No, we didn't get the pug we wanted to adopt. They told us it was a difficult decision and we were their second choice, but they went with a family who had adopted an abused puppy from them before and wanted a companion for their dog. So, no Sarge/Serge for us.

So, Operation Plan B went into action.

My clients, who own my favorite dog, Gus, have adopted 3 dogs from a place in Manhattan Beach called The Pet Care Company. They have a relationship with a few reputable breeders who provide them with dogs. They are very selective about who they get their puppies from and watch them carefully for weeks before putting them up for sale.

I fell in love with a 5 month old boy pug who is also apricot colored like Sarge (the only 2 I have ever seen with that coloration).

His name is tentively Thurston. He's adorable with an incredibly expressive face. He's on my lap at the moment with his chin on my desk. I think he is asleep.

When things calm down a bit here I'll get some pictures.

Yes, Thurston Howl.

He feels lonely in his crate. He had 2 sisters that he's spent the last 5 months with. So, he slept in bed with us last night. He liked to cuddle with Chris. But, I put him in his crate this morning and he's telling me all about how much he disapproves. Howl, indeed. ;) But, he peed outside, ate all of his food, then pooped outside. Pretty good for a puppy!

We just got our first smart phones as well. I've recently begun using text messaging fairly regularly, so the qwerty is nice for that, and it's definitely nice to be able to look things like addresses, directions, phone numbers, emails I forgot to print out etc. I am NOT setting it to download my email constantly or alert me when there's a new one. It's there when I need to refer to it, it ain't my master. I am considering syncing it to my work calendar if only to take advantage of the feature where it automatically goes into vibrate-only mode during meetings.

I've seen a basset/black lab mix. I had to ask the owner what kind of dog it was.

The oddest combo I've seen was Basset/Great Dane. She was GD sized, white with black spots, was much longer than average (due to that hound gene) and had a wicked tail. She was stronger than her owner. Her name was Clarabelle. Can't remember what her ears looked like but she was an interesting looking dog.

I'd forgotten I'd even placed an absentee bid. Not Valentino, no good Rudy in the auction, but a nice Universal silent film I love, Smouldering Fires. That's it for spending on me now!

We have a baby dragon (more like an eight year old human than a "baby"). I try to take him out of his enclosure on a regular bases to handle him so that he gets used to human interaction.

This morning, he jumped out of my hands. He's done that before, but I've always been able to catch him quickly. This morning, he scrambled along the hallway. As he was passing the cat, the cat went after him, so I had to shift my attention from baby dragon to cat. This allowed dragon to scramble away and get under the bed. At this point, I had to wake Susan and get her involved in the search.

Of course, simply looking under the bed was fruitless. But first, I wanted to make sure that if he did bolt, that no cats got him (one was on the bed and one was very close by: the third cat was in the office). So, I put one cat in the office and locked her in there. The other, Rufio, got let outside (he loves going outside, but we usually don't let him out until after breakfast).

By now, both of us were thinking that we would never see him again. I tore the pillows, sheets, blankets off the bed and then pulled off the mattress. I then lifted up the box spring and we started searching.

Thankfully, after a few minutes of calm panic, I spotted him. Since I was holding up the box spring, I pointed him out to Susan. At first, she didn't see him, but eventually spotted him.

We got him safely back in his enclosure. I put the bed back together (the mattress was a LOT lighter when I took it off - it is amazing what adrenaline can do for you!), grabbed a few pillows and we both flopped down on it, exhausted.

So how was your morning?

BTW: we've never named this one yet (we won't know if it is a boy or a girl for a few months) - any suggestions?

:( sob.

Good for him. He deserves to be a starter. But it sucks for us. Especially when we have to play against him.

This is an odd situation that is going on. Brian Burke said he would only trade Bryz if the deal was right. But he couldn't get an acceptable deal and put him on waivers. Which means they'll be getting next to nothing for him. BB is known for his oddball deals that work out well in the end. But this one is boggling.

So... I'm on this blogging site for real estate agents, and the whole thing runs on a point system that gives you points for posting or responding to things. The more points you have on the blogging site, the higher your profile appears over on the "public" site (localism.com). It makes you designate a "prime market" area, which is a little silly in Southern California because our areas all run into eachother, but whatever, gotta pick one. So I'd had Lake Forest chosen, because it was a little less popular (competition wise) than Mission Viejo, though MV has pricier homes.

Out of 31 agents in Lake Forest, I'd managed to climb in the standings to where just this week I went from number 4 to number 3. But to get to number two, I was going to have to double my points because the two ladies at the top started earlier and are also both very prolific bloggers. I know I'm like number 41 out of all the Orange County agents on this site, so on a whim, I decided to check the Mission Viejo standings. Hmm.... out of 50 agents who have MV as their prime market, NONE of them have 8000 points!

Guess what I did?

(Give you a hint... I'm now #1 in Mission Viejo!)

I have about $50 left over in my flexible spending account so I made a list of OTC medicines I could stock up on before the end of the year. I came across that list today when I was looking for my prescription sunglasses and I realized I spent nearly $500 on two pairs of glasses this year and I never asked to be reimbursed for that...

I bought some spray roses at Trader Joe's today. I just started buying cut flowers again last week because it's been too hot in my place since the spring. I got home and looked for them and realized I'd left them in the cart. There was no way I was going back, it was too far and I had other things to do and I felt stupid. But I looked at the receipt to see how much money I wasted and the flowers weren't even on there. Saved from my own stupidity by a clerk who was just as addled as I was.

Yep! There is more than enough to keep me busy, but not so much that I am overwhelmed. The girl training me did not show up for her last day, so Friday I was on my own. I was able to organize my desk so that I can better keep track of what needs to be done and prioritize the orders.

Each morning I go for a loooonnnggg walk, from one end of the complex to the other, collecting paperwork. It is a nice way to start the day.

This company is so unlike any place I have ever worked. We have a full kitchen, which is kept stocked with food. We are to help ourselves. If it doesn't have someone's name on it it is community property.

They had planned a pizza party for the girl who left. Even though she was a no show they still did it.

My schedual is going to be 7:00/7:30-4:30. But it is very flexable. I was even told that if there is a problem with Nickolas I can bring him in with me.

Jaffle?

Lashbear will be more erudite, I am sure, but here is Wikipedia's explanation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich_toaster)

OK - Tis true they're also known as "Brevilles", and the original jaffle irons were just a metal clamshell on long handles:
http://www.rvsupplywarehouse.com/content/product/small/round-jaffle-pie-iron.jpg

But the one I use looks kind of like this.... Imagine this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Sandwich_toaster_open.jpg

...But washed and clean..

Then imagine it doesn't have the diagonal cutters, and there are two chambers like large square scallops - Here's a partial pic of it:
http://www.buyquick.com.au/shopimages/products/BR-SG2300.jpg

Lay a sheet of puff pastry over the recepticles, dollop the filling into it, fold the rest of the sheet over the filling, then close the two halves and cook for 3-5 mins.

I prefer to use pastry rather than bread as it seals a little better .

My favourite recipe for Cornish Pasty Filling:

Breville pasties
125g lamb mince, cooked and chopped
125g mixed chopped vegetables, cooked
1 cup mashed potato
1 egg
1 teaspoon mixed herbs
salt and pepper
1 sheet pre-rolled puff pastry

1. Combine steak, vegetables, potatoes, egg, herbs and seasoning, mix until well combined.
2. Lay pastry over plates.
3. Place in filling.
4. Fold pastry over and cook until lightly golden brown and crisp.

Yummo !!

So we were in Las Vegas this weekend for a wedding. I noticed in our room at the Luxor that there was a phone mounted right next to the toilet. This isn't an entirely new phenomenon to me, I've seen it before in hotels, but for some reason I've been seeing it far more frequently recently.

Because I'm 5 years old, I decided it would be hilarious to pick up the phone while I was sitting on the toilet and call CP's cell phone. It was off, charging, so I left her a message.

It was only a few hours later that it suddenly occurred to me that I just made a long distance call from a hotel room phone.

Yeah, that "hilarious" joke cost me $12

Is it just that as you've gotten older you start staying at nicer hotels? The phone in the bathroom thing has been pretty constant for higher end business friendly hotels for my adult experience.

And you can't put a price on humor so I'd have told the Luxor that you weren't paying.

No, I've stayed in nice hotels for most of my life. Either I just haven't noticed, or, by luck of the draw, I often ended up in ones without it. Or maybe it's that the last few I've seen have been right next to the toilet. *shrug*

I once stayed in a Hilton in Minneapolis that had two phones in the bathroom. One right above the other and both conveniently placed for use while on the can.

Couldn't quite wrap my brain about who decided that was a necessary thing.

How about TV's in the bathroom (with the speakers in the ceiling). We experienced that at the Paris Las Vegas on our last stay (granted we were bumped up the top floor due to overbooking).

Ironically, there WASN'T a phone in the restroom - just a TV.

Lay a sheet of puff pastry over the recepticles, dollop the filling into it, fold the rest of the sheet over the filling, then close the two halves and cook for 3-5 mins.

I prefer to use pastry rather than bread as it seals a little better .

My favourite recipe for Cornish Pasty Filling:

Breville pasties
125g lamb mince, cooked and chopped
125g mixed chopped vegetables, cooked
1 cup mashed potato
1 egg
1 teaspoon mixed herbs
salt and pepper
1 sheet pre-rolled puff pastry

1. Combine steak, vegetables, potatoes, egg, herbs and seasoning, mix until well combined.
2. Lay pastry over plates.
3. Place in filling.
4. Fold pastry over and cook until lightly golden brown and crisp.

Yummo !!

Yay! I have a sandwich maker like the top one... I can totally use that Cornish Pasty recipe... thanks Lash! :snap:

Speaking of Vegas, we didn't have a ton of time to ourselves there since our main purpose was the wedding, but we did get a chance to see a couple of the new-to-us hotels that have gone up since our last visit.

THEbotel This is what they've galled the new tower at Mandalay Bay. It has to be THEstupidest name I've heard...for THEnicest looking place I've been in. The happy couple stayed here, and they rented out a 60th floor suite for a casual after-wedding party. I was impressed from the moment we walked out of the Casino into this new structure. Ultra-modern decor, but super stylish. The architecture of the entry hallway really caught my eye, as well as the choice of art. Were I ever to want to spend the cash on a nicer place to stay in Vegas, this would definitely contend.

The Wynn: Not at all what I expected. I was expecting posh, ultra-elegance, possibly to the point of having a snobby air. It's not at all. It's certainly elegant, but with much more of a sense of fun and whimsy than I had figured. Definitely more inviting than I expected. I was particularly impressed with the whole area around "Parasol Down", the small lounge down stairs near reception. Fun moving art hanging from the ceiling, the breathtaking water-fall feature out the door, and flanked by a pair of curved escalators! Would love to see the mechanics of that, I noticed that each had a particularly expansive runout at the bottom, I imagine it's pretty complex. I also loved the series of arched doorways with wood surrounds sculpted to evoke the look of pulled back curtains.

Vegas may be the capital of garishally over dramatic design, but when they get something right, it's pretty impressive.

If you liked the curved elevator then you might want to visit the San Francisco Chopping Center. It has a four story curved escalator (not in one long block, with landings at each floor).

Is the one at Wynn of changing curve angles? That would be niftier.

Is the one at Wynn of changing curve angles? That would be niftier. No, same degree of curve the whole way. I figured it wasn't the first of its kind, but it was the first I'd seen. And some cursory research shows that they're still pretty rare. The whole presentation is great because it's set up to look like your standard grand stairway entrance, with a curved staircase going up either side...but they're escalators.

I think I need to goHeh, having just returned from Chicago and New York where we visited the 94th, 103rd, and 86th floors of the Hancock, Sears Tower, and Empire State respectively, 60 was kinda pedestrian (though the wall-o-glass that ran the length of the suite was quite picturesque).

1) He'd kill me for spending $400 on him right now
2) It isn't the computer he wants, he wants a newer, reconditioned Mac (still 2 grand)
3) Did I mention he'd kill me for spending $400?

Speaking of intuition - I am selling my old phone and all the accessories on eBay. My BIN price is not unreasonable for what it is; neither is my starting offer. I received a message asking me to lower the BIN price by $50 because they feel it's to high. I'm not going to, and I want to reply that they can BIN for what I am asking or bid. They are new (2 feedback this month) but I have a bad feeling about it. I had a bad feeling before I saw that they had only had a 2 rating.

I'm sitting on my reply until I can decide if I want to block the user from bidding. I have a feeling that there are going to be payment problems if she wins.

I'm not necessarily saying not to do it. I'd only do it if I had someone decent to hang out with who's a good sport about stuff like that, or I had something really fun to do, like play on a PSP or something... The downside is that they often just have one or two of an item. I went last year for a laptop that was $200 with sweetness written all over its specs... sure enough, they only had a couple and I wandered around Best Buy hoping they'd have a decent price on CD-RWs.

OK... I'm ready to jump on the Hi-Def DVD bandwagon. Here's the dilemma of the week: HD-DVD players can be had for around $150, while Blu-Ray machines start at more than twice that. Disney/Pixar is exclusively Blu-Ray, so it looks like Blu-Ray wins in this household (at least for now). This weekend, Wal-Mart will be having a "secret sale" - $499 for a 80GB PS3 with 10 free movies (plus 5 more by mail). But is it worth spending the $$ for a game console that I will probably never use for anything but movies? Should I just buy the movies and wait for a cheaper player after Christmas? Should I wait for Blu-Ray to lose the format wars and pick up the Disney movies when they come out in HD-DVD?

I know that this is a ridiculous dilemma - but does anyone have any opinions?
