father--her nurse of sorts-- must be, like, a half-step from reaching complete enlightenment. No dung-beetle reincarnation for him.

What are you doing right now?

Obsessing, thanks for asking.

Wednesday or Thursday of last week, I started noticing some pain in my right foot, second toe, first joint inside the body of the foot. How did I injure it? No clue. Not bad, I thought, at first. By Friday, people were beginning to ask why I was limping. No big thing, sez I. I just needed to get off it and the four day weekend coming would be just the ticket.

Saturday, some swelling, not much. So I tried not to walk around much. Roller Coaster Tycoon got more play from me that day than it has in some time.

Sunday, huge swelling. My foot was at least half again bigger than it's normal size. No pain, oddly, but the swelling also included my ankle and part of the way up my calf. So I spend most of the day flat of my back with my feet up, not a particularly unpleasant position if that's what I want to be doing, but when forced not so enjoyable.

Today, the swelling has gone down in the calf and ankle, but the foot is still swollen and the tenderness in the toe joint is back. I called my GP, but it seems his office is enjoying a four day weekend too. I left a message with their service.

What do I do if my doc tells me to get off that foot and stay off it?

"But, Doc... Buddy... You don't understand. I'm going to Disneyland next weekend and this foot's going with me!":D

Gemini Cricket
07-03-2006, 08:13 AM
Do you think the swelling has anything to do with an insect bite or something? Like an allergic reaction to something that bit you? My ankle was swollen the other day and I found out that I was bit by a spider or something when I was walking Frodo in the park. It all went away...

Ha ha. If you have to stay off of your foot then you need a wheelchair at Disneyland! Yeehaw! GD and Lisa can take turns pushing you. :D

Could be, I suppose. But there are no marks and the original pain was inside the body of the foot. No pain anywhere on the skin, which is what I'd expect from a bite.

Could it be some sort of tendonitis? You can easily pull or lightly tear something in a foot without really feeling it until later. Does ice and/or elevation help?

My recommendation - Take ibuprofen (it's primarily an anti-inflammatory). About 20 minutes after you take it, apply low grade heat to your foot for about half an hour. Heat draws the ibuprofen to the spot of injury.

Then get ice and elevate your foot so it is above the level of your heart. Go 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off with the ice for about two to three hours.

Should the swelling return, do the same thing the next day.

Possibly, or I was thinking maybe some kind of stress fracture.

I haven't tried ice, but elevation definitely helps.

Just got off the phone with the nurse and I'm scheduled at 2PM for an x-ray. She said keep it elevated and take some ibuprofen. ;) We'll see.

I just got back from the Doctors too - I got to do a cardio treadmill test. Everything checked out fine, though my heart did throw in a few extra beats here and there and my bloodpresure was higher than they liked. The remedy of course is to loose some weight, "while I'm still young" - gotta love the flattery of the medical profession.

But the worst of this test is they had to shave portions of my chest to make the electrodes stick - so now I'm itching like crazy and look like I'm molting - sigh - can't wait for my hernia operation...

We are getting ready to head off for 4th festivities. Jimmy's folks had been groaning and moaning that their surviving son doesn't visit them anymore, so that is where we are going tonight. An afternoon of swimming, pigging out and then fireworks. So, the fireworks were pretty cool in places. We watched it from Bunker Hill because the river was jammed with 500,000 people.

People started picking their spots at the river at 5AM in the morning for a 10:30pm show. Yikes. And it rained on them.

Instead of doing that, we decided to go look at the Constitution being barged into the harbor. We also saw the Queen Mary 2. It's enormous. We also went aboard the Kersarge, a battleship thingy that was in port nearby. It housed hovercrafts which were really cool looking. I got to meet a hovercraft pilot. He was soooo cute in his flightsuit. :D

The fireworks show was cool but the finale sucked. The music was broadcast on the radio and cut out before the end. It just went to a commercial... really lame. I heard a broadcast about Boston's School for the Blind where music for the finale should have been. Really strange.

My wife just put her pajamas back on at 10:30.

She had LASIK done today. Well, that's what originally was going to be done. She had a newer procedure called EpiLASIK that that will eventually replace LASIK all together (was originally developed for people with thinner corneas, and my wife is right at the border line of requiring EpiLASIK).

Good news - much better prognosis as far as the negative side effects. Night vision, dry eyes - no problems with this procedure.

Bad news - with LASIK, typically 24 hours later you are good to go and have no issues. With EpiLASIK, you have two days of pain and aren't back to normal for about 5 days.
