When run regularly, our Roomba picked up pet hair and random floor debris with no problem. Its holding chamber is maybe a little small, but other than that it worked as it should.

It's done charging, so I'm now testing it out in the office. So far, it picked up all three cat fur tufts, all the kitty litter in front of the box (including on the litter mat), the little bit of bunny bedding, the few bits of hay, and is now moving the vertical blinds to clean up the bird seed underneath.
With one of these, who needs a husband? ;)
I'm in love. :snap: Now, I have to tell poor Ken that I'm having an affair. ;)

I have a similar problem with "Hoover." I keep reading it as
"Free from gross passion or of mirth or anger
constant in spirit, not swerving with the blood,
garnish'd and deck'd in modest compliment,
not working with the eye without the ear,
and but in purged judgement trusting neither?
Such and so finely bolted didst thou seem."

We have laminate wood flooring. I'm hoping it lives up to its expectations or I'm taking it back.
Besides kitty litter, we also have bunny bedding, bird food, and fur tufts on the floor daily. If it picks up those things, I'll be very happy.
I've been wanting one. You'd think Tango was 6 cats the amount of fur she leaves floating around. Just 1 domestic short hair and she sheds like mad!

I had a good audition last week. I'm up for Javert in Les Mis with a local company. I'm currently in rehearsals for "Ghosts of Treasure Island" with Oregon Children's Theatre. Pirates, fights, muskets and rockin' music! I've been approached to play Daddy in "Annie Warbucks" this summer. I don't know if I can do that and Les Mis, but I'm not holding my breath - competition is pretty fierce for Les Mis, with another round of auditions in New York later this month.
I've been on two dates in the last month. (But that's another story!)

That's it. I've been watching Ax Men (http://www.history.com/minisites/axmen) on the history channel. So I'm going back to my original career choice. Logger. I can set chokers (we praticed for fun in the back yard), drive a skidder, sort of drive a Cat but I'm sure with pratice I'd improve.
Where can you go to work wearing suspenders? They haven't been in since Re-Run. Learn colorful phrases like "that'll pucker your butt". Use chewing tobacco on the job. Then there's the beer. None of that fancy schmancy stuff either. Plus I know that boraxo is pratcially the only thing that will get the pitch off you, that in combination with lava soap.
I've got my Women in Logging bumper stickers around here somewhere. If the rest of my family can do it, so can I. Plus you get winters off. Oh sure you don't get paid but oh well. And I can use my Dad's log proof lunchbox (an amunition box) so I'll always have my lunch even if a log breaks loose and squashes it.
Not to mention the exercise (although most of these guys look like they never get up off the couch). It's very demanding. And dangerous so that'll keep me on my toes. All my dad ever lost was the tip of a finger and that got sewed back on. As long as I don't have to be a faller because, well I am kind of wary of chain saws. They don't exactly cut through legs they kind of just mangle them.
I'm off to be a third generation logger. Wish me luck!

Really need help. MUST GO!!!
Date: 2007-11-02, 5:03PM EDT
Please help! After two long years of being on a waiting list for a dog, we have been notified by breed rescue that, at long last, our number has come up and ... WE ARE HAVING A PUPPY!
We must get rid of our children IMMEDIATELY because we just know how time consuming our new little puppy is going to be and it just wouldn't be fair to the children. Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we MUST place the children up for adoption this weekend!
They are described as:
One male -- his name is Tommy, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent disposition. He doesn't bite. Temperament tested. Does have problems with peeing directly in the toilet. Has had chicken Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils have already been removed. Tommy eats everything, is very clean, house trained and gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors and with a little training he should be able to read soon.
One female -- her name is Lexie, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), strawberry blonde hair, green eyes quite freckled. Two years old. Can be surly at times. Non-biter, thumb sucker. Has been temperament tested but needs a little attitude adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils out, and is very healthy and can be affectionate. Gets along well with other
little girls and little boys but does not like to share her toys and
therefore would do best in a one child household. She is a very quick learner and is currently working on her house training. Shouldn't take long at all.
We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what's right for them. That is why we contacted a rescue group. But we simply can no longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that they may hurt our new puppy.
I hope you understand that ours is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real emergency here! They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the latest or we will be forced to drop them off at the orphanage or along some dark, country road. Our priority now has to be our new puppy.

Leaping from tree to tree! As they float down the mighty rivers of
British Columbia! With my best girl by my side!
The Larch!
The Pine!
The Giant Redwood tree!
The Sequoia!
The Little Whopping Rule Tree!
We'd sing! Sing! Sing!
Oh, I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.
CHORUS: He's a lumberjack, and he's okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
I go to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
He goes to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays 'e goes shoppin'
And has buttered scones for tea.
CHORUS
I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing,
And hang around in bars.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around.... In bars???????
CHORUS
I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies?? and a .... a Bra????
(spoken, raggedly) What's this? Wants to be a *girlie*? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!

So, I'm afraid that my chicken and rice casserole is different than the last one I made, but I'm not sure what it is. In some ways it's totally better... The ratio is the problem on a lot of the special edition Reese's Peanut Butter Cups they've been making in recent years. When I was up in Alaska last August I stumbled across one that was nearly as perfect as a regular one but now I can't remember which one it was.

Precisely because of the pb:c ratio. I'm not that hot on chocolate.

When it comes to Reese's, I am very particular: They must be the Miniatures and I definitely prefer them very fresh (which have been hard to come by lately).
Precisely because of the pb:c ratio. I'm not that hot on chocolate.
Here's the weird thing: I would very happily just eat the PB filling with a spoon, no chocolate in site. But if it is to be eaten with the chocolate the balance is very picky to me.
Morrigoon: I have no doubt they are better but the best plan is probably to just not eat any of them. Especially since there are usually peanut butter cups nearby.

The wedding is going to be awesome! I'm back home for a couple hours to recharge the camera batteries (and mine).
I got some great footage of them buying their wedding ears, and then we trekked over to TSI for a little while and also got trampled by a large gaggle of Japanese tourists while trying to board the Columbia.
They're having lunch at Blue Bayou right now, then having a portrait drawn and heading back to their hotel for a little R&R before tonight. :)
It's funny - people think we're filming a commercial because of my camera. ;)

Munchkin (and all rabbits for that matter) occasionally settles into a position we call the "bunny hen". Every time, I think "Bock bock bock bock" to myself and hope to find a creme egg underneath.

Oh, and a funny moment was caught on tape this morning, when I was talking to Nephy about women who wait (for sex) until they are married (keep in mind we didn't say exactly what we were referring to, since her daughter was present) -
Nephy to me: I think it's important for a woman to make sure she's getting a bratwurst instead of a Vienna Sausage, know what I mean?
Nephy's 8-year-old daughter: But, I like Vienna Sausages! They're yummy!
The poor kid couldn't figure out why we burst out laughing after she said that. :D

So we moved our entire television setup upstairs into the bedroom last night (minus the stereo). That's a 42" TV, TiVo, DVD player, HD cable box, Wii. With those come an HDMI cable, a composite video connection, a component connection, 1 s-video, 2 sets of RCA audio cables, 2 coax cables w/splitter, and 5 power cords. It also required completely rearranging the bedroom furniture to accommodate. And did it all in under 40 minutes.

This is the least of our distractions. We've gone from living in a 2 story, 2 bedroom condo to living in a virtual studio apartment while they destroy our first floor and put it back together. We're managing pretty well, but getting the TV in there will make it that much more palatable.

don't you need a new fangled HD camera yet... At the tune of $8,999.00 for the XLH1 (I prefer to stick with the Canon XL series), that piece of equipment will have to wait awhile longer. For now, my XL2 gets plenty of respect (besides great footage), and was still featured as a desired pro camera at CES this year.
Anyway, I'm trying to find the number to that bus that apparently ran me over yesterday. I am SO wiped! And, I have to go meet my sister back at the park today. It's already taking everything I can to move. Ugh. I also have to hook up with two other friends who are in town there, and I also volunteered to squat a spot for fireworks for Nephy and her family. So, I really have to go.
But, it doesn't stop there. We had already volunteered to help out with a friend's 50th birthday party tomorrow afternoon out in San Bernardino, and from there, we are going to a margarita-soaked game night out in Reseda. We didn't realize they were the same day when we first said, "Sure!". But, it's not like my brain has been all that functional lately. And, now, I'm really looking forward to those margaritas to end a crazy week.
I don't think I'll get out of bed at all on Sunday. Yikes!
I really try to not get back into the habit of crazy weeks, but somehow, it just happened again. It probably wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for driving to Vegas every other weekend and trying to handle stuff there too.

Morrigoon, perhaps now's the time to tell you ... the reason we never returned your shade pavilion that we borrowed for the last beach bonfire was that is was DESTROYED by the wind.
Yes, that's right, Destroyed.By.The.Wind.
All the poles were bent by the force of the seaside gales, and they no longer fit where they're asupposed to.
We never got to even attempt to assemble my reasonably-similar (and similarly cheap) shade pavilion - - which I will bequeath to you at Swank Camp.

There is a restaurant within walking distance called Riley's. It used to be a Love's and was purchased by an individual when the chain went out of business. I like it, but Susan is not fond of it. So we have a routine down where she phones in an order for a personal pizza from the Round Table in the same shopping center, I walk up to Riley's, put in my order, walk to Round Table to pick up her pizza and by the time I walk back to Riley's, my order is ready.
Except last night. When I discovered that Riley's went out of business.
Now, this may not be all that noteworthy until this morning, I decided that I was in the mood for a bagel from West Coast Bagel (an old Western Bagel location in Tustin). Much to my chagrin, I discovered that they ALSO went out of business.

If you want the bacon crispy, at the very end, when it's almost completely cooked through, turn the heat up and let things catch fire for a bit. It'll crisp the bacon and give the asparagus a bit of a char on the outside without burning things completely.

I am planning on getting in at 8. It's very difficult to gauge the traffic out here in Utah, since it's either awesome or sucky in the morning, though generally sucky and worse with a wreck on the freeway. I've learned of alternate routes that I will investigate, though from what I understand it can be a 'six one way half-dozen the other' kind of situation.
This morning, I realized it was a waste to stay in bed when I could snuggle up with my cat and do the whole internet thing, since it'll be a little while before I feel comfortable to do much surfing at work.
Which reminds me: work was awesome today - though I'm exhausted. I'll try and write about it tomorrow.

swanie - I think you should adopt all of them. :)

Okay, I know this will have a huge ick factor but here goes...
I woke up this morning at about 3am with hives. I checked on WedMD and a couple of other sites and that's what it be.
At first I thought it was poison oak. But then I said to myself, I don't hike and don't plan to until the camping trip. But I did thoroughly vacuum and dust the apt, so I thought it might have been present in the rugs or something. But the hives are only in certain areas. I figure poison oak could be all over or in random areas.
I also found out that hives often occur in the upper arm and upper thigh area. And that's where I have them.
So I went to Longs and bought some Benadryl and calamine lotion. I took the Benadryl and should be unconscious in about a half hour. The calamine lotion was just to help with the itch factor. It helped a little.
Funny thing - I went to Longs on Ventura and Laurel Canyon and the three man crew that ran the place overnight were sleeping on lawn chairs in the parking lot. As soon as I pulled up, they sprang into action "cleaning" the parking lot area in front of them. Uh, yeah. I've been a manager before. Slacker fvcks. :D
Anyway, I feel gross and itchy, itchy, itchy.
Grrrr.
I guess hives just appear and disappear. I hope they go away soon.
Anyone have them before?
At first, I thought it was an allergic reaction to laundry detergent or dryer sheets, but I did laundry three days ago. I'm thinking it would have affected me right away if it was that...

Now, this may not be all that noteworthy until this morning, I decided that I was in the mood for a bagel from West Coast Bagel (an old Western Bagel location in Tustin). Much to my chagrin, I discovered that they ALSO went out of business.

My initial response is algebra, but all three are very different and it really depends on what makes more sense to you. I'm generally really good at math, obviously, but I HATE "finite math", never fully grasped it. So you never know.

I don't even know what finite math is. I suck at Stats, I remember taking and dropping that class a few years ago.
Math sucks.
Based on the context of the three you listed I'm guessing "finite math" does not equal the phrase that is synonymous with "discrete mathematics" but rather the name given by many schools to generic math classes for non-science majors that covers the basics of stats, algebra, trig, calc without going into any great detail in them (I was really confused for a while when looking at maybe getting an MBA at the number of them that required finite math which I took to mean discrete mathematics which seemed way unnecessary for an MBA). From your list, personally I'd find stats the most fascinating, algebra the most day-to-day functional and the "business school math" the easiest.
Ghoulish Delight
03-25-2008, 09:38 AM
Oh, okay. Yeah, I was thinking it meant Discrete Math as well (which is the branch of mathematics concerned with set theory and number theory). And, now that I've gone and looked up a formal definition of discrete math, I like it better than I thought. For some reason I was lumping it in with series and convergence which is what I struggle with.
Anyway, yeah, if that's not what was meant by Finite Math, then what Alex said.

Stats is pretty interesting stuff, and not as scary as people like to make it out to be. The math involved is really rather mechanical, just a few fairly straight forward formulas for the most part. It's all about the correct implementation of those formulas.

I guess hives just appear and disappear. I hope they go away soon.
Anyone have them before?
More times than I can count. I used to get them chronically and take daily medication to prevent them. That hasn't been necessary for years, but I still get episodes once in a while.
Keep an eye on them. I have to take prednisone to clear up an episode of hives. The last time I didn't hit the steroid right away I ended up with one eye swelling shut and my joints starting to freeze up. Not that this would happen to you or anything, it's just a caution to not dismiss them if they start to spread or look like they're getting worse.
Otherwise, dose up on the benedryl and take a nap until it stops itching.

I had an allergic reaction to fabric treatment on a new shirt I bought at the gap. It started out as hives in the shape of a shirt on my body which then spread all over. It took 3 days for it to go away. It was completely awful and, while benedry and calamine helped, it ended up just having it run its evil course.
Stats was the MOST evil math course I had to take - and I had to take stats 1 and 2. I thought I was going to DIE.

I took Stats in college can't remember which year and i got an A in the class. The tests were a breeze and i am not smart when it comes to math seriously wasn't until college did i get A's in my math classes. Maybe it was the teachers themselves i don't know. Good luck.

Wow! Amazing stuff!
NA, you are bad!
Quality of teacher helps a lot for stats. Advanced statistics is incredibly math intensive but for the most part the type of stats you do in intro/seminar classes can almost be done without math. The math lets you get the exact answer but with proper guidance through the logic of statistics the approximate answers can be worked out in your head. So a teacher that gets through the logic first and follows with the math will, I find, be much more successful.
An understanding of basic statistics is an incredibly useful skill since the misapplication of statistics is probably the primary source of manipulation and misdirection used. It doesn't take a Ph.D's understanding of the field to see through a lot of misuse.

At least, my decision making process is headed that way. I've never actually been embarrassed to sign my name as the attorney of record on a lawsuit until this week. That's really the last straw. This job was awesome until things seriously started to slide last year, and it seems that my boss is telling me that we're going to take certain actions to correct that.. and then NO actions are actually taken.

I just received an email that a dear friend of mine passed away. His name was Stu Nevitt and he was the drummer for a band called Shadowfax. Stu took me under his wing about 23 years ago, first as a teacher, then as a mentor, then as a musical collaborator. He was a Grammy award winner. A few years after he won, we wrote a song together for an upcoming album called "Esperanto" and that album was nominated for a Grammy as well.
Throughout the years, we played in bands together, wrote music, and enjoyed each others company. He was a gifted musician and a dear friend and I'm going to miss him terribly.

We'll see. I am taking it in the summer, so I can take it again in the fall if I need to.
BTD, FWIW, I've always had an easier time getting through my maths in summer courses. I have similar troubles with math (took me 2 tries per semester to get through Algebra I in jr. high/high school, 3 tries to pass Algebra II in high school/college), but every time I made it through with a passing grade was in a summer course. Incidentally, I eventually got smart - took college algebra as a summer course and passed on the first try, but not without much personal wrangling and a few talks with the instructor to explain what kind of help I was looking for when I raised my hand during his lectures.
My biggest problem with math classes is that I don't "speak" math, and math professors, of course, do. They assume you know/remember/can apply things that I can't necessarily, and since we don't "speak" the same language, they have a very hard time understanding what I'm asking so they often just repeat themselves without offering any new info. What helped me was to speak with the prof early on in the course, and let him know that my problem was often that of communication, and that I have to write down absolutely every step (including those they skip because they think we can make the logical leap on our own), and that if I ask a question, I'll be very direct about the info I need, and if he can use different words to answer my question, then often that will do it. Oh, I remember... I explained to him that while he speaks "math", I speak "verbal"... and so what I had to do in note taking was to translate everything he was saying in his "math" language, into my "verbal" language, and write that in my notes to be re-read and actually processed later.
If that sounds familiar, BTD, I'd try that.
If not, find out when their office hours are, and be there every week. I think that's how I passed financial markets (which sounds cool but ended up being the highly mathematical process of options pricing - eek!). I'm almost positive it was a pity C ;)
