BE~ TMJ?

Yeah, been struggling with it forever. In fact, when I worked at the dental office, I was the test dummy for showing others how to take panoramic x-rays, since my TMJ was so messed up. Left side is nearly flat, with nothing grabbing onto my jaw, and the other is extra knobby, as though all the bone from the one side went right to the other. It's messed up, and short of a replacement on my left side, there's not much I can do with it.

But, I was hoping to not find a dentist out here until I had insurance. If this goes on much longer, I may just have to suck it up and take care of it. Or I may hold out until I go back to Cali.

Well, today is definitely interesting.

I got to work, and found out that I got 105 pts on a "Secret Shopper" score- so a perfect 100 score + 5 bonus; that was a good start.

Then, I went to my work area, which isn't my normal work area, and started up.
The closing person isn't showing up, so I'm gonna be extending, and we have to do some tricky stuff to get my lunch and breaks.

Then, a sales manager came and asked me if I want to come in and be an Inventory Control lead tomorrow.

It's a beautiful day :)

In other news: sometimes my work just seems ridiculous. I had to enter a PO to pay the university's 08 dues for their participation in some giant telescope consortium thingy. Because otherwise the purchasing department was going to search around for the cheapest giant telescope consortium? Seriously?

Lisa failed to mention he also does magic - upon getting home and getting the dreaded cone, he vanished under the bed and managed to somehow pull out all the electrical cables in the room plunging it into chaos and darkness. By the time I restored the lights, Buster was sitting on the bed, sans cone - with the cone nowhere in sight.

We have a cat that, because she likes to go outside occasionally, we put a collar on her with an ID tag. We prefer to use collars with elastic to help prevent choking hazards.

She kept it on for maybe .25 seconds.

Since she refused to keep it on, we decided to bite the bullet and get one without the elastic.

She tore that off with a little struggle.

We put it back on tight enough that she wouldn't be able to take it off, with just enough slack so that she didn't choke.

We watched her hurt herself in an effort to get that off.

We gave up: she now wanders without a collar. Though, thankfully, she rarely ventures beyond our patio.

Hehehe, no, he had just taken a trip to the potty.

Ewww...

I think we had the petting too much problem before, though. I also considered the other butt smell to be that according to his vet, cats with his allergies can have problems with certain glands.

Ewww...

Markus is quite the troublemaker this morning, and I have a headache again. I'm not his biggest fan at the moment. I don't know why the headaches keep coming like this - I'm getting plenty of rest, and I didn't feel like I was grinding last night. It could just be carryover I suppose.

In other news, I had some fantastically weird dreams last night. One of which was coming back to SoCal and going to the new Peet's in South Coast Plaza (there is none that I know of). I ended up having to go into the back room, which was more like a haunted attic with vampiric, diseased bats. Markus was back there, and I tried to save him, but then there were two other cats very similar, who were diseased with bat bites or something. I suddenly woke up.

When I went back to bed, I had a dream that I ended up in Japan. My grandma was there, and all my uncles and aunts were mostly alive. They lived on a beautiful house near the water (not likely in their hometown), and it was fantastic. I was looking forward to our flight out that night, since I'd only come in the day before to escort my grandma back home. I woke up again.

Then I had some weird short dream that I was out here and found out J was back in SoCal at his old apartment. He didn't tell me he was going back and I was pissed. I think it's a product of his being gone and I miss him terribly.

And now, headache.

In today's episode of workplace tomfoolery:

We've implemented a new strategy of requiring people to prepare annual budgets and to justify requests for additional funds. Shocking, I know. Why this didn't exist before I have no idea. I had suggested something like this a year ago, but TPTB didn't care until their newly-recruited trusted minion suggested it. Now it's the best idea EVAH! But I digress....

I created a whole Excel workbook for each unit. It has detailed expenditure pages for FY 07 (for an idea of past spending trends), FY 08 (going on now - to show whether current funds are keeping pace with expenditures), and FY09 (for further projections and to justify requests for additional FY09 funds). These worksheets all link to a summary page in fun Easter egg colors so someone like me can see at a glance a past/present/future view, plus a column for this year's ask.

And (this is important) to show whether there is, overall, a trend toward surplus or deficit from year to year.

One of our subunits has a HUGE surplus from previous years because their project was slow to get started. I mean almost 1M. Their project leader will argue every half-cent, pawn expenses off on other budgets, and in general is hoarding funds because ZOMG WHAT IF THEY RUN OUT?!?!?!?!!?! And I realize that funding is serious business, but we have units that are underfunded RIGHT NOW, and their surplus will carry them through both this biennium and the next.

So, what did they do with my spreadsheet? Deleted all my 07/08/09 data and instead put in 09/10/11 data so that it would not show their 900K+ carryover budget and instead demonstrate that ZOMG! they'll be underfunded in 2011! They need new permanent funds now!

As if I was just going to look at their "ask" column and not notice this change.

Now I have to fix it. Grrrr.

(And we won't even discuss the other unit which gave some employees temporary salary increases until they hire a new assistant director. We only okayed the increases after they demonstrated how their budget could cover the additional outlay. Now, of course, they've submitted a budget request for the TSIs, because they don't have the money for them. That actually got my normally mild-mannered boss steaming mad and nearly shouting "bullsh1t" over and over while she considered their request.)

Fascinating. The entire point of ostrakismos (http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/ORC_PAI/OSTRACISM.html) is to prevent any individual in a democracy from having too much power. Could you form a voting block and get rid of your CEO? If not then it rather much goes against the grain of the entire concept.

The adverse vote simply implied that his power was so great as to be injurious to the state . Ostracism must therefore be carefully distinguished from exile in the Roman sense, which involved loss of property and status

What you describe sounds more like the Roman sense of exile. Complete loss of title plus banishment forever.

Alex

Just to be sure, you do realize that my post was a joke? We don't really take a vote and fire someone? I just think it is a fate worthy of people who microwave popcorn in an office space.

I just got home from work and no squirrels fell out of sky and onto my head today. As a matter of fact, I didn't even see one squirrel today, and that's unusual.

Thurston went to the groomers today. It was his first grooming experience. He helped like a abandoned baby when I left him and when I got back to pick him up, he was sitting happily in his crate doing the pug head tilt at me while I talked to him. He didn't decide he didn't want to be in thi crate until he saw Amy, then he started yelping. I think he likes Amy better than he likes me. I suppose that's good since he's spending the day with her tomorrow.

The cats were getting high on their home-grown Humbolt until Aleister got stuck in the bag and went tearing off around the house the the darned bag chasing him.

Never a dull moment in this household.

So, Ken and I are driving up to see my mom tomorrow. She's not doing well at all - three emergency surgeries this week, and is being kept sleep-induced 99% of the time, on liquid nutrition and ventilator, etc. Her body is just not healing like it should, and more biopsies have been ordered. During a moment of consciousness, she gave the affirmative hand signal that she wants me there, so we're going.

Ken will be flying back Sunday evening, and I will be staying at least through the week, so my presence here might be sporadic at best. Thanks to all of you for your support and thoughts/prayers.

I have a bizarre cough this morning. Especially not thrilled because there is a supposed "chicken pox" outbreak, as well as a number of other cold/flu issues going on up here. I'm prone to getting shingles, and this is a baaaddd thing for me. For the most part, I stay home and work and only do grocery shopping and the occasional fun thing, so it's not a problem, except that today I am taking out one of J's co-workers for lunch. Bleh. Chicken Pox, what a crock these days...

Some kid at my daughters school had chicken pox last week and then sent home a note warning us all about it and reminding us the the pox-shot is now mandatory. But the catch to the vaccination is that it only lasts so long. So now all these kids will be getting the pox as adults rather than kids.

Back in my day, my parents had "pox parties". As soon as a kid in the neighborhood had it we all were sent over there to play which took care of that issue toot-sweet.

Fortunately I used my parents remedy before the shot was required and both the kids have had it.

Oh, I should say that's not what I'm alarmed about. I've had chicken pox before.. the real deal, not the useless shot that they're telling everyone to get boosters for. My problem is getting shingles, the adult form of chicken pox that is usually designated for people at least 2.5 times my age. I got it a few years ago, and my doctor suggested it may be either a lowered immune system (which I find shocking considering how many sick people I came across while I was working as a dental assistant), or that my body is just somehow susceptible. My mom has had it a couple of times before, too... I'm writing it off as genetics.

At any rate, I don't want any pocked children near me so that I can become some sort of herpetic rash of a girl. I don't have insurance this time, and can't really afford to deal with this sort of thing right now.

Ah.. the Vagina Monologues.

Last year that show was in town, and some woman called our salon and left this horribly long message on our answering machine , asking if we'd like to purchase tickets to a special matinee, with said matinee's proceeds being donated to some local charity. We had several little old ladies in the waiting room, and the woman on the machine must have said vagina about 20 times, each time with this weird emphasis (I think she felt empowered saying it, or something...) and quite loudly. The women turned bright pink and finally one spoke up and said " She seems very enthusiastic about that word, doesn't she?" It was a tad bit awkward.

First, we took Thurston to Central Park in Huntington Beach for brunch with a bunch of other pugs (and a Radio, our niece's greyhound), then played in the dog park for a couple of hours. Thurston made friends with a HUGE Bernese Mountain Dog. :) Radio had a better time on the "small dog" side of the fence. :) We revived ourselves at Peet's in the afternoon before heading over to my MIL's house to celebrate her 80th birthday with the rest of the family. In other news... I decided to make eggs in the basket with a new bread. I have an awful time cooking them just right with normally sliced bread, so since I have this fine parmesan-basil sourdough, I figured it would be my chance.

Almost there!

Needed to be less thick on the bread and more cut out toward the edges. I had to 'fix' it by microwave to get the interior a little more cooked, which ruined my yolks, which I like runny.... But, I am almost there... and the bread was fantastic with it!

I would be totally happy to support her in any way she'd like - though I think sometimes it's really hard to tell (even minute to minute) whether you'd like to take your mind off what you're feeling, or to be away from things that remind you of your loved one. No dear... IBS. Usually gets me following the cumulative effects of what I ate during the day (translation: it's usually dinner that tips the scale on having an issue), so I usually suffer from it early in the morning, about 8 hours after whatever caused the problem (because I've learned not to eat things that will cause problems immediately)

Honestly? With my dad having a cancer that has a 5-year survival rate of 12%, I wish I was pregnant.

Yeah, I need to plant more herbs in my front yard - assuming the association gardners don't come along and hack at them again. Just before Thanksgiving (when I was planning on bagging up excess rosemary to give away), they came along with edgers and hacked away half my rosemary and completely destroyed my strawberries (which had half-formed berries on them, dammit!)

I want basil, but I'm afraid they'll nail it. Still might plant it though. Or some sage or thyme.

Have you got a deck (or anything like that) you know most herbs (and berries) do well in pots.

That said, I miss the herb garden from VA, I've not found a good spot for putting pots of herbs in the apartment.

Morrigoon
02-20-2008, 05:21 PM
Snowflake: in my hands, nothing does well in pots. I have the brownest thumb this side of WeHo.

That being said, I have managed to grow a pretty cool avocado plant from a seed. Although at 20" tall, it is no longer "thriving" in the Nine Fine Irishmen glass/vase I have it in. The edges of the leaves are browning on me. May be because the water level got low, we'll see if it perks now (added more water and placed it outside for some sunshine... just before the rain started, LOL). Anyway, I know darn well it's outgrown the glass and is ready to be transplanted into actual soil, but I'm afraid I'll kill it the second it goes into a pot. Growing something in a glass is one thing... I can put that on my kitchen table where I'll see it and know when it's low on water. Gimme a large, mostly immobile pot and it's a whole new ballgame.

I'm serious about the brown thumb... I even killed an aloe vera plant once.

But if it's in my front garden, with sprinklers and sunshine and soil, maybe, just maybe, herbs will have a chance. Again, provided they don't get butchered by the association's gardening hacks. Maybe if I surround my herbs with nice tall snapdragons or something...

Most of the region is under a Winter Storm Warning from tonight through the day on Friday.... lows falling back into the 20s by the early morning hours. Light snowfall should begin at some point after midnight... Icing looks to be a bigger player in this storm. Icing amounts appear they could reach up to a quarter of an inch in some places, which would cause travel problems as well as power outages

Soooo.... As you may remember, back in January we went with Verizon FioS for our cable and internet service. At that time, I called Charter to cancel our cable service. They were supposed to pick up the cable box. They never did.

Yesterday, we got a notice from Charter saying that we haven't been paying our bill, and that our service was about to be disconnected. WTF??

I called Charter customer (dis)service. They had no record of our cancellation request. they had a record that I called, but no request.

They magnanimously agreed to cancel our service as of today, but we would still have to pay the bill. "I don't think so", I said, and asked to speak to a supervisor. Spoke to the supervisor and got the same old song and dance. So I hung up. After a few minutes on the internet I had the number for Charter Communications corporate office in St Louis.

I couldn't get connected to the CEO's office, but I did get the voicemail of the CFO. His voicemail gave me an option to connect to someone who could help me with an unresolved customer service issue. "why, thank you!"

Within seconds, I was talking to Francie. Francie was nice. Francie was helpful. Francie was apologetic. Francie canceled my account effective 1/18/08. Francie told me that someone would be out tomorrow to pick up the box, and that i didn't owe them a dime. I think Francie is my new (platonic) girlfriend.

So, if anyone is having problems with Charter, call (314)965-0555, ask to be connected to Mr Fisher's office, pick the unresolved customer service issue choice, And maybe Francie will make you all happy and tingly too!

ETA: And now Bill and I are going to go have lunch at Arby's to celebrate my triumph over the corporate world!

Great - now I'm craving Arby's and Ryan took the car to work today. ;)

Okay - I've been keeping this pretty mum, but I had a really good interview Wednesday (by phone, of course). It was a total surprise interview from an unexpected source. (I mean, yes I intentionally applied there, but I didn't think for a second I'd get considered - I just wanted an excuse to send out my new cover letter.)

I don't know that I'll get the job, but I did seem to have a good rapport with potential boss and the staff. In fact, when I called the assistant back yesterday to ask a follow-up question, she sounded thrilled to hear from me and then said "oh! so-and-so is here and they want to talk to you, too!" and handed the phone to the other staff member, who wanted to make sure I had her direct phone line in case I had questions. I mean, she didn't have to do that, right? If they knew they didn't want me, they wouldn't both have talked to me, right?

Anyhow, now it's a waiting game. I know I was the second of three planned interviews, but the third isn't scheduled until mid-March. I'm going to call in a week when the bar exam is over, though, and see if I can interest them in an in-person interview. (I have another excuse to call, too, since there's a particular project they were telling me about that's fascinating that will be wrapped up by then and they've already invited me to call back and find out how it all went.)

It's a total surprise and in an area of law I'd never considered focusing on - but now that I'm thinking about it, it sounds like something I really might enjoy.

Anyhow, I know this is all vague and all, but crossed fingers and all that....
