OK, I had to talk to my wife about Brian. She took it pretty well (as could be expected). Now I need to watch her and see if she has increased nightmars (that was one of her symptoms) or worsening fear of people.

Actually, out of the frightening make-up, the Lonster was a handsome fella. You know, in my opinion, for being released in 1925 this is still the most scariest looking movie monster of all time. No, really!

You know what also used to scare me to pieces? The Twilight Zone episode where an overacting William Shatner sees the "thing" on the plane wing! I was watching the Twilight Zone on the Sci-Fi channel in bed the other night, and that episode happened to be on. I was like, "I'm going to scare myself & watch this before falling asleep!".

What a difference adulthood makes. The "thing" looked like a dude in a cuddly teddy bear suit that got lost on the way of delivering a candy-gram. :( The face is still kinda freaky, however!

Eh, that dude you guys are showing is alright. I thought Orlando Bloom looked damn good at the end of Pirates. Damn good. Hell, I would have made him work for that boot....

I had someone trying to "phish" my bank account this week. That's the second time in about six months. The first time I got an e-mail saying there was a problem with my sign on or password, something like that. The e-mail had all the right logos, it looked exactly like it was from the bank. But I was suspicious and didn't click on the link. (I don't even use the links when the bank informs me about a bill.) Instead I signed in to online banking the usual way and had no problem. I e-mailed customer service to ask about it and they gave me an address to forward the e-mail to so they could investigate.

This time I didn't even bother to open the e-mail, I just forwarded it. But it's annoying and scary all the same.

I just came in from outside. There was a blue jay preening itself on our back fence. He eyeballed me, but quickly dismissed me as a non-threat. Then Chicken made her way to the grass under where he was sitting. I think her presence confused him. He wasn't sure if he should fly off or just see what was going to happen. When I came back in they were still watching each other.

They were really unsure at the pet rescue center, though she looks to be definitely part German Shepard, and some blend of Collie and/or Husky. Her sister looked WAY more like a collie than she did.

She's a sweet thing, and very quiet and shy. She was abused when they found her, so she's taking her time adjusting to things... you know, things like not being beaten and getting food and getting loves. Awww... I miss her so much already! She's really just a sweetheart.

So it's been certainly over a decade since I last dined at a Red Lobster. Before tonight, I would have (and have) described it as the "Olive Garden of seafood."

After tonight (we got a gift card), I owe many apologies to Olive Garden.

The only thing good at Red Lobster is the ceaser dressing and cheddar bay biscuits. No amount of bread or dressing is worth having to ingest the sorry excuse for food I was served. To be fair, the spicing on the fish I had, and the actual piece of fish, were decent. It was the flavored mayonnaise sauce (which they laughably called, "rich lemon sauce" on the menu) that was a culinary crime. As a matter of fact, they had a similar flavored mayonnaise sauce on the chicken that CP ordered that made me assume that their business model pretty much consists of slopping disgusting flavored mayonnaise sauces on varying pieces of perfectly good fish or chicken.

And then there were the lobster and crab stuffed mushrooms. I've had better appetizers from the freezer aisle.

Even with the gift card I feel pretty ripped off.

That's nothing. A couple of years ago, we had dinner with some friends at their choice of restaurant - The Outback Steakhouse. We waited over an hour for a table for the privilege of mediocre (at best) food in a noisy and unfun atmosphere. The wait is crappy, and the food is generally mediocre, but a.) sometimes you just can't wait for the county fair to get your greasy bloomin' onion and b.) they had a really good salad there the last time I went.

It's over-priced mediocre and I remembered that the last time I went.

I have no problem with the chain restaraunts. I live in Bakersfield, that is about all we have. On one of the min streets we have what I call Restaraunt Row. It is chain after chain. First up (going East to West) is Red Lobster, Del Taco, Jack in the Box, Arbys, Road House, Chuy's, Dennys, Macaroni Grill, Chili's, I-Hop, a Chinese Chain, and a combo A&W/Long John Silvers. These are all in one side of the street, in a long line about a mile long.

The worst thing about moving from Oakland to the 'burbs was that I went from a neighborhood with 80 restaurants within walking distance, only two of them chains (Round Table Pizza, KFC) to a neighborhood with 30 restaurants, none within walking distance and almoster every one of them a chain.

Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) owns two restaurants in the area and he recently blogged about how the recent opening of Cheesecake Factory (extremely mediocre food though occasionally I'll walk in for a piece of cheesecake to take home) and P.F. Chang's (why anybody living in the Bay Area would ever feel a desire to eat that truly crappy food I don't know) have had a serious Wal-Mart affect on what few non-chain restaurants are around.

Yeah, I can get non-chain food but it sucks that it is only at the $20 per entree level. I hate the burbs. Recently there was a four hour wait for Cheesecake Factory (which I can semi-understand at the SF Union Square location since it has a great view but we're talking about a restaurant in a shopping mall parking lot).

So rants the guy who has quadrupled his fast food intake since moving out of the city.

I don't necessarily care about "authentic" Chinese food. Hell, I ate at an Indian restaurant the other night that had a steak dish on the menu and the food was good.

Huh. I've always liked PF Chang's. Haven't eaten there in ages though. It's no Mr. K's but it knocks the pants off Panda Express.

Red Lobster - meh. I don't hate it, I'd certainly eat there on a gift card as I am rather fond of fish n' chips (which IS doused in a tartar sauce), and I LURVE their cheesy biscuits, and their clam chowder doesn't suck. On my own dime I'd probably only eat there at someone else's suggestion. Last time I was there I think it was a Mensa lunch or something of that nature (the same people who somehow get me out to the Spaghetti Factory, Mimi's, and a few good hole-in-the-wall places).

There's a great Thai chain called Thai Bite near my office that has awesome food, literally awesome. Okay, not "Toi" awesome, but pretty darn awesome.

And I don't care if it's authentic or not, I love me some Macaroni Grill.

Consider me the chain-loving repository of unwanted gift cards ;)

So many posts about viddles!

My ex-fiancee, who is now one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world, refuses to eat in a chain restaurant! I'm always like, "Mikey, you are such a culinary snob!" He totally agrees. He refuses to dine at an Olive Garden or Red Lobster. Howver, it's not uncommon for him to be seen dining at Mastro's. He's very trendy & high falutin', unlike his dear ol' pal me. :D

I'm not gonna lie- I dig on the chains. I love TGI's & Islands. PF Changs is the hot doggity- I just love their stuff! However, Chin-Chin is the bomb. That's my all-time favorite. :)

If you know me, you know I eat like a farm full of pigs. No, really. It's both creepy & disturbing. It's like, "it's time to slop Ally". :( Yesterday, I had a big ol' monster cheeseburger at the ESPN Zone in the New York, New York, Las Vegas. 30 minutes later, I hit the Cold Stone at Excalibur for cake batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles pounded in (ooh, it tasted just like a little kid's birthday cake!! Mmm-mmm!). Soon after, I was in Barstow at Bob's Big Boy wolfing down a combo. That's TWO big-ass cheeseburgers in one day. All of this after ordering room-service nachos the day before, then attending a wedding and eating not only my cake but my boyfriend's slice. Then, I ordered more nachos AND pie at 2 a.m. It's like I have no shame whatsoever. :(

Here's a simple anecdote as to why I so dislike most chains.

Near our old place in Irvine, we found a wonderful little Italian place. The decor was pleasant, the food was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. Unfortunately, one of its other charms was that it was always nearly empty. You can guess what happened to it.

One of the reasons it was always empty was that there was what I would describe as a chain-level restaurant just down the road. I don't think it was actually a chain, but it had the "feel" of a chain in terms of its trendy atmosphere and the quality of the food (slightly better than Olive Garden, but not particularly good).

And here's the kicker. Not only was the food not as good as our favorite little place, nor was the decor anywhere near as classy, but it was more expensive. And yet that place had a line.

I'm sure we can get all chicken-and-egg with this, but it's getting harder and harder to find truly good food in the casual dining price range, and that ticks me off.

Seriously, though, isn't that just foul?? I'm totally ashamed. I might have to press the edit button and post that I ordered nothing but side salads with oil & vinegar. Except that I did order side salads. With each burger. Topped with gut-busting bleu cheese. :(

I'm trying to think of chains that I dine at & I really can't think of any besides TGI's & Islands. My boyfriend doesn't care for Islands, but I think it's fun & tasty. I haven't been to an Olive Garden in 7 forevers, so I'm not familiar with their menu. To be honest, I don't dine out a whole bunch & I won't touch fast food, so I'm no expert! I do like the Macaroni Grill, however. My younger cousin Brooke is a server at Macaroni Grill, so it's an added bonus if I get to see her! :)

I also think Wood Ranch & The Oudoor Grill are tasty! However, my BFF Mikey that I mentioned in my above post always mentions that you can get much better food at comparable prices at non-chain eateries. It's all a matter of opinion. If you like the place, then dine away! Whether it be Cut or Denny's.

Saddleback Ranch just popped into my mind. I ♥ that place! :)

I'm not much on chains, even the better ones because they tend to feel like noisy cattle cars. However, I submit that people like chains because 1) they think that being in a noisy cattle car is kind of a party and 2) chains provide a level of predictability. As to the first point, well, takes all kinds.

As to the second, however, there's a measure of truth. For every small "find," there are dozens of unspeakably horrible dives. A telling example: here in Petaluma we have "Butter and Egg Days" every year. Our erstwhile favorite bakery was along the main parade route. You would think it would be a big day for them, but no: people were spilling out of the Starbucks down the block even though this place had better desserts and better coffee. Of course, the Starbucks patrons were also ignoring the ancient bad bakery on the other side of it where, like everything else they served there, the coffee creamers were filled with shortening. Lots of crappy bakeries out there.

I am always struck, however, when I have a particularly bad meal at a chain (Chili's) about the corporate decision process that yielded, "Yes, we can, but, no, we won't, make this food just a little bit less bad."

They were leaving the island as I spoke to them, and they hadnt been able to enter the caves at all for the amount of people in them.

anyone know whats going on? Or is it just opening day of nemo crowd? It's opening day. They didn't open the subs until noon because they had a whole press event ceremony this morning.

Seven hours.Assuming that this held true for another half hour (until 7:30 p.m.), one would need to be in line by 7:30 to be able to ride today (assuming that they adhere to the 2-1/2 hours after park closing thing).

It won't be here until 8:30pm.
So I wait and wait and wait.
Every food place on the lot is closed.
Me hungry.
I found a bag of Ruffles and ate it. Now everything's greasy.
Tick tick frick tick tick.
Hurry the heck up.
Everyone's gone except me.
Poor me.
Poor Gemini Cricket.
My first paycheck hasn't come yet.
New hire delay.
Lame.
I have $45 dollars to last me until Friday (payday).
Half of that will be for gas.
Talk about running on empty.
My cellphone doesn't get good reception at my desk.
I need to wait outside at 8:30pm to receive the package.

It would be really useful if the people running the federal clerkship application process would decide whether the December 2007 grads are classed with the May 2007 grads or with the May 2008 grads. It would be really useful if I could know whether I can apply now, or whether I have to wait until September. It's sort of a critical detail.

I just can't be attracted to most of the actors on the Law & Order series's. Most of them came from an HBO show, Oz, and I just can't get beyond seeing them in that sort of setting.

I am totally freakin' bored. Even when I get busy I still feel bored.

I am also getting tired of being asked when I plan to start looking for a new man. Why do I need a man to be happy? My standard response is that I already have a man, he is in training, and he requires my full attention right now.

Aww! {{{Hugs}}}}!! I can so relate to what you are feeling!!

Once upon a time, I was stuck, trapped, prisoner in what had to be the world's most mortifying relationship. :( What was the most awful part of it? In my case, or story, I chose to be prisoner. I will call him "Mr. Rock-Bottom" because that's exactly what he was for me. Also, I'm ironically kinda keepin' on the Law & Order detective theme, because Mr. Rock Bottom was a detective. Prudence can back me up- I leaned on her shoulder a whole bunch during that time & she shared a whole lot of wisdom with me to help me find my focus! Also, my best girlfriend had to spend hours trying to screw on my head straight & another one of my closest girlfriends was begging me leave him.

Mr. Rock Bottom manipulated & lied to me from the get-go, because he certainly couldn't operate on charm. I don't want to ever speak ill about anybody & I wish him nothing but the best, but...YIKES. EEK. I won't even begin to tell this story. It's just that awful. I can't believe I fell so far. However, it was he who made me realize that I needed to get my act together. I broke up with him, & I glued up my act. :)

I swore I would never, ever date again. When my girlfriends tried to "set me up", I would become so frustrated & upset! I was like, "I DON'T WANT TO DATE EVER AGAIN! Why do I need a man to make me feel complete?!?" I decided to remain single. For so long, I tried so hard to make my partners in relationships my "Mr. Right". I just..never could. I had a fear of commitment & I had a history of running away. Especially when it came to the "M" word (marriage).

When I rebuilt my life & started taking care of me & stopped the search, I met somebody. I was definitely not looking! Wouldn't you know that he was "the one"? I've never been so happy in all of my life. :)

Today's princess doesn't need a prince to rescue her! With lots of loving & supportive friends &/or family in her "kingdom", she'll do just fine! She'll also settle for nothing less then her prince charming, who does exist, believe me. :)
