So we saw a bald eagle walking on the side of the road today on the way back from Gainesville (driving through farmland on the way to Homosassa/Crystal River/Spring/Whatever-It's-Called). Just sauntering. We turned around to see if it was injured, but it didn't seem to be and flew up onto a fence post. So I snapped a picture and a short while after it flew off. Really. Freaking. Cool.

In other news, (yeah, yeah, should be in the other thread, but whatever) wind's picked up on the Gulf and it's rainy. More humidity than I've experienced in a LONG time - even the Floridians are complaining. Flying over NO on the way over here, I couldn't help but feel concern over Gustav and how strong it's getting. I guess I should just be thankful that it's not going directly over us... we're just getting bristled by the finger tips.

Oh, and the Gators won. This Saturday I maayyyy try getting tix to the Miami game, though I fear it will be packed and I won't be able to get there in time to actually park and get my seat. :( So, I should just take it easy and get a few beers at the ESPN zone at WDW and watch the game from there with my Gator gear on.

Tomorrow we're going to some spring.. or we're going to go tubing on the (guessing on the spelling) Itchatucknee. It all sounds like fun.

I could live in Florida. It's pretty.

So Jack the beagle, the hubbo, and I are out walking this morning, going a totally new route.

We pass by a chainlink fence with an angry pomeranian on the other side. The pomeranian barked. Jack, merry musician of the meadow that he is, bayed back. This infuriated the pomeranian.

But the angriest of all was the pomeranian's owner. "I'm gonna beat him!" he screamed over the barking and baying. "No, you ain't! You ain't gonna!" his wife screamed back.

We left the three of them barking and screaming at each other.

Yesterday I was at the recycling center dropping off a trunkful of the detritus of my life. An elderly woman was dropping off her stuff and tut-tutting as she picked up little scraps of whatever that other people had left outside the bins. She complimented me on the crate I keep in my trunk so I was feeling more charitable towards her until she tsked me for not separating newsprint with colored ink from the rest of the newspapers. The newspaper bin clearly says "inserts okay" but I still put anything on slick paper in the household paper bin.

If you think she's correct please keep it to yourself. I'm not separating my newspapers by color. I don't even do that with my laundry.

Yes, they went into Chapter 11 last month.

But currently they are closing only 26 stores, mostly in California, Arizona, and Texas.

Facts I just learned looking that up: Mervyn's was founded here in the East Bay and until 2004 was owned by Target. Fact you just learned about Mervyn's: for my first wedding we registered at Mervyn's; I had no idea what a charger is, had no idea why we would want one, and after that argument just walked around lettering her put anything she wanted into the registry without comment.

I bought a lamp for my sewing room today but it doesn't work. Of course I figured that out after I took it out of the box and broke down all the cardboard. I got in back in the box in a reasonable fascimile of how it started so that I can return it. But I really didn't want to run any errands tomorrow.

And I have a sewing room! It still needs a lot of work (paint, new curtains, minor stuff like that) but I boxed up everything that's still being stored in there and pushed the boxes against the wall. I got a desk at IKEA for my sewing machine and now I'm ready to go. Except for the lighting issue.

I've found grandparents, great great aunts & uncles, my parents, aunts, uncles. I don't think I've ever seen photos of some of them when they were younger. And it's freaky how much some of the younger generations look just like older ones. My cousin Rob looks almost exactly like his grandfather in High School.

So, I'm heading off to the valley in a half hour for an interview at a temp agency regarding an entertainment job they have posted.

Already, the recruiter called me and asked, "Won't you take office positions at other companies?"

I'm very apprehensive about this interview in the first place, because 8 years ago, I went to an entertainment-centric temp agency with a consistent 2+ years experience from 2 different television stations, and they butchered my resume to make it look like I was the receptionist at those stations (I was a floor director and studio camera operator), and from that point, they'd only offer me entry level desk positions. And, when I'd look at their job boards and see several in-studio production assistant positions or needed camera ops, they'd seriously tell me, "But, your resume is for office work. We usually send men out on the physical jobs." (In hindsight, I do realize I could have sued them for not only that statement, but other gender-related ones that they consistently made.)

My 6-years-of-personal-cubical-hell recent office job is not even listed on my resume now, because it doesn't even fit with what I've been doing. And, this "first crunchy fruit" named agency better as hell not "doctor" my resume, unless it's to enhance the skills that I listed. That prior experience was mostly why I gave up and went to the cubicle job for those 6 years.

I'll seriously take working for $12 an hour at our neighborhood Costco before I'll agree to answering phones for $10 at a place 50 miles away. I refuse to return to administrative cubicle limbo, thank you very much. Now, will I travel 50 miles away to help run a video vault with just some basic editing duties for that same amount? You bet. And, that's the job they're currently showing available.

I'm just hoping that I don't come across as stubborn or bitchy when I say, "Sorry, but I want that one. If it's not available or won't match with me this time, then please keep me in mind only for similar positions."

I can't stand recruiters sales people who only give a crap about their commissions and never about the people they're supposedly trying to help.

Yes, they will be outdated. But it's what sells NOW, and that's what matters if you're selling your house.

If I see one more square of travertine tile I'll puke, but if I want to get the most out of my house, I'll damn well put travertine in if I can afford it because that's what makes people go "oooooh."

People do some really unfortunate remodels to their homes based on trends. The remodels are good for a few years then they look old and dated and the home loses value. That's not the result you want from any sort of remodel. I've seen some really tacky and sad things done to what was good architecture. A smart home owner won't make bad choices unless they plan on a) living there for ever or b) are willing to do another remodel when it comes time to sell.

I wish there were more suggestions in that article for things to do if you have no budget. I replaced the carpet and vinyl downstairs with laminate, which was apparently approved, and my paint colors are definitely not 80s (cream, yellow, mint green, yellow-green, strong light blue, and fire-engine red), but I can't afford to ditch the giant-ass mirrors or put in new light fixtures - much less spring for new countertops and appliances.

BarTopDancer
09-03-2008, 10:26 AM
I completely agree with the article. If you want your house to sell, especially in this market you need to bring it up to date, make it appealing to what others will want and what other houses have.

No one is saying to get rid of that stuff if you like it and don't plan on moving. But if you are trying to sell and your house looks like it belongs on the set of a WHAM video then you shouldn't be surprised when it doesn't sell.

katiesue

Solid advice since people are idiots and things that should have zero effect on a home's value do. However, if when shopping for a home anything in this section affects your decision making process I hereby label you an idiot.

Isn't that special?
The last thing to consider inside your house is furniture and finishing touches. While classic wood furniture will look good in any decade, there are some signs of the times that need to be banished forever.

If you have upholstered chairs and couches in a dated, splashy print you might consider recovering them in something a little less distracting such as stain-resistant microfiber, Patterson says. Some bold patterns are making a comeback, however. So thumb through current magazines and catalogs to help you decide whether you're truly passé or incredibly ahead of the design curve.

Glass coffee tables with a very ornate iron base can be updated with a simple wood or stone pedestal.Art is subjective, but here are some things to think about:

Is it time to ditch the statue with the dancing figures?

Do you really need that statue of fertility deity Kokopelli from your Southwest period?

When was the last time you saw a Nagel-type print outside of a hair or nail salon? Also, consider the scale of your accessories on fireplace mantels and shelves, Patterson says. Candles and vases sold at home stores today are wider and taller and look better in groupings rather than alone, Patterson says.

And a word about windows: In the 1980s, window treatments were full of flowers and frills, and drapes sported ornate valances. "We are moving away from all those ruffles," Mayhugh says.

Ditch any vertical blinds you have because they look cheap and invariably become mangled and dirty. Replace them with plantation-style shutters, flat-paneled drapes or curtains with a subtle inverted pleat.

Yes, the need to update it... my complaint comes with their specific suggestions, I think they go too far.

Then don't take their advice, but don't wonder why the houses don't sell. It is crucial that a person can picture it as their home. Outdated decor brings them out of the imagination state and into a warped reality of completely outdated furniture and design.

Solid advice since people are idiots and things that should have zero effect on a home's value do. However, if when shopping for a home anything in this section affects your decision making process I hereby label you an idiot.Agreed. If it will be gone by the time you move in, at no cost to you, it's meaningless.

Why so much vitriol, BTD? You think I don't know what buyers are looking for in a home? My point was that I think the suggestions were a bit overboard in what should be done, and that some suggestions were things that would quickly become dated themselves.

And please... ripping out a wall mirror in a bathroom? Yes a framed mirror is cute, but when you're talking about repairing or replacing drywall, you're talking about a much bigger endeavor than most home sellers would or should consider.

You wanna do simple things that will improve your home's saleability? Remove half your furniture and take all family photos off the wall.

Not vitriol. I was saying if you don't like the suggestions then don't take them. I hear vents and gripes from my co-workers on a daily basis how the people they are trying to help move refuse to update their house and expect the buyer to accept it how it is because that is how they (the seller) likes it. Instead the homes are on the market for much longer than other homes in the area that did make an effort to update a bit. What the article is suggesting is true. One has to be willing to update their house to sell.

Pru, do what you can and work with what you have. It sounds like you're doing a great job of making your place totally marketable by updating the flooring and the stove. A good agent will also be able to make suggestions that help downplay the things that could be problematic (outdated counters, paint colors).

When looking for a house, I would want fairly new cabinets, counters, plumbing, flooring and windows. Why? Because those things would require major overhauls that I don't want to deal with when moving. Now, painted walls, wall trims, etc. I don't really care about, because that stuff can be fixed in a weekend without really any effort. To me, it says the owner actually gave a crap about their home and is not just trying to dump their well-used crap. Those things don't have to be the top-of-the-line expensive items, but they should be newer than 10 years at the oldest, even if it's just new linoleum flooring.

In other subjects, I wish I hadn't gone to the interview yesterday, because sure enough - after sitting through their "process" for nearly two hours, they told me the position was recently filled. To make matters worse, they don't validate parking, so I ended up paying $15, besides all the gas to get there.

On a good note though, I spent the rest of the day at a nearby friend's house and checked my email to find a response for another position that I applied for, asking me for references and that they'll call me to set up an interview, because they really like my samples and resume. It's an awesome position too - lots of editing involved! :)

If that's the company I think it is, they have a reputation for doing just that.

Many temp agencies put out non-existent jobs to lure people in. After putting them through the testing they say the job has been filled. Then they call to get you to take jobs you're not interested in.

I had a placement from an agency that was terrible. I was supposed to be working on some data entry stuff (according to the agency). When I got there the job was to stuff envelopes in the basement mail room. Sadly (or not) I have a good work ethic and stuck through the day. I called the agency to tell them and they said that was the position they told me about. Uh, ok. I told them I didn't want to go back to that company. They called me 3 more times to go back and do that "same job". I finally told them I had gotten full time work elsewhere.

I've had mixed results from Agencies. I got the last two jobs I've had through agencies with no issues. Years ago an agency sent me for an interview for a job at CAA. The job consisted of literally sitting in a room all day and typing in contracts. The agency told them I typed 70 wpm. Uh no - maybe 45ish on a good day. I immediatley told the lady who was interviewing me - she was totally pissed, not at me but the agency. If it was something I could have maybe picked up or something I may have fudged it but the job was just typing all day long they would have quickly figured it out.

I landed a pretty good gig through a different agency. They needed someone to do very heavy filing and some very light data entry work. It paid well and it was a 2 month job. I took it, finished the filing within a week. They had an opening for a M-F 40 hour summer job posted on Monster doing the same thing with more responsibilities and the manager said if I applied through there it was mine, but the position wasn't approved through to be listed through agency. So I applied on a Thursday, they had me come in on Friday for some data entry work, "interviewed" me and hired me for the summer job, starting Monday. I walk in on Monday and they said they let the other guy (permanent employee) go and offered the permanent position with more money and benefits.

FROM A CAT'S DIARY

DAY 752

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair ... must try this on their bed.

DAY 765

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was ... Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768

I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer ..." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time ...

I didn't have time to catch up entirely on this thread, nor the 1,028 posts that have happened since I checked on here last (which, for that matter, I think was only a few days ago... seriously guys... are your fingers sore? Wait... don't answer that...).

But I caught that T seems to have some good news in the steadiness of income department... Grats lady!

My life has been very busy, up to and including tonight's gala for the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Assoc. I picked up some really cute heels that I plan to wear at a wedding in a couple of weeks. Apparently, they need some massive inserts and I am out of practice with 4" heels. But f*** they are sexy... if sexy means you sit on your ass all night because walking to the venue was enough for you.

So, inserts it is!

Really miss being home. Really miss my kitty. Just tired of being on the road with absolutely no consistent schedule. I think it would almost be easier if I didn't jump time zones three times in the past two weeks... if I didn't get a chance to see home for two days... if I was just gone and sleeping in one bed for a substantial period of time. And this effing humidity... YOw! I had no idea it would be this drastic from Utah... then again... Cali felt humid last week.

A recent spin through Target revealed that heels are apparently going to be "in" this fall and winter. Holy God, they are HOT HOT HOT too! Not ugly pointy toes or anything, but adorable ones with bows and pleats and low buckles, rounded toes, eeeeeeeee!

I love wearing heels! But, it takes a very special shoe to make heel-wearing comfortable for me. I generally stay in the 2-3" range which makes me 6' or 6'1". A heel much higher than that and I can't walk (at least not attractively). But, I also love being tall.

My equilibrium is pretty messed up and anything above 2-3 inches is not fun to walk in. I do have 4in boots that I love but the zipper broke. It seems all the cute shoes have 4in heels these days.

Four inch heels are a bit much. Shoes are one of my weaknesses. I buy heels that I know I'll never wear. Just because they're pretty. My latest pair came from Target- brown heels, round toes, that kind of look like they're made of wood. I'm trying to find a good pair of high-heel Mary Janes, and a pair to replace some I had that looked very 30s.

I'm glad to hear that the fashion will be round toes! I really hated the pointy toe ones and never bought any of those.

On that job, I haven't heard back after my last response, so no meeting date/time has been set yet, but I'm not losing hope - it's the weekend, and most people don't do business on the weekend. There's also interest from a non-profit that pays somewhat decent, and I could easily do both jobs, which would be 45 hours combined, mostly working at home (and with the way I work, that's only 3-4 days, leaving some nice time to work on History Treks). If I do get both, we'd have about $3,000 per month after expenses. My gods, the things we could do! Like, rebuild the empty savings, save for a house, take another cruise, and also buy some needy kids a really awesome Christmas, and actually afford nice gifts for friends. :D

Found an interesting article on how they're cutting school busing costs. Most interesting was the "walking bus" - where the kids are walking to school, but in an adult-supervised group. I actually really like this idea. It strikes a compromise between parent concerns for safety and a very healthy exercise regimen for the kids (with the side benefit of savings on gas and benefits to the environment).

I actually really like this idea. It strikes a compromise between parent concerns for safety and a very healthy exercise regimen for the kids (with the side benefit of savings on gas and benefits to the environment).

The elementary school I went to didn't offer busing at all. Everybody walked except for a few cases of getting dropped off by parents. From second grade on I did the walk and I did it by myself. The intersections immediately adjacent to the school had crossing guards (a cadre consisting of volunteers from the 5th and 6th grade).

Worked fine and hardly anybody got raped, murdered, run over, or kidnapped by aliens.

So I like the walking but I find the need for constant adult supervision to be silly.

Scrooge McSam
09-08-2008, 03:29 PM
Sooooo....

Haven't seen this username for a while, have you?

I just wanted to explain my absence.

Two weeks ago, I slipped on the wet concrete in my garage and broke my knee (lateral tibia plateau fracture) and just had surgery this last Thursday to correct it.

You old folks will understand... Kids slip, they fall. Adults just can't do that; they have to flail around trying everything they can to keep from falling. Well, in all that flailing around, my knee bent to the inside instead of to the front, effectively snapping off the top of my tibia.

Doc says he's pleased with the reconstruction, but I'm to put NO weight on my leg for the next 6 weeks. I'm back home now, but as you can imagine, I'm not up to 100% yet so online time will still be curtailed for the forseeable future.

I'm not gone... just hobbled.

My advice for anyone finding themselves in a similar situation...

1. Just fall... all that scrambling around you're prone to do when you feel yourself falling is just likely to injure you more.

2. Call an ambulance... they're not just for heart attack or stroke victims. If I'd called one, I would already be 2 weeks into the healing process, not just beginning it.

Now, with that public service announcement out of the way, I've got some 1900 messages to catch up on. Wish me luck ;)

PS... If anyone is acquainted with the chemist who first formulated Lorcet, give them a big wet kiss in the mouth for me. He/she may look at you funny, but I'll feel better.

It's good to be back. I've missed you all.

I see lots of kids walking to school everyday. We live in a fairly small town though.

What angers me is they took the crossing gaurds away last year. I don't think K-6 should all be crossing busy streets on their own. Not to say the 6th graders aren't more than capable but the kindergarteners are not.

If the kids need adult supervision to walk then I'm ok with that, it may seem silly, but in this day and age you hear a lot of awful stories. So I guess better safe than sorry.

Scrooge- feel better soon! That sounds painful but I'm glad your doc says you're healing.

Kids walking to school- good idea. I think too many parents are too paranoid, but the first time *anything* bad happens, everybody's going to absolutely scream, so adult supervision is probably a reasonable precaution on the part of the school.

Crossing guards are only nominally for the kids- sure it means they do get across safely, but especially close to the school, it's in large part so traffic will actually flow. Without some control, intersections can bottleneck. A couple of kids start to cross, the cars stop, since the cars are stopped, a few more kids cross...

So I guess I support either crossing guards or adult supervision while walking to school. Maybe not both together, but I can see both being useful.

I bought a new shirt at Target last week. I usually don't wear any sort of patterns or anything other than solid colors, but this shirt caught my eye and I thought I looked pretty good when I tried it on. It's blue, long sleeved (rolled to elbows) with white stripes. The blue stripes are an inch or so wide and the white stripes are around 1/4" surrounded by small lighter blue stripes.

The point is that after I bought the shirt and decided I liked it, I looked at the label. "Preppy Shirt". Really? "Preppy"? Is this 1985 and no one told me?

Eta: It's this one (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-9/qid=1220982635/ref=sr_1_9/602-9626802-6385464?ie=UTF8&index=target&asin=B0016A7PQU&rh=k%3Amossimo%20athletic%20fit&page=1) only darker blue.

Ha, CM, I think I might feel faint myself. When I've met him, I have been tongue tied and overwhelmed. I don't even remember if I introduced myself and I KNOW I didn't introduce my husband. :blush: {never will I live that down, btw...}

AND since we're talkin', I heard Bon Jovi and 'Bad Medicine' in the car earlier and I was jumping around thinking I really need to see them live.....I know your wife is a big fan. ;)

Actually, no. I know, I know, it is an cult favorite, but, as someone who has had a few spinals, the name, all on its own, has kept me from even glancing.

I know, not anything to do with one another but what can I say? The name makes me wince....

yeah, like a lot of what you say is suggestive enough already!! LOL I've been to the ladies thread.....:p

Are you insinuating that there is a possibility that some of my posts have been in some way suggestive?!?
