ToriBear and I are going on a school trip tomorrow for three days, to Port Townsend, Wa. It's close to the area where 'Twilight' takes place, so she's pretty jazzed. It's for three days, and it should be fun if all the fundies in the home school program don't ruin it. I'm reading 'The Golden Compass' during the trip- I figure that should keep anyone I wouldn't like away from me. Kind of like religious wolfbane.:D

Where's the health inspector, maybe you're wondering? Our county doesn't have one. Hasn't had one for over three years, maybe it's four.
How is the county allowed not to have a health inspector ?!?!?!

I had a wonderful day today, training to represent my fellow coworkers.

Then I came home to my happy little puppies and kitties.

Then my beautiful wife came home.

Life is good.
This made me verklempt. Really. I love it when life is good.

I had the good fortune to get an all-clear for my shoulder from the specialist, and the first day of scooter training went really well. I felt like Gina Lollobrigida buzzing around the streets of Rome on my little Vespa !!

Awesome news! :snap: So what color is your little scooter?

Dear Steph...

It's lipstick red. It's also gone. Bear and I tried and tried to start it, but because neither of us could get Learner's Permits (until now) it felt unloved and got constipated (or whatever the mechanical equivalent is).

So the nice man we purchased it from came and took it away for rehab...and it will have been in and out of the CBD twice and still has no km's (miles) on the clock.

Bear is currently organising a folding ramp so we can get it on and off our truck. This has to be the most spoiled scooter on the planet, as we seem to always be carrying, pushing or rolling it somewhere. I've even charged its battery twice, but have yet to see it light up.

We hope to actually ride the scooter one day. A bit.

Love and hugs,

The Stoat XXX.

What he said... LOL.

(btw: for the learners course, they loan you a scooter... mine was blue. But the Red ones go faster. :D )

.....and the real reason we chose Red was because it is statistically more visible to motorists than other colours. Not because the red ones go faster. No, really. I wouldn't make this up, ya know.

Bear and Stoat- I hope your little red scooter feels more loved in the near future and chooses to work properly. I agree that red is more visible to motorists and is a good choice.

I do know about finicky vehicles- we keep stuffed animal mascots in the cars so they feel loved. Your little scooter riding in the back of the truck made me giggle- I thought of the joke about how Harley Davidson motorcycles are like dogs- both like to ride around in the back of pickup trucks.

On another another note - accidental bunny progress!

So our bunny sitter apparently took a day to get the hang of clipping the bunny cages closed. She came back after her first visit to find that both had escaped ! But no injuries were incurred. Lito has gotten older, wiser, faster, and bigger it seems. So we're starting to let them both out.

Munchkin's still bullying Lito, but it's remained bluster and chasing, no biting and scratching. Lito's still dumb enough to walk right into Munchkin's cage, but even in there Munchkin just chases her out.

So they are hardly fast friends, but we're no longer worried about serious injury.

Small step but an encouraging one.

Lohan, just needs to spin it right.

For years as a teenager she knew she just wasn't quite was everybody was expecting of her. She was being pushed into a idea of the teen queen and it just didn't fit with the way she felt.

So once she discovered them she found that drugs and alcohol gave her a looseness that let her forget her discomfort and only coming out the other side did she finally recognize the source of her issues and accept the fact that she is, if not completely gay, then strongly attracted to women. Now that she isn't fighting this on a subconscious level she can proceed with a calmer life of happiness and fulfillment.

Certainly wouldn't be the first case of a teen unwilling/unable to accept their sexuality fleeing down a bad road in a misguided attempt to escape it. I have no idea if this is true, but if presented with care and a good PR agent it would almost completely redeem her reputation I bet.

We survived our school trip to Port Townsend, and it was actually really fun. Cold, but fun. The kids were for the most part great- very polite, kind to each other and appreciative of everything the Elders did for them. They learned tons about marine life in this part of the world, and all were sad when the trip came to an end. I'll post some pics later- it was really a beautiful place, and a relatively unspoiled one at that.:)

In case anyone still had a doubt, Clay Aiken is gay (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20228488,00.html).

Wow. My morning radio drive guys were talking about this today. Apparently there is quite the uproar about this. For years Clay fans have been staunchly defending him from "the haters" who called him gay. Now that he is out there is devastation (http://aikenforums.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=579107&view=findpost&p=17515860) in the ranks. A few are still in denial (http://aikenforums.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=578976&view=findpost&p=17505515). Rather sad really and on so many levels.

Hey! Remember the woman I danced with at the show and ended up going out with? Well, things are going great. We've been dating since then and enjoying each other's company. I've stretched my comfort zone and have learned a lot. This may turn into something. But...

Tired of the winters in Portland, she's taken a job in Puerto Vallarta. She's moving to Mexico tomorrow til May. And I was just starting to get good at this!

On the plus side, she says this gives me a place to go for a real vacation.

Damn! Now I have to get a passport!

will set aside May
22nd as a special day to celebrate the life of homosexual
politician Harvey

the same manner
as our Founding Fathers and Martin Luther King, although
the only thing he

that it will pass.

pressing 2 is a NO vote.
Pl ease vote now!
Please pass this on to as many people as possible!"

And he isn't known primarily for being a proud homosexual. He is primarily known (outside of San Francisco) for being killed for being a proud homosexual.

I went and read the bill (http://files.statesurge.com/file/194509). I don't object to anything in it.

There is a section of the state Education statute that requires the governor each year to designate certain days as special and particularly of educational significance. Schools are then encouraged to integrate into the curriculum topics relevant to that date.

While I don't care that Harvey Milk was gay or if students are taught that the gay rights movement in California was a good thing, adding Milk to the list of existing dates does stick out a bit. Currently there are only three such dates:

April 6: California Poppy Day
April 21: John Muir Day
Second Wednesday in May: Teachers Day.

This will add a fourth:

May 22: Harvey Milk Day

So I can see an argument that with such a small list that Milk may not be the first person who should be added, but that is independent of what he did in life.

Needless to say it's been a while, but I don't recall him being killed for being a proud homosexual but for siding with Moscone when he wouldn't let White rescind his resignation from the SF Board of Supervisors.

Alex

True, that was the specific cause. But I thought the larger reason they were at such loggerheads with each other was the gay rights issues (though I am certainly no expert on the history).

And regardless of whether it is technically accurate, I think it is fair to say that the legend (which is all that most people have in the way of knowledge) is that it was an ideologically driven assassination.

It's not a day off at all, ever.

It is just a declaration that it is a day of note. Schools are encouraged (though not required, I don't think) to use it as an educational opportunity.

Looking through the education code, the following holidays are recognized:

New Years Day (January 1) - Schools closed.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (mid-January) - Schools closed. Preceding school day to include exercises.
Lincoln Day (mid-February) - Schools closed. Preceding school day to include exercises.
Susan B. Anthony Day (February 15) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum.
Washington Day (late-February) - Schools closed. Preceding school day to include exercises.'
Black American Day (March 5) - (in honor of Crispus Attucks) Schools open but with appropriate curriculum.
Luther Burbank Day (March 11) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum.
Ceasr Chaves Day (March 31) - Schools may close if the individual district decides to.
California Poppy Day (April 6) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum. Annual governor declaration.
John Muir Day (April 21) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum. Annual governor declaration.
Teacher Day (mid-May) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum. Annual governor declaration.
Memorial Day (late May) - Schools closed.
4th of July (July 4) - Schools closed.
Labor Day (early September) - Schools closed.
Constitution Day (September 17) - Schools open but with appropriate curriculum.
Native American Day (late September) - Schools may close if the individual district decides to.
Veterans Day (November 11) - Schools closed.
Thanksgiving (late November) - Schools closed.
Christmas (December 25) - Schools closed.

Again, that is not what he is generally known for outside of the region. I'm not talking about the reality, I'm talking about the general familiarity, myth, and legend.

To the extent that most people in America (and even in California outside San Francisco) know who Harvey Milk is, it is simply that he was a gay politician who was assassinated. If it weren't for that last word, the majority of people who do know who he is, wouldn't have ever heard of the man.

I fully recognize this undersells the complexity and reality of the man, the times, and the events.

So. My Obama car magnet was stolen off my car Wednesday night. Saw it Wed coming home, didn't see it Thurs leaving for work. I'm pissed. I stopped at the Dem. HQ (walking distance from my home) to pick up a STICKER. Now you know I'm committed.

I get home and my neighbor happened to be outside at his car. I figured it could easily be them who took it, as they have seemed to skew Republican in my interactions with them...and they're also morons, and oftentimes, jerks. I couldn't help but test this.

I waved the new sticker at him and told him someone had stolen my Obama magnet. His instant response: "Well, can ya blame 'em? Aw, I'm just kidding." He then went on to say, "So, that one's a sticker?" and I swear, it sounded to me like he was figuring out whether he should try steal it as well. I said that I'd hate to think a neighbor would do this, and he didn't have much of a response for that. Could all be in my head, but seriously, these people are not bright, not good at hiding. (These same people put their place up for sale during the mortgage crisis and then said to me "it's crazy, for some reason, a lot of other condos are foreclosing right now - it's a big mystery! Just our luck, I guess."

Well, even if he didn't take it, he's a f'n asshole for making the crack about not blaming the theif.

So I went to the rodeo because Madz was riding barrels. And instead of cute cowboys I get a bunch of pre-teen girls gossiping like mad and some crazy lady from another country who literally scooched me over on the bench and then kept trying to chat with me. Where were the cowboys in wranglers? No I get the crazies.

Madz did great though. She and Nemo did a decent time and it was their first time out. I'm so proud of her.

Went to the LA County Fair yesterday to see my Mom's small hairy ass. She was showing to everyone. We didn't take any pictures this year, but here is a photo from a couple of years ago:

This is Tucker. He took third this year. Teddy, her other miniature, took first place AND best in category. And she almost didn't show Teddy because he was being, well, and ass before the show!

This is funny, since Republicans are supposed to be tougher on crime and criminals. Heh, you should advocate (to his face) the death penalty for the stupid thief that too your magnet!

Soooo...

After I got my MRI last week, I was told the Dr. would call me with the results (my initial diagnosis was a torn meniscus and maybe a small tear in my ACL). Instead, I got a phone call on Friday telling me the doctor wanted to see me on Monday to discuss the results.

My immediate thought was that he wasn't calling me in for good news.

I went in yesterday and as he was putting all of the images from the MRI up he told me, "well, you don't have a torn meniscus and your ACL looks good."...pause..."however, a blown ACL would be good news."

I have moderate to severe arthritis in my right kneecap. I got a huge shot of cortizone and will have surgery which (including PT) will take 4-6 months to recover from. Did I mention I'm not quite 41? :(

I've had a crappy couple of days.

After 4-6 months it'll be a lot better for the next several years. Then in about 15 years, I'll need knee replacement surgery.

My cheese is sad.

On the bright side, my doctor says they are making huge leaps in treating arthritic knees. There is a lab right now that is growing a cartilage "slurry" that shows promise in regrowing cartilage on a damaged joint. They've also been experimenting with using some of the wrinkle fillers like Restilin and Perlane to provide cushioning where the cartilage is missing. So maybe in 15 years something better will come along.

Ooh, sorry to hear that. Knees are tricky; easy to injure and difficult or impossible to heal on their own. Both of mine are still messed up from injuries sustained in my reckless youth, though not bad enough to need surgery. I hope everything goes well with yours.

I was feeling sick before. I just thought it was from my undying hatred for my job. Now I think I might actually have caught something from the boyfriend, who ostensibly has a "sinus infection".

Besides the daiquiri calmed the impulse to stab the back of my hand with a fork rather than return to work. I went back to work and my hand remains delightfully fork-free. Of course, I ended up going home about 2 hours early owing to my feeling sick.

Also, it has an international keyboard, so the € symbol is right there on the 5 key. This model runs on Linux, so I remain Windows-free. Whee! I just had to share.
