So the final in today's class is optional. He's going to take our mid-term grade and use that for the final, or we can do the final.

I'm probably going to use the midterm grade. I think I kicked some butt on that test.

I'd love for you to come fix it, but we'll see what the dunderhead from AT&T does first. If he biffs it, I will call the CoasterMatt. :)

If anyone knows someone who has some spare time and wants to make a couple of bucks, please PM me. We need someone to help us do some grassroots web promotion - mainly browsing the web for appropriate myspace pages, blogs etc and posting some stuff about some of the releases on our labels.

It doesn't pay much ($10/hr for 15-20 hrs a week) - but it's a pretty casual place to work and it could actually be fun...

They call all their salesmen managers, so it was a basic car sales job with a base pay of minimum wage. Fvck that. If I was to do straight commission sales, I'd a) stick with my real estate, which pays better, or b) get a job at a local dealership, not one 40 miles away.

So hows the weather doing for all of you?

Our homeowners association is voting tonight to authorize funding for the construction of an Arc.

I better not hear the word "drought" in these parts for at least two years.

(Note: For all you SoCal folks the term "weather" refers to seasonal fluxuations in temperature ranging from sub-freezing to over 100 degrees combined with various types of precipitation, wind and humidity. It is not the equivalent of asking "Will it be partly cloudy or partly sunny today?".

a high pressure zone building over the southwest will send temperatures into the 'icky hot' ranges for all southern california areas over the next week or so, with inland and desert areas forecasted to reach well over 100*F starting wednesday this week. energy use forecasted for the coming weeks is in the 'extreme' demand category, with local enery supply companies urging sparing use during the hottest parts of the day.

On a related note, due to the drought in GA, citizens have been conserving water. The water company is losing revenue, and is raising rates to make up for it. So now people in GA are paying more money for less water.

Does anyone remember if that happened here during the our drought and water conservation efforts? I wasn't old enough to care about bills at the time ;)

Can go with in general. Water consumption is down due to drought-like conditions. Did the water companies raise their rates?

We've had four inches of rain since Friday. We had my "fete de bar" at work yesterday. My coworkers decorated the conference room with many photocopied pages from legal documents and pictures of the state seal (ork! ork!), Judge Judy, and Bull from Night Court. And, to top it off, this cartoon. (http://waxy.org/random/images/weblog/eldred.jpg)

The sad part was when I realized I could not only name the case and discuss the policy issues pro and con, but I even knew who had written the majority opinion.

"Oh... we have these name tags.", She showed me an oversized magnetized version of the standard "My name is _______" badge, "Most Mini owners name their cars."

Oddly, I found this job through Monster.

But, it took a lot of time and focus to read through what are the good jobs and what are the bad jobs. For me, I'm not a sales person, but guess what floods the marketing category? Sales jobs. I mean, I could probably do it, but I better understand the framework and enjoy it, and would wear down easily with the sales process, as lucrative as sales can sometimes be. I could tell this company had a clear definition of what it was doing based on its job description for this position. (Wow, someone gets it!) They seem to have a grasp of what their business is and what jobs actually entail, something I appreciate to the fullest and could tell from the advert.

I just checked the job pages with my company, and there's nothing open in OC or LA. I don't know what you're specifically looking for, but if I ever see something that has Morrigoon written all over it, I'll send it to you right away.

To speed the Monster.com process, I opened everything in tabs, went through and immediately closed out the ones where I didn't meet the minimum requirements (even when fairly close to meeting it), read the other descriptions, eliminated those that sounded fishy and/or weren't in the right category for me, and then researched the rest. It made the process pretty simple and quick... the weeding process, anyway.

I figured that I put a lot of time in arranging my resume around the position, I put care and effort into cover letters and presentation - why waste my time with too many positions, possibly blowing all of them from being over-extended.

Oddly, I found this job through Monster. The last two people we hired were through Monster. Like any system, it is not going to be perfect. If one is in a fairly specialized field/position, then Monster is probably not the answer. We were looking for graphic artist/customer service type positions, so it worked well for us.

Depending on what you do, finding headhunters in your field can be beneficial . But these people are often snakes, so you have to keep a watch on them. Snakes that can help you, but snakes none-the-less.

So I just noticed that the soap/shampoo/conditioner dispenser in the gym shower here at work is branded with the catchy name "The Despenser II".

II?!

The thing is nothing more than a couple of glorified hand lotion pump bottles turned upside down and stuck into a plastic box that's got a couple holes for mounting screws.

What fatal design flaw could possibly have plagued The Dispenser Mark I to have prompted a radical redesign worthy of the "II" moniker, as if to say, "We know there were serious flaws in our legacy product, however rest assured that this all new, 2nd generation design has been meticulously engineered to address all of your shampoo dispensing concerns."

I'm supposed to give an answer tomorrow. At first I wasn't going to consider the job because it's with financial management and I don't want to do fiscal any more - and I'm concerned that if I take the same kind of job I have now it will really look like I just abandoned my law degree -- a potential problem if I decide to leave the program or not continue in government work. Plus, they offered rock bottom salary.

But, they also offered relocation expenses, a 9K signing bonus, and have already upped the offer once, and say that if I submit a competitive offer they will consider it in a recalculation.

Plus, I talked to them more today and 1) the financial management department works with all the giant bids and, while the contracts department does more, the financial management department also does a lot of legal research. Most of their people have never had exposure to case law, so it's a big learning curve. Apparently they are all excited about maybe getting a combo legal/fiscal mind. 2) we are not "locked in" to our initial areas. If I hate it, I can move to a different area - like contracts, space policy, etc...

So, I'm giving it serious consideration.

So, I'm giving it serious consideration.Sounds neat!

I hit a bird today. It flew out of the bushes right in front of my car. There was a "thump" and then a flurry of feathers in the rear view mirror.

This is the third dead bird in a week. I wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something.Time to start walking to work?

We can toast our bagels!!

Our HR overlord, who has been at the company forever, has been given a new title and new responsibilities. This is the woman who at one point forbade real knives in the break area to cut bagels with. For a couple of months we were cutting bagels with plastic knives. It felt like Milo in the Phantom Tollbooth, moving a pile of sand with tweezers.

Yesterday a coworker joked, "Now that she's gone, maybe we'll get to have a toaster for our bagels." Lo and behold, toasters!!!

It's a brand new era.

Eh gads it is hot. Thurston made it until about 12:30 before I determined it was too hot for a pug to be outside. He got to come home to a relatively cool house while I went back out in the trenches.

I did get to take a short sroll through the new wetlands area and saw some magnificent wild flowers in bloom. I hope to do the whole 3 mile trail before they all wilt in the heat. I will try and bring my camera along as well. I can't handle a camera, 2 dogs and a couple of poops bags all at once.

Oh, dude, it IS a holiday to me, now. It will be the weekly holiday signifying that for the following two days I'll be able to see my husband instead of, whilst half-asleep, feeling him sink into bed at 5 am. And then seeing a snoring blankety lump of him when I wake up to leave for work. And then sitting alone in a quiet house when I return.

I am so not lovin' his new night job - it'll be at least several months before it's done. On the up-side, he makes in three months what I make in six. I'm not sure it's enough to make up for the two partial-days we'll get to see each other weekly, though. Maybe it'll be easier when I'm not having such a crappy work week - and when I'm not sick.

Alex

GC, my heart goes out to you. I lost a friend who seems to meet this exact description two years ago today. She too was a wonderful person and one of my best friends. Also she died of Cancer. Always keep the memories you have of your friend close to your heart. Every once-in-awhile it will hurt because you miss that person but in my case I can think of no one better to watch over me from Heaven than my friend, Barbara Ann.

Circe (her nickname) I love you and I miss you a lot. You are always close to my heart and I will love and remember you forever!

You're never alone on the LoT. We are all here for one another. :snap:

I'm sorry for your loss as well, GC. That is so sad.

I've been rather busy lately. My wife accidently discharged her Epypen into her thumb. A full dose (which she got) is enough to cause the circulation to shut off completely and can cause the tissue to die, requiring amputation. And her being diabetic and having high blood pressure makes it worse. It's looking good right now, but another day or two will tell for sure.
