Phew,

I'm glad this week is over.

I was pulled in a 100 different directions this week between volunteering in 2 of my girls' classes, organizing class gifts for 2 of them, getting glasses for my oldest one, and we celebrated my middle girl's VIP week in her class. I also managed to pull off our part of a Girl Scout event last night after my Co-Leader and parent helper came down with viral and strep infections even though I've had a lovely cold since Thanksgiving.

So far today, we've scored Garth tickets and had the girls' Christmas portraits and Christmas cards all done.

I'm tired, but now I have nothing else to do than to enjoy my Trojans whooping up on those cross town guys.

Fight On!

I slept like crap last night! I was cold all night and saw the sun rise. I finally got to sleep a bit after sun-up and slept until a whopping 9:00. When I woke up, there were 4 cats and a dog in bed and Thurston was snuggling with Charles. That's a first.

The dream - and the building became a sort of craftsman bungalow, but it started out a room in a Persian hotel by the airport. We were driving up the coast. The equipment was soe sort of combination entertainment and surveillance system. We just wanted to listen to some music and the bumper was rather cold.

I forgot to mention, I took Disneyphile to the Cruise Ship dock this morning in San Pedro. We tried to pull into the drop-off area but it was blocked off my a police barricade. I jumped out of the car to see what the issue was (and when it would be resolved) and apparently the docking area was temporarily quarantined. When I asked if it was a bomb threat, I got a pause then a non-committal reaction from an officer. I haven't been able to find anything on the any news sites about what was going on.

Bathroom curtains has been on the list since before I redecorated my bathroom. So, I'm off to Joanne's for a thread run and maybe I'll even buy myself a decent sewing box since I've had mine since I was 9 and the plastic tray is completely cracked). Oh, and did I tell you I got my sewing machine tuned up? AND....I bought an actual case for it so I can get ride of the 35 year old box and it won't collect dust as it sits under the bed for 11 months out of the year.

Who knows, maybe I'll get kitchen curtains done too! NYE may be exciting (for me at least).

I was going to make a joke about "what's film?" But that reminded me of a story from library school (so this would be 1996-8). It was the second semester cataloging class and we were going over MARC fields for alternative media and running through various example when one of the women in the class raised her hand and, in all seriousness, asked "I'm sorry, but what is an LP?" I think about 80% of the class (not to mention the professor) immediately crumbled to dust they felt so old.

True, she was the only one who didn't know (and she was very young for grad school, 20 I think). But right on the edge of what was to come. I knew what an LP was but had never owned one (I was 22) and neither had anybody in my family bought one in living memory (my Dad had an old collection of them but I had never seen one played).

But the point of my reminiscence was that I would avoid the "what's film" joke since premature hints of technological obsolescence makes people feel old.

While I generally agree with BTD, how about this vintage looking gizmo (http://www.electronicsforless.ca/electronics/item/770/Technosonic_Nostalgic_Record_Player_with_CD_Casset te_and_AM-FM)

Yes but it doesn't have dual tapes so you can tape off of your tapes. And now she's decided she needs a cd burner as well. I have tried to explain you can do this with your computer, she has an imac, but she just does not comprehend.

I have an old stereo I could sell her that has dual tapes, and a turntable, with a separate attachable cd player. Of course, better hope she doesn't want to listen to the radio since the LCD display for that broke in the Northridge Earthquake ;)

Actually... I need the turntable to be able to hook up to a computer and digitize my great-grandfather's old records one of these days, so I can't really get rid of it.

(Seriously... glass records, one-sided records... pre-vinyl stuff)

The quality of a USB turn table (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/mp3/90a0/)probably be better than any cabling from turn table to computer.

The Ion USB turntable has gotten pretty bad reviews for audio quality. I have a Griffin iMic (a little analog > digital USB adapter) plus a Griffin Turntable Connection cable (which, in addition to grounding, takes the left and right RCA jacks and converts them to a mini). That way, I can plug any quality turntable into my mac...

Speaking of snubbing...

There's a reception today at the law school for the new federal judge. Great opportunity to network, right? Except that law students are NOT invited to the reception being held IN THE LAW SCHOOL, RIGHT OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY DOORS, and during the last week of classes - when students actually show up to hear what will be on the final exam. But, as you enter the library - don't look at the reception! It's full of very important people and we don't want them to have to encounter actual students.

Perhaps a less prominent location than the library would have been a good choice.

And if you do?

We spontaneously combust - which would save me the trouble of studying for my final exams.

Although, just for a change of pace, I decided not to capitulate without at least a modicum of effort on my part - so, since it's basically just Judges that are invited, I emailed the Judge I know that is friends with the new Judge and already offered to recommend me to new Judge and asked if Judge-I-know was planning to be there and, if so, could I impose on him for an introduction to new Judge. May be too late in the afternoon for him to check his email, and he may say "no", but perhaps fate will reward just a wee bit of persistence.

At least I tried to be proactive. It's not my natural tendency.

Prudence

So much for that theory. The judge I know isn't going, and they actually have their little area downstairs ROPED OFF. They have someone at the "entry" to make sure you're on the "list."

Frankly, I think that's it's a pretty sh!tty thing to do. If you want to hold a private reception, find a private space. Don't hold it in the lobby, right in the middle of everything, and stick up little ropes to keep us riff-raff out. And I question the school's judgment in allowing this little event to take place. I think I'll not be contributing to the alumni fund after all.

They may be keeping the area roped off to prevent the judges from being inundated by a plethora of students trying to do the exact thing you wanted to do. How many students are there? Depending on how many students might be interested in kissing up to talking to judges, the judges will be awful busy talking to students (and not each other, which I presume is the primary reason for the get-together).

No, an outside group has rented the space. However, my point remains that the school would not permit the women's law caucus to have their event be women only, because excluding men didn't send the right message that "social justice" is for everyone. Apparently this is an exception, though.

ETA: In three-and-a-half years I have never seen an event here that roped off an area and wouldn't let students network. The school generally promotes all networking opportunities and has to beg students to attend these events. Having a particularly noisy, disruptive event with only certain people permitted - that is held DURING CLASS HOURS - is very unusual, and I can't remember it ever happening before.

No, they do not need water. DF soaks them about once a week, which is how they get their water (and from the veggies you are feeding them). They are desert dwellers and used to going periods without water.

Received call from Scott on Sunday saying he'd return. Been making moves for the last few weeks. May have to move someone else.

As far as next year, Scott will have to make a decision on retirement immediately after the season ends. Scott only committed to this season, could return next year but there won't be grace period.

Scott will not travel with the team, will have to train and skate, when the team decides he's fit, he'll play. Burke thinks that's 7-10 days.
And we won!

OMG!
We had a wonderful day at the Park. We did whatever He wanted to do. This meant TSI and Redwood Creek CT. We did some late afternnon shopping and ended up heading back to the car to drop off packages and get our jackets. That is when the rain started. No biggy, we were both about done in. We went back to watch the tree being lit and headed towards home.

It was 7 by the time we hit Castaic. It had started to rain and the temp was dropping. I knew we were in trouble when I saw the road sign cautioning of heavy snow over summit. Then I glanced at my car's thermometer (which reads 3 degs warmer than it actually is) and it said 37 and ice. The flurries stared shortly after that.

I have not been that scared and tense in a long time. By the time we got to Gorman it was really think snow, with high winds, so it seemed like it was snowing sideways, straight into my windshield.

I am just very thankful that I grew out of the stupid driving stage. I slowed way down, put on my hazards (I had never used them so it took me a bit to remember where they were) and white knuckled the steering wheel.

We are home, safe and sound. If my adreneline ever slows down I am going to crash big time.

Neighbors suck. :(

Our patio/front porch is currently under construction, so we had to clear everything off two weeks ago and move it to the garage. So, every other day, we've pulled our potted trees out in front of the garage door for some sunshine and fresh air without any issue... until this morning. Ken went to move them back inside, only to find them gone. Apparently, one of our neighbors decided to help themselves to our trees without even asking.

So, we've placed a multi-page banner across our garage door, stating, "Please return our trees." The manager knows nothing, but says he will ask around, and he was rather shocked, because he's lived here for years and there has been no theft from within the complex (the garages are within the gated lot). And, no one threw them in the dumpster either.

It's quite a crappy way to start a week, because as silly as it sounds, we considered them part of the family in a way. I've been growing the avocado tree for the last 5 years after sprouting it from a pit. And, our little lemon tree was just finally starting to fruit, with the first lemon almost ready, and we were totally looking forward to honor it by enjoying a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade. And, I bought the little rosemary bush as a house blessing for our new home. :(

I just checked outside again, and the trees still haven't been returned. :( If they don't show up in the next 24 hours, we're going to walk the complex and see if we can see the avocado's branches poking over someone's balcony. If we find it, they're going to hate having me knock on their door.

His grandfather, who raised him, just passed a few days ago and I know it's been really rough on the whole family. My condolences go out to you right now. Unfortunately, Christmas time will feel like this for a while. :-/

DP!
I'd be so p.o.'d right now! I can't believe anyone would have the nerve to do that. I could see if you put the pots closer to the street, but they were by your garage for crying out loud! ARGH! I'm hoping for their safe return, so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Talk about timing!

I went to the bathroom, and decided to peek out the window at our garage. Lo and behold, there was our neighbor (one garage over) very hastily moving the trees from her garage to the front of ours.

So, I opened the window, and called out, "Thank you so much for returning our trees! No worries!"

Well, where I'm naive to think that people are generally good-natured, and gave her the benefit of the doubt that perhaps she pulled them inside to protect them from this morning's wind... she looked up at the window, saw me, and RAN back inside. (At which point my suspicions kicked in as to why she would bolt if it were truly an honest deed or mistake.)

So, I went outside to find only the avocado and rubber trees, both of which are not fruiting. And, to add to my suspicion of ill intent, the center support pole for the avocado was removed.

She has until Ken gets home to return the lemon tree and rosemary, then we knock on their door. I'll still be friendly... but, if they refuse to return the others or play stupid, or not answer their door at all, I'll be calling the manager to sort it out. ;)

Why my naivety has switched to suspicion:

1) She RAN when I very jovially said, "Thanks!"
2) The avocado's pole was removed.
3) The two most valuable plants have yet to be returned, and upon glancing into their garage, are no where to be found. (Maybe they decided to make them gifts?)
4) They have seen those trees sitting outside at various times for the last two weeks, with Ken watering them.

Ken's response was, "Maybe you startled her, and she doesn't speak English." My rebuttal, "She knows enough English to have read the sign on our garage door."

So, tonight's gonna be interesting...

This sounds like an excellent time for another demonstration of waterboarding. :evil:CIA Tested, Bush Approved! So, it can't be all that bad, right? ;)

It's not even the fact that both plants still missing were about $20 combined. It's the principle of the matter.

And, if they seriously don't respond or refuse, and the manager doesn't get involved, then I'll file a police report with full description of the person I saw. It'd be a sad thing to have a police record over. So, hopefully, they'll be smart enough to return our property.

And, I've now learned to never leave our garage door open for even a minute while unloading groceries. God only knows what she'd help herself to next.

This mess kinda makes me want to make a special holiday fruitcake laced with laxatives and leave it on their doorstep.

Both my dad's parents died in December - conveniently timed so that the funeral would be during the first blizzard of the year. We are nothing if not a thoughtful lot.

It's hard sometimes, because so many of our existing traditions (like specific ornaments or holiday foods) or memories (they used to send a big box o' cow every Christmas, and my grandfather's birthday was Christmas day).

However, as years have gone on, and the pain isn't as sharp, Christmas is a time I always remember them, and what a profound influence they had on my life. Ryan got to meet my grandmother a few months before she died, and I'm so grateful for that.

Heck, whenever I play a Christmas carol on the piano I remember how much my Grandma Edith enjoyed when I used to make her tapes of those carols to send to her, and how much she loved those silly tapes.

Bittersweet, but good memories, and an annual trigger.
