You know, and I know this is petty and stupid, but sometimes I just want to buy things for myself, so that I can get exactly not what I want and not have someone else possibly waste money on stuff that's not wanted. Usually, I just grin and bear it, but today, I wanted to go out and get the rest of what I wanted for a salsa recipe. I asked my grandma not to go get it (she wants to go to some cheap-assed grocery store that's about 10+ minutes away so she can save what will probably amount to $1), but she left anyway.

GAH!

That, and I wanted to get out of the house to do more than go to the post office. You know, like... the grocery store is fun and stuff. :(

I think I'm just in a mood. Someone help me.

I ran out of gas today. While waiting in line at the gas station. It was hot. I was there waiting... and waiting... and COME ON NOW HURRY UP! Finally the guy in front of me moved and sputter sputter. Out of gas. Luckily a few guys ran over and helped push the van the few feet up to the tank. Well - now I know just how low it will go don't I.

Can I ask a sensitive question? I think I can. We can all talk openly right? If I hurt anyone's feelings by asking, I'm truly sorry. Having said that - here goes. At what point does the health care of your pet become too expensive to pay for? That is - that you decide to let nature take it's course or put your beloved pet down due to a lack of money?

I don't have pets due to my husbands allergies and never really did growing up. But always loved cats and made friends with many in our neighborhood growing up or at relatives houses. I can see the attachment. It's a member of the family.

But it's not like health care for humans where - if you're seriously ill and in the emergency room - they'll give you medical care and ask you for payment after the fact. And as you were saying - they want a good chunk of the money upfront. Although I guess you could make payments and all that. And I've heard of animal health insurance -

so barring that from the equation - at what price is it too much money?

Alex
07-20-2007, 05:50 PM
I think it is a fair question and easily discussed in the abstract, but previous experience on other boards suggests that it is a discussion that generally doesn't go well in the midst of someone actually dealing with the question.

Short answer: it varies quite a bit from person to person and possibly even from pet to pet with the same person.

Morrigoon
07-20-2007, 06:01 PM
I'll let you know when it happens. No idea.

I don't know that there's an absolute point... I think it's a balance of likelihood of success, quality of life afterward, and cost of care.

For Barnum, who has a strong likelihood of recovery, even if he won't be quite 100%, it's totally worth it.

It's never been about price for me but about quality of life for my pet. "Owning" a pet requires a certain amount of responsibility to care for that pet. You need to realize that from the get go (not all people do). There are many surgeries or medications that allow a pet to live a healthy and quality life. If these can be applied, then my opinion is to do them. If a situation is not fixable, then you get to a point where you have to make a decision. i am always grateful that difficult decision CAN be made for a pet. We certainly don't have that luxury with our human loved ones.

For me it's quality of life. If medication or surgery will fix it then it should be done. My kitty Tiger had cancer. They removed the tumor and he had another few years of a great quality of life. The tumor grew back and when the vet said he was in pain we chose to send him to kitty heaven. When Springer was sick and the vet said that he had a very slim chance to be healthy and pain free we took him home (after saying our goodbyes and a $5,000 bill) to see what would happen. He's better than ever.

Pet insurance only covers a few things. When Gus ate chocolate, his vet bill qualified for coverage by his insurance and, eventually, reimbursed after a tons of running around and lots of paperwork.

None of my cats have insurance. I doubt they would cover Charles. Also, they usually require cats to get vaccinations annually and I (and my vet) that that is too much and can actually be damaging.

It's a concept that really hasn't caught on yet.

At what point does the health care of your pet become too expensive to pay for?

We've talked about that. Our decision was easier, because my boy didn't really qualify for back surgery. He has a steroid that I give him sometimes, thyroid pills, and pain pills. He also has a wheelchair. He's been to the vet quite a bit this week; he spent all Wednesday there for a swelling on his face, likely a foxtail lodged somewhere causing trouble.

My tolerance for vet bills is apparently quite high; whatever will help him, I've been willing to do.

I don't know that there's an absolute point... I think it's a balance of likelihood of success, quality of life afterward, and cost of care.

For Barnum, who has a strong likelihood of recovery, even if he won't be quite 100%, it's totally worth it.

I'm glad Barnum has a good chance of recovery; having a gimp dog is not exactly a picnic. It's a risk, when having a long-backed pet, but still, if he could be fixed, it's good. Ottis can't be fixed.

Hopefully the vet can help him and at least give you some time to make your decisions and do some research.

I hope the little guy feelsl better soon.

Thank you for the good news of paying off a credit card and the good car news of being covered by a surprise warranty. I think we could all use the good news this week. I know I need it.

I drove back from Palm Springs yesterday and back to real life. Sigh. I made sure that I had internet access while I was there and then ended up using the laptop as a big paperweight. All I really needed was some shade, a bunch of yarn, and some books.

I had a lovely dinner at my absolute favorite restaurant, Zin American Bistro (http://www.zinamericanbistro.com). I had salmon and mashed potatoes and asparagus and some wonderful sauce that made me want to lick the plate clean but I settled for ordering dessert instead.

Matchbox is another good restaurant (vintage pizza bistro, whatever that means) but this time the service was incredibly slow and it felt like days before my pizza arrived. But the food is good and the leftover thin-crust sausage and onion pizza was great reheated the next day for lunch.

Now if someone can just explain why I have to go back to work on Monday...

I can't wait for the day I get to not work from my home.

It seems that no matter when it is that I decide to start working, or studying, or whatever requires focus, phone conversations commence outside the computer room door, jackhammers start up for the neighbor's pool repair project, BBQs and family reunions commence and just then when things get quiet, the neighbor behind us lights up his doobie, the scent of which wafts up to my window.

Not that any of it is particularly bad (with the exception of the jackhammer, I can't wait until they're finished!), it's just distracting. It's why I have my headphones on, cranked up. Right now, I'm listening to Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

He was/is very happy to be home. Man, do I ever feel empty when he isn't around. For the first weekend I think it went ok. He called me 3 times Friday night, only once on Saturday night (to tell me good night). We had some serious snuggle time when he finally woke up.

Part of me just wanted to pump him for information, while the mother in me knew that was the wrong thing to do. He did say that he doesn't really like it over there, that the kids are treated better than he is (he is 10, everything is unfair).

I've learned that my dad has taken it upon himself to record as many family stories in book form as he can. No doubt spurred by his brush with death last year.

Fortunately, he has an invaluable resource to assist him, his 102 year old aunt. Other than being frustrated at her mounting physical limitations, she's still doing great. Sharp as a tack at 102. She's the youngest, and last surviving, of 5 sisters. The others made it into their 90s, save for my grandmother, the smoker, who died of emphyzema, I believe in her 80s. So my dad spent hours visiting her in Seattle this weekend (on the way to and from a trip through the Canadian rockies) and got some details on some 100 year old stories.

I can't wait to read them.

Did you see that episode of Hunter where McCall was in serious danger and Hunter had to come rescue her? That was a great episode.

Wait, wait, WAIT a second! McCall in danger?!?!? I think I might have possibly seen that one. Was she also undercover as a hooker, too? Have you seen that episode?

:D

I forgot about Enid being paralyzed! Which book was that?? I know somewhere inside my Mom's garage, packed away and gathering dust, is my Sweet Valley High series. Unless my stepdad trashed them to make room for his Porsche, which I'm sure he did. Hopefully my Barbies are entertained by them while they both reside in that same landfill. :( Not that I can blame him. I also took over my Grandma's garage and I have a storage unit. I come with a lot of baggage- literally. If I had them, I would so send them MouseWife's way. :)

Didn't Elizabeth make-out with Bruce Patman after Todd's motorcycle accident after the coma when she thought she was Jessica?? Those twins were the grooviest. So much so that I actually watched the TV show, Saturday mornings while working at the Tanning Salon, even though I was in my early 20's and maybe a tad too old. :D

Didn't they have a Sweet Valley TV show, or series, or movie? I vaguely remember, but wasn't super into the genre. I did read a book here and there and someone once gave me a Sweet Valley board game, which got me to read a few, just so I could figure out who the characters in the game were. I think I always liked Enid, but thought it was a strange name at the time.

In previous classes, my teacher has talked about how she's trying to be more healthy, etc. Then in the process of talking about brand loyalty today, she mentioned that she will only drink Coca-Cola, followed up with, "When I wake up in the morning, I put two in the freezer to drink before I go to the gym. Then, when I come back, I put two more in while I take a shower and drink them before I start off with my day."

No offense to anyone here, but she's not light. She's talked about a desire to be healthier. And yet... isn't addressing the problem with slamming down 4 in the morning, every morning - not to mention any others she might drink throughout the day.

At least cutting back could help.

Plus, what all that cola does to teeth. Yikes! I've seen it!

She'd be cutting - what - 800 calories out of her day without the Coca-cola? At the end of the week, thats 5,600 calories... She'd be a lot healthier.

Since summer began, I can't drink hot coffee in the morning, so I found myself grabbing Diet Coke (the brand new one in the blue can with vitamins & minerals, even though I'm sure they just grind up one Flintstones chewable and mix it in to the entire vat. :p ) then, I began grabbing Coke when Diet Coke wasn't available. This lasted for about 3 weeks until I was so disgusted with myself for knocking back too much soda pop. I just felt guilty and gross. :( I know lots of people who drink scads and they look and feel great! More so then I could ever hope to! Soda just isn't my personal bag.

So, I switched back to ice tea and ice water. I love apple juice, too.

Coke at the movies or with a Bob's Big Boy combo? Mmm..nothin' better! But waking up and practically gargling with it is kinda grody. :(

I used to drink a lot of regular Coke (and like Erica’s teacher, it was only Coca Cola). I tried quitting for a long time. I can’t stand aspartame (makes everything taste like aspirin), so Diet Coke wasn’t an option. I tried going cold turkey, and just drink lots of water; but it never satisfied me. I craved Coke horribly. Then I started drinking flavored Arrowhead sparkling water. That did the trick! I discovered that it was the carbonation I craved! I drink 2-3 big bottles of it every day. Now, when I’m at work, I’ll buy a can of Coke from the vending machine in the morning and only take a couple of sips. The rest stays on my desk, untouched, for the rest of the day. I’ll also sometimes order a Coke to drink when out at a restaurant. That’s it, I never drink Coke at home.

Just to validate you, and truly put this into perspective, being a largish person, with a fancy for cherry coke...

Regular Coca-cola is 97 calories per 8 oz
A can is 12 oz.
(for cherry the way it works is 104 for 8oz, and a can is 150 calories.)

So lets assume that regular is 140 a can...
Thats 582 calories in that four cans.

your 800 calories a day is actually low.

I think what bothered me the most was this self-professed desire to get healthy, and all this talk of working out, eating right, vitamins, and what's good for you when you get older, yada yada that she has been talking about this last week and a half. She talks about it every day. Then blam-O... four unrepentant Cokes to start the day with. I can see one... maybe two... but four!

I'm no innocent, but I don't go around telling people how interested I am in my health and being healthy while doing something as silly as pounding four Cokes - which I've found out are 155 calories. She'd (theoretically) lose close to a pound a week by just cutting out three of those cans.

Thinking about this has made me re-aware of my own dietary habits. I need to get back to thinking about portion control again. Being so stressed with school, work and finances, married with the fact that for my schoolwork and actual work I'm sitting so much more than I used to, hasn't done my figure well. Lucky for me I'm a fan of the gym...

Alex - she specifically said she can't stand Diet Coke.

Morri - Drinking that much Coke (or pretty much that much of anything so sugary) is almost always evident in the mouth after years of doing it, to which she professed. She mentions going to a doctor and her doctor is the one getting her to change a number of other things... so I'll assume the Coke thing was addressed there. Even if it wasn't, a lot of people are reluctant to even heed the advice of a doctor - I doubt I'd have any affect without becoming somewhat offensive.

Brings me back to our earlier conversation about people not wanting to hear advice.

Lindsay Lohan Arrested Again

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Five days after being booked in connection with a May drunk driving charge, actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested early Tuesday morning on five charges -- including drunk driving and possession of a controlled substance, Santa Monica police told CNN.

The whole story (http://edition.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/24/lohan.arrest/)

Now I am hearing that she was "chasing" the mother of her personal assistant who had just quite a few hours earlier (the personal assistant quit - not the mother). The "controlled substance" is allegedly cocaine.

I thought she was wearing the monitor voluntarily so I'd guess she could take it off if she wanted to. Her publicist said she was wearing it so the press could "see" she wasn't drinking when she went out with her pals.

We discussed this a bit in the Addiction thread. The disease of alcoholism/addiction is a double edged sword. You THINK you can do it on willpower alone, but thinking you can stay sober on willpower is one of the most cunning aspects of the disease. That's why admitting you are powerless over alcohol or drugs is one of the most important aspects of recovery. Lohan won't admit that she is powerless. But, she obviously is. She keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

As for non-fried Fair choices, I'd highly recommend the pork butt sandwich found on the north walkway near that Ralph's-sponsored family zone or whatever it's called. Yummmmmm.

I'll pass that on - not a big pork sandwich person. I'm really looking forward to the roasted corn. And sno cones.

And see, I don't think she's powerless at all. If believing in the power outside yourself is the trick that does it, it's still YOUR doing - i.e., your power that did the requisite belief system.

There may be other tricks or methods ... but they are still all your doing as the addict or alcoholic. Until that magic drug comes along to directly affect the dopamine system and the cognitive malady, the doing is all yours. Even when the pill comes along, it's up to your personal willpower to take the pill.

Oh, were we talking about Lohan? If she's got a soul, she can help herself. And if it's God that's going to help her, there's no artificial "invitation" needed.

And just so everyone knows - I started that thread because a few people were getting irritated that the books were being discussed in the movie thread. And that things that are not spoilers but may have referenced book 6 were being posted. New thread is to discuss anything without fear of tainting someone who has managed to avoid all major spoilers of 2 year old books.

How's that for a thread title?

wendybeth
07-24-2007, 10:21 PM
The thread was started as a response to a few complaints in the OoTP film thread about others discussing what happened in the HBP. Some people are not reading the books and want to keep in the dark about what happens next, but others want to discuss certain aspects that necessitate such discussions. It's the ultimate HP free-for -all, so anyone who goes in does so knowing that it's spoilerific.

Soooo, I went to the ATM today to deposit a check for the first time in a long time. There’s a new way of doing it that’s pretty cool, and I don’t know how long it’s been around (but it seems brand new to me).

You simply shove a check in a slot, and the ATM scans it ... then tells you how much the check is for ... and gives you a receipt with an image of the check printed on it.

That’s pretty slick.

If I deposited checks, that is.

That’s pretty slick.Yeah - I found a BofA machine near DL (on Katella just West of State College) that does that - I was tripping over that. It got the amount correct on two out of three checks (there were two hand-written checks and the handwriting on one was just outside the OCR's capability).

Since I have to deposit a check EVERY WEEK, I wish the machines that I regularly use were like that. I've even thought about stopping by the Katella one on the way to use that ATM, but it is just a wee bit to far out of my way.

And that looks surprisingly like you - well at least how you looked the last time I saw you.

I think it will again. this is too weird

It is spreading quickly through the industry but it is about 5-6 years old now (I beta tested some of the first ones Wells had back then). But don't think it is primarily about customer ease. The big selling point is that it drastically cuts down on certain types of fraud.

Not really, the checks were always processed with an automated system (98% or so of all checks are processed without ever being seen by human eyes), the information on the deposit slip was only of limited significance.

It is, of course, an issue but just not a very big one. Empty envelope fraud and Check 21 are the primary drivers.

Empty envelope fraud - People would take advantage of the cash back feature of ATM deposits by depositing empty envelopes taking back the $100 and doing this for the 1-3 days before it is caught and the account closed (fraudulently opened accounts, of course). One successful instance of this ($100) is the same cost as about 1,300 data entry errors that fail out to the manual process (about $0.075 each).

Check 21 - Allows check images to be processed as if they were the source paper. If the ATM images the check it can be put into the processing pipeline immediately cutting down by a couple days the processing time to almost immediate (floating checks hoping to deposit before it clears is an increasingly bad idea). This saves banks a lot of money because such ATMs need only be maintained for money and mechanical issues rather than daily to retrieve deposits for processing. The expense here (hiring the armored trucks to do it is very expensive) again far outweighs the costs of user error.

I had a horrendously busy day at work today; 4 scheduled meetings and 2 unscheduled meetings. I got absolutely no regular work done (and of course, it kept piling up all day).

On top of it all, I slipped and fell on the linoleum floor in the Lunchroom. There was a puddle of water I didn't see. My manager and I had to fill out a heap of paperwork (even though I wasn't injured, we still had to do all the workers comp stuff).

You would think, in this day of advanced computing technology, that a phone company as big and well-capitalized as AT&T could forward a ****ing business phone line without taking 5 days to do it.

I believe I actually heard the word "typist" mentioned in the explanation of why it would take so long.

A story to make you feel better:

This past weekend my brother fell out of a hotel van while on a business trip in Knoxville. Got tangled in the seatbelts or somesuch. Hit his head, shoulder, and hip on the way down, and nearly broke his finger. Got to visit the Knoxville ER and now has to see a hand specialist due to potential ligament damage in his ring finger.

Not only does he have paperwork to fill out, but all his coworkers heard about it before he got back, and he's received quite the razzing.

No problem, I've been messing in this area recently. I have a new product idea that has a lot of heat behind it (yay me) but has been running into a big wall because of some idiosyncrasies with how checks are processed. Over the last three weeks I've learned way more than I would ever want to know.

I get to have lunch with the general manager tomorrow :DIs this considered an honor or congratulatory effort of some sort?

Is it you and 400 other employees enjoying an "intimate" meeting with the boss or is it just a couple of youse?

Well if it means anything...I didn't think it was intentional. I don't know where you are all in reading the book.

I'm up to the bit where Voldemort gets GWB to set off the Nukelar war and every character dies.

Exactly. I love crab...real crab.

We went to Joe's Crab Shack in SFO and I had me a big ole messy Dungemess (typo intentional) Crab with butter on our last day there.

MMMMMMM mm. I still have the Crab Cracker (they let you keep it)
