Small vent ahead:
I am so glad today is over. I was busier today than I had been all week. At 4:25 I get a request from someone that the fax machines were broken. Said person first emailed the incorrect person (who emailed tech support) and had her manager call after she deemed that 25 minutes without a response is unacceptable (we have an hour to reply). I explained to the manager I was super slammed but would look at it before I left. Manager was OK with that answer and told her so. I went to look at it, and talk to "everyone else" who was having issues - no one else was having issues, only her; and as her history goes, she tries to blame IT when she screws up. So, I let her manager know that everything is working, no one else that she claimed was having trouble is having trouble. Manager is happy with the resolution. Said person decides to start arguing with me at 4:58 about it. Directed her to her manager.
At 4:55 someone decides to ask me to do something that IT doesn't do to do because someone else wasn't trained properly. Directed them to follow procedure to fix the issue. They started arguing with me about it. Directed them to their manager.
Note to everyone: Don't send critical issues to IT at 5 minutes to 5 after you've been sitting on them all day. A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine. Especially when it's not our issue to fix to begin with.
There is no unapproved OT and I was already on 30 minutes. No way to fix the issues so I left. I'm sure I'll have nasty grams on Monday.
ETA: lest I come across as an insensitive bitch, had these issues been IT issues I would have fixed them.

I was starting to think this was "GD loses the consumer gamble" week. First, without road hazard protection, I get a nail in my tire. Now my phone's busted. It can make and receive calls, but the display is nothing but back-lit blue. I've rebooted it, pulled the battery out, smacked it around. Nada.
So I was kicking myself for choosing not to get the phone protection plan as part of my wireless package. But I just took a look, and I think I'm going to come out "ahead" in this. I went into a Sprint store. They couldn't do anything because they don't have a service guy on site, and the closest one that does is closed on the weekends. But they guy figured it'd be ~$50-$60 to repair the phone. The protection plan costs $7/month. I've owned this phone for 20 months. So, $50-$60 vs. $140. I win.

I think I'm gonna go back to my old favorite headphones, a pair of Grado SR60s - sure they don't look very stylish, but for the price they're quite good headphones - and no need for a dedicated headphone amp either.
I've tried quite a few earphones over the years. I hate anything that completely covers my ears (that just results in sweaty ears and I assume I look like a dork like all the people on the bus).
It's surprising but I must give my endorsement to the default iPod earbuds. They provide good enough sound (for me) and they don't fall out while I'm running (yes, I can run) and they don't make my ears hurt like most other earbuds.

Yeah, I have no illusions that the sound quality is great. But I don't listen to music. The only reason I ever listen to my iPod is as a white noise generator (essentially). Either I'm tuning out the sounds of a gym or the sounds of the office. Six months with the current selection of songs on there and I still couldn't much tell you what's on there.
So the only really important thing to me is comfort and I'm surprised as how comfortable I find them.

So, tonight was okay, though I didn't do as well on a midterm as I had hoped. An 82. A respectable B, considering I have two ace papers in the hole, but only an 82. Bleh. The worst part is that I couldn't come up with the specific word he was looking to see. I covered the meaning to enough of a degree, the effects, etc - which I think made him incline toward leniency - but I'm just disappointed.
I think I was just expecting more of myself from this class. Given that I've done a stellar job in my Business Law class, my hopes were too high. I should cut myself some slack, though - I'm missing several classes that are fundamental to success in this class, according to the professor (though he doesn't know my situation specifically). In light of that, I'm probably doing really well.
I'm going to start busting some ass now so I can get an A on the final. Or at least a B. A B would be nice.

We just got home from our El Capitan adventure. We only encountered a few of the Hollywood wierdos, but then we stayed in the area of the Kodak and the El Capitan. A couple were dressed up as Wolverine and Storm. Storm had on a really bad, yellow wig and she was not in the least bit attractive. The wolverine guy was much better in his character. We didn't linger long to watch them. I can't believe the amount of "vendors" that come out at night with there Coleman stoves and try to push "bacon dogs" and what looked like either bad polish sausage or bad linguica. There was also some Japanese talk show shooting in front of the Kodak, which just cause more conjestion in that area.
What I don't understand is why people, when driving through the Grapevine, refuse to move out of the fast lane. They aren't going fast enough to be there and there are 3 other lanes to be in, why can't they move over? Then there was the idiot behind me when I was in the next lane over, who felt I should move into the truck lane so he could pass me. I was going 80, and there were trucks in the truck lane. Jerk actually though flashing his lights at me would get me to move. I felt justified when he rode his brakes all the way doen the last grade and I passed him. I take pride in knowing my vehicle and knowing the grade well enough to not touch my brakes all the way down. Heck, I am almost afraid to use my brakes on the hill. I have dreams where I lose my brakes, so I just make sure I don't go faster than the curves allow.
It is now after 2 and I am not quite ready to go to bed yet. Thank goodness I don't have to be at my sister-in-law's until 7pm tomorrow.

Strangler: not totally the exception. I didn't speed till well into my 20's and still have a reputation for generally driving like a granny.
I've engaged in stereotypical youth speeding behaviors 2.5 times:
Once I raced a guy home from an American Legion meeting we were forced to attend. I was in an Oldsmobile sedan and my friend was in a souped up Pontiac muscle car of some sort. The freeway was crowded so to maintain my lead I had to creatively use other cars to block him. We topped 100 miles an hour that night.
Shortly after that I drove almost 80 mph on a long straight but residential street, after dark.
For some reason after those two I just decided I was being really stupid and never did it again.
The half was when I was 24 and driving a rented Pontiac from Portland to Tijuana. Somewhere around 2 a.m. on a long straight stretch somewhere between Redding and Sacramento I got to wondering how fast it could go. Turns out it was governor regulated to 107 miles per hour. Scared the **** out of me when it hit that and the engine went "clunk." But that was on a stretch of interstate with no other car in site. So the only thing I was likely to kill was myself (and the friend sleeping oblivious to it all in the passenger seat).

I think I've decided I like the Craig Ferguson talk show. It's not LOL funny, but it's sort of ongoing mild amusement funny.
And he's cute and has a British Isles accent ;)
I try to watch his monologue and then tune out unless he is interviewing someone I know is intelligent enough. The disdain that Ferguson has for stupid guests makes for poor interviews most of the time.

I shouldn't say this, but Kelsey Grammar is hot. So's David Hyde Pierce. And as long as I'm admitting strange celebrity crushes... I know it's SOOOO wrong, but Christopher Walken is totally hot too.
I seem to have gotten over thinking Emeril is hot. Or maybe he just got old on me. Or perhaps I just got totally bored with his schtick after visiting one of his restaurants and deciding I didn't like his food?
...I should go to bed, shouldn't I?

I have always regularly gone faster than the speed limit, but never in heavy traffic and I never weave across lanes to accomplish it. If I'm on a very empty long straight stretch of freeway, I have no qualms approaching 100mph. I have been pulled over twice for speeding (both times as a teen), ticketed once. I do not consider speed as de-facto dangerous driving.
I can't imagine that a Prius maintains its fuel efficiency advantage at 100mph.

What I don't understand is why people, when driving through the Grapevine, refuse to move out of the fast lane. They aren't going fast enough to be there and there are 3 other lanes to be in, why can't they move over?I got to experience that on the Camp Swank trek - more noticeable on the return trip going up the Tejon Pass side. "Oh, you mean I need to press my gas peddle a little more when I start going up a hill to maintain the same speed?"

I am also running the backyard sprinklers for a cycle to give them some extra water and cool things down a bit. Pooh, who tries to avoid water, ended up laying in the sprinklers. He kept grinning at me from the mist.
I had to bump up my ac to 81 to keep it from not shutting off, at 78 it seemed like it ran for over an hour.

When I first lost weight in early 2006, most of my family (as I later found out) was talking behind my back about me possibly being on drugs. If it makes you feel better, losing weight is certainly not a sign of doing drugs.
But of cancer. When my grandfather suddenly lost a lot of weight we all congratulated him on how great he looked (he didn't tell anybody he was sick until the very end). Then he died.
Feel better? I should probably practice my warm fuzzies.

In other Soooooo..... news if I believed in luck as anything other than coincidence I'd be moving to Vegas. I've come out ahead on my last two visits to gambling establishments. I won every game I played at the county fair last weekend. I played poker online last night for the first time in about 6 months and promptly won the first sit-and-go ($50 on $10) and then came in 6th in a 571 person tournament ($35 on $2) and doubled a $20 buy-in playing blackjack.
If I thought buying a ticket would significantly increase my chances of winning, I might even consider a lottery ticket.

I would think that at the top of the list would be any form of cancer that could result in amputation.
Second place I would give to esophageal.
I don't know if I should pick a number. Even if I don't believe in luck it can breed disappointment. Last time we were in Reno (about 9 months ago, not part of the current streak) as we were getting out of the car I joked to Lani that once we were inside I was going to put $100 on 8 at the first roulette table I saw.
Of course, as we walked past that first roulette table we stopped to watch and it came up 8.

We both enjoyed it. It wasn't great, but it wasn't sucktastic either. I usually guage a movie by how many times I look at my watch. With POTC III I looked 3-4 times. Ratatouille, none. EA, once.
It is just hard to strike a balance in movies that we see in theaters. There aren't many 'kid' movies worth watching, but he isn't quite ready to handle a more adult theme. Then I have the added hang up with him, if it is real, or has a shred of reality (Dante's Peak, Volcano, Twister ect...) he will have issues. If it is total fantasy (LotR, HP) he is fine with it. The only way I know if there will be a problem is the questions I start to get in the hours following him seeing something he can't handle.
Surf's Up is pretty good, not Ratatouille good but I liked it.

Takes some getting used to.In the past 13 years, this is the second time I've shaved it, the first being 5 years ago, almost exactly. The last time, it couldn't grow back fast enough. I looked like an adolescent and the lack of beard highlighted the extra face fat I was carrying.
This time...I might keep it off for a while.

And stay inside, it's bloody hot even for Vegas. Oh and most importantly stay away from men wearing trench (http://www.fox5vegas.com/news/13632248/detail.html)coats while in Vegas.
First of all, I didn't know it was a LoT tradition. Oddly enough, it's what I do almost every time I go to Vegas, but not necessarily the first thing I do. #8 is my favorite number.
Actually, many a Vegas trip has started with putting it all (all I was planning on losing in the first place) on Red or Black. If I win, I take the "winnings" and gamble with that, using the original gambling funds on a wild night or a nicer dinner.

Heh, there was a time I used to pluck the gray hairs from my chin - but that battle of vanity was quickly lost.
I've never wanted the gray out (it started coming in, slowly, in my early 20s) but if I don't pay attention Lani will (would) trim it out.
I like gray and wish my regular hair would speed it up (first gray hairs when I was 18 but it seems to be adding only a couple dozen per year).

I've said before... moving to a totally different area is a great way to "hit the reset button" on your life. Getting you completely out of your comfort zone, your routine, and your regular habits gives you a perfect chance to remake your life in your desired image - because you have no pattern to fall back into, you don't.

If that's your bag, I guess so.
But this is from personal experience, not a business motive. I up and moved to Texas once because I was in a personal rut where I wasn't getting anywhere (career, education, etc), so I uprooted myself and started to move forward again. And I've had friends do the same thing, moving is the easiest way to allow yourself to effect change in your life.

I'm not sure I completely agree with the moving/starting over philosophy. Sometimes it can just result in making the same mistakes in a new local.

07-07-2007, 10:19 PM
I guess it depends on what you're trying to change. And your determination to break your old patterns. You have the opportunity to create new patterns, but you're not prevented from recreating your old ones if you put no effort into changing. New locales just facilitate change... if you're determined to repeat your mistakes then it's not going to help.

I'm trying to move to a completely new area, but it will be a year or more until it happens - *IF* it happens. But the more I think about the possibility of it, the less satisfied I am with the status quo here.

Spend that time deciding what you want from your change (eg: what you want different in your life). Write down your goals using positive language (eg: "I want to ___" instead of "I want to not ____"). Writing goals down commits you to them mentally.
I haven't done that a lot in my life, but the goals I've written down usually came to pass: I went on foreign exchange to England, I've worked for Disneyland, I graduated USC. The hardest part about making your life the way you want it is when you don't know what you want. You can't aim at a vague idea, so pick something specific, and even if you miss the mark a bit, you'll be a lot closer than if you never had a mark at all.
I think it depends on why you're unhappy with things, and that is the hardest thing for many people to figure out. If you don't know what it is, you don't know if you're just taking it with you.

Well stated. For me it had to do with complacency. I was too happy in my nothing job at Disney to move forward as an adult, and I was going broke VERY quickly. So by leaving my comfort zone, I got my career AND education back on track, and was eventually able to return to SoCal and finish my degree back at USC like I wanted to.

It would be difficult for me to join in the mooning at this distance.
Much of my current dissatisfaction has to do with being someone that is just too familiar, too safe. There's no motivation to break free - and in many ways having the rest of my family so close is confining. I want to be somewhere new where I can be me free of the baggage that comes with how others who've known me for so long see me.

Hmm, my desire for change has to do with a lot, but in large part has to do with "Senioritis." I'm so close, yet so far away. I'm worried that when I move, I won't get quite the job I want. (I should try and remember that I'm not sure of the job I want, and chances are, I'll at least get a good job that I can leave once I find an even better job - nothing is permanent.)

What exactly is "unschooling?"

Thanks everyone!
KB, unschooling is a method of homeschooling also known as "whole life learning" or "child led learning." Basically it means that we trust that by nature humans are learners. Nothing needs to be done to make kids learn, it's just what they do. So you expose them to tons of stuff and you help them follow their passions. It's a term coined by John Holt. Sometimes kids want to learn something in a formal manner and will request a curriculum. That totally fits in with the unschoolng philosophy, but otherwise curriculums aren't used.
Dayna Martin's website (http://www.unschoolingamerica.vpweb.com/) has a good summary. And a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4GyDc8SInw) as well.
We recently went to the NW Unschooling Conference and I was beyond amazed at all the kids there. The older kids treated the little kids like people, talking with them and helping them, and the teens treated the adults like people. They could definitely hold their own in a conversation with anyone of any age. Their interests were so diverse as well. Musicians, writers, fencers. It was really really cool.

Congratulations. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Uncritically, of course.
About 20 years ago, I did a book review of "The Day I Became an Autodidact," which I imagine you've read. At the time, I thought Kendall Hailey had, as I've said in other contexts, that kind of Maya-Angelou-serenity you want to whack in the face with a big cartoon skillet. Now, of course, that we have kids in the maelstrom, my wife and I do talk about such things from time to time, so let us know when it comes out.

I think it is so great that there are options. We discussed them when our daughter was about to enter kindergarten but we were not well informed and thought that it was something we could not do. {we had a 'school' in our garage and would have 'lessons' with her, as well as the other kids prior to entering school}.
When the public school system disappointed me, I turned to homeschooling. I loved it. I didn't 'unschool' but, really, it was as close to it as I could while still meeting the requirements.
I only did it for two years {one per son} but I loved it. A friend of mine homeschooled and she was given everything~computer, internet, supplies {art, science, etc.} but she was required to check in daily via the internet. That sucks. :p I liked that I had more control.
I would recommend homeschooling/unschooling to anyone. Anyone who will give the proper time to it, that is. I know someone right now whose son would benefit from the one on one attention but she just refuses to even try it.

We've been home schooling for over four years now, and I am confident that it was the best decision we could have made for our girl. It's really not that hard, but it is time-consuming for the parents and you really have to be creative with regards to socialization opportunities. (Particularly as they get older). Next year we are joining a neighboring school district's home school program, as Tori's best friend goes there and they can be in the same 'class' together. If it works out, great, and if not it will be back to doing it completely on our own again.

I do wish our neighborhood had a local homeschool, the closest one is actually not in this city/county.
I did put them in a different school, smaller classrooms, magnet school. I get a lot of grief from some people but my family is happy and the kid is still doing great, still loves school, that is all that matters.

Erin did well in elementary school, but by Jr. High she was not thriving in a traditional classroom setting. In a word, she was miserable.
When she got to ninth grade, she got into Portland Public Schools' alternative magnet school, the Metropolitan Learning Center (http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools-c/profiles/?id=154). It's an experimental K-12 school centered on expeditionary learning, self-guided curriculum and outside-the-box thinking. She loved it, and learned at least as much about life and herself as about academics.
She never got a grade. Instead, she has a portfolio.

That magnate school reminds me of what I saw on Food Network last night - something about a public HS in NYC that was "Food and Finance." I would have loooooved to go there.
On that note, I've seriously considered homeschooling, at least in the event that the schools aren't good wherever I'm living. I think I was fortunate in that a majority of my teachers, elementary through high school, were rather good. (As I got older, I remember hearing how well Michigan treated their teachers, as opposed to other places they'd lived.)
If nothing else, as with my sisters, I'll always try to take what they're learning outside of the classroom. Because then it's an opportunity for mom to do the nerdy stuff she likes. :)

Lol, totally. I know several people who don't feel they are able to home/unschool, but they incorporate the principles into their lives anyways. Like fostering passions instead of motivating to get good grades, going out of their way to expose their kids to interesting things (because school takes up so much time and it is mostly boring), and really helping their kids follow their interests.
Ozron, that school sounds fantastic. It reminds me of the Sudbury Valley School, which is essentially unschooling in a school.
MW - I agree, what matters is that the kids are happy.
WB - I totally agree about the socialization thing. Here everyone is so spread out that people plan their playdates a few weeks in advance. Our calendar is so full. We have a homeschool preschool group that we go to every week and a few people close by, but in the summertime keeping Indi in touch with his friends is a monumental effort. I long for a smaller, progressive community where socializing flows more freely.
