So I just got a whole bunch of Netflix discs in the mail today. Two of the three are Oscar shorts: 2005 and 2006. Remember that really cute boy from the last HP film? He's in one of them, along with the girl who played Miss Darcy in the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice.

So, I'm slightly terrified that my condo is on fire.

I was sitting here in the living room, on the couch, and suddenly there was this loud sparking noise and I look over and the hallway light fixture is filling with smoke. So I rush over, futz with the light switch because I'm in a panic and can't remember which switch controls which light and I hit a switch and it's not turning off and we're all going to die.

But I got it turned off, yelled for Ryan (who still doesn't get that if I yell for him like that it's an emergency, and I don't have time to explain in great detail exactly what is going on and convince him that he has to pay attention), who came down and took the cover off the light fixture. The light fixture is super hot, and two of the three bulbs are broken in the fixture so that they can't be unscrewed. (Or at least they can't be easily unscrewed.) The unit now smells like smoke. Bad smoke. Electrical smoke.

So now I'm a little terrified that there's some fire smoldering in my ceiling, and I'm afraid to go to bed. How would I know if there's a fire smoldering in my ceiling? The ceiling doesn't feel hot. The floor above doesn't feel hot. But it smells like smoke in here. Is it the smoke from before I got the light turned off? And why was it smoking? What the hell is wrong? And if I fall asleep, because it's nearly midnight, will I die in a fire?

Kevy Baby
06-01-2007, 11:44 PM
Um, might I suggest calling the fire department instead of posting here? Go to the circuit breaker and turn off the entire circuit.

Morrigoon
06-01-2007, 11:46 PM
Yeah, definitely hit the circuit breaker. And Kevy's right about calling out the dept too. Or at least calling them to ask. Maybe look up their actual phone number instead of going through 911?

MouseWife
06-01-2007, 11:55 PM
Those are good ideas.

But, while you are waiting, I'd air out the house. Unfortunately, it seems smoke lingers as I think it permeates the walls, drapes? Maybe?

But, we've had things like this happen. Once while watching t.v., I kept noticing sparks from alongside the wall unit. So I called the hubby over and it was indeed sparking and, like you, it was night so luckily we caught it. He did something, no problem since.

Hopefully it wasn't internal wiring but rather the light fixture? Was anything else plugged into the same outlet as the lamp? Or was it like, say, the light fixture over the dining room table sort of thing?

Anyhow, don't sleep too tightly tonight and definitely get it checked!!

{we have/had one that is right up against the ceiling and the electrician who replaced it said being so close to the lightbulbs the heat was melting the wires and caused the shorting....but no sparks with that one, I think it just quit working...}

Take care!

Prudence
06-01-2007, 11:59 PM
I'm in the county so there's only 911, and they don't like non-emergencies. They get very very angry. I've had the 911 dispatcher yell at me before and refuse to summon help when we had something that we needed police for sooner than in the morning, when the non-emergency line opens, but wasn't life or death.

I think it's okay. On a whim, I checked what type of bulbs the spousal unit put in there, and sure enough, they're 40W. And the little sign on the light fixture says "Risk of Fire - Use 25W Lamp Max." The ceiling and floor still aren't hot, and the first floor smoke detector is right next to the lamp, so I probably won't become a crispy critter.

So, assuming I don't immolate myself, should I replace the entire fixture before trying to use it again? Right now I've got the light switches taped in place, so I don't accidentally turn it on again.

MouseWife
06-02-2007, 12:05 AM
Well, I would replace. They aren't quite so expensive these days, Home Depot has some nice ones.

It sort of sounds like mine. The Hubster could have replaced it but to make sure everything was alright, we had an electrician do it. He checked the wiring and that is when he explained about the heating of the wires and he did, now that I think about it, replace some of it. Of course, our wiring is quite old but...well, darn it, as old as I am.

hell, I am off to bed.

Pru, that's really scary. I hope you don't have any more problems.
**hugs**

Morrigoon
06-02-2007, 12:08 AM
Well, on one hand, I think the source of error is probably the bulbs. On the other hand, being wrong would REALLY suck.

So I'd say err on the side of caution, and in the morning call the non-emergency line and ask the firemen what they suggest? Or better yet call an electrician out to inspect it?

Prudence
06-02-2007, 12:22 AM
The hallway light fixtures are truly fugly and I was planning on leaving them for the next owner to deal with, but I guess I'll go ahead at replace them now with something that looks a little less like it belongs in a Shakey's Pizza.

I think I'll have my dad come out and replace them. He's an electrical engineer and, while he mostly does computer stuff now, he can still wire basic things like lights. I'll offer to program his phone in exchange, since he confessed that he can't figure out how to do it. It'll mean a lecture on how my life is all wrong, but better than then the alternative.

Anyone have any ideas on where to get rid of a bbq? It's gas, works but needs cleaning - maybe a few parts replaced. It's about 8 years old so time for a new one, plus it's just too big for one person. Anyway I don't think goodwill will take it and I don't think I can just put it in the dumpster. Any ideas?

Find a large parking lot, tie a match to a very long stick, close the bbq lid, turn the gas on...Then, after the gas kinda burns off relatively harmlessly, leave the bbq there and go home.

Morrigoon
06-02-2007, 01:13 PM
craigslist. Put it up there for like $30 and you'll probably get someone to take it off your hands, and give you $20 for the privilege.

Don't put it up for free or people will assume it doesn't work, and since it's gas, they'll assume it's dangerous.

Alternatively, go find the "Greek Row" area near your local college, and dump it on a corner with a "free" sign on it*

(*-dumping on other people's property is illegal, so I'm just kidding)

I think I talked about it recently - but the secret to Mexican Coke is sugar. US Coke has been using high fructose corn syrup since 1985. The difference is surprisingly massive.

Okay, so interesting thing. This is the second open house I've done for this one particular listing agent. In both cases, I wasn't pleased when I first arrived, because I perceived the location as "low traffic" (the more difficult to direct people to, the fewer you get). However, in both cases (assuming no one arrives in the next 1/2 hour), my *one* visitor has been exactly the kind of person I'm sitting here hoping to meet. I'm a happy Morri right now.

Here's the lowdown!

Trevor says to buy it now! :D He swears it's really addicting (and so do I!) :)

I don't know very much about them, really, and while I enjoy video games, I'm picky about what I play (I usually will only play the Disney Cars game on Playstation with my boyfriend. And I ALWAYS have to be Mater. :D)

What rocks with the Wii system is that you actually do "play" the sports games. You "swing" your tennis racket. You roll your bowling ball. You box with your own two fists. It's one of the most fun ways of getting a work out! You don't even realize it until you need to take a time-out and catch your breath!

I'd like to learn more about it, too. It's lots of fun! :)

So my dog has a ginormous lump on his face that I'm hoping is a simple abcess but the vet sent a sample to the lab to be analyzed in case it's cancer.

I'm sitting in the exam room crying. Ottis has been with us for 9 years and I really don't want to admit he won't be with us for another 9. Usually I can handle these things, but for some reason this morning I can't. Another client asked if I'm ok as we left. I will be. I sat with Ottis in the car before leaving (before I get on the road I'd like to be capable of driving) and she came over to give me a hug and say she understands how hard it is.

The kindness of strangers undoes me every time. I can handle things (eventually) but when someone's nice to me? I'm a basket case.

Ouch. This guy's a fantastic vet. He talks to my dogs the same way we do. He's been a little stressed out lately, so has been less personable, but there's been a lot of pets in the office which makes for high stress.

The first vet we tried here seemed not to want to get his clothes dirty, and would barely touch my dog to examine him. We haven't been back.

On the other hand, there are some fine looking men in Country music... I'd almost be willing to sit through Tim McGraw's music just to see him sweat live and in person.... Mmmmmm... Tim McGraw......

I saw Tug McGraw sweat live and in person a few times. At least I assume he was sweating under the flannel in the New York humidity.

Pavarotti sweats. He's a hard working man.

My wife's family was friends with the founding music director of the Pacific Symphony. Every time he conducted, he would drench his tux. I would venture that everyone in the orchestra sweats as well.

Dancers, of course.

Every play I was ever in, I sweated. Sometimes right through my dance belt. Didn't stop some of them from being crap.

I don't think sweat is a meaningful variable for artistic decisionmaking. Maybe it's a fringe benefit.

One New Years Day I had 10 missed calls between my home phone and my cell phone from my parents (and there was not an emergency). My dad said they called once on each phone. Uh huh. I saw 3 of them myself (cell phone, home phone. 10 minutes later repeat). No voice mail.

No caller ID. We have one of those big switching systems in our building.

But I did find out that it was a co-worker. I asked her why she kept calling when she knew I was at lunch. Her response was that she had a question that she needed answered, and that if she kept calling I might pick up….

Our salon is is like a co-op, where we all have our own stations and share in the phone answering duty. Sometimes we'll all be too busy to answer, in which case our voicemail picks up and regular clients know that we will call them back as soon as we are not busy. Every now and again, someone will call, hang up, call back, etc,- exactly as JW described. When we finally do answer, it's always a client who tries to laugh it off by saying they knew they'd wear us down if they called often enough. I want to reach through the phone line and rip out their tongues when they pull this. It's never an emergency, just someone being an asshole.

See, I see it from a different POV. I hate leaving messages, preferring to talk live to someone, so I'll call back at a different time because I consider live conversation a much better way to handle things. I *hate* leaving messages, so I don't if I can avoid it.

So far, June is not impressing me.

Light fixtures catching fire. Family members going psycho. People killing cats.

And today I go into work late, after an appointment, and I get to my desk and.....stop. While I was gone, people from the department across the hall got my suite mates to clear off my table, moving my files all laid out and sorted for biennium close processing, and put their giant stick fan up on my table, thus ensuring I could not put anything else out on my desk - which was just as well, because they'd cranked the window out to 90 degrees open. And while it was warm this weekend, today it was breezy, cold, and raining.

This isn't even someone from our group. I understand that it gets stuffy across the hall, and I don't mind if they come over and open the window when I'm gone. But to come in my cube, rearrange my work, and leave it like that - even making it so that I can't actually do my own work - I walked out.

For once in my life I grew a spine, left, and told our HR person I wasn't coming back until I have a work space that is actually mine. I like being next to a window, but if it's going to be a continual tug-of-war between me and the other unit, which wants the space, then I give up. This is not the first time they've messed with my space. If I'm on vacation, I come back to a cube full of everyone else's garbage because oh, they were cleaning out their cube and since I wasn't there....oh, and they don't have room to take it back right now, so if I could just hold onto it for awhile...

If every time I'm not the first one in the office in the morning I'm going to come into squatters using my workspace, then I'm done. They can assign me a new work station. If Ms. Director of Marketing wants to throw her weight around and make it clear that her employees are just so much better and more deserving than me, then she and her employees can just **** off.

And that goes double for my suite mates who HELPED cannibalize my space. It might be just a cube, but hell's bells I work there!

Pru, I'm so sorry they are treating you like that. That is so far beyond rude to move someone else's work/ project around. They obviously don't understand having your work laid out and arranged how you need/ want it for later use. My husbands cubicle was used as the dumping grounds for unused computer stuff until he couldn't find his desk, then he had to move it all to the basement!

Pru, when you and your boss inevitably sit down to discuss this matter, you definitely want to point out how other people's behavior has cost the company money because they've undone the hours it took you to get your work organized (hours the company has to pay you for), which you now have to RE-do in order to move forward, and therefore you expect the company will agree with you that it is HIGHLY inappropriate for your coworkers to be messing around in your workspace.

Well, it's actually taxpayer money that was wasted - so perhaps wendybeth should write a letter. I'm about to head into work now. The situation has not resolved, so I'm going to get some of my things to make clear the "will leave permanently" threat. In fact, once our HR person told my co-worker that marketing could NOT put their fan on my table, my co-worker brought in a fan of her own because, now it's not marketing's fans. And apparently because it wasn't a stick fan she stacked up a bunch of empty boxes and taped the fan to the top, where it promptly fell down once the table was bumped. (Fortunately, I wasn't there to get conked on the head.) The co-worker is being belligerent and keeps replacing the fan when the HR person left, because "those poor people across the hall" are hot.

Some more dirt has surfaced - the coworker who moved my stuff wants the manager of the fan-owning unit to hire her to work for them. So this is all about her future prospects. And my big boss lady is apparently pissed, because it's interfering with her "team-building" efforts to have team members sabotaging the team in order to curry favor with outsiders.

This whole spine thing is quite refreshing. I feel really bad-ass. It probably helped that I listened to "Start Wearing Purple" before going in yesterday. Got the blood going. I'll probably do the same today.

It depends on my mood. More often than not, when faced with a few options I can make the best of it and usually find another unexpected one at the last minute. Sometimes with too many choices, if I'm feeling squirrelly and/or indecisive, I can spend too much time deciding and not enough time doing more important stuff.

I didn't know we could change our names, not that I want to or anything.

Today is the boys last day of school, woohoo! I think we are going to the movies and out to lunch to celebrate! I can't believe we made it thru 5th grade, it seemed a lot tougher than when I was in school! Then again back in the Stone Age we didn't have all these technological advances they do now!

I am not used to my new schedule. And I'm antsy. And bummed. I hate being bummed in any way when it's a sunny f***ing day like this. BLAH. Gimme clouds and dark skies... gimme...

On the plus side, I've learned how to list textbooks on Amazon.com. I'm barely getting anything for two of my books, so I'm going to wait a bit and decide what to do with them later. I didn't realize that Amazon took such a thick cut from some of the lower priced items (like a $15 book), so I might end up keeping one, and selling the other one a different way. Or I'll turn around and sell it on Amazon for the Fall.

We'll see.

Now that I now longer am an "official representative" of anything within the online Disney community I've decided to end the anomaly of using my full name on message boards (that's why I did originally at MousePad and then at other Disney boards so nobody would think I was trying to spy and infiltrate).

The change from my name to one of my standard internet monikers would be too weird at this late stage but I figured I could at least get my last name out of there.

What about eBay? Is that an option for selling your textbooks? I see there is a fairly large amount (http://buy.ebay.com/textbooks) for same on there.

Also, do schools have end of term book buy-backs? I know that is what I did with a fair amount of my texts.

They do, but they are often picky about what they'll buy back (won't buy it if there's a new edition coming out, won't buy it if the class isn't offered the next session, won't buy certain paperbacks, etc.).

I recommended Amazon because in my experience I always got more for the books and they give a decent shipping credit. They also have a better return/refund policy that protects the seller.

Half.com uses eBays rules and PayPal also takes a chunk of the profits. So when using half.com you are paying PayPal fees and ebay fees.

I had a meeting this morning and next week something is gonna happen that I am dreading. I hate confrontation, but at least I have friends willing to do the deed, since I can't legally do it myself.

After that I picked up boy and we went to Chuy's for lunch. I got my ego stroked by a male friend, although I had to emphasize (again) that all we would ever ever be are friends. It is nice to hear kind words, knowing that it is genuine.

I cry because I'm tired. Tired of being "different". I'm tired of never feeling like I belong, you know? I'm not smart enough or cool enough, or swanky enough, or pretty enough. I feel like I'm invisible. A square peg who wishes she could find a square hole. I'm exhausted from trying to squeeze into the round one.

I'm sure nobody can relate to what I'm trying to convey. I'm not sure even I can anymore. Why I'm choosing to express this in an open forum..I have no idea.It must be the biggest scream for help.

Hmm... I know how we feel inside can vastly differ from what we portray to the world, but I never thought of you as a peg that doesn't fit. I think you fit in perfectly fine - at least with us. ;)

I do hear what you're saying, though. It's hard to find that place where we belong. I think the first key (at least this is what I've been trying to tell myself) is to belong to myself. Does that make any sense? Sounds kind of hokey when I say it out loud, but the biggest challenge I face is accepting myself. When I don't accept myself, it feels like others don't accept me, and that's at the heart of every single one of my self doubts.

I can't tell you to believe in yourself, but you should. You're a wonderful, loving girl who maybe is just a bit lost right now.

Different from who? What constitutes someone as being a "somebody"? Are your goals for yourself unattainable? Should you cut yourself some slack?
Heck, I ask myself this stuff all the time. Your answers might fill you in on what you're feeling...

Not a biggie, I am just curious. One possible scenario is that the person who posted it (Alex himself - isn't it considered gauche to quote yourself? ;) ) manually entered it and only put his first name in.

And why am I spending so much time on this?!?

Alex
06-06-2007, 06:09 PM
1. I didn't quote myself. That was an original composition delivered directly to the quote function.

2. It always said "Alex" as the author since that is a freeform field and that is how I entered it (the submitter name is drawn from the userID database so that did update).

3. I don't know why.

I'm feeling quite down. I'm here trying my best to raise my spirits.

Our family had another family as close freinds. They lived here in Garden Grove, Brian and Jean. They have four kids.

Brian is a contractor, and for a while did work for the city of Anaheim, and Disneyland. You know those strange structures on the median on harbour Blvd. with the green glass? He wired the power for the lights. And those red and green lights letting you know that the toll boths are open in the parking lots (Lion King mostly)- yup, he installed them.

About two years ago they moved to South Carolina. They wanted to get away from the crowds and high cost of living. Last night Brian was driving home from a job and lost controll of his truck. They found it upside down and belive he died instantly.

I don't know what to say to Jean, she's a single mom with four kids now. How can you ease the pain when someone is going through something like that. Plus I don't know how to break the news to my wife, it's been so hard on her since her mother's murder, and this is the closest death since then. I tried to call her psyc dr. but she is on vacation till the 13th.

RStar: as far as what to say to Jean... just say you're there for her. And call her in a few weeks and say it again, when all the hubbub quiets down and everyone's done making their "obligatory" calls, and she's no longer busy with the "business" of death. That's when she'll really really need you.

I am also sorry, I did not know about your mother in law. This is going to be a tough one, ease the information on her. How did you find out? Might she find out on her own? {{{hugs}}} to you for strength to deal with this.

A call to Jean, a card. Let her know you are here for her and how much you know her husband is going to be missed. It is true, she will receive a lot of 'obligatory' calls but the ones where she knows you know what she is going through, well, that would mean a lot. Now, but then again, like Morri said, after when the calls probably will have stopped.

I had to put these in different posts, so sorry for the double post....

The Congressman for the district right next to me was indicted earlier this week (http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpage/index.ssf?/base/news-8/1181027654212400.xml&coll=1). He's being arraigned on Friday, and the Ethics committee of Congress has 1 a month to do their investigation separate from the Justice Dept. You may have heard about the raid on his home almost 2 years ago: He had a lot of cold cash. $90,000 in his freezer.

But this town is crazy. #1 - the dude was re-elected last year. (I will admit the woman in the run-off against him wasn't a very viable candidate, either, though.)
#2 - Someone just called into the radio station I listen to in the morning "talk/news/sports" station indicating that she wasn't sure the cash wasn't 'marked' AFTER it was taken out his freezer. Oh yea, everyone stores cash from legal sources in their freezer, when they received marked cash, and the FBI then 'plants' the evidence. Yea, that always happens.

We have met the enemy and he is us.

sooooo...

What kind of medical condition is serious enough to require release from jail but not serious enough to require a trip to the hospital?

Why, the kind of medical condition Paris Hilton has, silly.

Can you imagine what a pain in the ass this whole thing must be to the people of that jail? I bet they'd have supported her departure if she'd demonstrated a distressed cuticle.

Good news- my dog is merely infected, not cancerous.

::relief:: This means a longer course of antibiotics, but at least it's not going to take him from me right now.

He looks really bad, but the lab said there's no tumors, only infection.

I'm so sorry RStar. Don't wait too long telling your wife - I know I'd be peeved if someone kept that kind of information from me (but then it's been almost 17 years since my Aunt was murdered, and Aunt is big time different from Mother). Thanks guys!

I plan to tell her toight. She has agoraphobia since her mother died a year and a half ago and rarely leaves the bedroom, much less the house. She loves the Pirates movies and the last time she went to the movies was to see the last one. So she has been waiting to see this one (had to wait for the crowds to die down and for a chance to go on a Wed. afternoon for less traffic). So, I didn't get a chance to tell her yesterday (not to mention some drama with her sister in texas wanting to move in with us- but I have to put my foot down there. The two of them can't stay in the same state much less the same house without fighting!!).

I'm feeling quite down. I'm here trying my best to raise my spirits.

Thanks for a place to open up and talk a bit. You guys are great!

You can share with her some fond memories and I believe a card, phone call offer of support will always do wonders and are welcome. This is too sad and I'm sorry for the compounded problem you have with relation to relaying the news to your wife.

Yes, I plan to do that today. He's is familiar with her because he is the one maintaining her meds.

Might not the sister's moving in be a cure for the agoraphobia?

Sean Connery, who retired from acting in 2005, has finally, officially, given word that he will not be appearing in the fourth Indiana Jones film.

"I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you on May 22, 2008, at the theater!"

RStar: as far as what to say to Jean... just say you're there for her. And call her in a few weeks and say it again, when all the hubbub quiets down and everyone's done making their "obligatory" calls, and she's no longer busy with the "business" of death. That's when she'll really really need you.

Morrigoon has it completely right. As of right now, she's probably got a lot of people surrounding her. In my experiences, it's always a month later, a few months later, that things get really difficult and lonely. As reality sets in for her, she'll need her friends as much, perhaps even more.
