But the acts in Hostel II (and similar movies) is faked.... IMO, one of the definitions of porn is that what is depicted is real.

JWBear

Alex
11-08-2007, 03:53 PM
The faked acts of Hostel II are much more extreme than the real act of Bondage Babes 23. I can understand that eroticism and titillation of restraint and non-permanent pain. I don't see the potential eroticism and titillation (or worse, simple entertainment) of watching a woman masturbate in a tub full of the blood draining from her naked evisceration victim hanging from the ceiling.

Yes, movies like Hostel II aren't literal porn, but I'm not the one who crated the phrase to describe the genre.

LSPoorEeyorick
11-08-2007, 04:02 PM
Yeah, I suspected that was the scene you were talking about, Alex. We did the site for the movie, and, oy vey, that scene...

JWBear
11-08-2007, 04:07 PM
I wasn't referring to fluff like Bondage Babes 23. I'm talking about the real hard core stuff you find in some real BDSM porn - especially in gay BDSM. Stuff that would make most fans of the mainstream "torture porn" run screaming.

The scene you described above is not just fake, but so outrageous and over the top that, while unpleasant to watch, it just reinforces its fakeness.

I could describe things I've seen that would make every male here cross their legs and squirm. And it's some thing done for real - live - and on film (on a willing subject). And with real blood, real screams. That, my friend, is real torture porn.

Alex
11-08-2007, 04:21 PM
I doubt it, I've seen it all too. I've seen a penis get trifurcated without use of anaesthetic and plenty of very extreme bondage and mutilation stuff. Yes, that is real porn. And the faked acts in movies are more extreme than them in what they present, regardless of whether that very extremeness just highlights that they are staged. I'm not sure what it is we appear to be arguing about.

But as I said I'm not the one who began the use of "torture porn" in reference Hostel II style horror movies. If you feel that real torture porn is somehow being devalued or insulted I'll stop using it.

And my original question remains, are the movies involved in this film festival simple blood and guts horror films in the vein of Hostel II or do they show some inclination towards a more classic literary style of horror?

Morrigoon
11-08-2007, 04:31 PM
I don't think there's anything wrong with your term, Alex. Just like films like Elizabeth are referred to as textile porn because the richness of the costuming is one of the main draws, I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to refer to blood-and-guts horrof flicks as torture porn.

I just think it's silly to use the term (regardless of its origins) when what it's used to describe is neither torture nor porn... And that which can legitimatly be described using the term does exist. But, whatever. YMMV.

Except that there really is some thing called torture porn. As far as I know, there are no categories of sexually explicit films aimed specifically towards people with sexual fetishes for fabric or rollercoasters.

I wouldn't call slasher films "torture porn" any more than I would call Armageddon an astronomy documentary. :)

I can see your point. However, it is a linguistic battle already lost. I just searched "torture porn" at Google and all 100 of the first 100 results are references to horror movies and none genuine torture porn. Even combining "torture porn" with BDSM finds a fair number that are still talking about horror movies when they use the phrase.

That's the drawback of being an extremely niche mostly underground marketplace. The mainstream isn't going to take any notice of linguistic priority when it comes time to hand out the new labels.

And I don't know about rollercoasters but there is porn out there where specific fabrics plays a key role. Particularly silk and velvet.

guess you either hate her or love her - We saw Ten Chi performed tonight at UCLA, part of the Dance series this year and one of my must see choreographers - I'm obviously in the second camp. I was surprised that so many people left during intermission, more surprised when people left in the middle of the second act. But those that stayed leapt to their feet and gave an ovation that even the house lights couldn't kill.

http://photos.xenarchy.com/albums/userpics/10001/ten%20chi%20-%20foto_Jochen_Viehoff.jpg

I don't know that I can adequately describe the performance, a dance collage of impressions of Japanese culture through European glasses. It was funny, joyful, erotic, and just mesmerizing. A snow of confetti began at the end of the first act and continued through intermission and heck even through the curtain call. The ever present falling of - snow? paper cranes? cherry blossoms? it was perfect for the piece and made the dancers repeated moves through the drifts all the more enjoyable to watch. I love that Pina Bausch uses dancers of so many differing types, ages, sizes, and lets each play out their personalities and characters. Her work is half dance half performance art which is probably why I love it so much. She plays through the weekend, I'd recommend seeing this, except, you might just hate her. But for me, I can't wait to see more.

Thank you all for the good vibes.

Monday could be the day. I have an interview Monday morning, via a temp service. They are looking for someone to start immediatly. I have a good friend who already works there, and she loves it.

If that doesn't work out I have another interview, via a different temp service Monday afternoon.

I also just checked my email and found a promising note for a local hospital that is looking for an Administrative Assistant. I had applied there yesterday and they are interested enough to let me know I am a possible candidate.

oh, and The Old People brought over their bikes, so now Nickolas and I have mathcing mountain bikes. I hadn't been on a bike in more than 20 years. It felt great to be mobile again. I think he and I will be taking a trip around the block here in a few minutes.

Haha... I am thoroughly amused. I was responding to a blog post about the proper use of the word "blog" and whether or not a "post" to a blog could likewise be called "blog". In doing so, I made a reference to the looser rules of internet gramma (since blog is a word spawned from that school of writing), and needed to refer to "leet", which a lot of the readers (real estate professionals all) would know nothing about. So I pulled up the wiki entry on it.

It's a riveting read!

Is anyone familiar with D. J. Waldie? He wrote this beautiful book called Holy Land and he occasionally writes pieces for the L.A.Times. I met him at the Festival of Books a few years ago. He has a new book out which is a collaboration with Diane Keaton about So Cal Spanish Revival architecture. And this morning I heard him on a radio segment about local street names. The piece was about a street in Lakewood and since he's information officer (something like that) for the city of Lakewood it was natural for him to take part.

So I'm driving through Lakewood this morning to my usual coffee place and because of the radio piece I'm thinking about Lakewood street names and D. J. Waldie. I'm just fascinated that this real author person is local and not in some ivory tower somewhere (I recognized him coming out of Best Buy once) so I'm wondering if he ever goes to my coffee place and I'm imagining what I might say to him. And I glance over to this man walking along the street and...it's D. J. Waldie.

What a ridiculous coincidence.

MG- bike riding is fun! Enjoy your "new" bikes!

I got 14 miles in this morning which was nice. Mountain bike trails. I was feeling it, since I have been away from my bike for two whole weeks.

Work tonight was an oldies show. The lead singer had jackets for his Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and his Little Richard characters. The other singer had a Roy Orbison getup and something else I can't remember. My fellow spotlight op commented on the bad wig; "it's Roy Orbison not Liza Minnelli". It was funny. The first guy came out a second time as Elvis in a tight black jumpsuit but at least this time he ditched the wig (it was bad).

So now I'm home and my Guinness is foaming in its glass nicely. Hubby wants me to get to bed but I'm *so* not tired.

My cousin has been emailing me since I got her address at her wedding. She likes the names-calligraphy piece I did for them and she likes the pictures I took at her wedding. Happy happy! She's a cousin, and I haven't had a lot of contact with her over the last... I don't know how many years. My mom's had dinner with her a few times, so it's not like my family is totally disconnected. Just mostly.

It is flippin' cold this morning. I had to get out the space heater for the bathroom so that I can take a shower.

I had a good weekend. I was able to catch up on a lot of sleep. Today I have 2 prospective jobs to visit. The one I want is this morning at 9:30. Depending on how the interview goes, I could start as early as today, which would be great. Neither place pays as much as I would like, but at least it would be something more than I am making at this moment (which is nothing). Both are close to the house, which is nice. I like only having to drive 5-10 minutes to get to work. The one this morning means reuniting with a former co-worker and good friend.

Board games are awesome. So is cards!

Whenever anyone on my mom's side of the family gets together card games are a must-play (There has to be something else to do other than drink beer...We sure go through a lot of it!) at the reunions! There's a game called Tripoly that we always play. It's very fun! I guess you could call it a board game as well cause there is a board (usually in the form of a mat) used to play the game. If we're not playing that it is poker, rummy, or cribbage (Grandpa's favorite game may he continue to rest in peace).

What gives? It means you pass a lot of trucks.

To be honest, and this isn't exactly "like me" - but I'm in the mood to have the holidays start early this year. It's been a strange few months and I'm ready to at least fake myself out into thinking about "holiday spirit." I'm ready for shiny little lights and obnoxiously early music. I'm making the gingerbread lattes and grateful for each waft of sweetness that passes my nose. I'm ready to smell turkeys and hams, mashed potatoes and at least three kinds of pie. Gimme stuffing! Gimme cranberries! Give me anything, damn it! Anything but more school work and the same-old same-old. Just this once.

It's really not because we want it to be Christmas. We have plans the next 2 weekends and by then it'll likely be too snowy and icy outside to put them up. They are also the obnoxious kind that play music and each zone blinks independently with the music ;)

But I really don't want them on until after Thanksgiving, we just had them on last night to make sure they worked. They're off now, I promise.

Oh man! Even I was looking at the canned cranberries and thinking 'Oh, we should have those out, even if no one eats them....'

Which is funny because I've been thinking of having an 'anti-Christmas'. I'm tired of it being about gifts, we don't need anything {except to pay bills}. I have been thinking instead of encouraging the spirit of Christmas, rather than the spirit of giving gifts.

I want to spend time with family and friends. Making cookies, doing crafts, sharing time with people. We've been so busy, having said too many times 'Oh I wish we had time to spend with so and so, we haven't seen so and so in ages...etc.'

I have been thinking that we shall try and watch a movie every night, those who want to watch can {last year everyone was eager to watch together} and those who don't, no pressure.

I need to find my X-mas cd {complete with a snowy picture of Yosemite etched on to it}.

I think I need to do my best to bring the family together as everyone is so busy.

I LOVE lights. I even set them up inside of my house.

To be honest, and this isn't exactly "like me" - but I'm in the mood to have the holidays start early this year. Here is something for you to look forward to: you get to experience a white Christmas this year!

They're off now, I promise.I have no problem with them going up early. Turning them ON before Thanksgiving is what will cause problems. But your intent is to not, so you are okay.

And since you are officially resolved to not light before Thanksgiving (after all, it is the intent that matters), please go ahead and turn them on once just to issue a pox upon GC. He deserves it.

Normally I wait until after Boy's b-day (the 6th) to start Christmas decorations. Since this is going to be such an odd year I may let him get the stuff down Thanksgiving weekend. It may help his mood a bit. He is still angry with me about spending TG with his dad, this may be the ticket to get him out of the funk.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with him for his b-day. I am thinking, since he is mine the weekend after, a day trip on that Saturday to DLR, staying later than we normally do to see the lights, might be just the ticket. That Sunday it looks like we are heading to Tehachapi in the late afternoon to celebrate with my sister and then go see her girls' recital in Bear Valley. Now I just need to figure out when to do his b-day with The Old People...

*sigh*

I did have a nice conversation with D tonight. I wanted to make sure that Boy came to me TG night, not spend the night over there. Boy was worried enough that his counselor talked to me about it. I also had a few things I needed to clear up. The conversation went well, but I made sure I called him before he got home from work, so that HER influence wouldn't be so prevalent.

I will probably be watching football, making phone calls, and IMing people. I'm not a big New Year's Eve person. Why? Fireworks and me are not friends. Loud noises that come out of nowhere that I can't see make me quite uncomfortable. Then I will set my alarm for 3 AM Eastern so that I can wish you guys a Happy New Year...and then I will go back to bed.

We usually don't put up Christmas decorations until the 15th of December. That's my Mom's Birthday. So around that time is when we go and buy a tree. As for me however I have my own little tree that I will put up around the first of the month. I am beginning to come up with a small collection of Christmas decoarations, ornaments, plushes. In fact I think I have a bigger tree this year I can actually hang my Disney ornaments on. We'll see. My Disney collection is really special because it was bought for me by a really good friend of mine that lost her battle with adrenal gland cancer last year. I cried when I opened the box last year. I'll probably do so again this year. I miss her bunches. She was such a nice person.
